"I do not accept on its surface his arguments as to why" he dropped out, Roe said during an appearance Saturday on the podcast "Detroit in Black and White."

"I have told this to him, to face," he said. "I went to the Tigers game with his son Tuesday; that would be the third time that, you know, I've argued with him about the wisdom of that decision."

In a statement in May, when dropping out of the race Duggan said: 

"If we were even in the polls and behind in fundraising, we have a path to winning. If we were behind in the polls and even in fundraising, we have a path. But we’re behind in both. ... I no longer feel good about our chances to win."

Roe also said he didn't buy into Duggan's argument that opposition to the Iran war and rising gas prices was creating more unity among Democrats. Some also thought he had big challenges getting name recognition in different parts of the state.

"You know, Duggan's argument is...the war in Iran was overtaking the race, my ass," Roe said. "The governor of Michigan has nothing to do with the war in Iran."

"Why six months from an election would you make this decision to drop out when you're polling at 20 percent-plus? You were competitive."

"I live in Bloomfield Hills. How many Republicans came up to me, 'Can Duggan win? I can't wait to vote for him. He's great.' It happened several times a week."

"Duggan's not a Republican on a single issue, not one, and I had argued that with them when they say that he's an independent...He's a Democrat who took the label away from his name."

"He's the only candidate in either party...who had a story to tell. When you look at his leadership in the city of Detroit, what he inherited and where that city has gone over the 12 years of his leadership, there is a story to tell. And you can travel the state and point to the accomplishments of that story."

"Jocelyn Benson does not have a story to tell. John James does not have a story to tell to show people what is possible."

Roe also talked about Republicans making inroads among Black voters in the city of Detroit.

"Since 2024, the only demographic group in the broad political universe that has moved closer to Donald Trump is the Black community," he said. "Now, that is primarily Black men who don't vote quite at the rate that Black women do. Black women have not moved at all; they don't feel any better about Donald Trump today than they did two years ago. But you have seen some movement with Black men."

"The spirit of Hubbard is still in this city. The spirit of racism still dwells in this city. This is a city that has prospered with your mosques and your call to prayer, but yet it's on the back of my people, it's on the back of Black people, that we are funding everything you do. You look down on us, your police enacting justice on us, and when Jake Lang talked about Jesus, he was assaulted because you are not under American law, you are under Sharia law. That is the reason why you have made no arrest."

"The transit system is so important to Wayne County — to have a good, solid transit system," Evans said during an interview Saturday on the videocast/podcast Detroit in Black and White. "Macomb's overcome their obstacles. Oakland's overcome their obstacles, and we're still the ones sitting here trying to decide whether we should be in or whether we should be out."

Evans said even if some people choose not to use public transportation, it's important to their communities — to students, seniors, and hospital workers trying to get to work. He realizes there's resistance in some Wayne County communities that don't favor paying for public transportation.

"For the last 6, 8, 10 months, we've gone to every community in Wayne County, sat with the leadership in those communities, and asked them what they'd like to see the transit system do for their communities," he said.

Until this election, cities in the county could opt out of participating in the approximately 1-mill property tax for SMART bus funding. In 2024, state lawmakers in Lansing passed a bill prohibiting the county's communities from opting out.

In the past, 17 communities in the county opted out of the millage. The 26 other municipalities that are already in the SMART system wouldn't see an increase in their millage rate.

If approved, revenues would be distributed to Wayne County, SMART, DDOT and other community and regional transit providers. If the measure fails, communities served by SMART would lose those services. 

Evans said the millage would cost each household an average of about $8 a month.

"We want to call ourselves a region," he said, noting, "we're not a region until we act like one."

"I'll give her a D alright, and for this reason," Cox said of Whitmer during an appearance Wednesday night on the podcast/videocast, Detroit in Black and White. "We've grown the size of state government by $27 billion over the past seven years; so I ask any of you, what new programs or services have you gotten for that $27 billion?

"Nothing. In fact, the damn roads still haven't been fixed," he told the co-hosts Adolph Mongo, Vanessa Moss, Allan Lengel and Jim Nardone. 

Cox said he covets President Trump's endorsement, saying he'd be foolish not to. And he said this of his primary opponent John James: 

"John James is a good enough dude. But you know he kind of reminds me of what something Adolph Mongo's old boss Coleman Young once said...about Jesse Jackson: 'He ain't run nothing but his mouth.'"

Cox also expressed concern about education in Michigan, saying that a large chunk of the budget is dedicated to education, but the results are poor.

"I established a strong reputation here as the Detroit police chief," Craig told Adolph Mongo in a special edition of Detroit in Black and White on Friday. "People know me. They understood and watched me lead for eight years."

Craig said he also hopes voters don't put him "in a box" and only look at him as a Republican, though he's proud to be one.

He realizes the last Republican mayor of Detroit was Louis C. Miriani, who was first elected in the 1950s.

"I am most the qualified, the most caple, able and willing and ready, day one, to deliver (for) Detroit," she said.

Tinsley-Talabi is the founder of Mack Alive, a non-profit dedicated to the upward mobility of residents in Detroit, with a particular focus on Southeastern Village residents.

Jackson-Bolanos, 29, was acquitted by the Wayne County Circuit Court jury on charges of first-degree premeditated murder or second-degree murder. The jury deadlocked on the charges of felony murder and first-degree home invasion, and the judge subsequently dropped those charges, saying the factual allegations were similar to the counts Jackson-Balanos was acquitted of. 

Jackson-Bolanos was convicted of lying to investigators and was sentenced to 18 months to 15 years. He was given credit for 243 days served and is likely to be released by early next year.

Hollier, who appeared Thursday on the videocast/podcast of "Detroit in Black and White" (see show below), says most Michigan Congress members have a staff of 20 or so to serve constituents, but Thanedar only has a few dedicated to constituent services.

He accuses Thanedar of being more committed to getting re-elected and spending money promoting himself than on doing his job.

Thanedar responded Friday afternoon via email:

"Our office is typically staffed with 20 team members including 11 full-time staff, 1 part-time staff, 6 interns and 2 fellows. This staffing level has allowed us to address over 1400 constituent cases with 88% completion rate, and a response time of 24 to 48 hours.

"On the legislative front, 17 bills were sponsored in the first 15 months, two of which passed in the house and one signed by President Biden into law, over 300 bills co-sponsored, and we  communicated to over hundred thousand constituents on a regular basis.

"Additionally, following the 2020 redistricting in Michigan, (My) current district now includes areas previously served by Brenda Lawrence (40%), Debbie Dingell (26%), and Rashida Tlaib (34%). This restructuring led to considerable confusion among constituents, both within and outside our new boundaries. As a result, my office received calls from constituents of neighboring congresswomen and vice versa. To address this, we significantly ramped up our outreach efforts through various media. Which resulted in a quadrupling of constituent calls from January 2023 to January 2024."

"That literally killed us," McKinnon says during an interview Saturday on the videocast, "Detroit in Black and White," with host Adolph Mongo and co-hosts Vanessa Moss and Allan Lengel.

McKinnon, who was police chief from 1994-1998, was referring to officers who don't reside in the city, which he says has resulted in less ties and concern about Detroit and its neighborhoods. 

In 1999, the state, under Gov. John Engler, enacted a law prohibiting residency requirements for police officers and other municipal employees.

McKinnon, 79, also expresses skepticism about a recently announced 12-point safety plan to  address violence downtown, saying "it's not a new plan. They did it before, he said, acknowledging that it was not effective.

"I don't know how well this is going to work," he added. 

And he also talks about the need for more parental  responsiblity in the city to help curb crime and the racism he faced inside the department as a young officer.
