Remembering Max

Remembering Forest

In this episode Helena sits down with Elizabeth, Forest’s mum, to honour her son’s life and the path she has walked since his death. Forest was born early after a diagnosis that led to an interruption of pregnancy, an experience that reshaped Elizabeth’s understanding of connection, love, and what it means to mother a baby who is no longer physically here.

Elizabeth shares the music she listened to with Forest, she reflects on the profound realisations that emerged after his death, including how she now thinks about birthdays.

Today, Elizabeth volunteers with baby-loss organisations and leads creative support sessions for those navigating grief. She hosts individual and couples grief retreats in Northern Portugal, designed as restorative spaces for remembrance, grounding, and deep emotional processing.

Remembering Jordan

Yannique shares how she keeps Jordan close in her everyday life, from the ways she envisions who he would be today, to the precious moments spent visiting his resting place. She also reflects on how her family lovingly honour him, keeping his presence alive in their home and hearts.

Remembering Kayode

In this episode, Helena is joined by Wunmi, Kayode’s mama.

Wunmi tenderly shares the story of her son, Kayode, who was born on the 23rd of December 2023 a strong baby boy with the most beautiful, expressive eyes, just like his mama. From the moment he arrived, he showed strength and presence lifting his head with confidence, even in his first few weeks of life.

Wunmi speaks openly about her pregnancy journey, which was deeply impacted by hyperemesis gravidarum. She recalls funny moments like missing Beyoncé’s concert or the brain fog that comes with pregnancy.

She then shares the heartbreaking moments when Kayode’s health took a sudden turn. After developing sepsis, her concerns for her son were not taken seriously, and his condition deteriorated quickly. Wunmi and her family spent three emotional and sacred weeks at Acorns Children’s Hospice, where they eventually said "See you later" to their precious boy.

Through love and courage, Wunmi keeps Kayode’s name alive. This episode honours his life, his strength, and the everlasting bond between a mother and her son.

Sonia beautifully reminisces on the times she spent pregnant with her daughter, Autumn who was born on the 29th December 2023. Sonia, shares her journey into motherhood through IUI and using her spiritually to intentional help with her conception.

We learn about how Autumn's name was chosen, the Harry Potter storytimes with her dad and the heartbreaking day Sonia learnt about her departure.

Navigating Mother's Day

In this short but heartfelt episode, Helena and Chelsey reflect on the complexities of Mother’s Day for those grieving whether it’s the loss of a mother or the loss of a child. While both hosts feel a certain detachment from the day, they acknowledge the ways it can feel alienating, especially when the world seems to celebrate it so loudly.

Together, they think out loud about how Mother’s Day could be more inclusive, recognising those who feel like “half a mum” and those who would rather avoid it all together. Though neither of them fully connects with the day, they believe it’s because it’s impossible to ignore.

A little message is left for the Mother's with no Earthside babies, a side hardly spoken about but one that needs acknowledged. Mother's without Earthside children need 10x more attention.

Remembering Jesse

In this episode, Chelsey is joined by Jesse’s mama, Arrieanne. She lovingly reflects on the short but meaningful time she had with her son, Jesse, who tragically passed away two weeks after birth due to complications from PPROM causing his birth at 31 weeks. Jesse was Arrieanne's first boy she shares how she navigates her grief while being a mother to three living girls.

Arrieanne talks about the books she has written to help her children through their grief, giving them a way to process their emotions which something she also offers hospitals.

She speaks about the service she organised at her local church to support bereaved parents during Baby Loss Awareness Week. This service offers a safe space for parents to share and find support.

Arrieanne also recalls the emotional journey of losing Jesse, how her life is forever changed, the things that used to matter don't matter anymore.

Remembering William

In this episode William’s mum Thalia shares how on the night of the 14th November 2024 she started feeling cramps. As a first time mum she thought these were Braxton Hicks, however as they intensified she quickly realised she needed to go to the hospital.

On the 15th November, Thalia gave birth to her son who was sadly no longer breathing. In this episode, you'll hear the story beautiful of William's life in the womb. You'll hear the story of how his name was chosen, how he made his mama crave nothing but meat, how his parents nicknamed him Tamagachi at one point and how his dad would play the guitar to him.

Thalia also openly shares the heartbreaking moment of his loss, detailing the moment she arrived in the hospital and how quickly things tragically progressed.

Birthday Blues

In this episode, Helena and Chelsey reflect on the Christmas and New Year period, the ups and downs of navigating this emotionally draining "family time" while also passing through their babies’ birth days in between.

Helena shares how her family’s approach to remembering Maila took a massive U-turn, her dad is no longer hesitant to talk about his granddaughter, but now leads the conversation in honouring her. Helena also recounts her spa day in honour of Maila’s birthday.

Chelsey shares that she was pleasantly surprised upon receiving so many birthday cards for Eli, a reminder of how much he is loved and remembered all around. She also talks about her DIY touches for his celebration, from baking to crafting a space-themed backdrop.

Chelsey also briefs us on her new book, "Remembering Eli" launching on 22nd February.

Remembering Makenna

In this episode, Chelsey is joined by Katie, Makenna’s mum. Katie shares her heartfelt story, reflecting on her journey to parenthood and the cherished memories she holds of her daughter.

In the first part, Katie discusses challenges of becoming a mum, including the emotional weight of experiencing multiple baby losses. She shares how these experiences affected her bond during pregnancy. While recording Chelsey and Katie talk about the signs Katie's children send her.

In the second part, Katie recounts her daughter’s passing, reflecting on the difficulty of seeing her daughter in the NICU before she passed. Katie then explains the inspiring work of Rainbows for Makenna, something she created to continue to parent her daughter. She describes the organisation's retreats for grieving families and the meaningful tradition of sending Christmas cards to families worldwide, offering comfort and connection during the holiday season. Most importantly showing other parents that their baby is remembered by others too.

This episode is a powerful tribute to Makenna and a testament to Katie’s love, and dedication to supporting others through their grief journeys.

Griefmas

As Christmas approaches, Helena and Chelsey speak of what they are feeling as they apprehensively await the " family festive" season. They talk about the fact that not everyone appreciates Christmas and how much grief impacts the enjoyment of Christmas aka Griefmas.

Chelsey recounts her first Christmas without Eli who would have then been 2 weeks old. Helena talks about her worries for Christmases to come as Maila will be older and she won't get to see the progression of her daughter's reaction to opening Christmas presents. Both speak of the different ways they have found to include their babies during this time.

It is important to give yourself grace during this delicate time, listen to your inner voice if you want to observe Christmas do but don't feel like you must.

Remembering Dante

In this episode Helena is joined by Dante’s mama Gina Reeves. She fondly recalls the memories she has with her baby boy, Dante Rueben Theodore Reeves who was devastatingly stillborn at 25weeks. This episode is broken into three parts where Gina shares her work as part of the charity Ebony Bonds Support

She then speaks about how her Caribbean heritage played a big part in her relationship with Dante while he was in her tummy, from the Soca tunes to the Coucou and flying fish meals, the pregnancy symptoms that caused random flare ups, his resemblance to his father Peter and taking only Gina’s nose.

The third part of the episode Gina details what happened on the tragic day her son passed away and how the hospital failed in her care. Gina also recalls her difficult journey through parenthood and dealing with so much grief.

At the end of this episode Gina also suggests a very useful resource that helped her continue moving forwards in her grief journey.

Early Days of Grief
