After all, we’ve been told “love is a verb.” It’s shown in words and deeds. But if that were enough, our relationships wouldn’t so often end up exhausted, fractured, or empty. What if we’ve been doing this love thing wrong all along?

But what if the way we cling to our freedom is actually what’s holding us captive? What if our insistence on doing what we want, when we want, has quietly become a kind of bondage—pulling us away from what God wants to do in us and through us? And while our kid’s temptation might be a palm branch in the pew, it’s a reminder that temptations of all kinds surround us.

This Sunday, we’re looking at how to handle life’s temptations. We’re all tempted—to compromise, to doubt, to rely on ourselves. But if we have eyes to see it, Palm Sunday shows us a way forward. Anybody else remember blowing right past those No Trespassing signs as a kid. They were usually nailed to a tree at the edge of the woods. And honestly, nobody cared. It was just a shortcut to make to school before the first-period bell. Hop on some old path, cut across someone’s property, and pop out on the other side a few minutes faster. The sign felt more like a suggestion than a rule.

But trespassing feels very different when someone crosses into something that belongs to me — my time, my trust, my reputation, my relationships. When that happens, it’s suddenly not a harmless shortcut anymore. Something in me knows it’s wrong and wants the score settled. This Sunday at BCC, we’re wrestling with what it means to forgive when someone trespasses against us, and why letting go of what we feel owed might be one of the hardest — and most freeing — things we ever do.

Over the last two weeks, I’ve genuinely missed you all. A Sunday “off” for the pastoral staff isn’t quite as restful as it might sound—especially when our heart is still very much with the people you long to gather with. Add in snowstorms, shoveling-induced back pain, and nights spent half-awake checking weather forecasts, and let’s just say my sleep tracker has been unimpressed.

These past weeks have carried a particular tension: holding safety as a real priority while also deeply wanting—really wanting—to be together as the church. Watching the forecast, weighing decisions, praying for wisdom… all of it has made me even more aware of how much gathering together matters.

And here we are again, with more snow in the forecast this weekend. I’m praying that the weather will not once more complicate what we’re longing for—that we’ll be able to gather, worship, laugh, and simply be the community God has formed us to be.

Because when we are together, something settles in our souls. Scripture names it in Psalm 133, “Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!”

Or maybe it was an encounter with one of those church people who made you feel like you’re the outsider in a game where the rules are already set. I’ve felt like that and it made me wonder — Is this really what faith is supposed to be like?

Maybe you grew up playing by the rules, and they feel like home. In fact, many of us have come to cherish—dare I say, venerate—the rules. They offer structure, certainty, and control. They tell us who’s in and who’s out. They measure our progress to help us feel like we’re doing it "right." For some, this sense of order becomes comforting, even necessary, and we start to believe that faith is about checking off the right boxes and keeping everything neat and tidy.

But what if God never meant for Christianity to be about following a bunch of rules? What if God wants to be so more to you than a divine disciplinarian? In a world that often celebrates the freedom of casual connections and keeping options open, we sometimes overlook the cost of avoiding commitment. After all, when we’re “playing the field” it’s easy to keep things light and carefree. Real commitment requires vulnerability and responsibility, but without it, we miss out on the deeper, richer experiences that genuine connection offers. Relationships demand investment, trust, and the courage to fully engage. By choosing not to commit, we risk never experiencing the profound depth of connection we were designed for.

Many of us approach our relationship with God in much the same way—keeping Him at a distance, not fully committing to a walk of faith, or only giving part of ourselves. This hesitation to engage with God wholeheartedly not only stunts our spiritual growth, but it can also sabotage the very influence He wants to have in our lives. By failing to commit, we miss the transformative power of His presence.

Now that we’ve come through Easter, it’s time we sit down for a D.T.R. with God, learning to stop” playing the field” and fully commit to the relationship that matters most.

While we don’t often use the word, covet, its reality is everywhere. We want, crave, long for what others have—whether it's relationships, possessions, or status. Culture fuels this with messages like "You deserve more!" and "Once you pop, you can't stop." But Christ calls us to contentment.

It shows up on the news, another shooting, another tragedy. It often shocks us to our core, leaving many to ask, How could this happen? We grieve for the victims and search for reasons to explain what went wrong. But what if, in many ways, our culture’s relationship with violence has inadvertently laid the groundwork for these events to occur? The glorification of violence in entertainment to a desensitization toward suffering in the world. We’re horrified by the news but over exposed to aggressive action, violent content, and a disregard for human life on a regular basis. But the soul-refreshing, soul-satisfying, hope-reviving rest is not found in this world, it’s found in the Lord of the Sabbath – Jesus Christ. Come, all who are weary, stressed, anxious and restless.
