Hey spiritual seeker! My name’s Sarah Haykel and I’m the host of Welcoming God, a podcast for spiritual seekers.

In this podcast, I’ll be sharing the goodness of Welcoming God back into my life after years of rebelling against the God of my Catholic upbringing and years of honest seeking on a personal spiritual path. I’ll share my consistently evolving understanding of God and what I’m learning on the path, to help create a God accessible to the every day person.

We’ll have honest and sometimes hilarious conversations about how to go from being a “spiritual” person to a God-loving person. Understanding God as a benevolent guide. What does it mean to have a relationship with God? What does it mean to surrender to God? Cultivating a spiritually mature understanding of God. Learning how to discern God’s truth and will for our lives. How to cultivate the most important relationship you’ll ever have, with God, on a daily, moment to moment basis.

Come along on this spiritually rEvolutionary journey where we get to know God.

This podcast is marked as explicit because there may be swearing or content appropriate for mature audiences in some of the episodes.

I talk about the ongoing work of honoring our worth and value even when we don't know we can believe it. The fact that our worth and value are inherent in us can be an anchor for spiritual seekers who feel tired of striving.

I also name the harder edge of faith: suffering. Trauma, loss, and fear don’t make the idea of unconditional love easy. I don’t offer a neat answer for why painful things happen, because I don’t have one. For years I tried to let God and Jesus into my heart and nothing changed, until a series of events early this year helped me open to receiving It. That becomes the thread of the whole conversation: the Christ light and love isn’t something I manufacture through effort, I think it’s a God presence that has always been here, waiting for my consent!

If you’re navigating faith deconstruction, returning to Christianity, or simply craving a more personal relationship with Jesus, this reflection offers language for that in-between place you may be in.

I also talk about the long path that leads to these moments: seeking, reading, visiting different churches, learning from teachers, and staying committed to the questions. Quick note: I sometimes use swear words, and we may touch on adult content!

I talk about a simple practice that helped me stay connected to Lent: daily Lenten readings. From there, I explore why Lent can feel so confronting. It asks us to look at ourselves, repair relationships, seek forgiveness, make amends, and let go of habits that keep us stuck. I also rethink the idea of fasting. Instead of only giving up sweets or alcohol, what if we abstained from judgment, critical self talk, or the patterns that cause disfunction in our lives?

My own Lenten commitment is abstaining from second guessing myself, which becomes a practice of trust in God and attentiveness to the Holy Spirit. I share journaling prompts you can use, then name the hardest piece for me: facing the reality of what happened to Jesus. Finally, I hold up spring as a living metaphor for the Easter season, a reminder that life pushes through cold soil toward light, and we can too.

If this resonates, subscribe to Welcoming God, share the episode with a friend, and leave a review so more people can find the show. Walking into church decked in Christmas lights, I felt overcome with joy—and then a sudden inner tension, the old fear that joy requires certainty, rose up immediately after. That crack revealed a tender truth: many of us were taught that belonging depends on perfect belief, and our bodies still brace at the holidays as if doubt disqualifies us from the feast!

We walk through that tension with care as I trace the child part that heard faith as force-fed and the present day adult me who still longs to belong choose to reframe celebration as an act of welcome rather than a test. We widen the lens to include the nativity story, the cultural warmth of Christmas, and the cosmic rhythm of the winter solstice—the return of the light that gives everyone a way in. Instead of passing a theology exam, we practice curiosity: let the manger be beautiful even if you’re unsure of every detail, let candles and cookies sit beside carols and quiet prayers, and let nature’s turning seasons preach their own kind of gospel.

At the heart of this finale is a simple claim: inclusion is not a loophole, it’s the point. Drawing on Jesus’s open table, I invite you to show up as you are—full believer, partial believer, curious skeptic, or somewhere unnamed—and to welcome every part of yourself to the celebration. We explore practical steps for sensing the body’s “brake pedal,” making room for mixed feelings, and receiving the season’s gifts without pretending. The blessing stretches across hemispheres and traditions: may the growing light carry us into a year with more joy, less suffering, and a deeper sense of home.

If this resonates, subscribe, leave a review, and share this episode with someone who needs permission to belong before they believe.

Visit WelcomingGod.com to sign up for our newsletter, download the ebook companion to season one, and connect with Sarah directly through the contact form at the bottom of the web page.

Music by Song Channel Music. Listen at SongChannelMusic.com

Support the show

Have you ever wondered if spiritual connection could be simpler than we make it? What if the most profound practice required nothing more than your willingness to be present?

Sitting With God is a simple practice that offers restoration and joy without elaborate steps or rigid structures. Unlike many spiritual disciplines that demand specific techniques, this approach simply invites you to pause and acknowledge the divine presence that's already here, right here in this moment with you. Whether for a moment between meetings or during a quiet afternoon, this practice creates space for genuine connection with what I call "The One True Source."

I began this practice years ago when a spiritual coach encouraged me to spend daily time with God. Those late afternoon sessions felt like a simple gift to give myself after the workday – restorative moments of pure presence filled with joy. Now, after a year of practicing centering prayer, I've returned to Sitting With God for its beautiful simplicity and profound nourishment.

The practice is remarkably accessible: just stop whatever you're doing and give yourself the grace of time to be with God. There are no rules. Sometimes I even doze off, but mostly I remain in a relaxed state, simply enjoying divine presence. Before automatically reaching for the TV remote or comfort food at day's end, consider whether something deeper is calling you to this sacred pause instead.

Ready for a gentle challenge?

Try Sitting With God daily for the next seven days, even if just for a moment. How will you remind yourself? Perhaps set an alarm, leave notes where you'll see them, or establish a specific time for this divine appointment. However you approach it, I'd love to hear how this practice unfolds for you.

Visit WelcomingGod.com to sign up for my newsletter and receive a free ebook that accompanies the first season of this podcast. That "shimmering" sensation might be more than coincidence; it could be an invitation to a deeper spiritual experience.

Drawing inspiration from Christine Valters Painter's book "Lectio Divina: The Sacred Art," I share a transformative practice that expands the ancient tradition of sacred reading into our multisensory daily lives. Lectio Divina traditionally involves allowing a word or phrase from sacred text to stand out—to "shimmer"—and become a focal point for meditation. But this approach extends beautifully beyond reading to visual experiences (Visio Divina), sounds (Audio Divina), and encounters with nature.

What makes this practice revolutionary is its embrace of both the beautiful and the challenging. That loud motorcycle disrupting your peace? The traffic jam making you late? These frustrations can become unexpected gateways to spiritual insight when approached with curiosity rather than resistance. I share my own experience with neighborhood noise disturbances and how viewing them through this contemplative lens offers new possibilities for processing difficult or annoying experiences and emotions.

The beauty of this practice lies in its simplicity and accessibility. You don't need special training, equipment, or even much time—just one to five minutes daily of noticing what shimmers at you and asking, "What is here for me?" This can happen during your commute, while washing dishes, or walking through your neighborhood. Sacred texts can come from any tradition that speaks to you, or even from poetry that feels meaningful.

Try this simple practice for the next seven days: Notice what shimmers at you daily—whether it feels good or not—and spend a few moments in contemplation with it.

Have you ever found yourself shocked by the beliefs of people who follow the same faith as you? That jarring moment when you realize someone reading the same Bible has arrived at conclusions that seem completely foreign—or even extreme—to you?

I recently experienced what I can only describe as a "veil-lifting moment" after attending a Bible study where I encountered perspectives that felt extreme compared to my understanding of Christianity. This led me down a rabbit hole of research where I discovered an even wider spectrum of interpretations than I could have imagined. The experience left me questioning not just others' beliefs, but my own approach to sharing my spiritual journey.

What struck me most was how we all engage in the same behavior—trying to convince others our interpretation is correct while dismissing views that don't align with ours. Yet Jesus's central message couldn't be clearer: love God completely and love your neighbor as yourself. He even said people would recognize his followers by their love for one another. So why do we spend so much energy arguing and judging instead of understanding and loving?

This episode invites us to create space between receiving information that doesn't resonate and immediately reacting to it. I share my personal struggle with this challenge and invite you to consider how you might approach differences with curiosity rather than defensiveness. What might happen if, instead of jumping to correct others, we paused to invite divine guidance into our conversations?

Whether you identify as a Christian or follow another spiritual path, the question remains the same: How do we honor our own truth while making room for others to honor theirs? And, more importantly, how do we allow others viewpoints, those that resonate and those that don't, to continue to grow, heal, expand and mature on our own spiritual journey?

Join me as we explore these important inquiries together, seeking not to win arguments but to embody the love at the heart of Jesus's teachings. <itunes:summary>Have you ever found yourself learning the same spiritual lesson over and over again, wondering why you keep forgetting what you thought you already knew?

Have you ever found yourself learning the same spiritual lesson over and over again, wondering why you keep forgetting what you thought you already knew? This fascinating exploration of our continuous learning journey reveals why repetition may be essential to spiritual growth.

At the heart of this episode lies a powerful metaphor: We are Mount Zion, not the weather that surrounds it. Drawing from Martin Laird's "Into the Silent Land," we examine how identifying with our thoughts and emotions (the weather) rather than our true, stable nature (the mountain) creates unnecessary suffering. This parallels Jesus's repeated instruction to his disciples to "stay awake" – a reminder of how easily we fall asleep to spiritual truth.

What makes this perspective particularly liberating is understanding that even our distractions and afflictive emotions are manifestations of divine presence. When we experience anger, fear, or jealousy, these aren't obstacles to overcome but expressions of the same "luminous vastness" that constitutes our essence. The challenge becomes integration – fully embodying these insights so they become part of who we are rather than concepts we occasionally remember.

How might you structure your life to support remembering your true nature? Whether through contemplative practice, physical reminders, or community support, finding practical ways to interrupt the forgetting pattern can transform your spiritual journey. Join us in exploring how we might participate in the evolutionary unfolding of consciousness itself by remembering who we truly are.

Don't miss our new ebook that guides you through season one with reflective questions – sign up at WelcomingGod.com to receive your copy and continue deepening your spiritual practice between episodes.

Music by Song Channel Music. Listen at SongChannelMusic.com

Go to WelcomingGod.com to subscribe to our email newsletter and receive updates about all things Welcoming God.

Find Martin Laird's book, Into The Silent Land, here.

Find Caroline Oaks book, Practice the Pause, here.

Find more about Keith Kristich's centering prayer community, Closer Than Breath, here.

Find The Cloud of Unknowing here.

Listen to Deepak Chopra on the podcast, Know Thyself here.

Find our more about Thomas Hubl's teachings and work here.

Support the show

What happens when we finally stop fighting reality and simply accept what is? Not resignation to circumstances, but a profound spiritual opening that transforms our relationship with life itself.

Most of us carry some form of denial—parts of reality we refuse to acknowledge or accept because they feel too painful, too threatening, or too disruptive to our sense of safety and happiness. This episode explores the fascinating dynamics of acceptance and denial, revealing how our resistance to what is actually attempts to protect us, yet ultimately holds us back from experiencing the fullness of divine grace and guidance.

Through thoughtful examination, we discover that denial often serves as a psychological buffer, shielding us from disappointment, fear, and discomfort. But what happens when we gently lower these defenses? As Eckhart Tolle suggests, accepting reality doesn't mean we have to like everything that happens—it simply means we stop arguing with what is, creating space to respond from inspiration instead of knee jerk reactivities.

The spiritual paradox revealed in this exploration is profound: when we fully accept the present moment exactly as it is, we open ourselves to divine inspiration and genuine transformation. God's benevolence becomes more accessible when we're willing to see things as they truly are, not as we wish them to be. Through practices of inquiry—journaling, silent reflection, or seeking professional support—we can cultivate this acceptance and discover what's possible when we embrace life on life's terms.

Ready to deepen this practice? When the God you thought you knew becomes a question mark rather than an exclamation point? This deeply personal episode explores the disorienting yet ultimately transformative experience of going through a spiritual crisis.

After an unexpected ending to a five-year relationship with my spiritual coach, I found myself adrift in questions about God's benevolence and the nature of spiritual truth. This crisis prompted me to examine how we navigate periods of profound uncertainty about our most fundamental beliefs. Rather than viewing these questioning periods as unnecessary or negative, I share why they're actually essential components of authentic spiritual growth—clearing space for deeper truths to emerge, ie. spiritual maturation.

Drawing from my own experience, I offer practical guidance for supporting yourself through existential questioning. From finding the right therapist or spiritual director to establishing daily journaling practices, connection within nature, and community support, these anchor points provide stability while navigating unfamiliar spiritual territory. I explore the critical skill of discernment—learning to distinguish between fear-based resistance and genuine spiritual guidance—and how embodied wisdom helps us recognize what paths are truly aligned with our spiritual development.

The journey continues as we continue riding the wave of life. And, as uncomfortable as existential questioning can be, it opens us to what Thomas Hübl calls "the receptivity of revelation"—the capacity to receive new insights that transform our understanding of life, God, and ourselves. Join me in embracing the sacred discomfort of not knowing, where our deepest spiritual growth often happens.

Sign up at WelcomingGod.com for our new ebook that will help you integrate these tools for navigating your own spiritual journey.

Music by Song Channel Music. Listen at SongChannelMusic.com

Go to WelcomingGod.com to subscribe to our email newsletter and receive updates about all things Welcoming God.

Check out Thomas Hubl's work here.

Support the show

What happens when we pause to notice what's happening within us? Freedom emerges in that space between stimulus and response.

This guided mindfulness meditation introduces a simple yet profound practice of noticing—bringing awareness to breath, physical sensations, thoughts, and emotions without judgment. Unlike many meditation practices that feel disconnected from everyday life, this approach is designed to be integrated into your daily activities, creating more choice in how you respond to challenging situations.

We explore the fascinating concept of confirmation bias—how our existing beliefs create filters through which we interpret all experiences. When someone doesn't respond warmly to us, do we automatically assume it confirms our unworthiness? Or can we create space to consider alternative perspectives? The practice of noticing helps us recognize these interpretive patterns as they arise.

The physical component of mindfulness serves as our anchor. By bringing attention to bodily sensations—the weight of our body supported by a chair, the movement of breath, areas of tension or relaxation—we establish presence that grounds us in reality. These physical cues often reveal emotional states operating below conscious awareness, giving us valuable information about what's happening internally.

Throughout the meditation, we bring God into our practice of noticing, asking for guidance and understanding with the sensations we experience. This spiritual dimension adds depth to our awareness, connecting us to wisdom beyond our limited perspectives.

Whether you're new to meditation or a seasoned practitioner, this episode offers practical guidance for cultivating presence that transforms reactivity into conscious choice. Try the practice today and notice how it changes your experience of everyday moments.

Prayer transforms our spiritual journey from transactional requests to authentic divine communion. Whether you've prayed your entire life or struggle to understand what prayer means, this episode offers fresh perspectives on connecting with the God through prayer.

The foundation of meaningful prayer isn't found in perfect words or formulas but in genuine intention. We explore various approaches—from traditional petitionary prayer to contemplative sitting with God—and examine what makes each practice powerful. Many of us unconsciously default to treating prayer as a spiritual to-do list or desperate bargaining tool when life gets difficult. But what happens when we shift our perspective?

The concept of "the perfect prayer" offers a revolutionary approach: "God, may your perfect will be done for the greater good of all." This simple phrase releases us from the burden of knowing what's best and opens us to divine wisdom beyond our limited understanding. It requires courage to surrender our agenda and trust in something greater, but through this surrender we can experience profound freedom and peace.

Christian contemplative traditions offer another pathway through practices like centering prayer, where we simply sit in God's presence without agenda, consenting to God's divine presence within us. This form of prayer creates space for transformation that goes beyond words and concepts. Even brief moments of intentional connection can profoundly impact our spiritual journey.

This week, consider your true intention when you pray. Is it to get what you want, or to align with divine will? Choose one prayer practice that resonates with you and commit to it daily. Your spiritual journey deepens not through perfection but through consistent, authentic connection with the divine presence that holds us all.

Music by Song Channel Music. Listen at SongChannelMusic.com

Go to WelcomingGod.com to subscribe to our email newsletter and receive updates about all things Welcoming God.

Listen to MC Hammer's song, Pray, here.

Keith Kristich at Closer Than Breath, a "contemplative community for the spiritual seeker."

Richard Rohr and the Center for Action and Contemplation.

Living the Sacred Yes, Affirmations for Action by Rev. Creating space for authentic connection with God doesn't require hours of meditation or elaborate rituals—it simply needs our heartfelt desire and commitment.

We live in a world where everything competes for our attention. Responsibilities, relationships, work, entertainment—all pull us in different directions, making it challenging to prioritize our spiritual wellbeing. Yet the foundation of living spiritually begins with carving out intentional moments to nurture our relationship with the divine. This episode explores how to create a sustainable daily practice that invites God's presence into our daily lives.

The secret lies in starting small. Whether it's one minute or ten, choosing a specific time each day creates a sacred appointment with God that gradually transforms our spiritual awareness. Like "plugging into source"—connecting to the infinite energy that sustains all life—these daily touch points cultivate a deeper relationship with both ourselves and the divine. Through consistent practice, we develop discernment, learning to recognize God's guidance amid the noise of our own thoughts and external influences.

Your practice should evolve with you—flexible yet consistent, disciplined yet grace-filled. For how long? What form will your practice take? Standing in an auditorium listening to praise singers declare "God, we know you love us," I experienced a heart-breaking moment of clarity – all my spiritual seeking had somehow missed this essential truth. This revelation marked the beginning of my authentic journey opening my heart up to God.

Working with my spiritual coach became pivotal when he asked, "Do you believe God is benevolent?" My immediate "no" revealed deep-seated anger and betrayal I felt toward the Divine. Years of combined spiritual coaching and trauma therapy helped me uncover what blocked my relationship with a loving God. I learned not to believe "the first lie" – that I wasn't whole, complete, or perfect already, in the eyes of God. And understanding the truth that nothing can ever separate us from God; we're always connected to the Source of It All.

Jesus taught that the greatest commandment is loving your neighbor as yourself and loving God with all your heart. This deeply reflective episode explores the profound benefits of "going with God" rather than against the spiritual current that's here to guide our lives.

Building on our previous exploration of barriers to spiritual surrender, I invite you to remember those pivotal moments when you listened to that quiet voice of truth within, followed it despite reservations, and witnessed the results. These moments of authentic spiritual choice aren't just random coincidences—they're glimpses into what's possible when we prioritize our most essential relationship, that with The One True Source.

I share my conviction that our connection with the divine constitutes "the only relationship that truly matters," forming the foundation for everything else in our lives. Unlike temporal relationships that change or end, this spiritual partnership offers consistent companionship throughout life's ups and downs. I reveal a deeply personal note I keep in my kitchen: "God says, 'Just stay with me...' And God's sentiment is that if you do go elsewhere, that's okay too, but 'come back to me,' God says. 'Always come back!'"—words that capture the unconditional nature of divine love. God's always here waiting patiently to partner in union with us!

This episode acknowledges that following God's guidance doesn't eliminate suffering, but provides God's presence through all experiences. The present moment becomes our meeting place with the divine—"pure loving presence" available right now.

I encourage you to spend just five minutes reflecting on what benefits you've experienced when following rather than resisting spiritual guidance.

Your answers might surprise you and transform how you approach this most essential relationship.

Please subscribe wherever you listen and consider leaving a review or rating to help others discover this journey of spiritual exploration.

Music by Song Channel Music. Listen at SongChannelMusic.com

Go to WelcomingGod.com for more info about the podcast and to subscribe to our email newsletter.

Support the show

After years of rebellion against organized religion, I felt an unexpected call to reopen my heart to God and Jesus in 2014. Yet even then, when my spiritual coach asked me in 2019 if I believed God was benevolent, my honest answer was "no." I felt betrayed, controlled, and judged by a deity who seemed to be sometimes laughing at my struggles rather than supporting me through them. I was so wrong about this Source! But, it would take me years of spiritual coaching to understand this (more on this in another episode!).

The transformative practice of Centering Prayer became my sanctuary during an existential crisis in 2024. Sitting in silence with divine presence taught me to find comfort in darkness and uncertainty. Through this contemplative tradition, alongside influences from Buddhism, Taoism, Sufism, yogic philosophy and more, I've discovered something remarkable—when I truly surrender to divine guidance (even when it contradicts my immediate desires), the outcomes are consistently better than anything I could orchestrate alone! So true.

This podcast speaks directly to spiritual seekers who feel repelled by religious language but sense a calling toward something greater.
