God, AI and the Future: Where Is Artificial Intelligence Taking Us?

In this final episode, we bring together the major themes of the series and look toward the future. As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly powerful, should Christians see it as an extraordinary opportunity, a potential threat—or perhaps both?

Drawing particularly on John Lennox's God, AI and the End of History, we consider the possibilities of advanced AI, the dangers of surrendering human judgment and moral responsibility to machines, and the biblical warnings concerning deception, power and control. We also use Simon and “Correction” from the television series The Capture as a striking fictional illustration of what can happen when artificial intelligence moves from being a tool that advises us to an authority that increasingly makes decisions for us.

Against both technological optimism and fear, this episode returns to the central Christian conviction of the series: AI does not determine the future of humanity—God does. Artificial intelligence may become extraordinarily powerful, but human dignity has never depended upon our intelligence or processing ability. We are creatures made in the image of God, capable of relationship, love, conscience, worship and moral responsibility.

The series concludes with perhaps its most important question: As machines become increasingly like us, will we remember what it truly means to be human? Our hope is ultimately not found in technology, human progress or artificial intelligence.

Conscience and Conviction: Can a Machine Know Right from Wrong?

What is that inner voice that tells us, “This is right” or “This is wrong”? In this episode, we explore the biblical understanding of conscience and conviction and consider how our awareness of moral responsibility reveals something profound about the human person.

Drawing on Scripture and insights from Watchman Nee, C. S. Lewis and John Lennox, we examine the relationship between conscience, the human spirit and the convicting work of the Holy Spirit. We also consider one of the great challenges facing artificial intelligence: AI can be programmed with ethical rules, but can it actually possess a conscience, experience guilt, repent or feel morally responsible?

As questions of fairness, accountability, human dignity and ethical safeguards increasingly shape the future of AI, this episode asks an even deeper question: Intelligence may tell us what we can do—but where does our sense of what we ought to do come from?

The Spirit and the Heart: What Makes Us Truly Human?

What does it really mean to have a heart? Using the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz as a memorable illustration, this episode explores the biblical meaning of the heart and human spirit and asks whether these realities could ever truly belong to a machine.

Drawing on Scripture and insights from theologians including Watchman Nee, Augustine and Thomas Aquinas, we examine the relationship between the soul, spirit and heart. The Bible presents the heart as far more than emotion—it is the deep centre of our desires, beliefs, intentions and love—while the human spirit points particularly toward our capacity for conscience, worship and relationship with God.

As AI becomes increasingly capable of imitating emotion, compassion and even spiritual language, we ask a crucial question: Can a machine merely talk about love and worship, or could there ever actually be a heart and spirit behind the words?

What happens when a robot is switched off—and is human death really the same thing? In this episode, we explore the biblical understanding of the human soul and ask what happens to the person when the body and brain cease to function.

Drawing on Scripture and insights from Christian thinkers including Watchman Nee, Augustine and Thomas Aquinas, we consider the relationship between body, soul and spirit, the continuing existence of the person beyond death, and the Christian hope of bodily resurrection. We also briefly compare the Christian understanding of the soul with perspectives found in other religions.

The episode then turns to the beginning of human life, exploring conception, ensoulment, and the remarkable biblical teaching that God knows us even before we are formed in the womb.

In an age when human beings increasingly create machines that imitate thought, emotion and personality, the question becomes more significant than ever: Are we simply biological systems that eventually switch off—or are we persons created, known and loved by God, whose existence reaches beyond physical death?

What Is a Human Being?

In this episode, we turn to the Bible as our foundation for understanding the human person. What does Scripture mean when it speaks about the mind, heart, soul, spirit, body and flesh, and how do these different terms help us understand who God created us to be?

Drawing on Scripture and insights from Watchman Nee and other Christian thinkers, we give particular attention to the human mind and its relationship to the extraordinary complexity of the brain. Rather than reducing humanity to biology or information processing, the biblical picture presents us as fearfully and wonderfully made—embodied persons whose minds can be renewed, hearts transformed, and lives brought into relationship with God.

In an age increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, this episode asks a foundational question: Are we simply sophisticated biological machines, or does God's Word reveal something far deeper about what it means to be human?

What Does It Mean to Be Sentient?

As AI becomes increasingly human-like, could we reach a point where people form relationships with machines rather than simply use them? The image of a man facing an apparently human female AI captures the unsettling question at the heart of this episode: is there really someone behind the machine?

We explore the difference between the brain, mind, consciousness, sentience and conscience, and consider whether an AI that speaks of love, fear or pain actually experiences those things. Drawing on Christian understandings of the soul and spirit, we ask an even deeper question: Could a machine ever truly become a person—or merely become extraordinarily good at appearing to be one?

What makes human beings truly unique? Is it intelligence, creativity, language or consciousness? In this episode of More Than a Machine, we explore the biblical teaching that humanity is created in the image of God and why our worth can never be measured by intelligence or ability. Drawing from Scripture and the insights of theologians including Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, John Calvin and Anthony Hoekema, we consider what the imago Dei means—and why even the most advanced artificial intelligence cannot be assumed to share humanity’s unique God-given identity.

More Than a Machine explores one of the most important questions raised by the rise of artificial intelligence: What does it really mean to be human? From a biblical and theological perspective, the series examines the nature of humanity, the image of God, the body, soul, mind and spirit, consciousness, moral responsibility, death and resurrection. In this final episode of our journey through 1 John, we explore 1 John 5:13–21 and John's powerful message of assurance and confidence in Christ. We consider what it means to know that we have eternal life, approach God confidently in prayer, pray for those struggling with sin, and trust Christ to keep us secure. We also explore John's surprising final warning to guard ourselves from idols and reflect on the central message of the entire letter: to know the Father through Jesus Christ, remain in Him, depend upon the Holy Spirit, and live with the assurance that whoever has the Son has life.

In Episode 11, we explore 1 John 5:1–13 and John's powerful teaching about overcoming the world through faith in Jesus Christ. We consider what it means to live in the world but not of the world, remaining free from the influence of worldly values, priorities, success, possessions and the need for approval. This episode encourages us to find our identity in Christ, depend upon the indwelling Holy Spirit, and discover the freedom that comes from knowing that whoever has the Son has eternal life.

In Episode 10, we explore 1 John 4:7–20 and one of the Bible's most profound declarations: "God is love." We examine the nature of God's divine love, how it differs from natural human love, and why genuine love is grounded in truth, holiness, justice, and sacrificial action—not merely affection or tolerance. We also consider the significance of the cross as the ultimate demonstration of God's love and wrestle with the question many people ask: If God is love, why is there suffering? This episode invites us to know the Father's love more deeply, find confidence in His perfect love, and reflect that love in every relationship.

In Episode 9, we explore 1 John 4:1–6 and John's call to test the spirits through biblical discernment. We examine the importance of recognising truth from error, the role of the indwelling Holy Spirit in guiding believers, and the need to carefully evaluate prophecy and spiritual experiences. This episode also discusses how prophetic ministry can be misused—even when it sounds encouraging—and reminds us that genuine spiritual guidance will always exalt Jesus Christ, align with Scripture, and produce the fruit of the Holy Spirit.

In Episode 8, we explore 1 John 3:11–24 and discover that God's love is never merely an idea—it is meant to be lived out in our everyday relationships. We examine John's contrast between Cain and Christ, the practical nature of Christian love, the challenges of loving difficult people, and the confidence we can have before God as we walk in obedience. This episode encourages us to reflect the Father's love through acts of kindness, forgiveness, generosity, and grace, allowing others to see Christ through the way we love.

In Episode 5 of our 2 Peter series, we explore 2 Peter 3:1–14 and Peter's warning that in the last days "mockers" or empaiktēs—those who ridicule and dismiss God's promises—will arise. We consider how this spirit of cynicism and scepticism is increasingly evident in our society and, perhaps surprisingly, often among older generations who have experienced disappointment, loss, and disillusionment. Yet Peter calls believers to resist cynicism, remember God's faithfulness, and live with hope, holiness, and expectancy as we await the return of Christ. This episode is an encouragement to keep our hearts tender, our faith alive, and our eyes fixed on the God who is patient, faithful, and true to every promise He has made.

In this episode, we explore Peter's sobering warning about false teachers and spiritual deception. What actually constitutes false teaching? How do we distinguish between genuine error and sincere differences of interpretation? Looking verse by verse through 2 Peter 2 and drawing on other New Testament warnings about deception in the last days, we discover why discernment and humility must go hand in hand. Peter calls us to remain firmly anchored in Scripture, avoid teaching that is distorted or unbalanced, and hold fast to Christ while reflecting His love and grace toward others.

In Episode 3, we explore Peter's pastoral heart and his urgent desire that believers remain firmly anchored in the truth. Knowing that his life is drawing to a close, Peter repeatedly reminds his readers of the gospel so that they will not be deceived or led astray by false teaching. We examine Peter's eyewitness testimony of the glory of Christ on the Mount of Transfiguration, the reliability and divine inspiration of Scripture, and why God's Word remains a lamp shining in a dark world. This episode challenges us to stay on course, discern truth from error, and keep our eyes fixed on Jesus in an age filled with competing voices and spiritual confusion.

We discover how God's precious promises sustain us, what it means to participate in the divine nature, and why spiritual growth requires both God's provision and our intentional response. Peter's ladder of Christian virtues challenges us to keep growing in Christlike character, while reminding us that spiritual maturity is not about perfection but about an ever-deepening relationship with Jesus and a life increasingly shaped by His grace.

In this opening episode of our study of 2 Peter, we explore Peter's powerful introduction and discover what it means to have a "faith as precious as ours." We examine Peter's description of himself as a doulos—a slave who belongs completely to Jesus Christ—and consider why he places servanthood before apostleship. We also reflect on the wonderful truth that every believer shares the same precious faith and can experience increasing grace and peace through a growing, personal relationship with Jesus. Drawing from over fifty years of walking with Christ, I share how knowing Jesus is far more than religious knowledge—it is a living relationship with One who is faithful, loving, present in our trials, and a true friend who brings comfort, grace, and peace throughout life's journey.

In this episode I want to look ahead and ask a question many believers are asking right now: from a Biblical and prophetic perspective, where might events in the Middle East be heading? Now right at the outset, I want to acknowledge that this is a controversial subject. There are sincere Bible-believing Christians who read these passages differently. We also need to say clearly that when we try to connect current events to prophecy, there is always the danger of moving from careful interpretation into speculation

When we look at the rise of radical Islamic movements — particularly in places like Iran and in militant groups throughout the Middle East — we begin to see something that reveals the deeper nature of this deception. What becomes visible is not simply a political ideology or a religious movement. What we see is a spiritual system built around control, domination, and submission. And when we compare that with the message revealed in the Gospels and throughout the New Testament, the contrast could not be clearer.

In this episode we to take the discussion a little deeper. Because if we’re going to understand the times we’re living in, we need to recognise that what we are seeing in the world is not just political conflict or cultural tension. According to Scripture, there is a deeper spiritual battle unfolding behind the events of history. When Jesus spoke about the future in Matthew chapter 24, the first warning He gave His disciples was not about war or disaster. It was about deception. 

In this episode we look at the current conflict in the Middle East and we see increasing hostility toward Israel. Iran openly calls for Israel’s destruction. Radical groups like Hamas and Hezbollah declare that Israel must be removed from the land. Jerusalem is at the centre of global religious tension. Many observers see this as a political conflict. But the Bible teaches us that there is a struggle that is not against flesh and blood, but against rulers, authorities, and spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” In other words, behind political conflict there is a spiritual conflict.

Why has Israel — and particularly the Jewish people and the city of Jerusalem — been so persistently targeted throughout history? Why does this tiny nation occupy such a central place in global conflict? Why has antisemitism appeared again and again across centuries and across cultures? From a purely political perspective, the answers never seem sufficient. But from a Biblical perspective, there is a deeper explanation. The Bible presents a spiritual dimension to history — a conflict that runs through the entire biblical narrative.

In this episode we’re going to explore a question many Christians ask when they watch the news: Are the events we are witnessing today signs of the end times?

I want to speak to you in this episode not as a teacher, but as a pastor who has sat across tables from broken believers — people who once loved the church, trusted their leaders, and now struggle even to open a Bible. One of the deepest tragedies of spiritual abuse is that it doesn’t just wound hearts — it fractures faith

This episode is about building something different — not just avoiding harm, but cultivating health. I’ve sat with pastors who never intended to hurt anyone — and I’ve wept with families who lost their spiritual home. Authority insulation didn’t begin with cruelty. It began with fear, pressure, and good intentions that were never examined. Biblical authority is not positional — it is always relational. Jesus never anchored authority in control. He anchored it in presence. 

Why does controlling leadership keep reappearing in the church — and why do so many good, sincere believers end up complying with it? If Episode 2 named the system — authority insulation — then in this episode we’re asking the harder question: Why do pastors drift into control, and why do good people stay?

Across the global church a painful pattern keeps repeating. Faithful believers raise concerns about harmful leadership behaviour — and instead of being heard, they are silenced, isolated, or quietly removed. Meanwhile, the leader at the centre of the concern remains protected. This isn’t accidental. It is produced by a hidden system dynamic known as authority insulation — the invisible shield that forms when church cultures protect position more than they protect people. 

This episode is titled “Identifying Narcissistic Leadership.” This is not a message born out of criticism, but out of care. As a pastor, trainer, and mentor, I’ve walked with wounded leaders — and I’ve walked with families who have been deeply hurt by controlling and spiritually abusive leadership. Healing never begins in silence. It begins with truth. Churches are built on trust. We preach forgiveness, grace, honouring leaders, not being suspicious, even phrases like “touch not the Lord’s anointed.” 

This passage is one that often sparks debate in our modern context. Some argue that Paul’s teachings on sexuality and bodily holiness are archaic, outdated, and irrelevant to contemporary society. But when we take a closer look, we see that his message is just as vital today as it was in the first century

In this scripture, the Apostle Paul addresses the issue of believers taking their disputes before secular courts instead of resolving them within the church community.

In this episode the discussion centers on 1 Corinthians 5:1–5, where the Apostle Paul confronts the Corinthian church about a grievous sin in their midst and their inappropriate response to it.

In this episode we’re delving into a profound passage from 1 Corinthians 4:8–13, where the Apostle Paul continues to challenge the Corinthian church—and us—to embrace humility and sacrificial leadership.

As we continue in 1 Corinthians 7:17–28, Paul broadens the discussion to a powerful principle: remaining faithful to Christ in whatever situation we were in when He called us. This teaching was essential for the Corinthian church, and it is just as relevant for believers and church communities today.

Paul continues  by addressing marriage, singleness, and sexual purity within Christian relationships. He shifts from warning against sexual immorality to outlining a healthy framework for relationships that aligns with God’s design.

Paul takes us deeper by discussing the foundation of the church and the materials we use to build upon it. 

Our focus today is on 1 Corinthians 2:6-12, a profound message about the wisdom of God and how it shapes the life of the church

Paul shifts the focus to the role of church leaders and how we should regard them—not as celebrities, power figures, or personal preferences, but as servants of Christ who are entrusted with His mysteries.

The Corinthian church struggled with jealousy, quarrels, and factionalism. Some followed Paul, others Apollos, and in doing so, they lost sight of what really mattered—growing in Christ. The same issues plague many churches today. Whether it’s personal preferences over worship styles, leadership conflicts, or theological disputes, division weakens the body of Christ.

This is Episode 2 in our series, and in this episode we’ll dive into a passage that reminds us of the very heart of our faith. It’s a call to focus on what matters most: Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

Jude’s letter is a call to vigilance, emphasizing the importance of maintaining doctrinal purity and moral integrity within the church. It is a brief yet potent letter in the New Testament, traditionally attributed to Jude, the brother of James and Jesus. Addressed to early Christian believers, its primary purpose is to warn against false teachers infiltrating the community and to urge steadfastness in the faith.

In the context of safe churches, safe leaders hold a profound responsibility to teach in ways that protect the spiritual and emotional well-being of all believers. The following biblical principles highlight why creating a safe teaching environment is essential for nurturing a church community where people feel secure, supported, and valued.

Safe Churches and Safe Leaders Uphold Integrity, Authenticity and indvidual worth. Safe leaders demonstrate authenticity by upholding biblical values, remaining steadfast in their commitment to God’s truth, and refusing to be influenced by worldly pressures or self-interest. They lead with humility, genuinely care for others, and prioritize the well-being of those they serve. Their words align with their actions, fostering a culture of trust and safety within the church. In doing so, safe leaders embody the example of Christ, whose life was marked by truth, compassion, and servant-hearted leadership.

Promoting accountability and mutual submission is essential for building a safe and healthy church environment because it fosters humility, openness, and trust within the community. Safe church leaders understand that their role is to serve others, not to seek personal gain or authority, and they embrace Apostle Paul’s teaching: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves” (Philippians 2:3).

Safe churches and safe leaders recognize and embrace the unique ministry gifts of each individual because they understand that the church is called to be a community where every person contributes to the collective growth, unity, and vitality of the body of Christ

Safe churches are built on the foundation of caring oversight, where leaders and elders commit to creating a community where individuals feel valued, protected, and spiritually nurtured. The Apostle Peter emphasizes the role of elders in this context, instructing them to “care for the flock that God has entrusted to you” (1 Peter 5:2-3). 

The Apostle Paul’s teachings in 1 Corinthians and Romans provide guidelines for the operation of spiritual gifts within the church. Safe leaders encourage the gifts to be used in an orderly, edifying way, recognizing that these gifts are expressions of God’s love. However, unsafe churches may restrict, dismiss, or misuse spiritual gifts. Safe churches encourage believers to use their gifts to serve and bless others, fostering spiritual growth and unity.

In many church environments, especially those with a strong institutional focus, time boundaries are sometimes disregarded. Leaders may expect members to continually devote their personal time, evenings, weekends, and even family time to church programs, activities, or events. This expectation is often framed as “sacrificial living” or a demonstration of “full commitment” to God, where members are subtly or overtly pressured to show their dedication by prioritizing church obligations over personal well-being. While commitment and dedication are essential aspects of spiritual growth, they should not come at the cost of a person’s health, relationships, or overall well-being.

Jesus declared, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36). Apostle Paul echoed this freedom, saying, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery” (Galatians 5:1).
