This week We speak to Molly, one of our cafe team and find out about the neuroscience degree she's completed! There's also a bit of music from Mike's solo album which he played while waiting for Simon to get to the studio. Also, a little news about plans for the Wells Carnival podcast which we hope will be our first video podcast!

This week, Mike talks to 2 students from Alderman Peel High School in Wells who have been pursuing their work experience week at ells Maltings. Also there is an interview with the amazing Cal Halbert who has the distinction of being the fastest selling ticket the Maltings has ever known. Cal's forthcoming November show went on sale a few weeks ago and sold out within the first week! We like our customers to book as early as possible so if necessary we can negotiate a second show which we have managed to do in this case.

The last couple of podcasts have been delayed because of a hard drive crash which caused Mike a lot of extra work! We hope to get back on track this week but please bear with us!

In this episode we meet Andrew Lindfield of Dot Productions who are returning to Wells Maltings on 11th July with their production of Lady Windermere's Fan. Apologies to all of you who were expecting a podcast last week, but my main Hard Drive decided to make itself unreadable, causing me quite a few problems. This was just before the podcast was due to be uploaded. Fortunately I had some of the original recordings in a different place and I was able to reconstruct most of the podcast. I hope to get the next one (which was originally scheduled for release today) out early next week, and then get back on track with weekly podcasts.

In this edition Simon talks to film director Barney Broom who has already delighted  Maltings audience with his illustrated talks on the history of Hollywood.  I have found them incredibly interesting and am definitely looking forward to the next one on Tuesday 16th June when he talks about the decline and fall and then the reinvention of Hollywood in the 1980's. Also some advance news of things to come in the shape of Cal Halbert... Listen and find out!

Wells Maltings has a new Chef! Meet Rhiannon and find out about her background and vision for the Maltings food offering going forward. Rhiannon is a graduate of City College Norwich, something she shares with our Director (and of course, Maltings Matters presenter) Simon Daykin. Simon also shares his memories of local legend, Carla Phillips, who sadly passed away about 2 weeks ago. As usual there is news of some events coming up including the Friday 5th June appearance of amazing folk rock band, Tin Giants.  We featured Tin Giants in a Maltings Matters Podcast Special last year and you might like to have a listen to that if you haven't heard it already - or even if you have it's worth another listen! As always we welcome your input about what you'd like to hear on Maltings Matters. Please email hello@wellsmaltings.org.uk with Maltings Matters Podcast in the subject.

Yes, we know it's been a while since the last one! We are a small team and sometimes there is a lot of work we need to do behind the scenes to bring you the events you enjoy. Still we have a long episode for you today so we hope you enjoy listening to Simon and Mike chatting about life at the Maltings and what's coming up in the near future. This week we have an interview with musical duo Annie Duggan and Rob Hines who are coming to perform for you on Thursday 28th May in the Handa Theatre.  They have been here many times before and if you have heard them before, I'm sure you will be coming along to hear them again tomorrow! If you haven't heard them yet, listen to the podcast and we'll see you on Thursday!. Mike also talks a little about the piece of video art that he and Fiona Bennett are working on for the forthcoming NNEP Exhibition Undercurrent at Wighton Church from 2nd July to 2nd August. #nnep #contemporaryart #wighton26 #northnorfolkexhibitionproject

We're Back! Yes we know it's been a while, but we have had so much to do with the day to day activities of running the Maltings that we've not had a minute to think about the podcast. This edition features two interviews as well as the usual rundown of events coming up at Wells Maltings. This week we were joined by members of The Lounge -  Wells Maltings' Youth Club - to talk about the Lounge Open Evening  that is happening tonight (26th March). Also, somewhat unexpectedly, highly entertaining piano duo The Missing Coda dropped into the studio while we were recording . Benjamin Howell and Matthew Preston are two local music teachers who inspire their students not only through their teaching but also their performances as The Missing Coda.

A bit of a different podcast today. Simon, Issac and Mike reflect on some - and we do mean just some - of the events of the last year. There were many superb theatre, music and other events that we didn’t have time to mention. Let us know your favourites! Please write in to hello@wellsmaltings.org.uk with Podcast in the subject. Also write to us if you have any ideas for things you'd like to see at the Maltings in 2026. We would like to wish you all a Happy and Prosperous New Year. We'll be closed for a few days while we do some deep cleaning and other important maintenance that we just can't do when we're open for business.

This will be the last Maltings Matters of 2025. Our next one will be New Year 2026, so look out for that 0n 1st January 2026 or just after. But what delights are waiting for you in this special Christmas Edition of Maltings Matters? Well... a couple of weeks ago we were privileged to host Shenley Productions version of Dickens' A Christmas Carol, featuring 4 superb actors who you will have heard and seen in Films and TV (and possibly audio books and video games in one case). Sabina Franklyn, Jenny Funnell, Karl Howman and David Streames were with us for 4 wonderful performances. We were able to interview 3 of them for this podcast, though David Streames was filming when we recorded the interview and wasn't able to join us. If you saw the production you'll know how good it was, but in case you were unfortunate enough to miss it, Mike recorded one of the performances and we include a couple of extracts from the recording just to let you hear what you've missed! Also we had a visit from Wells Churches Together Choir who led us in some. traditional Carol Singing on Saturday and you'll hear a little from them. So we hope you enjoy this episode and all of us at Wells Maltings wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and look forward to seeing you soon.

A short Episode this week as Mike was busy with an assignment (or so he says) and left Simon to cope on his own with a little help from Ella (The voice who introduces  the podcast and reads the credits at the end. But though it may be short it is a bit of a scoop because we have an interview with Santa himself, direct from Lapland via Zoom. He talks with Simon about how much he is looking forward to Wells ChristmasTide. Not to be missed!

We hope your halloween wasn't too scary and as we enter the month of November and there's a definite chill in the air make, sure you keep wrapped up warm and avoid the winter illnesses that abound this time of year. One of last week's highlights was Revenge: After the Levoyah - a superb show, extremely funny and brilliantly acted, (those of you lucky enough to be in the audience will know that!) This week we switched the spotlight away from the performers and talked to someone who literally keeps the show on the road. Amy Daniels is the Touring Production Manager of this show and gives us an insight into her job. Of course, we also have a rundown of what's coming up over the next couple of weeks and yes we do mention the "C" word! Click on the play button now.

Better Late Than Never!  Here's Episode 30, a bit later than we'd like it but we have been SO busy! Anyway, highlights of this week's episode are an interview with Christian Garrick, leader of the amazing Budapest Cafe Orchestra who are playing a sold show in the Handa Theatre at Wells Maltings tomorrow, and the return of the competition to win tickets for a future Maltings show.

If you've not got your tickets already, you're too late! Book early for all Maltings events or you may be disappointed - tomorrow's concert will undoubtedly see a a few people turning up in the hope that there will be a seat left! Don't be one of  those people BooK Early in future.

Hello Again  Everyone! The eagle-eared listeners amongst you will have realised that we didn't release a podcast last week. We do apologise for this, but sometimes there is more work to be done than we can fit in a week and other things have to take priority. However we're back with an interview with the people behind The North Norfolk Festival Of Literature and Landscape, Vicky and Charles Rangeley-Wilson. In addition Simon and Mike chat about what's coming up in the next couple of weeks at Wells Maltings. And there is mention of the Competition returning to the podcast...

www.wellsmaltings.org.uk

Episode 28 features an interview with Mary Lincoln whose one woman show, Marcella's Minute to Midnight comes to the Maltings on the 27th September and also we find out what it's like to have your 150th birthday party at Wells Maltings! "What?" I hear you say incredulously. Listen to the podcast to find out what we are talking about. All some sad news this week... Mollie, who apart from working Front of House in our cafe, makes the wonderful tray bakes and scones you have been enjoying in recent months is leaving us. Simon speaks to he to find out why. We had hoped to include another competition in this week's episode, but unfortunately we couldn't fit it all in. However, next week ...

www.wellsmaltings.org.uk

First an apology as this episode is late being uploaded due to a very busy Sunday at the Maltings after a power cut the night before had disrupted our systems and the internet in parts of Wells was down so we couldn't take card payments or use our phones for half the day! This week we feature an interview with Ed Patrick who will be coming to Wells Maltings on Friday the 19th September with his show Catch Your Breath about the secret life of a sleepless anaesthetist! We also talk about NT Live Inter Alia which was shown last week and if you missed it, we are showing it again later in September.

www.wellsmaltings.org.uk

What's happening this week? Well you might as well just listen and find out, but in brief, Simon and Mike chat about what's been happening this last week of the summer holidays. Do any of you know of a new Wells resident called Caspar who came and performed at the Pick of Open Mic last Thursday? We mention him in this week's podcast, so if you know him, please tell him. For all you cryptic crossword fans out there - or even those of you who find cryptic crosswords a little too cryptic -this week's guest on the podcast is Peter Moore Fuller, who will be presenting a Crossword Workshop on the 4th November at Wells Maltings. It's definitely something that Mike will be putting in his diary! As always, if you have any ideas for what you'd like to hear about on the Maltings Matters Podcast. Do you like our competitions? Let us know! Perhaps there'll be another one in the next episode.

What's been happening and what's to come at Wells Maltings in the near future. Writing that sentence reminded me of a certain Dickens novel, and, dare I say it, the dreaded C word is mentioned in this episode, but don't worry, we're not talking about it quite yet!

www.wellsmaltings.org.uk

After the frantically busy Wells Carnival week we bring you another tale of the Flatly Amateur Acting Society (pronounced Farse) shenanigans, courtesy of Madelaine Sewter. Also, Simon takes you through the highlights of the entertainment we have coming up at Wells Maltings in the next couple of weeks.

www.wellsmaltings.org.uk

This week is a bit different from our usual format because it's Wells Carnival Time! We take the roving mic out into the streets of Wells-Next-The-Sea and talk to some visitors and locals about the Carnival. If you've never experienced it we hope you will pick up some of the Carnival vibes from this week's episode and encourage you to come and try out the real thing next year!

www.wellsmaltings.org.uk

It's the start of Wells-Next-The-Sea Carnival!  This week Simon once  greets the Royal Personage, Queen Katy. She tells us about some of the events happening during Carnival Week and what it's all for.  Also of course, the usual rundown of Maltings Events during the coming week. Due to a technical issue we missed out the two Local History Talks (on Tuesday and Thursday morning) in the events rundown for which we apologise, but check the website for full details. If you're interested in the history of Wells-Next-The-Sea (and if not why not?!) and we're sure you'll learn a lot of interesting things. Please note that we will be taking our roving microphone out to meet some of the visitors to the town as well as some of the residents.
