In 1956, Barbara and Patricia Grimes vanished after seeing an Elvis Presley film in Chicago. Their disappearance generated so much national attention that Elvis Presley himself recorded a personal radio message urging the girls to come home. Their bodies were found weeks later in unincorporated Cook County. Nearly 70 years later the case remains unsolved — but may not be unsolvable.

In this episode of Detective Story, retired CPD Homicide Detective Mike Hammond and co-host Chris Kafcas sit down with documentarian and researcher Michael Weber, who has spent years investigating the Grimes Sisters case. Weber has identified a living individual — now in his 80s — who she believes had direct contact with the sisters and has never been formally interviewed by investigators.

Mike Hammond brings his own firsthand knowledge to this conversation, having worked the Grimes Sisters case as part of CPD's Cold Case Homicide Unit with his then partner Jim Hennigan. 

Together, Hammond, Kafcas, and Weber lay out the evidence, the witnesses, unanswered questions in the investigation, and the question that the Grimes family — including a surviving sister — still deserves an answer to after nearly seven decades.

Justice has no expiration date.

In this special audio edition, I reflect on the recent losses of two dedicated officers: Deputy Rick Coyle of the Crittenden County Sheriff’s Department (retired CPD) and Officer John Bartholomew of the Chicago Police Department.

I served with Rick on the Chicago Police Department years ago.  After he retired Rick moved to Kentucky and eventually joined the Crittenden County Sheriff's Department to serve that community.   On Friday May 8, 2026,  I traveled to Kentucky to attend his memorial.  At the same time back in Chicago services were being held for Officer John Bartholomew who had also been killed in the line of duty. 

This episode discusses the powerful impact both men had on their communities and my thoughts on the differences and similarities of the big-city and small-town loss, and the "instinctual awareness" that defines the best in this profession.

This is a tribute to the reality of the sacrifice, the pride of the uniform, and the weight carried long after the stars are put away.

www.detectivestory.net.       Friend to the show, Lisette Guillen, joins us to discuss the very troubling cases of Ja'Niyah MicMichael and Emma Baum. Both young women, Ja'Niyah is 13 years of age and Emma 25, have been reported missing and both are reported to be pregnant.   Emma was 9 months pregnant and beginning to dilate at the time she was last seen or heard from on October 10th, 2024 where she was reported to have been at her boyfriend's residence in Gary, Indiana.  

Ja"Niyah McMichael, 13 was reported missing on August 11, 2024 but some family members report that she may have been gone since school ended in June of 2024. She is also reported by family to have been pregnant at the time she was last heard from.  The circumstances surrounding the disappearance of both women are suspicious and time is critical in discovery their whereabouts and possible evidence. Neither women have been heard from or show any activity since their last contact and the incidents took place approximately a mile from each other.

In Episode #16, PART 2  of Detective Story, we invite you to join Mike Hammond, Chris Kafcas,  Bob Rodriguez and Elizabeth Veloz' family to discuss the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of Elizabeth Veloz.  We visit some of the key locations in the investigation and are pleased to let you hear from Elizabeth's daughter, sisters and niece. 

On the night of 26 July 1992, 27 year old East Side of Chicago native, Elizabeth Veloz, went out with friends. She left a bar with three men very late into the morning.  Reports of their travels are unclear and the three men have been inconsistent in their accounts. What is known is Elizabeth did not make it home that night and has not been seen or heard from to this day.  The men claimed that they drove Elizabeth to a remote area of East Chicago, Indiana where she either demanded to be let out, or was forced out of the vehicle near the corners of Washington and Block streets.  

By the very next day Elizabeth's family had concerns. It was completely unlike her to stay away for any amount of time without contact.  Days, weeks, months and years passed with no word or location of Elizabeth or her body.  Her family never gave up hope, consistently calling the police and the FBI for help. In the mid 2000's an FBI agent picked up the case and reached out to the Chicago Police Department for assistance and was connected with Detective Bob "Bobby" Rodriguez of the Chicago Police Cold Case Homicide Unit.  They began to investigate the case as though it was a new caper. Detective Rodriguez has continued to work with Elizabeth's family to try and get to the truth.  

One day he was called by Elizabeth's niece asking him to come to their family home as soon as possible.  Bobby, believing the family might have gotten a call or some other break in the case, hustled to their home. What he discovered however, has left an emotional mark on him that you will clearly hear.  Elizabeth's mother, Irene Veloz, was in a hospice bed in the family den, disease racking her thin frame, she was clearly very near the end of her time.  Instead of being bitter, angry and afraid that justice and answers would allude her until the end she instead asked Bobby to hold her hand. He did, and she thanked him for his work, for not forgetting Elizabeth and for keeping the family informed.  Before he left that day Bob Rodriguez made a promise to Irene Veloz.  Irene died a few days later. That promise to Irene and the Veloz family was that, as long as he walked the earth, he would not forget Elizabeth and do everything in his power to locate her.

About Mike:
Michael Marotta is the Warriors Heart Virginia Executive Director. He is no stranger to hard work and family. Married at 19 to the love of his life Dawn, Marotta is a father of 2 sons, United States Air Force Veteran, and former Law Enforcement Officer for almost 2 decades. As a veteran law enforcement officer and USAF combat veteran, Marotta has struggled with PTSD and has unique insights into the difficulties and trauma our protectors often face. His 68th Airlift Squadron supported Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. And while serving in the San Antonio Police Department, Marotta was a patrol officer, downtown bike patrol officer, crisis negotiator, mental health officer and wellness program coordinator to name a few. Leaving his career in law enforcement was what he would describe as the hardest decision he has ever made. In honor of Memorial Day, Detective Story invites you to join Detective Hammond for the interview of Allicia Johnson Niles. On March 27th, 1976 Allicia's father, Lieutenant Junior Grade Burr N. Johnson, was shot and killed aboard his assigned ship, the USS Richard S. Edwards which was docked in Pearl Harbor.   Then a young child, Allicia was told of her father's murder.  For her, the loss caused years of years of pain, trauma and shear terror of the unnamed and unknown evil that had taken her father.  Allicia discusses her journey to recovery and ultimately the decision to pursue answers to her father's murder from the United State's Navy.

Susan Snow is the daughter of slain Los Angeles Police Department Detective Thomas C. Williams, who was ambushed and killed on October 31, 1985 when Susan was 17 years old.  She is a published author, speaker, and coach. Her book, The Other Side of the Gun-My Journey from Trauma to Resiliency, was born out of Susan’s journey through the trauma she experienced with the death of her father. She wrote it on her pathing to healing and to help others heal through her words and experiences.  She is a powerful public speaker and healing coach whose message has value for everyone.  

In this episode of Detective Story, Mrs. Snow joins Detective Hammond for a conversation about her life, her relationship with her heroic father, her family, her book and the journey that she is on to heal herself, others and to continue to honor her father's legacy.

Personal note from Mike Hammond
         
I hope you enjoy this episode and the interview with the Susan Snow. It was a privilege and an honor to have the opportunity to talk with her.  The power and importance of her journey and work was again on display here again in Chicago and in city Charlotte, North Carolina in the last few days.  As I am preparing to release this episode the Chicago Police Department family and the good citizens of the City of Chicago have been devastated by murder of a Chicago Police Officer.  Patrolman Luis Huesca was shot and killed as he returned home from his shift, still in full uniform.  Killed just two days before his 31st birthday the impact Officer Huesca had in Chicago is clear and evident in the outpouring of grief, emotion and respect in his community.

In Charlotte, four law enforcement officers were shot and killed in a single incident and four others were wounded. It is hard to imagine the loss that is being felt in that community.   A very painful reminder that our law enforcement officers quite literally put everything the have on the line for our safety.

We humbly dedicate this episode to Chicago Police Officer Luis Huesca, Agents Samuel  Poloche and William Elliott of the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections, Charlotte Police Officer Joshua Eyer,  Deputy United States Marshal Thomas Weeks and Los Angeles Police Department Detective Thomas C. Williams and their families.

Detective Hammond returns with the very personal story the murder of Vigo County Sheriff Sergeant W. Kevin Artz.   Detective Hammond talks of his relationship with his first mentor in law enforcement Deputy Michael McKissick, the closing of the innocence of his youth with his college internship and the beginning of his journey into the real world of violence.  A story that he has kept inside of his close circle of friends and family until now. I recorded this episode unscripted with few notes and in doing so I could not recall the name of a Terre Haute Police Department Detective killed in the line of duty on July 7th, 2021.   His name is Detective Greg Ferency. Forgive me Detective Ferency. Thank you for your service, I hope that you have found peace and your family will find comfort with the pride of knowing that you put their safety and the safety of your community above yourself. You honor, courage and sacrifice is a measure for us all.

On a warm summer Chicago night, June 1974 someone brutally stabbed and murdered 25-year-old Becky Breedlove in her apartment. Bubbly, cute and fun loving she was a transplant to Chicago from Mississippi in the prime of her life.  She had a young son who was staying with her parents back in Mississippi at the time she was murdered. She worked hard and loved to socialize in her neighborhood. But Chicago can be a rough place for those not familiar with it. Becky, whether she knew it or not, may have put herself in harm's way. Two of her romantic partners were married men and some of the friends she socialized with were known members of Chicago's Organized Crime.  In Episode 4 Detective Mike Hammond will walk you through the case and tell you the facts as they are known.  Maybe you can discover the key to solving this crime and finally bring closure for Becky's family after 50 years.

In a special edition of the Detective Story Podcast, Retired Chicago Police Homicide Detective Mike Hammond discusses recent events in the Chicago area during which 12 people were murdered by two separate offenders.
