King Kong, the Eighth Wonder of the World, has lived so many lives across movies and theme parks. We follow Kong from the 1933 classic to the attractions that helped Universal Studios evolve from a tour into a destination, to the surprising story of how King Kong vs. Godzilla finally did the monster's creator in.

Most importantly, even those who think they know everything possible about the 1933 R.K.O. classic will be amazed by Pete's deep dive into the movie's origins and the astonishing story of the creative force behind the story: Ruth Rose.

Then we hit the theme park turning points: Hollywood’s King Kong Encounter with Bob Gurr, Jay Stein, and Henry Bumstead, including the bridge shake illusion, the close-up animatronic terror, and the legendary banana breath effect. We compare it to Florida’s Kongfrontation, a bigger, riskier swing with gondolas, two Kongs, timing challenges, and opening-day chaos. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad feels like pure fun: a runaway mine train, a mountain of red rock, and a few perfect sight gags that hit at 35 miles an hour. But the ride’s real story starts way earlier, in the myths America told itself about the frontier and the Western movies that turned those myths into pop culture. We follow that thread from Frederick Jackson Turner’s famous frontier thesis to how Walt Disney shaped his original Frontierland into something that resembles actual history.

Then things get messy. Mark Davis’ fingerprints are all over Disney's greatest achievements and in the late-'60s he began designing his theme park masterpiece: Thunder Mesa and the Western River Expedition. And that's when things start to go wrong.

But from the wreckage of the project emerged one of Disney's greatest attractions: Big Thunder Mountain Railroad - the only ride that can actually be prescribed by a Doctor as a cure for kidney stones.

Universal Studios' evolution from modest Tram Tour to the top challenger for the theme park throne was due to the fierce drive of one man: Jay Stein.
Intense, ambitious and sometimes frightening, Stein let his competitiveness and, later, his seething rage against the Walt Disney Company forge an entirely new path for theme parks. By the time he left the company in 1993, it was no longer the underdog, but an innovator that the rest of the industry - Disney included - had to keep up with.

Stein passed away on November 5th.  Join us in remembering the legend and celebrating his life.

Kelly and Pete explore the surprising origins of personal flight technology, beginning with Wendell Moore of Bell Aeronautics, who adapted stabilization jets from Chuck Yeager's sound barrier-breaking X-1 aircraft into a wearable rocket pack. Though limited to just 21 seconds of flight time and powered by 90% pure hydrogen peroxide, these devices captured worldwide imagination, appearing not just at Disneyland and Disney World, but at presidential demonstrations, the 1984 Olympics opening ceremony, and in James Bond's "Thunderball."

The rocket belt's journey through entertainment history connects fascinating dots between science fiction and reality. From Buck Rogers' "jumping belt" of 1920s comics to Commando Cody's rocket adventures in 1950s film serials, America had been primed to embrace personal flight long before it became technically possible. When Disney showcased these devices above Tomorrowland, they were fulfilling dreams decades in the making.

But this is just the beginning of a story that grows increasingly strange. As competing rocket belt designs emerge, the narrative takes unexpected turns involving lawn-mowing teenagers who became rocket men, alleged drug smuggling operations, baseball bat confrontations, stolen equipment, and the birth of troubling rivalries that will ultimately lead to truly startling consequences.

This first installment of a two-part rocket belt saga lifts off from the Flight Circle of yesterday's Tomorrowland and soars through a landscape where Disney history intersects with one of technology's most persistently appealing—yet perpetually impractical—dreams. The Main Street Electrical Parade is the most famous Disney parks parade for a good reason, it somehow synthesizes everything that is contained in Walt's original park - fantasy, history, progress - in a joyous and timeless spectacle.

And Walt Disney was long gone before it was conceived making this perhaps the best answer ever to the question "What would Walt have done."
He'd have done this.

A puzzling anomaly today - we dive for hours on packed highways to a place where we pay money to simulate driving on packed highways - the Richfield Autopia attraction was once a vision of an America poised on the brink of progress and possibility.
