In episode 18 of The Get Better, Not Older Show, Dr. Rob Jones and RD Shannon Jones discuss the critical difference between being diagnosed and labeled in healthcare. Dr. Jones, a musculoskeletal expert, emphasizes the importance of differential diagnosis—a methodical approach to identifying the root cause of symptoms rather than just treating them superficially. He highlights how managed care and time constraints in modern medicine often lead to rushed, symptom-focused treatments, leaving underlying issues unaddressed. Shannon, a clinical dietitian, echoes this sentiment, pointing out how internal health issues, like gut imbalances, often manifest externally (e.g., skin conditions or weight resistance) and require foundational testing, such as GI mapping, for accurate diagnosis.

The seasoned duo critiques the trend of non-clinicians (e.g., massage therapists, coaches) overstepping their scope by diagnosing patients, which can lead to mislabeling and ineffective care. They advocate for precision medicine—addressing the root cause through thorough testing, movement, and strength-building, rather than accepting labels like "degenerative disc disease" or "IBS" as life sentences. Their message: challenge diagnoses, seek practitioners who prioritize foundational health, and remember that movement and proper nutrition are key to healing and aging well. However, achieving and maintaining that deficit isn’t just about eating less. Metabolic health, stress, sleep, and food quality all play critical roles. Chronic stress and high cortisol levels can slow fat loss, poor sleep can increase hunger by 30%, and an imbalanced microbiome can make weight loss much harder. The type of food eaten also matters. Highly processed foods, sugar, and inflammatory seed oils can disrupt hormones, spike blood sugar, and create cycles of cravings, making it difficult to sustain a calorie deficit.

Shannon explains how balancing meals with protein, healthy fats, fiber, and nutrient-dense carbs helps regulate appetite, maintain energy, and prevent blood sugar spikes. Exercise, particularly zone two activity like brisk walking, is key for fat metabolism and overall health. Strength training and HIIT workouts have benefits but should be used wisely to avoid excessive cortisol spikes that can hinder fat loss.

Beyond losing weight, the real goal is long-term health. Fat loss alone is meaningless if it comes at the cost of metabolic damage. The Get Better Not Older Protocol, available at HeyDrRob.com, provides a sustainable approach to weight loss, muscle building, and overall well-being. When nitric oxide levels are too low, arteries stay constricted, increasing blood pressure. Several common habits destroy nitric oxide production. Mouthwash kills the good oral bacteria needed for nitric oxide release. Fluoride toothpaste disrupts the microbiome, further reducing nitric oxide levels. Acid reducers like Nexium and Prilosec block magnesium and vitamin D absorption, two critical nutrients for blood vessel relaxation.

High uric acid is another hidden driver of hypertension, metabolic disease, and cardiovascular risk. The biggest culprit is high-fructose corn syrup, which is found in processed foods, sodas, and snacks. It suppresses nitric oxide and inflames blood vessels, making hypertension worse.

To lower blood pressure naturally, eliminating these root causes is key. Stopping the use of mouthwash and fluoride toothpaste helps preserve the bacteria needed for nitric oxide production. Avoiding acid reducers and focusing on better digestion through meal timing and digestive enzymes can improve nutrient absorption. Cutting high-fructose corn syrup and processed foods prevents uric acid buildup, reducing inflammation in the arteries. Eating nitric oxide-boosting foods like beets, leafy greens, celery, and berries can improve blood vessel function. Exercise and sunlight exposure also increase nitric oxide naturally, improving circulation and overall cardiovascular health.

High blood pressure isn’t just about salt or genetics. Discover why holiday activities like lifting boxes, decorating, or shoveling snow can trigger pain and what you can do to avoid it. Avoid exercises like sit-ups, crunches, and burpees, which can harm the spine, and replace them with safer alternatives like bird dogs and dying bugs. Explore the importance of using proper movement mechanics, such as hip hinging and bracing with intra-abdominal pressure, to protect your back during everyday tasks and workouts.

Key Insights and Takeaways: Everyday movements like brushing teeth, loading the dishwasher, or picking up totes can lead to cumulative back strain, but small adjustments make a big difference. A stable spine is more important than flexibility—maintaining proper curves and avoiding over-flexion is crucial. This episode reveals how maintaining strong, healthy cells can prevent wrinkles, promote firm and vibrant skin, and ward off chronic diseases. At the heart of this discussion is autophagy, the body’s natural cleanup process that clears away damaged cellular components to rejuvenate the body from the inside out.

Wrinkles and sagging skin are not just surface-level concerns—they often stem from cellular degradation. Factors like oxidative stress, inflammation, and the presence of “zombie cells” (damaged cells that linger and harm their neighbors) accelerate visible aging and undermine health. These cellular issues also contribute to chronic diseases, including heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes. Understanding and addressing these factors can help slow the aging process and boost longevity.

The episode dives into practical strategies for cellular health. Intermittent fasting, even with a simple 12-hour overnight fast, activates autophagy, which repairs damage and prevents cells from deteriorating prematurely. Proper exercise plays a crucial role as well, enhancing oxygen delivery and improving immune function, which helps protect the skin and body from aging and disease. Hot and cold exposure, such as saunas and cold plunges, can also stimulate cellular resilience, creating stress responses that promote repair and renewal.

Nutrition is another cornerstone of cellular health. Collagen supplementation supports skin elasticity and joint health, while antioxidants combat oxidative stress, protecting cells from damage. Avoiding processed foods, excessive sugar, and inflammatory seed oils is key to reducing premature cellular aging. Balanced meals rich in whole foods provide the necessary nutrients to fuel and repair cells effectively.

Sleep is a critical factor often overlooked. During deep rest, the body focuses on repairing damaged cells and flushing out toxins. Poor sleep deprives cells of this recovery time, accelerating visible aging and weakening the immune system. Prioritizing consistent, high-quality sleep is essential for maintaining vibrant skin and overall health.

By adopting these lifestyle changes—fasting, exercise, nutrient-rich eating, and better sleep—you can take control of your cellular health. With over 50 years of combined clinical experience, we’ve seen firsthand how critical sleep quality and sleep hygiene are for overall well-being. Sleep isn’t just about feeling rested—it’s foundational to everything from muscle recovery to joint health and even your metabolic function. Poor sleep can increase inflammation, elevate cortisol levels, and disrupt muscle repair, leading to joint pain, stiffness, and even long-term health problems like insulin resistance and obesity.

In today’s episode, we’re diving deep into the science of sleep and how it impacts your ability to move, feel, and live better. We’ll show you why sleep is essential for maintaining muscle mass, healing joint issues, and reducing inflammation. For athletes or those over 40 trying to maintain strength, sleep is where your body does the hard work of repairing and rebuilding muscles. Without proper sleep, protein synthesis decreases, making it harder to build and maintain muscle, while increasing your risk of injury.

Sleep also plays a major role in cognitive function, emotional regulation, and hormonal balance. A lack of sleep can disrupt your metabolism, leading to weight gain, insulin resistance, and chronic inflammation—all of which contribute to accelerated aging and a higher risk of diseases like diabetes and heart disease. We’ll explain how poor sleep elevates cortisol levels, which can further break down muscle tissue and intensify joint pain.

But it’s not just about the damage caused by sleep deprivation. We’ll also give you actionable tips on sleep hygiene to help you get the quality rest your body needs. From maintaining a consistent sleep schedule to creating a relaxing bedtime routine and optimizing your sleep environment, we’re covering all the strategies you can use to fall asleep faster and wake up feeling refreshed. Whether it's limiting screen time before bed, managing stress through relaxation techniques, or eating foods that support better sleep, these are steps anyone can take to improve their sleep quality and, in turn, their overall health.

We’ll also address how good sleep can support your immune system, reduce oxidative stress, and even increase your lifespan. Replacing these unhealthy fats with anti-inflammatory fats, like those found in grass-fed beef tallow, lard, and omega-3 fatty acids, can help reduce inflammation in the body and improve joint mobility.

Next, we cover the benefits of the carnivore diet, especially for people with autoimmune conditions. We explore how eliminating certain inflammatory foods can help reduce autoimmune flare-ups and improve joint function. While the carnivore diet may not be for everyone, its anti-inflammatory potential can be game-changing for those with chronic joint pain and autoimmune diseases.

Hydration is another key focus. Proper hydration supports joint health by keeping your cartilage healthy and your joints lubricated, which is critical for avoiding joint stiffness and pain. We talk about why you should aim for at least 100 ounces of water a day to prevent dehydration, reduce joint inflammation, and support overall health.

We also dive into the science behind anti-inflammatory diets and how incorporating foods rich in antioxidants, polyphenols, and omega-3s can significantly improve your joint health and help manage autoimmune disease symptoms. From grass-fed beef and fatty fish to berries and leafy greens, these foods are essential for keeping inflammation at bay and supporting healthy joints.

Lastly, we offer practical, actionable steps for preventing autoimmune disease and managing joint health as you age. From adopting an anti-inflammatory diet to eliminating processed foods, the choices you make today can have a huge impact on how your joints feel tomorrow.

Tune in to learn more about how to improve joint health, reduce inflammation, and avoid autoimmune disease as you age, with real-world tips you can start using today.

*ALL programs and protocols referenced in this episode, can be f

Support the show

Resources & Links

All programs and protocols referenced can be found at heydrrob.com

Dr. Rob’s Recommended Brands:

Peluva: https://peluva.com/DRROB

Rho Nutrition: https://rhonutrition.com/DRROB

Ketone-IQ: http://ketone.com/DRROB

**DISCLAIMER**
The information provided in this podcast/social media content is for general informational purposes only and is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.

Welcome to the Get Better Not Older podcast, the first of many more to come! We decided to create this podcast because we've noticed similar patterns in our clinical practices.

Our goal with the Get Better Not Older movement is to help you move better, feel better, and live better through the insights we provide. I've been practicing chiropractic for 25 years, specializing in the spine, joints, and soft tissue disorders. I do a lot of active release therapy and functional rehab to keep patients moving well.

Shannon has 31 years of experience as a clinical dietitian, specializing in obesity prevention and functional nutrition. She focuses on preventing disease through nutrition and recently sharpened her skills in integrative medicine, which she'll incorporate into our discussions.

We believe the future of medicine should focus on foundational health rather than just treating symptoms. My role is to find the cause of pain and improve movement, while Shannon addresses nutritional deficits to support overall health.

Between us, we have over 50 years of clinical experience. We often find ourselves playing the role of family physicians for our friends and family, helping them with various health issues. Our approach is not just about prescribing medicine but promoting health from the inside out.

A big part of our motivation is seeing people slip through the cracks as they age. We want to change the misconception that aging means becoming frail and dependent on medication. Instead, we believe in staying active and healthy, like the 86-year-old sprinter who ran a 100-meter dash in 17 seconds.

Investing in your health now can prevent expensive medical treatments later. We encourage people to spend a bit more on good food and proactive healthcare to avoid spending much more on medical treatments down the line.

Our lifestyle might seem intense, but we advocate for simple, sustainable changes that anyone can make. It's about making good choices most of the time and not being perfect. Everyone's health journey is different, and Shannon's expertise helps tailor individual plans to meet those needs.

Food isn't just fuel; it's emotional and celebratory. By learning to moderate and make healthy choices most of the time, we can all live better, not just older. Our podcast will provide tips, insights, and motivation to help you embrace this new way of living.

Support the show

Resources & Links

All programs and protocols referenced can be found at heydrrob.com

Dr. Rob’s Recommended Brands:

Peluva: https://peluva.com/DRROB

Rho Nutrition: https://rhonutrition.com/DRROB

Ketone-IQ: http://ketone.com/DRROB

**DISCLAIMER**
The information provided in this podcast/social media content is for general informational purposes only and is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
