Terri Collier set out to ride 10,000 miles in the Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge. But somewhere along the way, the ride became about much more than reaching the finish line.

In Part 2 of this MotorFemmes conversation, Kay and Terri dive into the purpose behind the miles: raising money to fight childhood hunger.

What began as a $10,000 fundraising goal grew into an extraordinary community effort. Terri ultimately raised $132,000—all while taking on one of the toughest motorcycle challenges of her life.

She shares the difficult days on the road, the breakdowns, brutal weather, exhaustion, wildlife encounters, and the moments when she had to remind herself why she was still riding.

And then there were two little children she met along the way—a brief encounter that gave Terri the strength to keep going and ultimately set something much bigger in motion.

Terri also talks about preparing for another Hoka Hey, the friendships forged through extreme riding, and what she wants other women to understand about motorcycles, confidence, and discovering what they're capable of.

Long before women riders were a common sight on the road, Cris Sommer Simmons was helping make sure their stories were seen, heard, and remembered.

In this episode of Motor Femmes, Kay sits down with pioneering motorcyclist, author, journalist and motorcycle historian Cris Sommer Simmons. From co-founding Harley Women magazine in 1985 to documenting the forgotten stories of early female riders in The American Motorcycle Girls: 1900–1950, Cris has spent decades celebrating women and their place in motorcycle history.

Cris shares how she fell in love with motorcycles as a child, bought her first Harley-Davidson at 19, helped create a motorcycle magazine when almost nothing existed specifically for women riders, and eventually traded modern motorcycles for the challenge of riding vintage machines.

We also hear about her unforgettable experience riding a 1915 Harley-Davidson named “Effie” in the Motorcycle Cannonball, learning to ride hand-shift and foot-clutch motorcycles, maintaining vintage bikes on the road, and discovering just how much endurance—and determination—it takes to cross the country on a century-old machine.

But Cris's story is about more than motorcycles. It's about preserving history, mentoring the next generation, supporting other women and leaving the ladder down for those coming behind us.

Her message to women is one worth remembering: motorcycling can build confidence, push us beyond what we think we're capable of, and remind us that sometimes we really can do the thing we thought we couldn't.

Meet Jazz!  She started riding at the tender age of 4 years old and the love for 2 wheels has always been a part of her life.  

For Jazz Rivera, motorcycles have been part of life almost from the beginning.

Growing up in New Mexico, Jazz was riding dirt bikes with her brother, racing BMX, and learning that if you ride it, you also need to know how to fix it. But the road from that motorcycle-loving kid to a factory-trained Harley-Davidson technician was anything but straight.

In this episode of MotorFemmes, Jazz shares her journey from serving in the U.S. Navy to rediscovering motorcycles after leaving the military, surviving a motorcycle accident, navigating a difficult divorce, and finding an unexpected opportunity to rebuild her life through Motorcycle Mechanics Institute.

Lynn Smith survived a motorcycle crash that should have left her bruised and sore. Instead, when her properly fitted full-face helmet came off during the accident, she suffered a skull fracture and traumatic brain injury that required months of recovery and cognitive therapy.

In this episode of MotorFemmes, Lynn shares what happened, what she learned about motorcycle helmet fit and chin-strap placement, and the questions she believes other riders—especially women—should consider when choosing a helmet.

But Lynn's story didn't end with the crash. After being cleared by her neurologist, she made the decision to get back on a motorcycle. Before long, she was doing track days, endurance racing and eventually earning her motorcycle racing license.

Aisha Lopez fell in love with motorcycles in her early 20s, but as she pursued higher education and a professional career, she began to believe that being a successful woman and riding a sport bike simply didn't belong together. So she sold her motorcycle and walked away from something that had given her freedom, independence and joy.

Jennifer Black is a nurse, wife, mother, grandmother—and a woman who puts about 60,000 miles a year on her motorcycles.

She started riding only a few years ago on a Sportster 1200 before moving up to a Street Glide Special. Today, she's tackling long-distance trips, mountain roads and some of the best motorcycle routes in the country.

Sharon Haney had wanted to ride her own motorcycle for years. As she approached 50, she decided it was finally time to stop riding on the back and take control of her own bike.

But learning didn't go exactly as planned.

Sharon started with a motorcycle that was too big and top-heavy for her five-foot frame. She dropped it more than once, then crashed after getting caught in a heavy rainstorm. Although she got back on quickly, something unexpected happened a few rides later: the fear arrived.
Instead of giving up, Sharon gave herself permission to slow down. She healed, moved to a smaller motorcycle, took additional rider training and rebuilt her confidence one driveway, one neighborhood and one ride at a time. The first time she made it around her neighborhood again, she cried.

In this episode of MotorFemmes, Sharon talks candidly about choosing the right motorcycle, overcoming fear after a crash, wearing protective gear, continuing rider education and learning to ride at your own pace.

Long before women riding motorcycles became commonplace, a handful of fearless women were challenging expectations, crossing continents and proving that adventure had no gender.

Kay knew she wanted to ride her own motorcycle. There was just one problem: she didn't actually know how to ride one yet.

Her first attempt involved an old Suzuki that was so tall she had to use the curb just to get on and off. Then came her first Harley-Davidson Sportster—and a lesson she would never forget.

Too impatient to wait for her motorcycle safety course, Kay headed out with friends. At the first turn, she discovered one rather important skill she'd never learned: how to turn. The ride ended in the trees with a broken collarbone and an entire riding season lost.

But it didn't end her motorcycle story.

The following spring, Kay completed her rider training, earned her license and began a relationship with motorcycles that has lasted for decades.

In Part 2 of her MotorFemmes story, Kay introduces the three motorcycles she loves today—Pearl, her 1982 Low Rider; Ruby, her 2005 Road King; and Minnie, her 2019 Softail Slim—and shares the stories behind each one.

Before MotorFemmes, before riding her own motorcycle, and before the freedom of being in control of the handlebars, Kay was a passenger.

She had loved motorcycles since childhood and discovered early how different the world felt from two wheels—the smells, the scenery, the open air and the incredible sense of freedom. But growing up in a traditional Italian family, becoming a female motorcycle rider wasn't exactly part of the plan.

Then one frightening ride changed everything.

Stranded miles from home with a rider she no longer trusted, Kathleen realized just how vulnerable being a passenger could make her. On the dangerous ride home, she made herself a promise: if she got home safely, someday she would take control for herself.

In this personal episode of MotorFemmes, Kathleen shares the story behind her decision to move from the passenger seat to the handlebars—and the beginning of her journey toward becoming a solo woman motorcycle rider.
