In the previous sermon, we looked at who Jesus is as God. He is God in the flesh, which means there's also a man nature in Jesus. He's actually truly/fully man, truly/fully God. So for this message, we're going to explore Jesus's man nature, which gives imperfect image bearers the PERFECT example to follow.

In our Image of God series, we've been delivered some pretty bad news. Sin was brought into the world and unfortunately it has only multiplied since its introduction. Image bearers now have no hope... at least not by their own power! God sent His Son Jesus to be God in the flesh to save humanity.

Pharaoh had been locked in a battle against Yahweh God (one that he would surely lose) but God is going to deliver the final blow. This final plague will be the worst one. What we see in these passages is that God blesses His people in the midst of the wicked's judgment.

Every once in awhile, we just need a good reset. Whether it's a reset of your room or just starting over on a project, it's occasionally necessary to keep focused. When we encounter discouraging obstacles, a reset is necessary. For Moses, God reset him after his obstacles with Pharaoh and the Israelites. You might need a spiritual reset in your walk with God after encountering discouraging obstacles. How will God reset you?

At the end of chapter 5, it seems as though Moses had an expectation for how his meeting with the Pharaoh should have gone. Maybe he expected instant success or at least for it to not have gone as awry as it did. He might have thought "this wasn't the plan!" He had discouraging obstacles in his way. The reality is that anything worth doing, especially your call from the Lord, WILL have obstacles. How will you respond? How can you trust God in those moments?

The more important the task, the more preparation is required. Anything important you do in your life, you need to do some prep work for. Moses knew that there were things needed to be done before he could tell the Israelites God's plan and demand Pharaoh let them go. What kind of prep work needs to be done for your call from God?

Up until this point of Jonah, we're not told what his motivation was for running. He finally obeyed in preaching to the Ninevites and they actually repented! That's wonderful news! This should have been a joyous occasion for Jonah.... but it wasn't. Why????

The subtitle to this sermon series is "And the God of Second Chances." We saw Jonah's second chance, but there's another second chance offered to the entire nation of Nineveh. This message focuses on the king of Nineveh and his response to Jonah's message of impending judgment if they don't repent. Even a believer in Christ can be reminded of the necessity and value of repentance. And certainly for the unbeliever, this passage presents a great template for repenting and believing in Christ.

The title of this message is a play off of the phrase "once learned, twice burned," or perhaps you know it as "once bitten, twice shy." Either way, it's a way of saying that you learned your lesson well. If you burned your hand on the stove once, you're now going to take twice as many precautions to ensure you don't do that again! 

Jonah did the same thing after being swallowed by the fish. He was burned by his disobedience and he will now be twice as diligent in obeying the Lord.

Have you ever been at "rock bottom?" It's never fun, but the beauty of it is it always gives us a chance to repent. That was the case for Jonah. In Jonah 2, Jonah gives us a model for repentance that we can use in our own lives when we're helpless.

In crime movies, when the bad guys are caught and the police are busting up their operation, they might say "the jig is up, boys." In other words, "we've been caught." When it comes to our own sin, we like to hide it and cover it up, but God will reveal our sin if it means accomplishing His will. 

In our passage, Jonah gets caught in his disobedience, his sin. Although none of us have been called to rise and go to Nineveh, we all have a command from the Lord that we're expected to obey.

Are you required to obey your parents? What about God? Surprisingly, the answer is both yes and no. Yes, you absolutely are required to. God doesn't give you an alternative, you're commanded to obey Him and your parents. Also no, you have a sense of independent will and you can refuse to serve the Lord and disobey your parents. It's not a wise choice, to say the least, and we'll see as we dive into the text that Jonah has begun to take the latter route himself!

Have you ever asked for a favor from someone that wasn't for you? As in, you went on someone else's behalf to ask for a favor. Using your own social capital to pull in a favor for someone else is a really good thing to do. But what happens when that person doesn't hear your request? Or maybe they forgot to do it? That's the worst!

Have you ever heard of what's called "narrative building?" It's kind of like when someone starts a rumor about you. They begin to 'build' a 'narrative' or a story about you that's either false or only half true and then it's professed as if it's completely true. It's one way that people can start drama with us and Jesus can identify with us in it. People did it all the time in His earthly ministry and they still do it today! They create a narrative about who He is that simply isn't true. So how do you know what narrative or testimony about Him is true?

We've heard from John already that we are to love one another, but now John is giving us some contrast between God's children and the devil's children (from last week). What does your mind go to when you think of the word "supreme?" Yeah, PIZZA! Even more than that, the word supreme is synonymous with "the best." If something is supreme, nothing can top it. Christ is supreme and the Apostle Paul with the Holy Spirit's guidance encourages us to rightly consider Him as such.

Paul prays for the church of Colossae and one of the big things he prays is that they would "walk in a manner worthy of the Lord." Thankfully, he expounds on what that means. God gives image bearers (us) what are called "communicable attributes." I think of these as "common gifts" that God bestows on everyone as something we share with God. God is creative, and we are creative. God likes to build, we like to build. God likes to communicate, we like to... you get the point! These can be used to give God tremendous glory! The people who built the Tower of Babel used these potentially great common gifts against God however. To find out more, get your Bible and tune in! 

Disclaimer: this passage brings forth the topic of alcohol use. Recognizing my precarious position of teaching youth, I wanted to balance my treatment on the topic carefully. Scripture never calls consumption alone sin, but I certainly don't want to encourage students to think of alcohol flippantly or guide them toward consuming. My desire in speaking on the matter is to warn them of the potential dangers without creating man made rules. Alcohol consumption is illegal for anyone under 21, making the immediate activity forbidden. For their future reference, I hope to equip your students with biblical decision making as it pertains to alcohol and any other weighty decision they will be faced with. 

If you are a middle school student, you might seek parental permission prior to listening simply because of the subject matter. 

Have you ever wondered what makes something valuable? Like, say, a sports card? Or how about human life? Who or what determines the value of life? Ultimately, it's the willingness of someone to pay for it that makes it what it's worth. To find out more about God's value on life, turn your Bible to Genesis 9 and tune in!

In Genesis 8, God "remembered" Noah and brought him and his family through the flood, just like He said He would. But does God remember things the way we do? Surely God wouldn't forget, so what does it mean for God to "remember" Noah? Grab your Bible, turn to Genesis 8, and tune in to find out!

How does a jeweler make diamonds look so good? He sets them against a dark background so their shininess stands out! It stands out because it's so vastly different from its background. As Christians, if we're walking with God, trusting and obeying Him, we'll do the exact same thing. Noah stood out among his generation. Open your Bible and tune in for more! 

Genesis 6:1-8 is one of the most perplexing passages in the entire Old Testament! Who are these "Nephilim?" Though I certainly discuss them, the more important thing is the contrast between how man and fallen angels see sin versus how God sees it. Our Bibles present a very clear difference! So I ask you, how's your vision?

Have you ever come across a genealogy in the Bible? You know, the part where it says "and so and so fathered so and so" and it's a long list of ancestry. Many people are tempted to skip these but there's a ton of value to them, even if it doesn't seem like it. 

Enoch was unique among Seth's lineage. He walked with God and because of that, his fate was different than his fathers and his sons. Why was this? How was he so different? Turn your Bibles to Genesis 5 and tune in for more!

Are you familiar with "empty calories?" Basically, things we eat that have no real value. They won't poison you, they just don't offer much for your body. I think in the same way, our minds and our hearts consume empty calories too. What's the fix? Grab your Bible and tune in to find out!

Adam and Eve sinned big time. Because of this, God promised that they would surely die. But praise be to God, they don't die immediately. In the midst of judgment and death, God is incredibly gracious to creation's first two people and first two sinners in history. Find out how God graciously gives life to Adam and Eve and to each of us by tuning in!

In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve are approached by a snake (Satan) who presents a major challenge to their understanding of God's word. How do they respond? How do we respond when we're faced with temptation? Open your Bible and tune in to find out!

Points of Clarity:

• In talking about the tree of knowledge of good and evil, I mentioned rejecting any notion that the tree was magical or mystical. In other words, any spiritual power the tree may have was God given, not found in the tree itself. If I communicated that the tree wasn't spiritual, that was not my intention. It certainly had spiritual significance and we'll see it in next week's message!

• I mentioned that a person will find themselves more able to glorify God in marriage than in singleness. This doesn't mean that a single person can't glorify God. In fact, God calls some to singleness and that is a wonderful gift to those who believe they're called to that (1 Cor. 7:7-8). My intention with the statement is simply that you're fulfilling God's commandment in creation by valuing and seeking marriage. Have full confidence that in being single (and too young to be married), you can glorify God tremendously with your life and glorify Him to the fullest right where you are. 

Everybody builds their life on some kind of foundation. There are all kinds of options, but are they all good options? Is there one that stands above the rest? Tune in to find out!

How often do we read the creation narrative and move on without really meditating on it? I'm guilty! In this message, we're going to slow it down  and look a little more closely at God's magnificence in creation and what it all means. Tune in for more! 

Do you enjoy seeing something that was broken get fixed? I love seeing old junky cars get completely remade. There's something so satisfying about seeing restoration in cars, houses.....people. The future is really hard to predict! We try all the time, but humans don't know much about the future. Revelation 19 and 20 give us some truths that we can guarantee will happen though. Christ will return and He will conquer Satan and all evil in the world. Tune in for more! 

The Holy Spirit inspires John to write about a scene with a beautiful, but deadly woman. She might look lovely, but she's deceptive and destructive! To find out more, tune in!

Have you ever barked up the wrong tree? You know, picked a fight you realized you can't win? Most everyone has done it, and the people on earth in the last days have really barked up the wrong tree by messing with God's people and God Himself! Tune in to find out more!

Everyone knows cheap imitations are not as good as the real thing. But cheap imitations exist for a reason. People eat imitation crab because it's cheaper and easier than the real thing. Satan loves offering up cheap imitations of God's blessings. And his lousy ripoffs are usually easier, look more fun, and seem to make us more happy. The two beasts in Revelation 13 are cheap imitation "saviors" who are leading the world astray. Tune in for more!

Edit: There's a point in the sermon where I contrast our church's teachings with the Roman Catholic Church's to illustrate a point. For clarity, I'm not making a declaration that the beasts in the last days will come from the Catholic Church. I'm simply emphasizing the difference in doctrine. 

Ever since Satan was thrown down from heaven, he's made war against God, His angels, and His children. Satan will stop at nothing to see that God's children fail. He's declared war on all of us, and he's far more powerful than we are. Thankfully if we're in Christ, He's our advocate to defend us against the wiles of our Enemy. Tune in to find out more! 

There has never been a day that Jesus didn't own and control the entire universe. But for a season of time, He allowed the wicked and ungodly to think they ruled the world. As we flip to Revelation 11, that's no longer the case, Jesus is commencing His full reign as the judgment upon the wicked continues. Tune in for more!

Every kid reaches an age where his or her parents begins trusting them with some big responsibilities. In Revelation 10, John is recommissioned to prophecy the message he's receiving. John is given a small scroll and told to eat it, tasting sweet but making his stomach bitter! What does this mean? How could something so sweet also be so bitter? Tune in to find out! 

I hated taking timed tests and hearing "time's up" was the worst! We all are taking a test so to speak called "life." Will we pass? Will we fail? Listen in and find out!

Asaph wonders why the wicked prosper and the righteous perish in Psalm 73, and this age old question continues to get asked today. Revelation 6 details God's judgment on the wicked and Revelation 7 shows the glory of a unified people in Christ worshiping and praising Him in eternity in Heaven. Christians may suffer on earth for a time, but all the suffering ends when we are before the throne worshiping together in the great multitude! Listen in for more!

James 5:12 tells us to not swear and not to take oaths, so does that mean that we can never make a solemn oath? Even when we get married or testify in court? Listen in to find out as one of our very own students brings us the word!

John looks around in Heaven for the one worthy of opening the scroll at God's right hand, and finds nobody. Just as he begins crying, his attention is directed to the Lamb who had the appearance of being slain. It's Jesus!!! Listen in for more!

When people think about what the world revolves around, they often think of money, power, fashion, or quite literally the sun. But the world and its entirety revolves around God. John sees this first hand in Revelation 4, as Jesus takes him to the throne room of God. This astounding picture of God the Father on His throne gives us every reason to behold His holiness, which leads us to desire holiness in response!

Jesus speaks directly to the 7 churches of Revelation in chapters 2 and 3, and He has specific words for all of them. But the two most faithful, He tells to be faithful and to hold fast. As believers in Christ, Jesus is calling us to do the same thing in trials and persecution. Whatever you do, be faithful and hold fast!

In chapter 1 of Revelation, John is instructed by Jesus to give 7 churches a message from Jesus Himself regarding impending persecution. Before He addresses the churches, He tells John to "fear not" and provides sound reasoning for why John has no reason to fear. For us as 21st century Christians, we can hold tightly to the same reasons when trials and persecution hits our own lives.
