“Listening” sounds gentle until you learn the Bible’s definition. Shema the Hebrew word often translated as “hear” carries a challenge: real hearing sinks in, forms understanding, and produces a response. That one idea can change how we practice Christian leadership, especially when we’re trying to hear God at work while leading teams, making decisions, or carrying responsibility at home and in our community.

I walk through Deuteronomy 6:4–5, the beginning of the Shema prayer, and share reflection questions that help you notice what happens when God speaks through Scripture, prayer, a sermon, a mentor, or even a dream. 

Then we widen the lens to Ahavah, the biblical picture of love as giving, loyalty, and faithfulness not just emotion. I bring it into the workplace with tangible examples like choosing not to gossip and using your influence to advocate for someone who isn’t in the room. Finally, we revisit Elijah’s journey across five key moments and symbols (brook, widow, fire, cave, succession) so you can locate your own leadership season and respond with courage.

A single “compliment” can split the room and the heart. When someone said a Black speaker was “well spoken for a Black man,” it wasn’t praise—it was a wound layered over years of unspoken injuries. We open that moment and use it to trace bigger fault lines inside churches — steeped in politicized DEI debates, and the heavy cost of being asked to teach, absorb, and forgive all at once. Alongside my friend, licensed professional counselor Britni Cannon, we dig into what these repeated cuts do to the body and the mind—and how a living faith can hold space for both hurt and hope.

We talk plainly about betrayal when people we’ve prayed with hold beliefs that harm our families, our kids’ opportunities, or our livelihoods. We name the economic pressure intensifying these divides—stalled salaries, rising costs, and the anxiety of caring for both children and aging parents. Britni offers mental health tools that are simple and humane: accept that two emotions can coexist, name what’s true in your body, and ground yourself before choosing your next move. From there, we push back on easy narratives about DEI, contrast fear with data on promotions and leadership, and challenge the myth of colorblindness by honoring culture, story, and the image of God in every person.

What emerges is a path that resists both denial and despair. We set boundaries around labor and education, refuse the role of spokesperson, and still choose compassion anchored in Scripture. Have you ever felt a heavy blanket of despair descend when tragedy strikes? That's exactly where I found myself after the murder of Charlie Kirk – not just grieving the event itself, but deeply troubled by how Christians were responding.

This vulnerable episode takes you through my personal journey of wrestling with faith during crisis. The question that kept surfacing was both challenging and necessary: "Where are the real Christians?" And more painfully, "Am I one of them?" Remaining in God revolutionizes how we understand our identity, purpose, and relationships. Drawing from John 15's powerful imagery, this episode unveils how our connection with Christ fundamentally transforms who we believe ourselves to be.

Pastor Amy Cedrone shares profound theological wisdom about our "daughterhood" and "siblinghood" in Christ, challenging us to reconsider how we approach diversity. "If we really live into our daughterhood," she explains, "we cannot then abandon the truth of our relationship with other believers." This vertical relationship with God necessarily shapes our horizontal relationships, making concepts like racism and classism spiritually incongruent with who we are in Christ.
