Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that 11.2% of adults aged 18 years and over report regular feelings of worry, nervousness, or anxiety (Clark et al. 2019). To effectively assess and address turnover in ABA workplace settings, additional research is needed that goes beyond the surface, exploring the ways in which work environments may serve as a source of trauma for staff in ABA settings. Mental disorders are often diagnosed in young adulthood, and research states the adolescent brain, specifically, the prefrontal cortex is not fully developed until as late as 25 years old (Arain, 2013). Although age is not a demographic reported by the BACB, anecdotal reports suggest many RBTs, BCaBAs, practicum students, and new BCBAs fall within this late adolescent stage, as entry-level and early career professionals. It is incumbent upon supervisors to understand the role of trauma and the impact of Adverse Child Experiences (ACEs), among other life experiences, on mental and physical health, considering the high rates of mental health concerns among adult populations. In this presentation, attendees will explore resources, including Mental Health First Aid certification, help supervisors identify and intervene with supervisees while staying within their scope of competence. Attendees will identify ways to mitigate potential triggers in the workplace to create psychologically safe environments for supervisees. Attendees will also discuss the impact of culturally responsive trauma-informed supervision on client outcomes in ABA settings. The presenter will share relevant research, in addition to personal narratives from the presenter’s lived experiences.

This week we will be taking a break as we work to increase our archive of episodes, but we have a lot of exiting things happening! We will be continuing our University Series with a wide array of schools. We have an entire year of Thought Leaders lined up - including Dr. Denise Ross, Dr. Kent Johnson, Dr. Shahla Ala’i, and Dr. Sigrid Glenn. We will be continuing our series on how to find a job outside of the clinical world and the skills that may be needed for some of those jobs.

We will be welcoming a NEW series called The Lift with Dr. Linda LeBlanc and Dr. Tyra Sellers. And, we will be starting to offer Continuing Education for select episodes. Stay tuned as we are back next week with an episode on jobs in Leadership & Culture within the business setting.

Thought Leaders 013 - Founder & President Jose Martinez-Diaz

It is with profound sadness that we share the loss of our beloved founder, mentor, colleague, and friend Dr. Jose Martinez-Diaz who passed away on Monday, September 21 from complications related to an ongoing battle with diabetes. He passed peacefully, listening to Bob Dylan and holding the hand of his wife of 34 years, Danette.

Through his extraordinary dedication to teaching and disseminating Applied Behavior Analysis—always with a deep sense of humanity and respect for others' dignity—he touched the lives of thousands of individuals across the globe, and he will be dearly missed.

For now, please respect the privacy of his family and colleagues as we mourn this deep loss. We will soon be sharing details about planned memorial services and possible other means through which friends and professional associates may show their respect and appreciation for this formidable man.

Worry. Sadness. Grief. Overwhelmed. Isolated. Confused. Anger. Anxiety.

These are just a handful of emotions I have heard (or felt) first-hand and read on social media within the last two weeks. As humans, and in a world of social media and anonymity, emotions can be expressed all too easily. Let's face it, EMPATHY is HARD, but a necessary skill to practice on a daily basis.
