The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection is declaring a statewide Code Red Air Quality Alert due to Canadian wildfire smoke.  DEP warns fine particulate matter in the air today could reach a level that is dangerous for everyone.  Residents are strongly encouraged to limit outdoor activities, especially sensitive groups such as children and the elderly.  

          A man charged with killing a 15-year-old is pleading guilty.  Lycoming County officials say Ja'hsir Legare pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter this week in the death of Ahmeen Palmer.  Palmer was shot and killed outside of a Loyalsock Township TGI Friday's in 2024.  Legare faces up to 15 years in prison. 

           Two people are dead after authorities say they were hit by a vehicle while riding a motorcycle.  The crash was reported on Brush Valley Road near Sunbury Tuesday night.  The victims are identified as Brian and Megin Wallace.  The investigation is ongoing.

            President Trump announced a large investment in national security during a visit to the Midstate on Wednesday.  Trump spoke at a roundtable with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Republican Pennsylvania Senator Dave McCormick during the Pennsylvania Defense & Innovation Summit at U.S. Army War College.  The president touted a ten-billion dollar investment in Pennsylvania's defense industrial base.  Trump said the Commonwealth will play a key role in "building the arsenal of freedom." 

               The Kentucky Attorney General's Office is planning to pursue the death penalty against the suspect in the deadly Berea bank robbery.  AG Russell Coleman announced the state indictment on murder and fleeing or evading counts against 19-year-old Brailen Weaver yesterday.  Weaver is accused of entering a U.S. Bank branch on Chestnut Street back in April and immediately shooting two employees before taking off with cash.  He has been criminally indicted in federal court as well.

               The Kentucky Attorney General's Office is claiming the Fayette County Public Schools Board of Education violated open meetings laws last month.  In a ruling released yesterday, the AG's Office says the board did not give a sufficient public explanation before entering the closed session during which Superintendent Demetrus Liggins was placed on administrative leave.  The attorney general does say, however, the discussion held in private is allowed under state law and the actions of the board will be permitted to stand.  Attorneys for Liggins requested the review, saying the board should be ordered to reverse the decision to place the superintendent on leave.

           Officials are looking into an apparent drowning on Lake Cumberland yesterday.  The Russell County Coroner's Office says a man's body was recovered in the Caney Fork Creek area around 5:30 p.m.  The deceased person has been identified as 28-year-old Joshua Wethington, of Casey County.  His remains are being taken to the state medical examiner's office for an autopsy.

            Officials are warning residents after a skunk found in Scott County tested positive for rabies.  The WEDCO District Health Department reports the animal was found in the community of Stamping Ground on July 7th.  Those who live in the area are advised to make sure pets are up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations and to avoid any animals that are acting abnormally.  Potential exposure to the illness should be reported to WEDCO's environmental division.

            Lieutenant Governor Jacqueline Coleman is formally endorsing Charles Booker for U.S. Senate.  Booker announced he had Coleman's support on social media yesterday, thanking her for her leadership and focus on the people of Kentucky.  Booker is the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate seat that will be vacated by Mitch McConnell with his retirement at the end of the year.  Republican Congressman Andy Barr is running against Booker in the general election.

A twenty-eight-year-old New Castle man has died following a weekend crash in Mahoning Township. State police say Noah Mills lost control of his sedan on a curve along Mohawk School Road, traveling down a driveway before striking a parked commercial truck. He died at the scene.

A federal grand jury has indicted fifty-two-year-old Keith Jackson of New Castle on drug charges. Federal prosecutors say Jackson was caught in a local hotel room with fentanyl and faces a count of possession with intent to distribute.

And a commercial lender is suing Schwebel Baking Company for nearly three-point-eight million dollars, claiming the company defaulted on its loan. The lawsuit comes as the baking company winds down operations, which will eliminate more than three-hundred-seventy local jobs by the end of the summer.

And in Olean, a political firestorm is hitting the race for New York's twenty-third congressional district. Incumbent Republican Nick Langworthy is calling out Democratic challenger Aaron Gies following a media report connecting Gies' brother-in-law—a convicted sex offender—to a winter campaign event. Gies pushed back, stating the individual is not a volunteer or staff member.

West Virginia has been identified by federal health officials as one of the primary states linked to a growing, multi-state outbreak of a severe foodborne illness. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that the Mountain State has seen up to eighty cases of cyclosporiasis since the middle of June. Health officials warn the stomach parasite is typically spread through contaminated water or fresh produce, including lettuce. The Food and Drug Administration is actively investigating local produce items and the locations visited by infected individuals. State health departments are urging residents to practice rigorous handwashing and to thoroughly wash all fruits and vegetables before eating them.

In environmental news, the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection has stepped in to order immediate repairs at a major construction site in Mason County. State regulators have ordered the company building the Monarch Data Center to repair its stormwater controls after nearby residents were hit by severe runoff and flooding. According to state officials, this is the second time since construction began this year that runoff from the development has flooded neighboring properties. Under the state’s emergency order, the Monarch Cloud Campus must immediately reinforce its failed stormwater systems and take direct action to prevent future runoff.

Meanwhile, a major injection of federal funding is on the way to help address critical healthcare staffing shortages in rural West Virginia. Governor Patrick Morrisey’s office announced that the federal government has allocated one-point-eight million dollars to the state’s Rural Health Transformation office. And a tragic workplace accident in Marshall County has left a telecommunications worker with severe injuries. Authorities report that a thirty-two-year-old worker was in a bucket truck installing fiber internet lines when he accidentally made contact with an energized utility line. The worker was rushed to a local hospital with serious injuries.

State health commissioners are urging all residents to limit heavy outdoor exertion, keep windows closed, and utilize air conditioning to reduce exposure. 

Health officials are warning New Yorkers to wash their fresh produce thoroughly as a major foodborne illness outbreak sweeps the state. Investigators believe contaminated lettuce or salad greens are behind more than five-hundred-and-fifteen cases of cyclosporiasis in New York. The stomach parasite causes severe gastrointestinal issues, and case numbers this summer are significantly higher than average.

Meanwhile, a hazardous mix of extreme heat and Canadian wildfire smoke is triggering warnings across the state. Governor Kathy Hochul says the smoke is creating hazy skies and unhealthy breathing conditions.          Many new state laws are taking effect in Kentucky today.  More than half of the 190 bills passed by the Kentucky General Assembly this year are becoming effective.  This includes the state's new law against sexual grooming and a measure that expands prohibited content to include AI-generated images of minors.  A bill requiring the public to maintain a 25-foot zone around first responders performing their duties takes effect today as well.

           A couple of law firms are now representing the family of a man who was killed in a July 4th boat crash on Herrington Lake in Mercer County.  Attorneys with Peterson Law and Whiteford, Taylor & Preston have confirmed the loved ones of Nazar Svintozelskiy are clients.  The 25-year-old man died after a wake boat struck his family's pontoon while it was sitting stationary in the water.  THE VICTIM'S father remains in a medically-induced coma.  Officials with Kentucky Fish and Wildlife have identified the wake boat driver, but no charges have been filed so far.

          Local leaders in Newport are ending their Flock camera pilot program.  City officials say they are not moving ahead with a purchase of the license plate readers and the existing equipment will be removed within the next couple of weeks.  Assistant City Manager Brian Steffen says local leaders do not believe the technology would be misused in Newport, but some new Fourth Amendment court rulings raise questions about the future of automated license plate readers.  This includes the recent Chatrie v. United States Supreme Court decision, which found that law enforcement must obtain a search warrant before accessing detailed location information for a U.S. citizen.

           The Grayson County Sheriff's Office is asking for help from the public as deputies search for an attempted murder suspect.  Authorities are looking to apprehend 35-year-old Joshua L. Shultz.  He is described as a white man standing five feet, nine inches tall, weighing about 195 pounds, with long hair, a beard and blue eyes.  Shultz was last seen driving a silver Hyundai Elantra with Kentucky plates, according to officials.  Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to contact the Grayson County Sheriff's Office.

           One person is dead after a motorcycle crash last night.  State Police say it happened on Route 222 in Lower Macungie Township at around 8 p.m.  The victim has not been identified.  POLICE are investigating. 

        A mistrial is being declared in a 2021 Williamsport shooting case.  A jury was unable to come to an agreement Tuesday night on most charges against 24-year-old Douglas Robinson, who was accused of unintentionally hitting a mother of two in her bedroom during a drive-by shooting.  Robinson was found guilty of illegally possessing a gun, but the jury could not reach a consensus on more serious charges, including aggravated assault.  Robinson's bail was revoked and he was returned to custody following his lone conviction.

        Authorities are investigating a deadly house fire in Allentown.  Fire officials say a 68-year-old woman was found dead inside a home on the 400 block of Jerome Street that went up in flames Tuesday morning.  The fire department said three firefighters needed to be taken to a hospital for treatment of heat-related illnesses.  They have since been released and are expected to return to duty in the coming days.

          A man is being charged with three counts of criminal homicide in Susquehanna County for allegedly killing his uncle and two friends.  State Police say the three were shot and killed by 29-year-old Garrett Johnson at a home in Great Bend Township Monday evening.  A motive has yet to be revealed.  Johnson is being held without bail with a preliminary hearing scheduled next week.

         STATE health officials say the state has, so far, mostly avoided a foodborne parasite outbreak that has made thousands of people sick across the U.S.  The Pennsylvania Department of Health says it has recorded 28 cases of cyclosporiasis in the Commonwealth.  The parasite is linked to contaminated fresh produce like salad greens, cilantro, basil, raspberries and snow peas.  It can cause severe diarrhea, nausea and stomach cramps that last for weeks.

We begin with a major multi-million-dollar federal settlement impacting healthcare facilities across the state. The West Virginia United Health System, doing business as WVU Medicine, has agreed to pay over four-point-one-seven million dollars to resolve civil allegations of Controlled Substances Act violations. A DEA investigation uncovered recordkeeping and reporting failures between 2017 and 2024, including a systemic failure to report thefts and significant losses of highly addictive medications.

Meanwhile, a federal judge in Charleston has delivered a major victory to West Virginia election officials. District Judge Thomas Johnston dismissed a Department of Justice lawsuit that sought to force Secretary of State Kris Warner to hand over unredacted voter registration lists. The court ruled the federal government failed to show any valid legal reason to demand sensitive personal data, like partial social security numbers.

In Huntington, local leaders are moving forward with a controversial two-million-dollar surveillance system. Despite overwhelming opposition from more than fifty residents at a marathon city council meeting, officials approved a five-year contract with Flock Safety. The network will install more than forty license plate readers, seventeen security cameras, and deploy two surveillance drones.

Federal investigators are searching for answers following a tragic helicopter crash in Pocahontas County. State Police say a privately owned Sikorsky helicopter went down near Huntersville, claiming the life of fifty-seven-year-old pilot Leo Basile of Arthurdale. The N-T-S-B is leading the investigation into what caused the crash.

And state health officials are warning residents to take precautions after a sudden, unusual spike in a rare intestinal virus. The Kanawha-Charleston Health Department has confirmed thirteen local cases of the severe stomach illness so far this year, a massive jump compared to their typical average of just one case annually.

          A Bath County couple is accused of keeping two children and dozens of animals in poor living conditions.  Kentucky State Police report Shane and Angel Dufresne have been arrested on first-degree criminal abuse charges.  Authorities say the suspects were found under the influence of methamphetamine at their home on June 18th, with two and four-year-old kids present.  Ashley Bennett with Strays and Runaways Rescue says nine dogs, five cats and some chickens were also found at the property.  She is looking to find care for the animals, as Bath County has no animal shelter.

          A man and a girl are o.k. after getting lost in an abandoned mine in Martin County.  Rescue crews responded to a shuttered coal mine near the Lovely community on Sunday after family members said they had not heard from the pair since the night before.  Officials say the man and the child became disoriented after entering the mine with their dog and were unable to find the entrance, but the girl was eventually able to get through a narrow passage and call her mom on a cell phone.  Rescuers then widened that opening to allow the man and the dog to escape as well.

         ON THE RADIO NOVO NEWS HEALTHWATCH.......... The Kentucky Department for Public Health is now investigating 100 reports of cyclosporiasis.  Officials have confirmed 61 cases so far.  Cyclosporiasis is a digestive illness caused by food or water contaminated by the microscopic cyclospora parasite. Health leaders believe the current outbreak in the U.S. has been caused by contaminated produce, but the source has not yet been determined.  Officials are urging people to thoroughly wash all fruits and vegetables before eating them and to wash hands after handling produce.

        The Kentucky State Police are among the top finishers in this year's Best Looking Cruiser contest.  The agency landed at number five in the competition with over 16-thousand votes.  This means a photo of a KSP cruiser will be featured in the American Association of State Troopers wall calendar for 2027.  The Florida State Patrol came in first place with over 52-thousand votes.

             A heat advisory goes into effect for the Harrisburg area today.  The National Weather Service says heat index values could get up to 102 degrees in parts of central Pennsylvania, including Dauphin and Lebanon Counties.  The advisory begins at 11 a.m. and runs through tomorrow night.

Louisville Metro Police are searching for the driver in a fatal hit-and-run that killed an e-bike rider on Outer Loop this past weekend.  Investigators say it happened just before midnight Sunday night between Stinnett Lane and Grade Lane.  They say the victim who was riding an e-bike was struck by a vehicle whose driver continued on and did not stop.  A second vehicle struck the e-bike but its driver stopped to help the e-bike rider.  The identity of the e-bike rider has not been released.    

 Construction is moving forward on the Scott County Justice Center.  When finished, the 69-thousand-square-foot justice center in Georgetown will include six courtrooms and bring all six county judges under one roof instead of the three buildings they currently hold court out of.  Legal officials say the justice center will lead to faster court services for many county residents.  Construction on the 55-million dollar project is set to wrap up at the end of the year.

The Kentucky State Fair is hiring workers for temporary positions during the fair.  The fair runs August 20th to the 30th at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville.  Pay starts at more than 13-dollars per-hour for positions including gate attendants, event set-up, maintenance, and guest services.  Applicants can apply online or attend walk-in interviews on July 7th and July 11th at the Kentucky Exposition Center.  No experience is required, but applicants must be at least 18 years old and able to work around crowds.  

A DuBois man is heading to state prison for drug trafficking. Thirty-five-year-old Dalton Gene Dickey was sentenced to serve ten months to five years after pleading guilty to felony counts of possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine. The charges stem from a state police sting where Dickey sold the drug to undercover officers.

Meanwhile, an investigation is underway after a seventy-one-year-old male inmate died at the Clearfield County Jail. Officials say the man suffered an apparent cardiac event early Monday morning. An off-duty police officer is dead after being shot by Boone County deputies.  Authorities say Boone County Sheriff deputies responded Friday night to a domestic violence complaint involving shots fired.  Officers encountered off-duty Florence Police officer Dustin Zink, who was displaying a weapon while threatening both self-harm and harm to others at the scene.  Zink fired his weapon multiple times.  Four deputies opened fire, hitting Zink, who was pronounced dead at the hospital.  

Former Kentucky guard Kerr Kriisa is in legal trouble.  Kriisa was arrested on federal charges last Friday.  The case reportedly involves a multimillion-dollar fraud scheme.  The Estonia native played for the Wildcats during the 2024-25 season.  He averaged 4.4 points and 3.8 assists while appearing in nine games. 

 A recall is being issued for bags of frozen blueberries sold at Publix because of possible E. coli contamination.  The 10-ounce bags of  GreenWise Organic IQF Blueberries were sold at the grocery store chain across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and Kentucky.  So far there have been 12 confirmed cases of E. coli.

             A LOCAL CAT RESCUE CHARITY SAYS IT HAS BEEN ORDERED OFF SALEM TOWNSHIP LAND BOUGHT BY A DATA CENTER COMPANY.  THE GROUP, FRIENDS AND FERALS, HAD SUCCESSFULLY RESCUED DOZENS OF ABANDONED CATS FROM QTS PROPERTIES OVER THE LAST MONTH.  HOWEVER, QTS OFFICIALS SAY THEY ORDERED THE GROUP TO STOP BECAUSE VOLUNTEERS WERE BECOMING OVERWHELMED BY THE NUMBERS OF FERAL CATS, PROMPTING QTS TO CALL IN A PROFESSIONAL WILDLIFE RESCUE TO TAKE OVER THE HUMANE CAPTURE OF THE FELINES.
