Music is in the air again this weekend at the Washakie County Fairgrounds when Big Praise presents Musicfest August 2nd from 4-10 PM. I’m guessing everyone is at the Washakie County Fair. It’s so quiet around the studio and everyone was too busy to come talk to me today so as per usual here I sit talking to myself. At least I know one person is listening.

I’m nearing retirement well if I can figure out how to pay the bills….and everyone asks what I am going to do when I quit working. Every year at fair time someone asks me about the history of the fair. I’m guessing they think I am one of the older supporters. I haven’t missed our county fair in 60 years!  I’ve decided that one thing I’ll do when I retire is put together the History of the Washakie County Fair. For fun I’ve spent time in the morgue… of the newspaper researching and have put together some of the facts and some anecdotal information. I thought today I’d share just a little and remind you of what is happening at the Washakie County Fair 2025 …..

I am finally a queen and the Washakie County Fair Royalty even gave me a crown! The Washakie County fair gets underway this week with the shooting sports and horse show but really heats up next week with youth shows, exhibits, food and entertainment! You’ll hear from the real royalty Hailey Wall Washakie County Fair Queen, Mesa Whitehead Washakie County Fair Princess and Aspyn Noland Washakie County Fair Junior Princess. The 2025 Royal Court has the best possible mentor in Beth Stiver and you are going to be impressed at the excitement these girls have for the Washakie County Fair 2025!

In the second half, our fair theme continues with Chief Washakie Chapter FFA President, Kyston Rollema and Renegade 4-H Member Tylee Clark giving us a bit of insight about their fair plans and what fair week means to them. The Chief Washakie Chapter of the FFA is 95 years old and Grace Godfrey Advisor of the Chapter today stops by to talk about the reunion event and how times have changed for FFA in the 20 years she has been involved here in Worland. The holiday festivities are in full swing in our hometown. Don’t forget Pinnacle Bank’s Festival of Trees December 6-7 at the Worland Community Center. The auction is Friday night at 6. Proceeds go to local non-profits.

Santa will be having breakfast at the Worland Senior Center from 8AM -11AM all are invited to a pancake breakfast and photos with Santa will be available. This event is presented by the Kiwanis Club of Worland and proceeds go back to the community.

Saturday December 7th is the Worland Ten Sleep Chamber of Commerce Parade of Lights downtown Worland at 6PM.

The 70th anniversary of the Washakie County Homemaker’s Hobby Day is this Saturday, November 16 at the Washakie County Fairgrounds. Christie St. Clair and Nina Schreibeis Nelson will give us some history, information on how to become a vendor and where are the proceeds go in our community.

Almost as many people in Wyoming are lost each year due to suicide as traffic fatalities. Wyoming is one of the leading states in the nation for suicides per 100,000 population. A new focus on mental health and suicide prevention is coming from the Governor’s Office and many organizations across Wyoming. On this episode Lila Jolley Community Prevention Specialist with the Washakie Prevention Coalition will share the details on a program coming to Worland from Prosper that will provide free training and a community night to raise awareness.

Ten Sleep School is the number one school in all of Wyoming according to the most recent WYTOPP (Wyoming’s Test of Proficiency and Progress) assessment. The Easter bunny is not the only thing hopping around Washakie County! Local Worland businesses are teaming up to offer local shoppers a chance to win big with the first annual Spring Hop ‘N Shop. Danielle Earl of Rocky Mountain Framing and Sarah Kluver from HASCO are at it again working with local businesses and local shoppers to have some fun supporting our hometown economy just in time for Mother’s Day, Graduation and Father’s Day. You’ll hear all about it!

Then stay tuned for an inside look at the recent legislative budget session through the eyes of House District 27’s Representative Martha Lawley. She explains the property tax bills passed that will help many of our Wyoming citizens save dollars in these challenging times without cutting the needed funds that help our cities, counties and towns keep the lights on.

Martha talks about important bills for education and parental rights, highlights just how all 11.8 billion dollars of the state budget are allocated and talks about her disappointment for Governor Gordon’s veto choices. 

Finally, you’ll hear an update as of Tuesday March 26, 2 PM about the possibility of a special legislative session to over-turn the Governor’s vetoes.

Young people graduating from High School matter in our hometown. This week I visited with Washakie County School District #1 Superintendent  Tawn Argeris and Worland High School Principal Bruce Miller about how changes are being made at Worland High School to insure ALL students have what they need to graduate. 
Listen, to learn more about the Alternative High School, planned for this fall to allow students who just don't fit into the learning criteria currently offered. You'll understand the difference between Alternative School and Pathways Programs and get excited about how High School students are preparing for their future.
NO more federal school lunch program is also part of the discussion as well as positive first numbers for enrollment for the Class of 2037!

Spring hasn't quite sprung but on this episode of Hometown Matters I'll visit with the King of giant pumpkin growing Jay Richard. Jay is already planning the great pumpkin drop in October where a giant pumpkin will be dropped from a crane on a mystery object splattering the crowd with pumpkin guts. But first he is planning to grow a 2,000 pound pumpkin.
Stevie Kowalczyk returns to the show talking all about the Community Garden and how families in the area can not only get involved from seeding to weeding but how anyone can stop by in the summer and get some fresh produce .
Finally I got to visit with Jeremy White the manager of Bomgaars Worland. Jeremy serves on the board of the Washakie Development Association. You'll get to hear how WDA helped Bomgaars get started in Worland and all about their experience opening a business in our hometown. You'll even hear about a former contestant in the Chicken of Tomorrow Contest!
