The Forty-Eighth Wednesday of Twenty Twenty Four. We reach the end of our second volume of GOOD CONVERSATION. Today, we have a BIG TIME honor to host a guest who has been contributing to El Paso’s film industry by sharing and supporting the works of many aspiring and working film professionals all over Texas. His efforts are through El Paso’s Film and Creative Industries Commission, CreativELPASO, where he has been steadily rebranding and building the organization since 2017. Our guest’s journey in the film industry began in the 1980’s where he found himself in Austin, Texas and then eventually all over as he was able to scout locations and build a strong network through his career. Now, with much experience, he has been present in how the next generations of filmmakers can continue to push the artform forward. Through conferences and his direct support towards growing film platforms, he has lent an enormous hand to where our community can go. It’s an honor to host the guest of our Volume II finale because our flagship program, Midnight Sessions, is a prime example of his and CreativELPASO’s support towards the arts. However, it's a little different today as I first met him when he was already an alumni who was deep into his career. Our guest is a great representation of hard work en la Frontera. Growing up on the other side of the border in Mexico, he experienced the journey that was crossing into the states for a university education. It is a unique experience for most, but in El Paso, it's something that we see quite often with our special geography. It doesn't make the journey any easier, however. Yet immediately, he nurtured an avenue of serving others and fostering collaboration. Since his education, he's evolved this passion on an international scale. Moving his way from DC to Spain to Mexico while adjusting to changing cultures and policies fine tuned him into understanding what it means to create meaningful and long lasting collaborations across nations. Today, he oversees this for that same university that provided him so much opportunity. [The University of Texas at El Paso] And from what we get to hear in this conversation, the opportunities are STILL continuing to grow rapidly. Ranging from morning brunches, to shows at their own main venue, to closing the streets of downtown for the weekend, our guest has seen the potential, success, and even some shortcomings from producing events at such a high scale. Through these experiences, he has learned what it takes to grow a brand of such magnitude, and what comes with all of the growth. For us, it's one great night on top of another, but for the team operating this - it's many late nights of grind mode, and many days of some more of that, along with uncertainties and curveball after curveball. I've had the pleasure of meeting her through my time at UTEP, and since our first introductions, I have been able to see a LEGEND in the making! Her career, and life as a whole, have been driven through consistent values and clear cut goals and ambitions. Habits grow as you continuously enforce them, and these have led her to play a major role in our community's development. Her efforts revolve around improving the quality of life for El Pasoans. To be more specific, this journey of city development was shaped by her early contributions to our economy's development by working with prospective businesses that can bring their companies to the Sun City. This opens up employment and resources for our population thus providing us with new and growing opportunities. Her current focus is within critical infrastructure and during our episode, we learn about what a good chunk of our neighbors are experiencing due to our geography, city age, and other factors. Building and developing our city is involves a massive web of people who are all turning so many gears, and getting a chance to understand that better brought us so much more appreciation - and patience - for our city's growth. They were some of the first people we had the pleasure of meeting in the Socorro area. During that time, they were operating a smoked eats food truck called Casa del Humo. The food was delicious, of course. But it was the friendship that I was able to easily build with them that made me want to keep coming back. From their truck to their now 1-year young brick-and-mortar restaurant. Each time I had the opportunity to visit, I was able to speak more with them and learn about how they value food and the service of feeding people. I often overlook how I personally connect with food, but whenever around them, I feel a consciousness take over me and it always gives me a new appreciation for what I'm choosing to put in my belly. Their understanding of what they do and how they go about living their lives is especially translated to the experiences they provide for all of their guests. Opportunities have risen in the ATX, and he ventures out there to regroup with the other half of the psychedelic duo. Having seen two examples of music communities, we were able to see how a music show in El Paso stacks up against one in Austin. Aside from how the two cities compare, we also dive into the duality of moving towards something while simultaneously leaving away from something else. Leaving your hometown not only allows you to venture off into new aspects of life, but it gives you the chance to shed off some metaphorical dead weight. Our guest, our boy, has been seizing this with full force. It's inspiring to see a friend of yours reach an achievement that truly takes a lot of personal discipline. In order to have reached this point, plenty of changes had to have been made in the lifestyle, and it was an honor to hear all about it. The Twenty-Fifth Wednesday of Twenty Twenty-Four. Another week, another GOOD conversation at the MFHQ. Today, our guest helps us understand more about the world of broadcasting. Recently reaching the 5-year mark with CBS 4, she has experienced a variety of roles in and around the station allowing her to sharpen the sword and become well-rounded with breaking the news. We dive deeper into the role of reporting the facts to your audience, and how emotion may or may not carry across that report. She tells the stories of her home, which can make an unbiased approach quite the challenge. But, with her commitment to the craft and willingness to study and see where she can improve has resulted in an ability to keep steady when reporting even the hardest of news. Our first collective experience with our guest was sometime during university which had to have easily been about 7 or 8 years ago. Yours truly, the boy, was on the other end of the interview that time around, but David and her had been working on a film project for class. Throughout this career, she's explored different roles, became closer to her city, and was also introduced to glaring differences between the treatment of men and women in the industry. With her experiences, there became a drive to address and change these gender differences. What first started as a risk has now grown into a community-driven organization towards women empowerment. She founded Mija, Yes You Can in 2020 and has made it her mission to educate and remind women of all colors and all backgrounds that an equal world is possible. Her efforts through her nonprofit and her time on air have made her a recognizable face and important leader of our community. The organization is highly active, so there are plenty of chances to see and support the mission, but you can even catch her hosting the morning show over on 93.1KISSFM. Here we are on another Wednesday. We’re back with more GOOD conversation with some LEGENDS ONLY in the building. You know what it is: Live! At MFHQ. This week, we step into a profession that we haven’t discussed just yet on the program: Theater. Although we are mostly unfamiliar, our guest is a seasoned vet of the game. He’s experienced several opportunities outside of El Paso that have shown him how theater operates in the big cities. But where his impact is greatest, is his contribution to El Paso’s theater. Our guest created The El Paso 24-Hour Play Festival which challenges the creativity and resourcefulness of a director and theater production team. He has also founded Teatro Neplanta, which he refers to as El Paso’s newest professional theater. I’ve only been able to spend time with our guest on two occasions: when I met him at his play, and this episode. Each time, I feel invited and welcomed to learn all about the ins and outs of theater. His knowledge and confidence of the profession bleed onto you and make you feel more understanding of the power behind theater. One of the strongest things our guest reflects on during the episode is his mission to challenge his audience to think and feel in ways that they are unsure about. To put your audience in the driver seat, and to let them decide their emotions, is to provide someone with power and belonging. Not many people are aware when they have that ability. We've arrived at our favorite day of the week. Wednesday. Meaning we had another opportunity to share GOOD conversation with another legend. This week, we brought over someone who I had heard plenty about before getting the chance to meet him for the first time. The big crown jewel was even on his bio: Two-Time Latin Grammy Nominated. It's easy to be starstruck by achievements like that here in El Paso, but upon meeting our guest... I was beginning to think... well yeah obviously. The work ethic, the quality, and the character are all three important components of someone's likelihood to succeed. Usually, we see where someone can greatly improve. Now, I won't say our guest has nowhere to improve cause he'll even disagree, but it's hard to pinpoint where exactly his weak point is out of those three. He's become an eternal student of the game, allowing him to set ego aside when creating with the vast world of musicians. He has simultaneously worked with who he considers the Jordans of his profession, allowing him to learn under the best. He has been surrounded by endless family, peers, and teachers who have given him the opportunity to be challenged and inspired into being the most human he can be. Wednesdays, look no further. You know where we at each time. Live! at MFHQ! Nothing different, legends only in the building! This week, we got an icon that I had the chance to meet with outside of El Paso. I discovered his work through another one of our guests, which demonstrates the good side to social media. Had it not been with our other guest, it would have only been a short matter of time before I discovered his artwork elsewhere. A black and gray specialist, he is a tattoo artist who discovered his craft through curiosity, trial, and error. Learning under the likes of Eric Ward, he quickly developed his skill with the needle, and found himself in the wonderful San Diego, California. Not wasting any time, he has been steadily growing out there over the last half decade, having had to rebuild his clientele from the ground up upon arriving. A challenge for him, however, is an opportunity for achievement, and along with growing his business away from his hometown, he has had the opportunity to refine his habits and lifestyle to better suit him for success as a human. It was a pleasure to hear more about him, as our first encounter was primarily occupied by 4 hours of intense tattooing. Throughout the course of our conversation, I realized and couldn't ignore that I believe him to be not only a positive representation of a tattoo artist, but a creative professional as a whole. Wednesday’s here.. in fact.. the TENTH Wednesday is here. That means our TENTH episode here at the HQ! And what do you know.. another legend. This week, we were fortunate enough to sit with another one of our guests from our flagship program, Midnight Sessions. She found her love for music early on, learning much during her youth through the form of it, and steadily developed her voice to be the impact that it is today. Oddly enough, she is simultaneously bouncing back from a brief hiatus that put her songwriting on pause. Through reflection and other creative writing, she has been able to traverse through this time and find herself on the other end a more prepared and refined artist. We learned how you can still develop your artistic career without being in the thick of it and how a setback is only a setback if you let it become one. Otherwise, it’s a small launching pad for you to leap off of into bigger worlds. This absolutely rings true in this case. This one resonates big time, as Emmeff Pearl is also an organization centered around music, film, and photography. However, getting to listen in from one of the head producers out of the powerhouse LFDC Studios was an opportunity to learn all about the world that we ourselves are steadily getting deeper within. The vast spectrum of projects that he has produced and created content for are a testament to the time he has taken to sharpening his sword and strengthening his technical ability behind the camera. All stemming from a simple little curiosity (all thanks to Mid-2010's sneaker culture), his career has blossomed into an endless stream of creativity and possibility, and has become a blueprint for what a Sun City Content Creator can become. You see Wednesday on your calendar, and you know what the drill is.. another episode of LIVE! at MFHQ! — This time around, we invited over a good friend of ours whom we met way way back through one of our earliest seasons of Midnight! The LEGEND herself, A. BILLI FREE. Representing the Southwest by way of the Midwest, Billi has discovered and built a unique sound that blends her earliest influences of young adulthood in Chicago with her ever growing endeavors of the border as a veteran within the music space. Naturally, her journey through music has evolved. Supernaturally, her mission within music has superseded it’s foundation and has become driven by community as she has been able to use her experience to help universally exchange hip-hop and culture across the world through her recent years. A career such as this doesn’t happen overnight, so we’ve always been curious to know just how she manages to accomplish so much in what seems like no time at all! Luckily, A. Billi was kind enough to sit and share with us some of the first things she learned as a musician, how she manages to continue to expand her entire portfolio while remaining in control of her work, and what it takes to be so connected with the world as a musician in today’s day and age. It was an honor to be able to have this convo, and we’re even more grateful to have the opportunity to share it with you all. Oh would you look at that.... it's WEDNESDAY, gang. That means we're sitting down with, you guessed it, ANOTHER LEGEND. This time around, we had a very special friend of ours come through to the studio to discuss her journey thus far, Jovy Castillo! Through the last 10 years, and even further back, depending on how you like to look at it, Jovy has carver her lane from scratch within the health and wellness space of El Paso, Texas. Finding her love for fitness early on, she quickly received opportunities to help others on their road to a healthier life. Of course, over that span, we all would face challenges, successes and everything in between, and Jovy is no different. However, through those peaks and valleys of her career, she has found herself receiving her Bachelor's in Kinesiology and Performance Psychology, launching her very own fitness apparel line, and even providing the Sun City with free bootcamps to kickstart your fitness all across town. By no means was it easy, and Jovy is quick to be honest about it. We can't appreciate her enough for coming through and sharing insight within her career and passion of health and wellness.
