On this episode, Sarah Marsh Janish welcomes back colleague Dr. Sara Rosenberg, a UCANR Farm Advisor for Mariposa, Merced and Stanislaus counties, to discuss a recent paper she has published. Dr. Rosenberg recently published a paper about part of her dissertation work, the first study to assess soil health and agronomic outcomes in diversified and continuous rice systems in California. This journal article is called "Benefits and tradeoffs of diversifying rice-based cropping systems: Impacts on soil health, productivity, and agroecosystem multifunctionality" and was published in volume 391 of Agriculture, Ecosystems, and Environment. The conversation focused in on one aspect of this fascinating work: how crop rotation in rice systems affects soil microbial communities.

Sarah Marsh Janish sits down with Mia Avila and Oscar Deleon, Jr., who spent summer 2025 with the UCCE Rice Team as part of Chico STEM Connections Collaborative, a collaborative undergraduate research experience at California State University Chico. CSC² is an innovative program working in collaboration with other California State Universities throughout the state to coordinate and integrate project data into one of the largest and most comprehensive evaluations of best practices found in the nation. CSC² serves educationally disadvantaged students and, to the extent possible by law, emphasizes participation by students from groups with low eligibility rates for four-year institutions.

Mia and Oscar, as members of this collective, spent their summer working on various research projects with the UCCE Rice Team, as well as performing their own supervised rice research throughout the summer.

Mia Avila Bio: My name is Mia Avila, I’m a 4th year undergraduate student at CSU Chico studying Plant & Soil Science, and I’ve grown up in the north state all my life.

Oscar Deleon Bio: My name is Oscar Deleon Jr., and I’m a second-year Plant & Soil Science major at CSU Chico. I transferred here from the Coachella Valley, specifically Indio, and I’m passionate about anything agriculture-related.

We're doing a rerun episode today: Luis Espino and Sarah Marsh will be talking about Rice Armyworm Monitoring Program and the second generation of armyworms in rice. We're using this episode as the second peak of armyworms is approaching quickly!

Two true armyworm generations occur in rice; moths fly in spring and early summer, laying eggs in rice fields and surrounding vegetation. The larvae that emerge feed on rice foliage. A second moth flight occurs in mid-summer, followed by larvae feeding on rice foliage and panicles.

In honor of National Invasive Species Awareness Week, Sarah Marsh Janish discusses the recent focus on nutria in California. Although this semi-aquatic mammal is not new to California, the surge in population and range across the state is of some concern, especially to those of us who work in the habitats they prefer to inhabit.

Sarah Marsh Janish and Luis Espino discussed the 2024 Rice Disease Survey, the results of which showed a low incidence of blast and similar levels of other diseases compared to previous years. The conversation also covered the influence of agronomic practices on diseases in rice crops, the importance of fungicide applications, and the differences in diseases and insect problems between California rice and the mid-south region.

Sarah Marsh Janish sat down with Tim Johnson, the President & CEO of the California Rice Commission, also known as the CRC. The CRC makes it their mission to support the family farmers and mills who have excelled for more than a century. This support looks like engaging in a number of comprehensive regulatory programs such as managing water quality programs, maintaining an active industry communications program, and coordinating wildlife habitat conservation programs.

Sarah and Tim discussed the role and mission of the California Rice Commission, its history, and its efforts to manage water quality, habitat conservation, and industry communications. They also explored the environmental impact of rice farming, the importance of rice fields for waterfowl habitat and shorebirds, and the potential for rice fields to contribute to the recovery of salmon runs. The conversation ended with a discussion on the California Rice Commission's role in promoting rice farming, its partnerships with organizations, and its focus on collaboration and resource efficiency.

In this episode, Sarah and Jens Beets, a research ecologist with the USDA's Invasive Species and Pollinator Health unit, discussed the challenges of managing algae and cyanobacteria in California rice production, including the impact of excess nutrients and the potential risks associated with rice cultivation. They also explored various strategies to prevent and control algae growth, including the use of nitrogen and phosphorus, water movement, and herbicides, as well as the challenges of managing aquatic weeds.

Herbicide resistance is continually quoted as a primary concern among rice producers and researchers. Due to a myriad of reasons, there are very few chemistries available for weed control in CA rice; among these, herbicide resistance has been reported in all but the most recent.

Weedy rice is the same species as cultivated rice, Oryza sativa, which contributes to the difficulty in controlling it; any herbicide that would kill weedy rice would also hurt the crop. Weedy traits of weedy rice including seed shattering and long dormancy. What that means is that the seeds fall off the panicle really easily and can remain dormant in the soil seedbank for years before germinating.

Today Luis Espino and Sarah Marsh will be talking about Rice Armyworm Monitoring Program and the second generation of armyworms in rice. 

Two true armyworm generations occur in rice; moths fly in spring and early summer, laying eggs in rice fields and surrounding vegetation. The larvae that emerge feed on rice foliage. A second moth flight occurs in mid-summer, followed by larvae feeding on rice foliage and panicles.
