Today, the topic I am going to talk about is “Caterpillar, Hurry Up and Come Out!”

Through a simple narrative and a story, I would like to explain the basic rules of these three English grammatical structures.

These are rules that I only began to study and understand after I took a language course at university. After I explained these rules to my students and helped them understand them, I asked them whether any of their teachers had ever taught them English in this way. Their answer was always, “No.”

Three Basic Structures of English Grammar

1. Word

A word is a single unit. It can belong to any grammatical category, for example:

house — noun

drink — verb

beautiful — adjective

quickly — adverb

2. Phrase

A phrase is a combination of two or more words. It can belong to different grammatical categories, but it does not have a subject.

For example:

new house — a new house

coming out — coming out

run quickly — run quickly

storybook — storybook

3. They live in a small pond beside Mushroom Hill. The family consists of Duck Dad, Duck Mum, and their three duck children: the eldest daughter, Nana; the second son, Edison; and the youngest daughter, Maggie.

The family had entered a storytelling competition organised by a community in the neighbouring village called the “Goose Community.” The day of the competition had finally arrived.

This morning, Duck Dad and Duck Mum set off with their three children.

Because Nana had unfortunately suffered from a very high fever when she was little, her parents knew that she had developed some difficulties with her thinking and could only express herself using simple language.

Her second brother, Edison, attended the goose language school in the neighbouring community. In order to make it easier for the geese to understand the story, he decided to act as a duck-to-goose interpreter for his younger sister, Maggie.

The following is Nana’s storytelling speech:

Nana’s Story

Good morning, everyone! My name is Nana.

I am very grateful to my parents for raising me from a young age. They have taken such good care of me! They also taught me to speak a lot of “Duck Language” and gave me lots of delicious “duck food” every day. So, I am very grateful to them.

When I grow up, I would like to use the technology I know to help “build” a better community.

This is not just about that. I also want to help “build” a footbridge—a bridge that I have always dreamed of—which will connect our duck and goose communities.

This will make it easier and more convenient for the residents of both places to travel to the other side. It will also make transportation more convenient.

This is one of my dreams.

Every night, before I go to sleep (覺, gaau3), I look up at the “ceiling” and count the stars. Then I can fall sweetly asleep.

That is the end of my story. Thank you, everyone.

Maggie’s Story

As for the youngest daughter, Maggie, she had attended the duck-language school near their home since she was little, where she studied “Traditional Duck Writing.”

Therefore, she chose to tell this story using Traditional Duck Writing.

Below is Maggie’s story. Her brother Edison translated her “Duck Language” into “Goose Language” simultaneously for the audience.

Hello, everyone. My name is Maggie.

I am very grateful to my parents for raising me to become a “duck.” Since I was little, they have taken care of me in every possible way, and they also taught me a great deal of “Duck Language.” Therefore, I am extremely grateful to them.

After I grow up (長, zoeng2), I hope that I can build a bridge for our duck community, connecting our duck and goose communities.

This will enable the residents of both communities to travel between the two places more conveniently and quickly, making transportation more convenient.
