Instead of feeling grounded and connected, she found herself in her head, distracted by stage noises, lighting, and internal pressure to remember every word.

This experience sparked a deeper reflection on the difference between memorizing a talk and truly learning it. Lauren explores what happens when speakers rely on scripts instead of embodiment and how this can lead to moments of disconnection, anxiety, and even blanking on stage. She opens up about a real moment where she lost her place during a keynote and the surprising way she recovered, reinforcing that imperfect speaking experiences often become our greatest teachers.

Lauren introduces her current approach to talk preparation, a technique she calls the set list method. Rather than memorizing paragraphs of text, she practices using prompts and guiding questions that represent each moment of the story. This allows her to stay flexible, present, and responsive to audience energy while still delivering powerful content. The result is storytelling that feels authentic, dynamic, and alive rather than rehearsed and rigid.

Throughout the episode, Lauren discusses how speaking presence is deeply connected to being in the body rather than trapped in the mind. She shares how meditation, repetition, and speaking material out loud can help speakers develop muscle memory, strengthen confidence, and improve stage performance. Listeners will also hear examples of how stories evolve through practice and why the first written draft of a talk is rarely the final version delivered on stage.

This conversation is especially valuable for women speakers, coaches, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders who want to grow their visibility, deliver transformational keynotes, and connect emotionally with audiences. Whether you are preparing your first talk or refining an established keynote, this episode offers practical guidance for building talks that feel natural, memorable, and impactful.

Lauren also invites listeners to reflect on their own speaking experiences, including moments of forgetting lines, bombing, or feeling disconnected on stage. Instead of viewing these moments as failures, she reframes them as opportunities for growth, refinement, and deeper self trust.

By the end of the episode, listeners will walk away with a simple but powerful shift. Stop memorizing your talk and start learning it through repetition, embodiment, and structure that supports flow rather than rigidity.

If you are working on a keynote, workshop, or signature talk and want a preparation method that helps you stay present, connect with your audience, and deliver value without sounding scripted, this episode will resonate deeply.

Lauren's "Set List" of most recent story:

Opening

Where are you?

What do you feel?

What do you hear?

What do you smell?

What do you see?

What are you thinking?

Why are you here?

Who speaks first?

Sum it up in 3 words.

Trip home.

#1 rule

Following year?

What did Rob say?

How did it feel in your body?

Vision?

What did you ask yourself?

What did other people think?

To be played at opening of all SGTM episodes, this is a promo for the Speakers Collective.

Support the show

We dive into the counterintuitive habit that top performers use to protect creativity and stop burnout: stepping away on purpose. Through Lauren’s candid nursing school story—where a friend hit the beach and still scored higher—we unpack why rest can outperform relentless study and how that lesson maps to business, writing, and building anything meaningful.

We break down the four phases of flow—struggle, release, flow, and recovery—and show how each one feels in real life. You’ll learn to spot the moment when effort becomes noise, why a short release (walks, movement, task switching) opens the door to flow, and how recovery cements learning and keeps your best ideas coming. This isn’t theory for theory’s sake; it’s a practical system grounded in positive psychology, cognitive science, and everyday experience so entrepreneurs and creators can do better work in less time.

Expect simple, actionable tactics: a struggle stop-rule to prevent spiral, micro-recovery blocks that fit into busy days, and macro-recovery that protects your energy during big pushes. We also talk about using holidays like Thanksgiving as intentional recharge time with family, food, and gratitude—no guilt required. Come away with a kinder, smarter workflow that replaces white-knuckle hustle with sustainable, repeatable peak performance.

If this resonated, tap follow, leave a quick five-star review, and share it with someone who needs permission to pause. We’ve been that host too—and it taught us a powerful reframe: choose your feeling before you choose your to-do list. In this conversation, we break down a simple, practical method to set the tone you want—calm, warm, playful—and actually enjoy the moment you worked so hard to create.

We start by asking one question that changes everything: how do I want to feel? From there, we expand it to how do I want them to feel, because your energy leads the room. Then we get tactical with a three-step plan you can use for events and everyday life: plan for tomorrow’s you so the heavy lifting is done early, delegate generously to the capable people around you, and trust yourself enough to let go when it’s showtime. Along the way, we share real examples—from hosting to bedtime routines—that reveal how presence beats perfection and why guests remember your vibe more than your menu.

To close, we offer a bonus conflict hack that works in the heat of the moment: how do I want this to end? Whether you’re negotiating with a partner or tucking in wired kids, that question points you toward peace and better outcomes without another 20-minute rerun of the same old fight. Expect practical scripts, mindset shifts, and a reminder that joy is the point—not flawless choreography. If you’re ready to lead your home, relationships, and gatherings with intention, you’ll leave with a clear path to feel-first living and results that actually stick.

If this resonates, follow the show, leave a quick review, and share it with someone who needs a calmer way to lead their day. That's exactly where I found myself while contemplating a career change from emergency nursing to school nursing.

The decision seemed obvious—trading 12-hour high-stress hospital shifts for a schedule aligned with my children's school day. Yet I agonized over what this meant for my identity. "Am I still a legitimate nurse if I'm not working in a hospital?" This question haunted me until two wise women in my life asked why I was fighting the ease being offered to me.

Their question stopped me in my tracks, especially since one of my own guiding questions for finding purpose has always been: "How can this be easy?" The irony wasn't lost on me—I'd been resisting my own advice. We've created a culture that glorifies being busy and burnt out, wearing exhaustion like a badge of honor. But science confirms what our bodies already know: prolonged stress impairs decision-making and emotional regulation. Studies show that when we're exhausted, we're less likely to use our recovery time well, creating a downward spiral.

This fall, I'm choosing ease. Not because I'm giving up or because I don't love emergency nursing, but because I'm honoring what serves me and my family in this season. The compassion that makes me a good nurse doesn't disappear when I change settings—it's who I am, not what I do.

Where in your life are you fighting the ease? Dave Fatula found out when he left his 20-year career as a commercial real estate investment partner to create Guinea Fowl Adventure Company, a full-service hiking business based in Boston.

During the pandemic, Dave found himself spending more time hiking and trail running to maintain his sanity. The transformative moment came during a solo hike in pouring rain, when he realized how deeply happy he was despite the conditions. "I was on a ridge, alone and so happy," Dave shares. "I thought this mental health builder, as well as physical health that you gain by hiking – this is necessary and people need to connect with this."

Dave spotted a crucial gap in the outdoor recreation market. While mountaineering guides existed in places like the White Mountains and Adirondacks, no one was providing transportation, gear, and guidance all in one package for city dwellers. His company now removes all barriers to outdoor adventures, making nature accessible to everyone regardless of experience level.

The name "Guinea Fowl" comes from birds Dave observed at a dairy farm that stayed together in groups for safety, knew no boundaries, and called out to help strays find their way back – the perfect metaphor for his adventure company. A flock of guinea fowl is called a "confusion," which became his company's playful tagline: "Join the confusion."

During our conversation on the trails of Middlesex Fells, Dave speaks candidly about the challenges of career transition, particularly adjusting to not being his family's primary income provider. "A lot of your worth is tied up with your ability to produce," he reflects. "You provide for your family in lots of ways, not just economic."

Dave also offers pointed criticism of modern work culture: "Zoom became a digital leash. People who spent their entire professional lives were losing autonomy." He believes society needs a fundamental shift toward honoring personal time and finding meaning beyond professional identities.

When asked about living your "biggest, best life," Dave's answer crystallizes his philosophy: "It's owning your time and doing what you love. Spend your time with people you care for and who care for you, doing the things you enjoy."

Ready to reclaim your time and connect with nature?
