Before he was a pastor, church planter, and missionary, Ariel Aguilar ran with gangs.

If you are new here, welcome! I’m Jan Johnson, your host. I’m glad you’re joining us and I hope that by the end of this show you feel encouraged and strengthened.

Today is December 30, 2025, and as it’s the end of the year and a beginning of a new year, I wanted to start doing one episode a month that is more of a round table discussion on a topic.

So, this episode is the beginning of that.

Joining me today are my daughter Sister Mercy, my husband Ed, and friends Marti and John Darcangelo.

Our topic is Faith, and bottom line, why we believe.

What leads us to believe in what others might call fairy tales of the Bible?

A talking donkey

A man swallowed by a whale and thrown up alive

People like Isaiah going to heaven who never died.

People like Jesus and Lazarus and some boy dying and rising again

1 Corinthians 1:18,

"For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God."

1 Corinthians 1:23 adds:

"but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles."

There's also 1 Corinthians 2:14, which expands on this idea:

"The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit."

“I Got You”: A Testimony of Healing, Purpose, and Knowing Jesus for Yourself with Armentha Hackett

This week, I had the honor of sitting down with Armentha Hackett—an incredible woman of faith with a powerful story of survival, healing, and a deeper understanding of who Jesus really is.

“You’re Not Going Home.”

Armentha noticed a shortness of breath, but chalked it up to a cold. When she finally went to urgent care, they rushed her straight to the emergency room.

“They asked me what I knew about oxygen levels. I said, ‘Normal’s like 98, 99%.’
The nurse said, ‘You’re at 62.’”

Armentha was admitted to the ICU. What followed were 45 days in the hospital, a battle against pneumonia, the flu, and a full-body shutdown caused by a respiratory infection. Doctors didn’t expect her to make it.

“I was hooked up to everything… I didn’t even know how bad it was. But I kept hearing this still, small voice:
‘I’m here. I got you.’”

It started with what she thought was just a cold. But God had a far greater plan—and presence—in what unfolded.

Lon and Ryan Wiksell, who are a father and son team,
both ordained Christian ministers, but in very different faith traditions. Lon has a Master's of Divinity from Oral Roberts University and a Doctorate of Ministry in Messianic Judaism from the King's University.
He continues to serve as an elder in his Messianic Gentile congregation near Kansas City. And though not Jewish, Ryan was raised by his parents in a Messianic Jewish community and went on to become an Episcopal priest, also in the Kansas City area.
Dr. Lon Wiksell founded our father Abraham in 2060 with his son Ryan Wiksell to promote awareness of the Jewishness of Jesus and Christianity as well as to educate churchgoers about Jewish festivals like Passover.

Lilia Kleczinski gives a haunting account of her early life, born prematurely and held in a hospital for her first three years. She was then moved to a military ground turned orphanage in Moldova which became home to thousands of unwanted children due to the huge gender disparity following WWII. The daily abuse and harsh regimen defined her childhood, living under the oppressive rule of the regime and the widespread corruption.

Lilia Klaczynski now resides in Madison County with her husband and four children however her life began much differently.

In 1981 Moldova, an economically challenged area then incorporated into the former Soviet Union as written about in her book Open Fields and Iron Curtains she was abandoned at birth before being moved into an orphanage which housed roughly 800 children.

Although she experienced many hardships including health struggles and emotional trauma, Klaczinski tells us that there were glimmers of hope which kept her going.

In the communist times the food was already becoming scarce as soon as the communism came down and there was no more food coming in, no more clothes coming in, so we would run off to the fields and orchards nearby—well nearby means many kilometers away but for us it was considered nearby and it was our place of freedom, our place of just expressing ourselves, and finding ourselves.

And again when I entrusted my granddaughter who was kidnapped by her father and brainwashed into believing my daughter had repeatedly abused her sexually.

A Sovereign God in a Suffering World with David LIbby

David's wife, Lisa, and he raised their two daughters, Kayla and Bethany, in rural Maine.

They hunted, fished, foraged for wild edible plants, went camping in remote and undiscovered places, grew gardens, raised livestock, and preserved their own food.

Lisa was a homeschooling/homesteading mom, and David was a self-employed logger.
As an unintended consequence of this lifestyle, we were all bitten by dozens of ticks.

About the time their girls were in their mid-teens the whole family had become desperately ill with Lyme Disease, along with a whole host of complications.

For years he served in the church, first as a deacon, and then as an elder.

He has long been a self-taught student of Theology and philosophy and has learned all the correct answers to some of the most difficult questions, and can hold his own as a Christian apologist and Theologian.

But when his family's health fell apart, he discovered something that the books do not teach: that there is a sharp disconnect between an encyclopedia of head knowledge, and an application of that knowledge in the muddy and bloody trenches.

It is there that his book was conceived.

The impact caused the car that Calvin was a passenger in to burst into flames, plunging him into a clouded existence that included a walk through the valley of the shadow of death, leaving him on the threshold of eternal life. Eternity surrounded him and filled him with an absolute certainty of heaven. Standing before the Master and all his creation Calvin became troubled with the vision of his judgment and the life that he brought with him. Consumed with feelings of emptiness, he needed fulfillment.

Overcoming trials and difficulties is more prevalent in the Christian Walk than people ever realize, and it was just as true for Jesus as he lived among us.

Many persons, including those who have been in church for a long time, have deep questions, even doubts about their faith, and it is not unusual to learn of those who have shut the door on God in their lives.

To candidly deal with those questions is the purpose of her book, The Trouble with Jesus: Considerations Before You Walk Away.

After more than 20 years in ministry (faith-based counseling and church settings), Constance has found many persons in the pews (or chairs) have on their hearts people whom they love but who have serious obstacles to accepting Jesus.

Too often they feel the "church" is the place to be saved discounting how their witness is primary for the Holy Spirit to work in lives. Simply put, they don't know how to do it.

This book is first written for that doubter or skeptic with an edgy voice that challenges Jesus' narrative, faithful to the Gospel story as Jesus as Son of God. In that place, it is an excellent tool whereby believers can present it to these persons and introduce Christ with, "If you would read this, could we have a conversation?" As said, the Holy Spirit then has an open door in which to enter lives and confirm a commitment.

Today’s guests are Shawn and Nancy Paul who have been missionaries in Honduras and are presently serving in Guatemala.

Nancy has been serving in children's ministry for over 30 years. She has a huge passion for helping develop others with the same heart for children as she does. Today, she has trained countless children’s teachers in Central America.

She writes and produces her own children’s curriculum. We're even more excited that this material is now being shared with approximately 43 missionaries and ministers in Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Belize!

For those in the mountainous and rural areas, they still, to this day, depend on the local radio station. Shawn has seen remarkable success in reaching those on the radio. Currently, they are ministering on the radio in Honduras, Guatemala, and Belize. Our vision is to expand to other areas of Central America. They estimate that they are reaching around 5 to 10 thousand people through this ministry.
