One of the reasons I became interested in Biblical and Qur'anic figures is because I did my dissertation and initial research on the medieval Ibn Kathir (d. 774/1373) and Ibn Taymiyya (d. 728/1328). Both Ibn Kathir and Ibn Taymiyya engaged the Arabic Bible and wrote on Biblical literature and its relationship to the Qur'an. These figures today would be understood as "salafis". But what does that mean? I sit down with Yasir Qadhi to discuss the meaning of "salafism", his relationship to the movement, and the potential for a more inclusive Islam.

Maryam's Fast - Silence, Spirituality and Miracles (Throwback)

While most Muslims understand the word "fasting" as abstaining from food and drink, the word "fasting" is used in the Chapter of Maryam in reference silence. The use of the word in the Story allows us to better understanding "fasting" as abstaining from something for a greater spiritual benefit and higher good.

David and Bathsheba

David/Dawud is represented in the Islamic tradition as a righteous ruler who combines worship and kingship, piety and authority. One story that emerges in the Biblical and Qur'anic literature is that David/Dawud sees Bathsheba bathing, leading him to have an affair with her, kill her husband and then marrying her. Various Muslim commentators struggled with this story, with some saying that he only had relations with her after marriage and with others rejecting the story altogether.

Solomon and the Ant

One of the most fascinating stories in the Qur'an is the Story of Solomon/Sulyaman and the ant. An ant see Solomon/Sulyman's army approaching and warns her tribe to take shelter to protect themselves. Solomon/Sulayman hears the ants cry which leads him to pray for God to make him grateful and live a righteous life. The story speaks to the idea of humility, gratitude and conservation.

The Call - Verse 3 and 4 of the Chapter of Mary (Surat Maryam) (Throwback)

My father passed away this week so I reshare an older episode of Zechariah/Zakariyya who resembled my father in his age, spirituality and caretaking.

Verse 3 and 4 of the chapter of Mary (surat Maryam) captures about the private call of Zechariah/Zakariyya as he prays to have a child. Before he makes his please, he speaks about his weakness - his brittle bones and white hair - and emphasizes his unique relationship with God. Zechariah's/Zakariyya's call is similar to other calls of vulnerability in the Qur'an, such as that of Jonah/Yunus.

Adam's Connection to Maryam

The Lament - Verse 23 in the Chapter of Mary (Surat Maryam) (Throwback)

In the climax of the story, Maryam makes a remarkable statement: "I wish I had died before this and been a thing forgotten". Qur'anic commentators understood this statement as part of the pain and suffering of the righteous and that when trials became too difficult believers would some times wish that they did not exist. The statement also connects with the larger theme of life and death which is found within the Qur'an and the with the chapter (surat) of Maryam in particular.

Maryam and the Clash of Civilizations

I speak about a recent keynote address that I gave at the Pacific Northeast Virtual Exchange conference where I connect my research on the Islamic Mary or Maraym to COIL Virtual Exchange. Growing up in the 90s, there was a strong push for the "Clash of Civilizations" thesis, or that the "West" was in an intrinsic conflict with "Orient" and "Islam". It was "Islam versus the West" or the "West versus the Rest". Both my research and virtual exchange challenge this thesis and demonstrate that people from different regions of the world can learn from each other and mutually coexist.

Also, Maryam is attacked for her perceived sexual immorality which is similar to other figures in the life of the Prophet Muhammad, such as his wife 'Aisha. The slander, accusations, and criticism eventually lead to her defense through the words of Jesus/'Isa

The Vow of Silence - Verse 26 of the Chapter of Mary (Surat Maryam)

Shake the Palm Tree - Verse 25 of the Chapter of Mary (Surat Maryam)

After Maryam calls out in pain and anguish, a voice calls telling her to shake a palm tree and ripe dates will fall upon her. This is similar to other Qur'anic figures, such as Moses/Musa, who are told to act when they are in trying and difficult situation, such as when he was in front of the Red Sea. The lesson is to act rather than allow the pain and sorrow overtake you.

The Call From Below - Verse 24 of the Chapter of Mary (Surat Maryam)

After Maryam laments and wishes she was dead and long forgotten, she hears a call from below. This voice guides her on what to do next and informs her that she should not worry or be sad. This "call" connects her to Zechariah/Zakariyya as well as Moses/Musa who discussed later in the chapter. The verse further connects Maryam to the Mother of Moses/Musa who is also instructed to trust god and not worry about her child.

Life and Death - Verses 12-15 of the Chapter of Mary (Surat Maryam)

While silence and speech are major themes in Surat Maryam, so are life and death. After Zechariah/Zakariyya's impassioned plea, the divine voice introduces his son John/Yahya who is forerunner to Jesus/'Isa. The Chapter uses almost identical phrases to describe them, specifically the idea that they born, will die and be resurrected. Maryam also uses the word of "death" right before the "life" of Jesus/'Isa. The chapter thus argues that there is cyclical pattern between life and death and that after death comes life.

Maryam and Divine Questioning

Maryam and Jesus

After Maryam's birth and miracles, the Qur'an finally speaks about the birth of Jesus/'Isa. Jesus/'Isa is considered to be a "glad tiding" and blessing and his birth parallels with that of John/Yahya. The Qur'an makes an explicit connect between Maryam and Zechariah/Zakariyya and an implicit one between Maryam and Abraham/Ibrahim.

Maryam as Teacher

Maryam is not only a daughter and mother but also a teacher. In the Qur'an, she teaches Zechariah/Zakariyya a lesson about spirituality which leads to an epiphany and his own prayer for children. Maryam's model as a teacher inspires mystical and Sufi figures throughout history to teach about spirituality and to become closer to God.
