People of my generation are increasingly horrified at how quickly a stable, postwar, rules-based order has been changed into something that looks rather like anarchy.

Here in Australia, political choices are worryingly limited and uninspiring;  America at this time appears hardly to be working on any level at all, and certainly not politically;  Russia has become a dangerous dictatorship, where journalists are routinely done away with for questioning official policy.  Elsewhere, AI and social media permit politicians, if they wish, to essentially make up their own truth on the run.  Many do and objective, independent reporting of correctly sourced & verified facts is becoming a thing of the past. 

But hold on a minute.  Let's not forget that since the late 1950s, musicians and composers have been writing songs warning about this deteriorating situation.  Now, Wavelength's Politico Pourri brings them all together.

October 8 marks the anniversary of the death of the great English contralto singer, Kathleen Ferrier, in 1953.

She achieved an international reputation as a stage, concert and recording artist, with a repertoire extending from folksong and popular ballads to the classical works of Bach, Brahms, Mahler and Elgar.  Her death from cancer, at the height of her fame, was a profound shock to the musical world and particularly to the general public, which was kept in ignorance of the nature of her illness until after her death.

This tribute program includes reflections from Rob Paul, some of Ferrier's best known recordings, and Matthew Parris's program on Ferrier for the BBC series Great Lives.

Textures to beguile you, make you laugh and always to charm you.  Sometimes, they will confront you.

Intentionally impressionistic in style, this program seeks to feel these qualities rather than narrate them.  It naturally contains a lot of folk music but it’s not all traditional - we’ll hear classical, progressive and jazz performances, and plenty of rock and instrumental music too.

It's a mark of the greatness of Irish music that despite 700 years of authoritarian and often brutal British repression, a great Irish singer can still sing an English song as willingly and evocatively as Luke Kelly sings The Unquiet Grave.

This program showcases the English-speaking folk music I've experienced  in my lifetime.  When I was a young man in England, the '60s UK folk resurgence was in full swing.   My friends and I greatly enjoyed the 400 year old 'Blue Boar' pub, just outside Newbury on the Berkshire Downs.  Oliver Cromwell stayed there the night before the first Battle of Newbury in the English Civil War, on September 19th/20th, 1643.  There's a Civil War song from Martyn Wyndham-Read in the second hour of this program.

On Friday and Saturday nights, we'd gather there and sing along with local folk singers Brian Howe and Mike Campbell-Cole;  and on Sunday evenings, we'd head to the Waggon & Horses, in Newbury, for the weekly Folk Club session.  My lifelong love of folk music was born in these experiences, and it's a pleasure to share with you here the songs I've been fortunate to acquire over many years.

Cox built the road with a team of 30 hand-picked convicts, whom he treated well.  Cox shared their difficult conditions and most of the convicts received their freedom, in one form or another, following the road's completion.
