This episode is special one. It’s not every day that we take a deep dive into human waste, but here we are, and it is surprisingly fascinating. 

We sat down with Jojo Casanova, founder of Kompotoi, to explore the inspiration behind their beautifully designed compositing toilets (yes, toilets can be beautiful and these truly are). Together, we unpack what happens to the byproducts from their toilets and why society moved away from using human fertilizer. Jojo believes it is time to start thinking differently about waste.

As a pioneering company, Kompotoi is leading the way in education and awareness surrounding human output. They are doing a tremendous job of challenging deeply embedded assumptions and reframing our thoughts to consider the concept of seeing waste as the valuable resource it is.

Switzerland is an alpine nation with roughly 1,400 glaciers. We are fortunate to have stunning winters that draw tourists from around the globe, but as we discovered in episode 17, Swiss winters and the health of our glaciers are changing drastically. 

Protect Our Winters was founded by the American professional snowboarder Jeremy Jones in 2007 and the Swiss chapter in 2017 by Nicholas Bornstein. The focus of the organization is to communicate positive and emotional information as a means to channel passion for the outdoors. Once that emotional connection has been ignited, it is easier for people and organizations to turn their love for the mountains into concrete climate protection measures. 

Sitting down with Maren Stöber, former Deputy Head for the Organization, we learned a wealth of information about Protect our Winters and simple ways in which individuals can make a difference.

In this episode we had the honor of sitting down with SapoCycle president and founder Dorothée Schiesser. We had a tour of the SapoCycle facility gaining deeper insight into the processing and logistics while meeting some of the remarkable people behind this non-profit organization.

The concept behind SapoCycle is simple; collect discarded hotel soaps from participating partners and upcycle them into new soap bars that are distributed to those most in need. Due to current regulations, the soap cannot be sold. Our meeting with Dorothée was inspirational and taught us that if you lead with heart and intention, anything is possible. Thank you SapoCycle for your time and the work you do!
