S7E06 | Edward Ward - From Bronx Beats To Global Grooves

Edward Ward, aka DJ Eddie-Ed discovered his love for music early in life, growing up in the Bronx during hip hop’s infancy. Inspired by legends like Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash, he developed his craft on Technics turntables, DJing parties and drawing crowds. His love for NYC club sounds and Shep Pettibone’s 98.7 Kiss Mastermixes shaped his style.

While attending SUNY Buffalo, DJ Eddie-Ed launched his first DJ business, performing at campus and community events, and became a Friday night DJ on WRUB radio. In the late ’80s, he embraced house music, frequenting iconic venues like Paradise Garage and Zanzibar, expanding his repertoire to underground house sounds.

As an Air Force DJ, he gained acclaim at McGuire Air Force Base and Fort Dix, winning “Battle of the DJ” contests two years in a row. By the mid-’90s, Edward paused his traveling DJ career to focus on family and church work, honing his production skills as a sound engineer for Bethany Baptist Church.

In 2005, DJ Eddie-Ed revived his career, blending his DJ expertise with production experience. By 2010, his business had evolved into a top-tier entertainment and production company, delivering soulful and afro house mixes with a touch of classics. By 2016, he performed at major venues alongside top DJs and collaborated with artists and producers like Joe Flame, Adam Cruz, and Eddie Nicholas, releasing projects on platforms like Traxsource, iTunes, and Spotify.

Today, in 2024, Edward Ward has expanded his DJ, video, and sound services across the tri-state area. As an Air Force veteran, retired instructional technology administrator, and certified Part 107A Remote Pilot, Edward founded Drone Tech Navigators Academy to introduce young people of color to drone technology.

In his free time, Edward serves his community through his fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc, and enjoys golf, cycling, kayaking, traveling, and drone photography.

Donald Crossley, a visionary entrepreneur and cultural pioneer, played a pivotal role in shaping Chicago's vibrant dance music scene and fostering the birth of House music.

Born in 1932, and raised in Chicago, Donald Crossley was a young man employed at Michael Reese hospital when he and some friends decided to join the Disco craze that was taking over America. They made frequent weekend trips to New York City to attend loft parties. One morning during breakfast, Donald's mother suggested that instead of always traveling to New York, they should host parties in Chicago - and that marked the beginning of the social club US Studios.

They hosted events around the city until they secured a permanent location at 555 W. Adams, which became the original US Studios/The Warehouse, a groundbreaking gay nightclub that provided a safe, inclusive space for the LGBTQ+ community. This club became a hub for social gatherings and a breeding ground for new ideas and musical trends. After a few years, they relocated to South Federal Street with a new name, The Bowery.

Donald and the original US Studio members held parties at The Bowery until 1978, when they decided to explore different paths. Crossley transitioned to a career as a concierge at the Hyatt Regency Chicago and Hilton Chicago hotels, earning recognition as Employee of the Year for his work as a concierge at the Renaissance Hotel at O'Hare. In 2019, Donald retired from the Hyatt Centric Hotel and is now enjoying life.

Crossley's foresight and dedication to fostering a vibrant music community solidified his legacy as a key figure in the development of the House music genre. Crossley's entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to creating inclusive spaces for marginalized communities had a profound impact on Chicago's cultural landscape. His legacy as a pioneer of House music and a champion of diversity continues to resonate, shaping the global dance music scene to this day.

As founder of the Chosen Few DJs and longtime music industry professional, Wayne has helped shape popular music and dance culture. His music career includes work as a DJ, producer, and A&R executive with Trax Records, Jive Records and RCA Records.

Wayne is a recipient of the NAACP Image Award for his work with Aretha Franklin and was nominated for a Grammy award in 2014 for his work with Jennifer Hudson. He continues to produce music and perform at event and clubs across the globe.

Kevin is one half of the songwriting/production team known as BLAZE. They have been recording dance-oriented music for over 25 years and are considered to be pioneers in soulful house sound.

BLAZE, the trio started to develop demo recordings in the style of the days popular club music. With “DJ” Kevin at the controls, Josh “the piano man” on the synthesizer and the “lead vocal” styling of Chris, they turned out song after song for other artist and producers to record. Some included “This Time” by Colonel Abrams knock off Hunter Hayes, “One Man” by Chanelle and “Reachin’ ” by Phase II. The three ultimately signed their first record deal with the newly formed Quark records in ’85, producing three major club hits of the time; “Whatcha Gonna Do”, “If You Should Need A Friend” and “Can’t Win For Losing”.

He is a gate keeper New York’s soulful dance music.

He has produced some of the best outdoor festival events through his Melting Pot Global brand that was started in 2004. He has produced the largest events at the famed Coney Island Boardwalk where is had guests ranging from Louie Vega, John “Jellybean” Benitez, Tony Humphries, DJ Spinna, Ian Friday to the You tube famed event with Sting International that drew over 5000 revelers.

He was one of the resident DJs for Jellybean’s “Ain’t Nothin’ But A House Party” for 3 years. When it comes to the soulful house scene he is the only DJ/Promoter to have created and done successful event at public parks such as Battery Park, Empire Fulton State Park, Riverbank State Park and the Frying Pan. No has been able to duplicate that. Through Melting Pot Global djs such as The Martinez Brothers got the necessary venue and press to give their careers the impetus to superstardom.

Edward Forchion (born Robert Edward Forchion, Jr July 23, 1964), also known as NJWeedman, is an American Rastafari cannabis rights and free speech activist, perennial candidate, actor, writer, and restaurateur.[1] He is the founder of the Legalize Marijuana Party.

A resident of New Jersey and California, he is a registered medical cannabis user. He has been arrested and convicted for some of his activities and has mounted various legal defenses and challenges to laws regarding cannabis.

Forchion uses the moniker NJWeedman.[1] He has attempted to have his name legally changed to NJWeedman.com (his domain name), but was denied, first by the courts in New Jersey in 2004 and in another case in California in 2011, which cited, among other things, comity with New Jersey's ruling.[19][20]

On October 17 of 2022, a Mercer County, NJ judge approved his petition to change his name. NJWeedman.com expects his close friends and family will still call him "Ed," but he intends to otherwise make full use of his new name.[21]

In September 2020, during one of his political campaigns for New Jersey public office and the legalization of marijuana on the ballot, Forchion started his potcast, Get On The Cannabus, on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and YouTube. The podcast interviews marijuana entrepreneurs and raffles off free cannabis products in what is known as the Reefer Raffle. When the podcast began, Forchion sold weed illegally on camera in protest of the unjust cannabis laws in New Jersey and America, in what he called "Selling Weed Like He's White." After multiple episodes, marijuana was legalized in New Jersey and NJ Weedman's Joint became the location of the first unofficial New Jersey Recreational Dispensary on January 1, 2021.

He is a film maker and historian. Kervyn is the Associate Producer, Historian and Co-writer of the movie “Maestro-Documentary”; a film which explores the history, the roots, and the spirit of New York House Music. He is presently a producer of another film “Hands To The Sky” documentary that turns a lens on deejays, musicians, fans and feelings inspired by outdoor soulful and deep house music dance parties. As an activist he initiated and created the “HOUSE COALITION” float that participates and is the main staple of the NYC DANCE PARADE. Starting in 2009 he engineered and created the now wildly successful “Official Paradise Garage Reunion” that draws 2000 devotees every year to hear the 2 remaining residents of the fabled club.

The challenge of never knowing what to expect from a crowd is what drives Kervyn Mark to consistently provide a solid groove and more importantly a spiritual musical experience. And the world is unanimous: Kervyn has been booked for high profile events presented by Body and Soul NY (5 times) Roots NYC, FUNKBOX NYC, 718 Sessions, PS 1, Festivus, Soul Summit @ Fort Greene, Sundae Sermon, and the list goes on. He has played at events attended and/or hosted by Madonna. Yet Kervyn maintains his street credibility by jacking bodies both at high society gigs for places like Brooklyn Terrace(NYC) and at underground grass roots parties like Roots NYC and Funkbox. S6E03 | Thommy Davis - Thommatized

Being an instrumental part of the dance music scene in Baltimore initially starting at record stores, Thommy has been involved in Baltimore’s various music genres that have kept Baltimoreans enthralled. Pioneering the way in Italian music wave with its early introduction and then being the first outside of Chicago to bring House into popularity gave Baltimore a music history that has founded many of the sounds being produced out of the city. In Music Liberated Record Store and then Metro Stereo Record Store, and then 12 Inch Dance Records (DC and Baltimore) he created the new salesman field of DJ salesman. Not only did he sell the music to the customers but skillfully demonstrated how and what was worthy of attention in skills and selection. This new category of salesman caught on and since then has yet to be redefined.

Thommy was also one of the first to create and distribute his own dance record label (Thomix Records), opening the eyes of fellow Baltimoreans to the possibilities of independent promotion and distribution and inspiring other local producers. With his label he crossed the country and the world, licensing his productions in several countries around the world and giving Baltimore a reputation for dance music. His first label release, “Get the Hole” w/ DJ Spen & Beatmaster Mozes is still a classic and is still widely sought after although it was pressed from a cassette master! After the success of the first release he went on to do others and thus the Baltimorean independent label scene was born.

While with the original production company, Thommy and the boys received several awards, gold records and even a Grammy nomination. Maintaining several major labels at once (WEA, CBS, and MCA) and multiple indie labels, the boys broke the mold for the DJ/Producer. Projects such as Ultra Nate’ and Crystal Waters have crossed the ocean and still to this day have progressed and shown the world that they are icons in her own right. As a DJ he has played at almost all the Baltimore clubs at one time or another. He’s known for his relentless energy and his passion for dance music and creativity. From legendary Baltimore/DC clubs such as Odells, Fantasy, Last Stop, Clubhouse, Underground, Paradox, and many too numerous to mention he is known for his energy and his skills to please the dancer.

A dancer himself, he produces, remixes, writes and plays what he likes to hear and feel…dance music! Not just a DJ, not just a producer, not just a writer, Thommy consistently feeds the music scene with effervescence and passion. Many of his past works will make it hard to out do, but to know him is to know that you wouldn’t bet against it. The list of songs that he has either produced, written or inspired are endless and with Quantize Recordings is continually expanding the love of music. Along side his good friend and partner since the very beginning, DJ Spen and he have a mission in music, a bond in friendship and a shared spirituality that encompasses all that they do and love.

S6E02 | DJ Paul Scott - The Gospel According To B.O.P.

Paul Scott started as a DJ in his early teens. Making the transition to DJing was quite simple for Paul. By the age of 5, his interest in music was quite evident to his parents. They showered him with musical instruments. As a teenager, he joined a local mobile DJ group called Gentlemen of Leisure Disco (G.O.L.D. Productions). Paul’s knowledge of music production and instrumentation led him to perform with local bands.

After Paul left the stage performing with his band at the nightclub, he went to the dance club to study the top DJs in Newark and learned how to move the crowd. Upon entering college Paul hooked up with a new DJ friend and formed a disco duo named Sounds in Motion Disco. They toured the Northern and Central Jersey college campuses, rocking crowds of hundreds consistently. Paul’s deep desire for music and creativity drove him into music production during his college years. The doors of opportunity swung open wider in the 90s with the formation of Brothers of Peace Entertainment.

With close to 100 releases in 10 years, the opportunity to DJ in more respected establishments was accomplished. Paul was a resident DJ at Club Sensations in Newark for several years. His house music releases gained him popularity and landed him in Europe for studio work and DJ gigs abroad. Several DJ tours include London, Amsterdam, Sardinia, and Prussia Italy. Currently, Paul work as a mobile DJ with his own set he travels with.

Although he has a love for today’s house music, his other specialties are Old School Club Classics, R&B, Top 40, and Disco.” I have a passion for the R&B, and Disco music from the ’70s, 80’s, and 90s. From DJing at local establishments to playing in major clubs, Paul keeps busy using his God-given talent to please thousands of satisfied partygoers.

ECHT (pronounced “ESHT”) Coffeehouse and Bistro, is a Black-owned 4th wave coffeehouse, microdistillery and bistro, bringing premium single-origin coffee, teas and locally-sourced food offerings to Mt. Oliver Borough. ECHT Coffeehouse and Bistro is the brain-child of owners James Tyler (retired UPMC Critical Care, BSN) and husband, Dr. Jörg Gerlach (University of Pittsburgh medical research investigator). After the pair visited a coffeehouses in Berlin, Germany, Tyler wanted to bring the experience of European-style coffeehouses back home to America with his own touch. For both Tyler and Gerlach ECHT is a love letter to Mt. Oliver Borough and the City of Pittsburgh. Visiting ECHT Coffeehouse, patrons will see, taste and experience Tyler’s vision by way of ECHT’s food menu, interior design details and coffee offerings.

“Écht” – a German word meaning “substantial; authentic; genuine”, is the standard by which ECHT Coffeehouse operates. ECHT Coffeehouse currently roasts and serves coffee from the Sidama and Yirgacheffe regions of Ethiopia; the bedrock and origin of coffee. ECHT Coffeehouse’s fluid-bed roaster, Mavam espresso machine, and Fetco extractor, are some of the centerpieces of their espresso and coffee making. Tyler and ECHT have rotating offerings like the special con panna (espresso, cacao powder, confectioners sugar, dried spices and botanicals and house-made whipped cream) and the espresso romano, help the single-origin beans shine.

The food offerings of ECHT Coffeehouse and Bistro are done in partnership between owner and epicure Tyler and Chef Tevin James. ECHT serves dishes derived from Tyler’s world travels and life experiences and the talents of Chef James’ flavor, plating and textural . With emphasis on seasonality and local-sourcing, dishes like the braised greens and grits (with optional bacon lardons and cashew creme) and savory phyllo crinkle (egg, mushroom, cheese and thyme) showcase ECHT Coffeehouse’s dedication to quality and delicious comfort foods.

ECHT Coffeehouse is part of ECHT Project; a conceptualized hub and confluence of artists, artisans and craftsmen. ECHT Coffeehouse’s interior and exterior metal work were completed on-the-spot by ECHT metalsmiths. He launched West Point Training to help people reach their full fitness and overall potential. Shane was a standout student-athlete in high school and was nationally ranked with offers to play basketball for several Division I programs, but poor decisions cost him this opportunity. The lessons learned from this experience helped shape his approach to fitness and training. As he likes to tell trainees, “THE WAY WE TRAIN IS THE WAY WE LIVE,” and encourages them to make the choices that will get them closer to their fitness and life goals. Shane has trained celebrities, and college and professional athletes, including baseball legend Ken Griffey and Hip Hop pioneer Kareem “Biggs” Burke. He has been featured as a guest speaker at colleges and universities and had the opportunity to work with and speak to the St. Francis University men's basketball program.

Tim Lewis (born December 18, 1961) is an American football coach and former player who is the defensive coordinator for the Arlington Renegades of the XFL. He played college football for the University of Pittsburgh and was drafted by the Green Bay Packers of the National Football League (NFL) in the first round of the 1983 NFL Draft.

Following a neck injury that cut his playing career short after four seasons, Lewis began serving as a coach in the collegiate and professional levels and obtained his first head coaching position with the Birmingham Iron of the Alliance of American Football (AAF) in 2019. He also served as the defensive backs coach for the St. Louis BattleHawks of the XFL until the league folded in 2020.

My name is Terri Harper. I am a proud Trenton native and graduate of Notre Dame High School. I am a teacher, mother and a woman of faith. My business was born out of my need for great honey during the pandemic, but it quickly turned into something more. The farmer’s market that I would visit to buy my honey was closed. So I found the bee farm and began to purchase the honey directly from the bee farm. I said “if I’m in search of raw honey I’m sure other people are too”. On my second trip to the farm, I bought $100.00 worth of honey to subsequently invest into my emerging business. I came home and made a Facebook video describing my new business. At the time I referred to it as “this new thing I’m doing”. Within one day, I had so many friends willing to support my new venture.

By 2021, I had begun to become a brand and “Terri the Honey Lady” was born. I had gotten a logo design and labels with my name. At this point I said to myself “ this is something BIG”. My customer base grew and people started to want to see more of my videos advertising my product. I call this phase our “baby phase” where just like with your children you look back on photos with nostalgia. I never considered myself an entrepreneur. I had entertained the usual side businesses like Mary Kay representative and Scentsy; a candle melts company but nothing really stuck with me. This was so different. I wanted to learn more about honey and it’s benefits and I enjoyed it! My beloved father was an entrepreneur. He had a well-known bar called “Charlie’s tavern” in Trenton. When I was younger, people would stop us and greet him with such respect and love. They had good times in his bar. I inherited my entrepreneurial spirit from him and learned the power of relationships in business.

In this role, DeAnna serves as a key advisory for several non-profit, philanthropic, health tech, and trade organizations as they seek to create equitable solutions that advance whole-person care.

Immediately prior to this role, DeAnna served as Executive Vice President, and the inaugural Chief Social Justice and Accountability Officer for RWJBarnabas Health. DeAnna designed a comprehensive strategic framework to improve health outcomes, promote health equity and eliminate health disparities. The development of Ending Racism Together, employed data- driven methodologies to improve organizational culture and reduce healthcare costs. Additionally, DeAnna designed Health Beyond the Hospital which integrated social factors into the clinical setting by overcoming barriers for both providers and patients using a multi-modal social determinants of health screening tool, paired with patient-centered outreach and follow-up.

Before her tenure at RWJBarnabas Health, DeAnna served for more than seven years as the Chief Engagement Officer at Benefits Data Trust (BDT), a national social change organization, where she facilitated cross-sector partnerships, diversified the organization’s revenue streams and oversaw the organization’s strategic positioning. Additionally, was appointed by Governor James E. McGreevey as the Assistant Commissioner for the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs overseeing community development, division on women, Center for Hispanic Policy, and many administrative functions.

DeAnna serves on the board of trustees of The Root Cause Coalition, Corporation for Supportive Housing and Women @NJPAC. DeAnna has been recognized by ROI-NJ as an Influencer of Color, an Influencer in Healthcare, and an Influencer in Business. Myrtha Jasmin (MJ) was born in Brooklyn, NY, and raised in Lawrence Township. "I moved to Princeton because it offers a lot of opportunities, but I do believe there should be more diversity in the town and that people of color need more of a voice than they have had previously. Plus, the whole country needs to be in a better place. It's time for a new set of eyes and a listening ear," she said. She is particularly concerned about issues of the youth and the elderly.

After graduating from Lawrence High School, she attended the Gordon Phillips Beauty School in Lawrence, where she studied the arts of hair-styling and makeup. Her experience in numerous salons helped her understand the connection between beauty and culture.

In 2010, she started her own cosmetics line called Nadege Cosmetics, sold online. Myrtha continues to use her voice to inspire women around the Tri-State area, via video conferences and a growing social media platform. In 2015, she self-published her first novel titled "The Black Lily--The Frame," Myrtha has written other books including a short story, “The Loose Pearl” and her Highly Anticipated “Dearsis Journal” which are all available on Amazon.

In her 28 year career, Mrs. Burke has dedicated her life to ensuring the safety and stability of youth and families in New Jersey since 1995. This work led her to volunteering in 2011 as a Logistics Coordinator for the Trenton African American Pride Festival. In 2013, upon the resignation of the festival’s founder LA Parker, Mrs. Burke was voted to become the next Executive Director. In 2014, Mrs. Burke became CEO of the Trenton African American Cultural Festival. After much deliberation and support by the team and numerous community partners, Mrs. Burke decided to change the name to the African American Cultural Collaborative of Mercer County and change the organization's status to a not for profit.

On June 19, 2017 (YES Juneteenth) the African American Cultural Collaborative status changed to not for profit with programming offered to the Trenton and Mercer County Community. In a few years the organization has increased its events from 1 month out of the year to 10 months. The progress is due to the time and commitment of a dedicated Executive Board, Advisors, partnerships and a host of volunteers!

The African American Cultural Collaborative Team works year round to ensure that all programming is at no cost to attendees. As a result, since 2014, the Collaborative has raised in the six figures to fulfill their mission of education and empowerment through arts, culture, entertainment, health and wellness and sports.

Latarsha is a proud Board member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and the New Jersey Black Women’s Coalition.

Baye Kemit is a committed educator who has dedicated his life towards the education of Black children. Born to John and Janice Caldwell, Baye grew up in Trenton, NJ’s Wilbur Section and attended Trenton Public Schools, K-8 (P. J. Hill and Junior High School #2). He attended and graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1991. He is married to Makeda Kemit, has 6 children and 2 grandchildren.

Baye sought higher education at Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, GA. It was there that Baye groomed his affinity for African history, culture and pride, hence his name change to Baye Kemit. In addition to demonstrating an intense conviction towards reclaiming his African heritage, and acquiring knowledge within his major, Baye was also a member of CAU’s Student Government Association and a member of the Forensics Society Debate team. He graduated in 1996 with a degree in History Education, and, in 2002, Baye received his Master’s degree in Education Administration from Temple University. Through his matriculation at Clark Atlanta and Temple University, Baye was thoroughly prepared to achieve his lifelong goal: to educate African American children from an African cultural perspective.

In 2003, Baye founded The Garvey School, an independent African-centered high school and, in 2007, expanded the institution to include Egun Omode Shule (children of the ancestor’s school), which was preschool to 8 th grade. Baye and Makeda are homeschool parents. The Garvey School/Egun Omode Shule was the only fully comprehensive (K-12) African-centered school in the state of NJ. In 2010, they expanded again to include Watoto Village, a full-time daycare. Also in 2010, Egun Omode Performing Arts Collective, a children’s West African dance and drum company, was founded. In 2012, Egun Omode premiered its first of 6 productions, which have toured from New York City to Atlanta with show dates in Newark, Philadelphia, DC, and Richmond.

Baye’s family relocated to Atlanta in 2018, closing The Garvey School and dedicating his time to developing Egun Omode and his children’s respective careers. Atlanta has provided his children with the opportunity to act professionally, perform in music videos, and build a sociocultural network that Trenton could not provide.

Baye has been lauded for his professional accomplishments, none more personal than the Dorothy V. Palmer award for “Excellence in Education” named in honor of Mayor Douglass H.
Palmer’s mother. In 2015, he was awarded the “Educators Award” by the Trenton branch of the NAACP, amongst numerous other professional and community awards.

Baye is the current National Facilitator of the Council of Independent Black Institutions (CIBI) founded in 1972, a national consortium of Independent Black Institutions (IBI), manager of Egun Omode Performing Arts Collective, an educational consultant, an initiated priest of Ifa (Babalawo), and a registered farmer in the state of Georgia. His special love lies in his annual group tours to Ghana, West Africa (Sankofa Exports and Tours) and his annual HBCU college tours which he started in 1999.

Baye spends most of his spare time homeschooling, being creative with his family, maintaining his livestock, drumming, and driving his 1973 Volkswagen Beetle.

Tona recognized at a young age that she loved helping people. She began assisting the Trenton community by taking on many endeavors. The theme of community empowerment is echoed throughout all of Tona’s work. She recently finished composing her 2nd documentary, “ENOUGH” part 2 of “Why We Didn’t Tell,” a narrative about African American sexual assault survivors. Tona reached the realization that she is a smaller piece of a large puzzle in the undisclosed issue of sexual abuse in the African American community.

Tona feels a calling and responsibility to educate the public about this ever-present, yet under recognized issue. In 2018, Tona organized Trenton’s First Sexual Assault Month Walk it’s been five years and the walk has grown into a worldwide virtual walk. Tona is the founder of R.O.S.A. Rising Over Sexual Abuse. This organization educates people about sexual abuse, empowers children and gives a voice to the voiceless.

Ms. Harris is a mother, survivor and advocate. She mentors women 1:1 on work-life balance and inspirational parenting while overcoming adversity and surviving domestic violence. She works tirelessly to continue in helping sister survivors reach their full potential regardless of the barriers violence presents.

Ms. Harris vows to continue her work in helping other women bridge their “From Trauma to Triumph” at Women’s HQ where a culturally specific and holistic approach is combined with evidence-based modalities. As an Agent for Change with a passion to showcase the magic and beauty of Black love for Black women everywhere, Love Strategist and Relationship Expert, Cheri Syphax, seeks to demystify the stereotype that Black women cannot have it all, especially regarding relationships, and do it with style, class, and grace.

During his kaleidoscopic quarter-century as a professional jazz musician, pianist Orrin Evans has become the model of a fiercely independent artist who pushes the envelope in all directions. Evans upholds that reputation on his 20th album, Magic of Now (Smoke Sessions), on which he helms a multi-generational A-list quartet through an eight-piece program that exemplifies state-of-the-art modern jazz. From first note to last, the members, convening as a unit for the first time, display the cohesion and creative confidence of old friends, mirroring the leader’s predisposition for finding beauty in the heat of the moment.

Although he’s never had the support of a major label, Evans has ascended to top-of-the-pyramid stature on his instrument, as affirmed by a #1-ranking as “Rising Star Pianist” in the 2018 DownBeat Critics Poll. Grammy nominations for the Smoke Sessions albums The Intangible Between and Presence, by Evans’ raucous, risk-friendly Captain Black Big Band, cement his bona fides as a bandleader and composer.

Evans bedrocks his speculative sensibility with virtuoso command of the piano and deep assimilation of the fundamentals. A deft tune deconstructor, he commands vocabulary across a broad timeline of swinging, blues-infused hardcore jazz and spiritual jazz/avant garde jazz dialects, as well as the Euro-canon, and conveys his stories with the intuitive spontaneity of an ear player. He projects an instantly recognizable sound, sometimes creating flowing rubato tone poems, sometimes embodying the notion that the piano comprises 88 tuned drums.

Evans’ stylistically polyglot compositions – influenced by the expansive, individuality-first Black Music culture of his native Philadelphia and by a decade playing Charles Mingus’ beyond-category music in the Mingus Big Band – similarly postulate an environment of “structured freedom” that instigates the personnel to push the envelope in all his multifarious leader and collaborative projects. These include the Eubanks Evans Experience (a recent venture with eminent guitarist Kevin Eubanks); the just-formed Brazilian unit Terreno Comum; Evans’ working trio with bassist Luques Curtis and drummer Mark Whitfield; Jr.; and Tar Baby (a collective trio of 20 years standing with bassist Eric Revis and drummer Nasheet Waits).

One of Tar Baby’s two 2022 releases will be released on Evans’ imprint, Imani Records, which he founded in 2001 and relaunched in 2018.

An influential educator, Evans is devoted to passing the torch to new generations. His students include the outstanding young alto saxophonist and Blue Note artist Immanuel Wilkins, and the prodigious, Grammy-nominated teenage pianist Brandon Goldberg.

In 2000, Ms. Harris sounded the alarm about environmental justice. As a guest speaker during a White House News Briefing in December 2000, she spoke forcefully about how Improving Air Quality impacts children in low-poverty communities in America, along with then Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Carol Browner, and President Bill Clinton’s Chief of Staff, John Podesta.

In 2016, Ms. Harris was selected to attend the White House Summit on The United State of Women for President Barack Obama’s administration where she advocated for a whole-of-government approach to her key issues.

Her approach also recognizes the need for a whole-of-society reckoning with immigration practices that continue to allow harm. She has traveled to El Paso Texas to help serve in the community of Hispanic and Latino immigrants and has studied the impacts immigration has on Hispanic women and children.

Ms. Harris received her Bachelor of Arts in Management from The Catholic University of America, and has her Executive Masters in Leadership from Georgetown University.

Cathryn was a recipient of the New Pittsburgh Courier Fab 40 under 40 award in 2019 for her work in the community and the 2022 recipient of the Ladies Who Lead award presented by the Professional Women’s Network. She currently sits on the Board of Directors with the Point Park Alumni Association as Co-Chair of the DEI Committee and is Chair of the Health and Wellness Committee with the Urban League Young Professionals. Cathryn is also CEO of Constantly Creating, LLC, a business she has created that is dedicated to serving the community especially the youth with educational programming, workshops, music, and dance.

Cathryn is an active Zumba Fitness Instructor who teaches both adults and children the fundamentals of staying fit while having fun through dance. She is a body positive advocate who believes that fitness has no size and continues to share her passion for health and wellness by offering free fitness classes for the community, wellness check-ins, and loves being an accountability partner to all her clients and friends. It does take a village in fostering the education of our children.

I hold a Master’s Degree in Psychology, which allows me be able to connect with parents and athletic students who are entering into college and what to expect, along with dealing the separation of the parents and their son and or daughter. The goal is to see our clients leave high school with a fully executable plan to graduate college, post-secondary school, military or entering the real world for the first time. Whichever journey path is chosen will be a rewarding for the graduate.

She began her role as a caregiver approximately three years ago for mom and her handicapped older sister-who she had to relocate from WV to New Jersey. Tonjua is an advocate for those who care for their loved ones with an emphasis for those caring for loved ones with Dementia/Alzheimer. In her new journey of being an advocate for caregivers she will be offering emotional support resources and providing resources as it relates to this very serious topic. As she has also discovered the importance of taking care of self as well she has since found a support group called "The Binti Circle" (black daughters caring for mothers) and has recently participated in a research study called “Caregiving While Black” supported by the Emory Nursing College.

As she continue on the path of this new journey her goal is bring the role of caregiving more to the forefront - by speaking about it, writing about it and sharing resources that can help and support others struggling in the role of what to do next.

Reed Gusciora (born March 27, 1960) was sworn in as the 47th mayor of the City of Trenton on July 1st, 2018. Prior to becoming Mayor, he served in the New Jersey General Assembly for twenty-two years representing the 15th Legislative District, which includes portions of Mercer and Hunterdon Counties.

In the Assembly, Gusciora was Deputy Majority Leader and, over the course of his tenure, served as Chair of the Assembly Commerce and Economic Development, Environment and Solid Waste, and Regulatory Oversight Committees. Some of his legislative achievements included the NJ Smoke-Free Act, banning smoking in bars and restaurants; allowing the sale and use of medical marijuana; the "Senior Gold Prescription Discount Act," which expanded the state’s prescription drug program for seniors; the law to streamline disability services through government agencies; and the expansion of the State’s recycling law to include electronic waste.

In 2014, Gusciora organized opposition to Governor Chris Christie’s cancelation of the $150 million project to build a new Trenton High School. Through the Assemblyman’s efforts, the Governor reversed course and put the project back on track. Gusciora previously fought the State’s School’s Development Authority when it was discovered Trenton’s MLK elementary school was being constructed over hazardous materials dumped by contractors. Later, he made national news when Governor Christie called Gusciora “numbnuts” after vetoing the Assemblyman’s marriage equality bill. Gusciora objected to the Governor’s claim that the act would be too much of a social change and should be left to the voters.

Mayor Gusciora received a B.A. from The Catholic University of America in International Relations and was awarded a J.D. from the Seton Hall University of Law. Gusciora also worked as a congressional aide to the late Mike Synar (OK); a campaign aide to former Princeton mayor, Barbara Boggs Sigmund; and an attorney at Stark and Stark. In 2007, Gusciora was appointed Assistant Prosecutor for the City of Trenton. He then served as municipal prosecutor in Princeton, Lawrence Township and Hopewell Borough. Gusciora was also an adjunct political science professor at The College of New Jersey.

As Mayor, Gusciora worked with Governor Phil Murphy’s Administration for the return of Capital City Aid. He has overseen the revamping of the Trenton Water Works Department and navigating the utility from frequent water quality violations assessed by the State’s Department of Environmental Protection. Gusciora has also consistently promoted economic development and advocates for new housing in the Capital City’s downtown. The mayor was accepted into the 2019-2020 Bloomberg Harvard Cities Leadership Initiative program along with 40 other mayors from around the world. Mayor Gusciora serves on the Steering Committee for the Mayors Innovation Project at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

He is a board member for Mercer County ARC, a developmentally disability advocacy group; Regional Vice Chair of the New Jersey Urban Mayor’s Association; and a Member on the Steering Committee of the NJ League of Municipalities.

Dwaine Williamson, Esq. is an attorney at law and most recently completed his term as an elected Councilman in Princeton, NJ. Born on the Caribbean island of Jamaica, he immigrated to Trenton, New Jersey with his mother and four older brothers. After graduating from Trenton Central High School in 1989, he attended Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service in Washington, D.C. where in 1993 he received his Bachelor of Science degree in International Politics. He became a naturalized United States citizen in 1994.

After working several years in the investment business at Merrill Lynch and Salomon Smith Barney, and being an eye-witness to the horrors of 9/11, while working in Manhattan, he attended Rutgers University's School of Law in Newark, New Jersey, where he earned his Juris Doctor degree in 2007. Mr. Williamson moved to Princeton Township, NJ in July of 1998. In 2022, he decided to move back to the City of Trenton.

He and his wife Trina Williamson who is an elementary school teacher in the Trenton Public School district, have three children, all Princeton High School graduates: Dwaine II, an honors graduate of Rutgers University and reserve Captain in the United States Marine Corps and Phoenix and Raina, both college students.

Mr. Williamson dedicates much of his time to the socioeconomic revitalization of Trenton through his 501(c)3 not-for-profit The New Trenton Movement and his investment company Andromeda Associates.

KJ’s indirect path to his current position (Senior Content Producer for MotorTrend’s Truck Group) was forged by working with cars, trucks, motorcycles, etc., as a hands-on enthusiast (late-model Ford Mustang expert, engine builder, mechanic, hot-rodder, etc.) and motorsports fan and participant (an avid drag racer) for more than four decades.

After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree (Communications) from the University of Pittsburgh in 1985, KJ’s career in journalism began with editorial positions at CBS News in New York (Radio and Television), and then as a Newsroom Editor, Corporate Communications Specialist, and Program Manager for the Prodigy online service.

Hoping to transition his career by gaining employment in the automotive industry, KJ moved from New York to Southern California in 1997 and landed his “foot-in-the-door” car job in the Service Department at Galpin Lincoln Mercury in North Hills. Two years later, he moved on to the Service Department at Century West BMW in Universal City.

In June of 2000, KJ left the dealership world and joined the New Vehicle Data team at Edmunds.com. While working for Edmunds Data, he also penned freelance tech and feature articles about late-model Mustangs, for Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords magazine (McMullen Argus). After leaving Edmunds.com in 2005, he accepted a full-time position as Technical Editor for 5.0 Mustang and Super Fords magazine (Primedia).

KJ’s tenure at 5.0 ran from 2005 until the magazine’s closure in 2014, and during that time he earned promotions to Senior Technical Editor, and Editor. While at 5.0, he also received the 2013 SEMA Motorsports Parts Manufacturers Council’s (MPMC) Robert E. Petersen Media Person of the Year Award.

In June of 2014, KJ was named Editor-in-Chief of Diesel Power magazine (MotorTrend Group), a position he held until the print publication was discontinued in 2019. In December of 2019, KJ received the Outlaw Diesel Super Series’ Lifetime Achievement Award for his 40-plus years of contributions and commitment to automotive high performance and the sport of drag racing.

Since 2010, KJ has appeared as a guest on many of MotorTrend’s online and televised car/truck enthusiast and racing programs (Roadkill, Roadkill Garage, Diesel Power Challenge, Shift Talkers). And in May 2021, KJ became the co-host of Hooptie World Championship; a new automotive building/racing broadcast that airs on MotorTrend+ (online) and MotorTrend Channel (cable/satellite television).

When he’s not reading, writing, or thinking of content for MotorTrend and TruckTrend.com, KJ says he enjoys “messin’ around with stuff” in the garage or his home workshop, relaxing in his backyard with music, cigars, and cold beer on tap, "goin' drag racing" whenever time and funds permit, and spending time with his lovely wife, Crystal, and their dog Jasper.

Bruce Boyd was born and raised in Trenton, New Jersey. He is a graduate of the Trenton Public Schools and attended Mercer County Community College focusing on Computer Operations. After 30 years with the State of New Jersey, he retired to pursue his passion which is his service to youth and their families through Building Our Youth’s Development.

Based on my experiences within the Trenton Public School District, as a volunteer and President of the local chapter of a national nonprofit, Dads Are Doing Something and later as a parent liaison, I saw the need to empower at risk youth and founded the Boys of Distinction/Girls of Grace Mentoring Program. Through this unique initiative, I developed, implemented, and evaluated various programming which includes mentoring, life skills development, gang prevention, rites of passage, college tours, and various social and cultural activities.

More importantly, I was able to transfer my unique ability to engage parents to this initiative. Through the Boys of Distinction/Girls of Grace Mentoring Program, I was able to establish a rapport of great trust and respect with youth participants and their families. What makes this initiative truly special is its focus on positive self-images and a participant dress code.

Under Building Our Youth’s Development affectionately known as B.O.Y.D., I developed four programs that engage parents and students. Drumming To A Different Beat~ An African American Male Initiative, Girls of Grace~ An African American Female Initiative, The Upperclassmen~ A program designed for young men in 11th and 12th grades, and I Am Daddy’s Little Girl~ An eight-week course on connecting fathers and daughters. These programs were designed to provide solutions to the disparaging statistics facing our nation.

Mr. Boyd was the 2006 recipient of the State of New Jersey Martin Luther King Jr. Commission Drum Major for Youth Impact Award, recipient of the Governor’s Jefferson Award for Community Service, 2021 Lawrence Public School District Trailblazer Award for Black History Month, Humanitarian Award from The Kidsbridge Tolerance Center and honored and saluted by the Trenton Education Association during their “Evening of Success”, Honoring Friends of Education for his outstanding contributions to education, as well as his meritorious history of service to the community.

Moses Jarta (jar’tah) Flomo (flow’mo) - current pastor of African and Saint Mary Street United Methodist Churches of the Greater New Jersey Annual Conference, United Methodist Church - hails from the Republic of Liberia, West Africa, where (beginning in 1986) he served several congregations in the Liberia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church for ten years including Community United Methodist Church in Gbarnga (barn’gah), William Pitman Kennedy United Methodist Church in Voinjama (Vohn’jah’mah), and David G. Gueh United Methodist Church in Monrovia. During his tenure at William Pitman Kennedy United Methodist Church (this was the only United Methodist congregation in Lofa County), a school was built (still fully functioning) and the foundation laid (established many preaching points that eventually became full congregations) for what is now the Voinjama District of the Liberia Annual Conference. Many young men and women who are currently serving the Church as ordained ministers and lay-persons were also encouraged, influenced, and motivated to follow their own calls to ministry through his guidance and leadership.

Claimed by God at the tender age of fifteen, he accepted God’s call to ordained ministry - having tried to no avail to ignore God’s call in order to pursue studies and career in Electrical Engineering. He studied at the Gbarnga School of Theology - a United Methodist Seminary in Gbarnga, Liberia, where he earned a Diploma in Theology (Master of Divinity equivalence) and Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D. C., where he earned the Master of Theological Studies degree in Biblical Studies. He is presently enrolled in the Doctor of Ministry Degree Program at Wesley Theological Seminary. He has also served several congregations in the Greater New Jersey Annual Conference since 1996 - including Irvington UMC (Irvington), Franklin-St. John’s (Newark - Associate), Park Avenue-St. John (East Orange), and Bethany Browne (Jersey City).

He believes in honoring God with his life by striving "to live above reproach", doing the works of mercy, justice, and peace - "doing no harm", "doing good" to all people, and "attending upon the ordinance of God.” Subscribing to the Scripture’s affirmation of “the priesthood of all believers”, he believes that ministry is the work of all the people of God. Both clergy and laity are called to this priesthood. While each may assume different roles, both have the responsibility "to enter into mission and to minister and witness in the name of Jesus Christ, the Head of the Church." The ministry of Jesus Christ is, therefore, the ministry of all the people of God. Both clergy and lay persons are team members of the ministry team. As the various members of a team work together to bring success or victory to the team, so must the various members of the ministry team in continuing Jesus' mission. Hence, he believes in developing, equipping, resourcing, supporting, and empowering lay leadership for the work of ministry.

Pastor Flomo seeks to make a difference in the community in other ways. He volunteers as a Chaplain of the Burlington City Police Department; Coordinator of Team Builders Community Development Corporation – a 501(c)(3) community development organization; and a Founding Member and Chaplain of African Immigrant Community of America (AIMCOMA) – also a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to improving the lot of African Immigrants in the United States - among other things.

Pastor Flomo is married. He and his lovely wife Saba (sah’bah) are blessed with five children – Abraham Jarta, Corboi (coor’boy) Benedict, Nyanman (Yahn’man), Nhanmo (nahn’mo) Jarta, and Lorpu (lorr’pu) Saba – and two grand children (Obadiah and Guladiah = Gulah’deyah).

The 20 year success of the NYC based Bulldog Bikes – which blazed a trail for multicultural athletes across the country to compete and find a home in the world of BMX, and ultimately cultivated some of the hottest talent in BMX including Brad Simms (X-Games Champion); TJ Ellis and Colton Satterfield (Mountain Dew Tour champions); Shanaze Reade (World Champion); Jason Richardson (Pan-Am Champion); and Ivo Lackas (Olympic Competitor) - has led to his latest venture, Union Square Shoes. Hector Bonilla was born in New York City, and raised in the community of Harlem, the oldest of six siblings, whose parents immigrated from Puerto Rico and Cuba. He received his Bachelor and Masters Degrees from Rutgers University, and then worked in Education for over forty-six years. Initially, he began his professional career at ASPIRA of New Jersey, working with high school students in Newark and Jersey City. Later, he taught Social Studies in New Brunswick High School and the New Brunswick Adult Learning Center, and also worked as an Adjunct Instructor at Rutgers University and Fairleigh Dickinson University. He also worked as an Academic Advisor at Middlesex County College and Rutgers University.

At Rutgers, he also served as an Assistant Dean and eventually became Assistant Director of Multicultural Recruitment at the Rutgers Office of Undergraduate Admissions. During this time, he served on the Board of Directors of ASPIRA of New Jersey, the Rutgers University Paul Robeson Scholarship Committee and was a member of the Hispanic Association of Higher Education. When Mr. Bonilla left Rutgers, he returned to the Public Schools, where he worked as a Vice-Principal in Trenton and Principal in Philadelphia, Newark and Trenton, from which he retired.

In Perth Amboy, he served two years as the President of the Perth Amboy High School PTO, and later was elected to the Perth Amboy Board of Education. He was also a founding board member of the Perth Amboy Boys and Girls Club, the Perth Amboy Alliance for Community Development (PAAC), and the Academy for Urban Leadership Charter High School.

In 2008, he was asked by Wilda Diaz to be her Campaign Manager in her quest to be elected Mayor of the City of Perth Amboy. Upon her election as the first female Mayor in Perth Amboy’s history AND the first Woman of Puerto Rican descent to be elected Mayor of an American municipality, Hector Bonilla was appointed to the position of Mayor’s Aide in the City of Perth Amboy, from which he retired in January 2013.

Mr. Bonilla previously served on the Boards of Directors for the Hispanic Research and Information Center (HRIC) in Newark, and the Latino Leadership Alliance of New Jersey, and presently serves on the Boards of the Academy of Urban Leadership Charter High School and the LEAF Foundation, both in Perth Amboy and teaches History as an Adjunct Instructor for Fairleigh Dickinson University.
