John’s Gospel doesn’t start with a manger or a genealogy. It starts before time, with a bold claim: Jesus is the Word, Jesus is God, and Jesus is the One through whom everything was made. Around the table, we read John 1 out loud and let it challenge the “small” versions of Jesus we’re tempted to settle for, replacing them with a Savior who is Creator, Light in the darkness, and the clearest picture of the Father’s heart.

We also slow down at the personal turning point in John 1: those who receive Jesus and believe in his name are given the right to become children of God. That isn’t just religious language to us, it’s an open door to salvation, adoption, and a new identity. We pray for listeners who don’t yet know Jesus to receive him, and we ask the Holy Spirit to make the Word feel real, near, and alive.
