The album merges the current members of Cactus with a big-name, star laden, ensemble of guest artists, all of whom have called the group among their biggest influences. Featured along with the current Cactus band is a who’s who of blues and rock icons: Guitarists Joe Bonamassa, Ted Nugent, Pat Travers, Warren Hayes, Vernon Reid, Steve Stevens, Johnny A (The Yardbirds), Ty Tabor (King’s X) and bassists Billy Sheehan (Mr. Big), Dug Pinnick (King’s X) Tony Franklin (The Firm, Blue Murder), Phil Soussan (Ozzy Osbourne, Billy Idol), Rudy Sarzo (Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne), Kenny Aaronson (ex- Joan Jet and The Yardbirds), as well as members of Government Mule, Vixen, Rainbow, Zebra, and Whitesnake. For over thirty-five years PANGAEA has been creating music that intrigues the mind and inspires the soul. Since their formation in 1989 they have garnered interest in over fifty nations across the globe. The band’s tight, melodic ensemble playing, highly proficient level of musicianship and excellent songwriting and singing, is reminiscent of prog rock’s classic era while also showcasing the band’s modern era sensibilities.The band was formed initially as Artica in 1989 in Tulsa, Oklahoma by Corey and Andi Schenck, Ron Poulsen, Darrell Masingale (guitar/vocals) and Keith Tinker. Lead vocalist Steve Osborn joined the band in 1991, establishing the lineup that would become Pangaea. The concept for the band was to create a sound based on the classic rock and progressive rock of the past while utilizing modern sounds and styles. The idea was simple: amalgamate memorable melodies; rich harmonies; powerful rhythms, and other musical elements into compact song structures. Their first release was a ten-song album entitled Le Collage D’Exoticolours in 1991. Tinker left the band in 1992 although he still performs and records with the band on occasion. From 1992 to ’94, they recorded and released three more albums – Rotating Oceans, Grey, and The Guild…with each release helping them to garner increased national exposure. 1995 saw the release of the EP, Liquid Placidity, which caught the attention of producer/musician Robert Berry (whose credits include 3, GTR, Greg Kihn and Keith Emerson). The band went into Berry’s studio in 1996 and recorded The Rite of Passage album, which sold well, received radio airplay on numerous radio stations both domestically and overseas and put the band on the musical map internationally. Berry produced the band’s albums Welcome to the Theatre (1999) and A Time & a Place(2002), both of which continued to garner the band critical praise and increase their fan base. Berry also produced the band’s The Reckoning album in 2003, but as-of-yet, it remains unreleased. In 2005, Pangaea recorded acoustic arrangements of several songs at the home of actor/comedian Dan Aykroyd and his brother Peter Aykroyd. This led to an unplugged tour of Borders Books stores, Hard Rock Cafes, and other venues. The band performed in 2008 at a Houston Dynamo soccer match before 12,000 people but after that show, the band went on an extended hiatus that lasted 15 years. Eventually deciding to reform in 2023, the band added multi-instrumentalist Scott Draughon to its classic lineup and recorded the new album, Beowulf, with Robert Berry back on board as producer. The first single from the album, Tomorrow Will Come, was released in April. I sat as president of the Kern River Conservancy for 5 years and am continually proud of what KRC has done for this magnificent river! Sam JohnsonWild Bearings, LLC is an extension of my passion for the outdoors and the habit of living “slightly” on the edge with my safety clicked off. My biggest passion is remote fly fishing, as well as writing about the waters of the Appalachians, Rockies and Sierras. My rod of choice is bamboo, so another passion is making, collecting, selling and fishing them. Also worth mentioning is my role as Executive Producer and Co-host of Wild Bearings Outdoors, a TV show that takes viewers to exotic fly-fishing destinations and showcases their history, lore and angling opportunities. The show premiered in 2023 and airs on The Country Network. One other bad habit of mime is playing the bagpipes, and as a member of John Mohr Mackintosh Pipes & Drums in Atlanta, I spend a lot of time performing around the country.When not chasing things in the wild, or making outdoor films, I’m a partner in a boutique transaction advisory practice that helps late stage emerging growth, and lower mid-market companies, prepare for, and execute buy / sell transactions. I also sit on several corporate and non-profit boards. But in the end, when it’s all said and done, I just want to be known as a red-blooded, flag waving American, performer, traveler, kilted fly fisherman, talker, loyal friend, gentleman, do-gooder, mountain man, Christian and an occasional prevaricator. I’ve also been described using slightly stronger adjectives, but fortunately they’re in a slight minority! Chris SloanGrowing up in a very small town in Texas was cool, especially since we lived just a few miles from Lake Lewisville. Total population 3,000 meant small town, small community, and great outdoor activities abound. I grew up bass fishing not only on Lake Lewisville, but my uncle had property in east Texas that had a 23-acre private lake where the bass were huge, the crappie fat, and the brim aggressive. I met my better half in that small town and 40 years later we are still Texas strong. Not long after college I got into golf and enjoyed playing for many years. But about 2014 a bug (pun intended) jumped up and hooked me with an even greater sport… fly fishing! I was always curious about the sport and it wasn’t until I met Sam, who is a true fly fishing pioneer, that the dream of learning how to fly fish became a reality.I truly enjoy the nostalgia of the sport and especially the history of fly tying and bamboo rods. Justin Townsend (Choctaw) has been a culinarian and raconteur in the wild food world for over a decade. His passion for hunting, fishing, foraging, and the outdoors stems from his upbringing in Southeastern Oklahoma and his cultural heritage as a tribal member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. Some of his first memories are bass fishing trips with his grandfather and cooking deer meat at home with his grandmother. Justin loves spending time with his family, teaching them to hunt and fish, rewatching Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown for the umpteenth time, and traveling around North America meeting new people, hunting, fishing, exploring, and tasting new food. In 2005, Justin started college at the University of New Orleans in New Orleans, LA, where he earned a BA degree in Anthropology and a BA in Geography, focusing on Food and Culture. In 2008, he started his first restaurant job after wandering the streets of New Orleans in search of a cooking job. Luckily for him, he wandered into the restaurant of James Beard award-winning Chef Frank Brigtsen at Brigtsen’s, where he laid a strong foundation for his culinary career, taking him from the Gulf Coast to the West Coast and then on to the Florida Keys. Justin’s last restaurant job was from 2018-2020 as the Executive Chef of Mellow Cafe & Gastropub in Key West Florida. Mellow Cafe was an upscale coastal inspired gastropub focused on fresh, sustainable ingredients. In 2011, Justin created the outdoor media company Harvesting Nature. His focus was to create an online community focused on inspiring people to get outdoors to harvest their own food from the wild. Over the years, Harvesting Nature has blossomed into a leading brand in the wild food space, serving thousands of people and providing content through their website, social media, print media, podcasts, in person wild food camps and television. In addition to content for Harvesting Nature, Justin self published his first cookbook, “Eat Wild Game” in 2017 and has written hundreds of articles and recipes for online and print publications like MeatEater, Outdoor News, Harvesting Nature Magazine, Spearing Magazine, Backcountry Journal, Guidefitter, On The Fly Magazine, San Diego Magazine, Keys Weekly, and many more. The original band was formed in 1968 in Los Angeles as The Flying Burrito Brothers. Its classic lineup featured country rock pioneer, the late Gram Parsons, and former founding Byrds members bassist Chris Hillman and drummer Michael Clarke, along with eventual original Eagles member Bernie Leadon on lead guitar and pedal steel guitar genius Sneaky Pete Kleinow.The band’s first two albums, The Gilded Palace of Sin (which Rolling Stone listed at number 192 on its list of 500 Greatest Albums of All Time) and Burrito Deluxe, remain highly influential, acclaimed works which helped put country-rock on the map. Because Parsons and Keith Richards were good friends, Burrito Deluxe contains the first issued version of the Mick Jagger/Keith Richards-written song "Wild Horses," released almost a year before the The Rolling Stones own take on it appeared on Sticky Fingers. These days, the band, who formed the current incarnation of the Burritos in 2009, and are now based in Nashville, features Chris P. James on keys and lead vocals, guitarist Steve Allen, Tony Paoletta on pedal steel and drummer Peter Young…all extremely talented musicians who love being involved with the band’s legacy and creating new music to keep that legacy alive.Chris, Tony, and Pete have played together since the 1990 starting together in the band Mr. Hyde. I started fishing at an early while growing up on the windswept rock of Iceland. My parents often joke that they didn’t get to see much of me during the warmer months, as any small stream or ditch would captivate my attention for weeks on end. When I was six years old, I received a fly rod for Christmas and started tying flies with materials from pulled apart shoelaces and pillows, and the addiction we all know as fly fishing officially took hold. When my mom and I moved to California in 2005, I started bringing a 6-piece rod to school everyday since it fit in my backpack, and I would take the bus and explore the warm water ponds and freshwater creeks in the area. This was my first introduction to the fisheries of the Central Coast.I started guiding during the summer of 2014, in the West Rangá, one of Iceland's most productive salmon rivers, and home to the most beautiful brown trout in the world. I managed to work my way into the guiding community by starting as a dishwasher when I was 17, and fishing during my off time, and it didn’t take long for my intense enthusiasm to pay off as I started filling in for other guides and in no time had a summer schedule filled with clients.Spending my fall, winter and spring on the Central Coast of California has allowed me to fish over 300 days a year for most of my adult life, and I have explored much of what this area has to offer, and now guide here for bass, carp, surf perch and striped bass. This area has some awesome fishing in some of the most scenic areas anywhere, with the most consistently mild weather you can ask for. Whether you want to stalk carp in ankle deep water on the freshwater flats, or cast little sand crab imitations into the surf for perch, the Central Coast offers a year round fishery that should not be taken for granted, and should be utilized. This mighty threesome of big dog guitar slingers takes no prisoners when it comes to red-hot guitar performances, both live and in-studio.This trio of six-string guitar beasts are accompanied on the album by drummer Jeff Simon and bassist Nathaniel Peterson, both fine musicians in their own right.The band’s name derives from the term Texas scratch, which is a style of guitar picking (also known as the Carter Scratch) said to have originated by Mother Maybelle Carter back in 1927.Their combined efforts have resulted in a debut album consisting of – obviously - fiery, passionate guitar licks everywhere you turn, soaked in the blues and kicked in the ass by the blues-rock they all love to play.Some of the song titles on the album alone lets the listener know what they are in for – What the Devil Loves, Trip Hammer, Showdown and Louisiana Cock Fight – give a few clues as to what to expect musically.But the album is far from just a six-string shootout or shredding contest between top gun guitarists; the nine total songs on the album feature seven original songs written by a combination of Suhler, Whittington and Converse with killer arrangements, passionate vocals, tight ensemble playing, and clever lyrics. Although photography is a self-taught skill, during this time, Anabel had also collaborated with several well-known photographers, attended multiple workshops and panels, and received a few certifications- all in order to increase her knowledge and further her passion. Anabel’s love for art and creation has always been an innate feeling, and she prides herself on having a natural sensitivity for composition, aesthetic, and various other aspects of visual art. This aids in her keen ability to understand what it takes to make a great photograph, not just a good one. The camera is as much a part of her as her arm, and became an extension of her body. Alongside this, Anabel’s life-long passion for animals and music brings forth her strongest work. Simultaneously, Anabel’s teenage love for music manifested in her desire to photograph musicians and their various escapades. Having shot her very first musician portraits at the age of sixteen and her first concert the same year, her music photography career began rolling very quickly. Despite the industry’s hardships and tumultuous statistics, Anabel persevered in her desire to be a part of the music industry, albeit in a photographic sense. Since then, she has worked tirelessly with hundreds of bands, had her music photography published just as many times (in print and online), and received Senior Journalist positions at three music magazines, such as Outburn Magazine. She had previously worked for Substream Magazine, and had her work featured in Revolver Magazine, AP, Blabbermouth, and more. Anabel loves promoting all of the musicians that grace the front of her lens, and found a deep love for writing about their music. As of 2017, Anabel can officially say that her music work has reached an international level, with her photography being published in various music outlets within Finland, England, and Norway. However, potentially the most unique and interesting twist in Anabel’s career is her partnership and work with exotic animals. Something that most definitely happened on a whim, sprinkled with a bit of luck, Anabel fell into the world of wolfdogs (commonly, but by scientific standards improperly, called “wolf hybrids”) which then led to her work with various species of foxes, dingoes, and tigers. Anabel fell deeply in love with these incredible animals and has a very strong admiration for the individuals whose entire lives are dedicated to the wellbeing and conservation of our natural world. The connection one feels when looking into the eyes of a wolf is unbelievable. Anabel DFlux has partnered with marvelous organizations to bring these creatures to photo shoots, and uses the photographs to debunk myths surrounding the animals, encourage the public to step up and protect their wild counterparts, and to raise funds for conservation. Johnny Rutherford who plays bass, Doug Johnson on Drums and Doug Zilmer on guitar.I asked them individually how they got into playing their instruments and why they keep playing music after all these years. We talk about how the band got started, bands that influenced them back in the day and some modern bands that they listen to as well. We talk about other legendary bands of the Ventura, California music scene as well as the iconic music house “Charlies by the Sea” and all the bands that came out of that club. Did the record in Nashville with Skidd Mills and the Contraband boys. Had a single. Called it “Moment of Silence”. Went to #51 on Billboard. Kept playing shows the whole way. Toured/played shows with Ted Nugent, Alice Cooper, Daughtry, Cadillac Three, Candlebox, Uncle Kracker, Eric Church, Dierks Bentley, Huey Lewis and countless others. Lance Lopez is an American blues rock and Texas blues singer, guitarist, and songwriter. Lopez has been influenced by Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Jeff Beck has described Lopez as "a very exciting and intense blues guitarist". Lopez has spoken over the years about being mentored by both Billy Gibbons and Johnny Winter. Lopez was age 16 at the time he met Gibbons, and they have remained friends throughout.Over the period between 2008 and 2011, Lopez toured in Europe extensively, playing at larger music festivals and supporting acts including ZZ Top, Whitesnake, Def Leppard, and Rod Stewart. In 2009, Lopez had signed a new recording contract with MIG (Made In Germany) Music / String Commander, who were based in Hanover, Germany. In 2010, the album Salvation From Sundown, which was produced by Jim Gaines was released by MIG. It was issued in limited edition format alongside a DVD of the Rockpalast concert recorded on July 25, 2009. It was deliberately arranged in a Texas blues style, which led to Jeff Beck calling Lopez, "a very exciting and intense blues guitarist". In March 2012, MIG Music released the sixth album from Lopez, Handmade Music. As with the previous release, the album was produced by Jim Gaines and recorded at the Ardent Studios in Memphis, Tennessee.In 2012, Supersonic Blues Machine was formed by Lopez, the drummer Kenny Aronoff, and the bassist and record producer Fabrizio Grossi. They released their debut album, West Of Flushing, South Of Frisco, which was recorded mainly by the three musicians separately and using Pro Tools technology to bring the various elements together. The same principle was used in selecting the guest musicians tracks to be added to the overall mix. The band was 'augmented' on the recording by Billy Gibbons, Robben Ford, Walter Trout, Warren Haynes, Eric Gales and Chris Duarte. Supersonic Blues Machine had its worldwide debut concert at the Holland International Blues Festival on June 4, 2016, in Grolloo, the Netherlands. The rigors of touring and the lifestyle caught up with Lopez around this time. Lopez stated "My own personal struggles were overcoming alcoholism, drug addiction and to start eating healthier, lose weight and exercise... I struggled for years drinking and drugging and eating badly while I was drinking... I became very overweight". Once recovered, Lopez noted about performing, "That still doesn't mean every night is perfect... but at least I can walk away and say I did the best I could and I was sober doing it".His next release was Live in NYC (2016), which was issued on Cleopatra Records and produced by Paul Nelson. While his first love was baseball, a serious eye injury ended those dreams early and he focused on music, which he studied in high school, at Stephen F. Austin State, and later at Texas Southern University, where he switched to tenor, earned a degree, and developed a progressive mastery and technique.In 1970 he moved to Los Angeles in pursuit of a musical career. He woodshedded with the Jazz Crusaders (Hubert had played with them in the '50s) and especially Hugh Masakela. His early gigs in the city were with pianist Walter Bishop, Jr., Doug Carn, and on his brother's CTI recordings. In 1972, he joined Earth, Wind & Fire for 18 months and was, in effect, its first saxophonist, playing both tenor and soprano; he played on the album Last Days and Time. In Los Angeles, he made the acquaintance of Donald Byrd. The two became friends and Byrd got Laws signed to Blue Note. His 1975 debut, Pressure Sensitive, got serious radio play despite landing at 73, and yielded the enduring jazz-funk classic "Always There." It has been covered and/or sampled by well over 100 artists. Laws was on his way. With his other '70s work -- 1976's Fever, Friends and Strangers, and Flame -- which boasted his first cross continental 12" hit "All for You," Laws established himself as a workhorse studio musician, playing on recordings by Ramsey Lewis, his sister Eloise, Arthur Adams, Gene McDaniels, and Wayne Henderson, to name a few.In the '80s, Laws was an international festival and club draw. Three singles from his first three albums all went gold, as did their respective long-players. He then moved back to the Fresno area to finish school. He has been blessed with two beautiful daughters, a grandson and the love of his life Ann . He can say that fly fishing has always been an obsession of his and so has the art of fly tying. He was a fly fishing guide and guided for 10 years and he still loves sharing his passion of fly fishing. In the last 10 years, he has developed a passion for chasing warm water fish that has now become an addiction. He has been a program leader for Project healing water for 12 yrs and he likes sharing his experience and teaching inner city youth how to fly fish. I do not use professional models or fancy lighting. If I did, I couldn't call this a hobby out of control. I have a very deep collection of images. From my backyard pond, here in Oregon, to far flung destinations like Alaska, the Bahamas, Chile, Argentina, New Zealand, Tonga, England, Mexico, Belize, Sierra Leone, Christmas Island and many more. Every decent fly fishing photographer has these kinds of lists, also. But, I have a little more time on the water than most. As an expert in geospatial methods and techniques, this project draws from his love for the outdoors, fly fishing for trout, and concern about the climate crisis and its broader impacts.Michael received a B.A. (1992) in International Affairs (minor in Italian), and a M.A. (1995), and Ph.D. (1998), in Geography, from the University of Colorado at Boulder.It is no surprise that the golden trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss aguabonita) is the official state fish of California. Despite its beauty, the future of the California golden trout is in question. Livestock grazing degrades the fragile native habitat of the state fish, while alien and invasive species like rainbow and brown trout hybridize with, and prey upon, the golden trout. Captain Chuck RaganFrom lakes and rivers of Texas, E. Tennessee & N. Georgia., bayous of SW Louisiana or the inshore/offshore salt and freshwater of Florida, Ragan grew up chasing fish. With a Cajun mother and Florida boy father, both avid anglers, he held a rod early on and though the Ragans moved often due to his father’s profession as a Veteran PGA pro, teacher and coach, the road always ended in water. Aside from their parents, Chuck and brother Paul fished aside paternal grandparents on the intercoastal of Daytona Bch. and maternal grandparents around Holly Bch. In Louisiana and along the Blanco River outside of Kyle, Tx. Fishing became a way of life in the family. Father Dave Ragan always seemed to relocate the family around prime fisheries whether he meant to or not and having a mama born and bred into it didn’t smother the flame one bit. As a teen, he fished bass lakes, beaches, inlets and canals in Sarasota on the Gulf of Florida. With itchy feet in 94, he left for Gainesville, FL. unknowingly continuing what would end up being his music career. As his band Hot Water Music became an international touring machine, Ragan saw the world. Moving to Gainesville followed by Micanopy in early 2000, he learned from Kip Street & Bill “The Gill” Sorton, new methods of angling and woodwork. When not working, you’d find him off the coast of Saint Augustine, Cedar Key or Shellmound chasing Redfish, offshore winching grouper or poling lilies after heavy bass and striper on Rodmans, St. Johns or the Suwannee River. In early 2000, Ragan left the South for California to marry Jill and continued a trade in carpentry, songwriting and fishing Pacific waters. He kept touring, this time with fishing rods in tow. As an angler and traveling musician, Ragan takes advantage of being in prime zones to fish and share music across the globe.Relocating to Grass Valley, CA. in 07, he continued his career in music and began exploring the waters of Northern California through the end of a fly line. Encouraged by peers Matt “Gilligan” Koles, Hogan Brown, Clay Hash and Tom Page, Ragan became a licensed guide and vowes that it was the organization called Cast Hope that was the driving force behind finally taking that step along with having kids in the scope for the future. Michael Pyle is a retired American professional mixed martial artist who competed in the welterweight division of the UFC. A professional competitor since 1999, Pyle is a former WEC Welterweight Champion, and has also competed in Strikeforce, Elite XC, Affliction, M-1 Global, and for the Los Angeles Anacondas of the IFL.Pyle was born and raised in Dresden, Tennessee until the age of 17 when he moved to Birmingham, Alabama. It was there that he began studying Taekwondo. One of his training partners told him, "Man you gotta check out this cage fighter stuff they got going on. There's this guy who lays on the ground and breaks peoples arms ..." The cage fighting they were talking about was the UFC. The man they were talking about was Royce Gracie, the masterful practitioner of the martial arts discipline known as Brazilian jiu-jitsu who won the tournaments at UFC 1, UFC 2 and UFC 4. Pyle created a gym in a 13 x 15-foot shed behind his mother's home in Dresden, searching for any instructional videos for Brazilian jiu-jitsu he could get his hands on as well attending seminars put together by the Gracie family, whenever they were close enough for him to make the drive. Simon Gawesworth is one of the 50 most influential fly fishers/ instructors on the planet. Born in the United Kingdom and now working for Farbanks Enterprises (Sage, Rio and Redington) in the state of Washington.Simon learnt to fish at the age of 6 and took up fly fishing when aged 8, being trained by his father - well-known fly-fishing instructor and author, John Gawesworth. By the time he left school at 16 to teach fly fishing Simon had become the British Junior casting champion, repeating the feat the next year. In the following years Simon broke seven British casting records and won the adult casting championships three times in succession, representing England in two European and one World Team Championships.With the collapse of the British Casting Association and the tournament casting scene in the UK, Simon turned his hand to competitive fly fishing. Over the following years Simon represented England in three home internationals (against Ireland, Scotland and Wales), two European championships and five World Championships, culminating in the prestige of becoming the England Team Captain and Manager for the 2003 World Championships in Spain.In January 2001 Simon and his wife moved to the United States to start working for a new fly line company called RIO Products, based out of Idaho Falls, ID. Working for then owners Jim & Kitty Vincent, Simon quickly took on the marketing role for RIO Products, as well as developing and designing fly lines for the brand.During his career Simon has written numerous articles for the fishing press, published three books on spey casting, presented five instructional videos and DVD’s, appeared on numerous television and radio shows, demonstrated casting at fly fishing shows around the world and is recognized as one of the leading authorities on Spey casting and fly-casting instruction. In addition, Simon is the host of RIO’s acclaimed “How To” fly fishing video series, as well as the main presenter in RIO’s Fly Fishing Tips video series. His relaxed, easy to understand teaching and presentation manner is followed and loved by thousands of fly fishers around the world.He is an FFI (previously FFF) Master and THCI (Two Handed Casting Instructor) certified instructor and also holds the APGAI and STANIC diplomas for Fly Fishing Instruction in the UK. Kayla also enjoys hunting and was raised hunting rabbits, quail, doves, ducks, deer etc. but has fallen in love with the challenge of archery deer hunting and does that more than the later. Kaya believes in staying true to herself and not conforming to the rest of the world. Being a girl on her own boat throwing 9" swimbaits for giant largemouth bass, on a 10+ mile hike with a 40-pound backpack holding a bow in hand searching for deer, or in the gym lifting weights like most of the guys do. The 26-year-old Californian began kayaking at age 6, ran his first class V rapid at age nine, and was a known name in the California kayaking scene by the time he hit high school. Being the son of Tom Moore – owner of Sierra South Paddle Sports in Kernville, California, Evan grew up on the banks of the Kern River and was part of the whitewater scene practically from birth. Growing up, kayaking wasn’t his only passion. Evan was a very accomplished high school football Quarterback which led him to Sacramento to play football at one of the top Junior Colleges in the country. Although he was extremely dedicated to football, something was missing in his life - whitewater kayaking. After a long hard decision, Evan walked away from football to pursue kayaking and has not looked back since. He’s been to eight different countries in the last year chasing the biggest and hardest whitewater the planet has to offer. “I’ve set both local and global goals for myself as a kayaker. I want to become the first person to run every inch of whitewater on the Kern River, and I want to find new whitewater in all corners of the Earth. Doing that requires great gear like Kokatat makes.
