Where does your help come from? And maybe the more honest question — where do you actually go for it?

Jon Reddick's "Holding On (Praise God)" declares, "I know where my help comes from," and that line sent me straight to Psalm 121. But the Psalm raised a harder question than the one it answers. Not just where help comes from, but where I actually turn first when I need it.

For me, the honest list starts with myself, then my husband, then a handful of trusted mentors and friends. None of those are bad. But there's a drift that happens, and it has a name: the slide from trusting someone to trusting IN them.

In this episode, we draw that line carefully, then head to John 6, where Jesus corrects a crowd that had quietly given Moses the credit for the manna. "It wasn't Moses who gave you the bread from heaven," He says. "My Father did." We follow the cross-references back to Exodus 16 and Psalm 78, and we find the mirror image waiting there — the people aimed their grumbling at Moses, and God said that grumbling was aimed at Him.

Moses was the conduit in both directions, and the destination in neither.

Your pastor, your mentor, your spouse — help really can come through them. But may you acknowledge the true SOURCE...the Lord who made heaven and earth.

Read John 14-16 and highlight every time Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit and make note of how He describes Him. Head over to Romans 1 and 8 (better yet, read Romans 1-8) and examine what it looks like to suppress truth and the results, and contrast that to what life in the Spirit looks like. Finally, spend some time in Galatians 5 to see what keeping in step with the Spirit looks like—what life looks like when following the Spirit's leading rather than suppressing Him. It should change your prayers, your praise, your thinking, and your life. What if we lived like we believed that the Spirit of Christ dwelled within us?

There are some songs that stay with us—not because they were tied to a moment, but because they put words to a posture of faith we keep coming back to. Even If by MercyMe is one of those songs for me. At its core, it gives voice to a tension we all know well: trusting that God is able… while also learning to remain faithful when He doesn’t act in the way we hope He will.

What happens when you change one word in the title of a classic Christmas hymn? A new perspective and a fresh reason to dive into Scripture. This week’s song, “O Come, All You Unfaithful” by Sovereign Grace Music, invites us to consider the people God included in the Christmas story—and how we are just like them.

This song flips the script on who is invited to come and see what God has done. Instead of calling the faithful to gather in celebration, it beckons the weary, the broken, and the unfaithful—the ones who feel disqualified. That single word change in the title opens the door for us to explore the heart of God revealed in Scripture: a God who draws near to the weak and the waiting, the guilty and the hiding, and offers hope through Christ’s birth.

In this week’s episode of More Than a Song, I explore Melanie Penn’s powerful track “Man On The Middle Cross,” a song sung from the perspective of that repentant criminal. His story—one of mockery turned to mourning, and ultimately to mercy—invites us to reflect deeply on the grace of salvation. Join me as we dive into Luke’s Gospel and uncover the beauty of redemption through the eyes of a man who received eternal life in his final moments.

Consider that the repentant criminal on the cross was a real person with a genuine experience of Christ and is truly in paradise with our Savior to this day. After years in the Broadway scene, Melanie transitioned to songwriting and started a collaboration with Nashville producer Ben Shive. Melanie is also a worship leader and, for many years, served at Redeemer Presbyterian Church under the leadership of author and theologian Tim Keller. She has been called "a New York songwriter in the age of skepticism."

This week, I’m celebrating the first birthday of my novel, A Seat at the Table. Just as the songs I feature each week point readers back to Scripture, I wrote my book to do the same. Joy’s story may be fictional, but the truths she wrestles with are very real. Together, let’s use elements of her journey to launch us into Scripture as we consider the authority of God’s Word and how we can apply it to our lives.

In this episode, we dive into David’s story in 1 Chronicles. At first, David relies on his mighty men for advice on moving the Ark of the Covenant—but he doesn’t consult God’s Word. The result is tragic. Later, David pauses, goes back to the Scriptures, and discovers God’s clear instructions. His course correction reminds us that our good intentions aren’t enough—we need God’s truth to guide us.

Read Genesis 1-3, making note of details that may hint at Adam and God’s “history” and relationship with one another. How do those details inform how Adam responded with the first mention of fear in the Bible? Read 1 John — the whole letter — and then focus in on 1 John 4 where John teaches us that perfect love casts out fear. As you meditate on Scripture, seek to answer these questions: What is the source of perfect love? Is it possible for our love to be perfected? Then note what areas of your life are riddled with fear and ask God to open the eyes of your heart (not just your mind) to the perfect love He offers.

Read Romans 9-11. I recommend reading it several times in various translations. For example, the phrasing “God’s way” vs. “their own way” is found in the New Living Translation, and I may have missed it in the ESV or CSB, which I often read and study. Look closely at the characteristics of the people and God’s ways. Consider big picture ideas here and how you might be able to identify the same errors in your own life. Ask God to reveal to you ways that you are clinging to that do not reflect His ways.

Have you ever been in a wilderness season for an extended period of time? I’m in one now, and Jamie MacDonald’s song Desperate resonated deeply with me. When we explore the stories of desperate people in Scripture, we find that God consistently shows up in powerful ways. This week, we follow the example of one such person—the Shunammite woman in 2 Kings—and discover how faith-fueled contentment can coexist with crisis.

Key Points

• Desperation comes in many forms. Scripture reveals both positive and negative responses to desperation—such as the woman with the issue of blood versus Esau trading his birthright for a bowl of stew.
• Faith-fueled contentment is not denial. The Shunammite woman’s “all is well” was not a pep talk—it was a declaration rooted in deep faith.
• Desperation doesn’t have to drive you from God—it can drive you to Him. In her moment of crisis, the Shunammite woman didn’t send word—she went to the prophet herself and clung to his feet.
• Unmet desires don’t negate contentment. Even though she didn’t ask for a son, the longing was still there—and God met it. But when the promise seemed lost, she chose action rooted in belief.
• Observing biblical narrative carefully leads to powerful insight. Repetition, character details, and implied time gaps all deepen our understanding of the text and help us engage more fully.

We often think standing unashamed for our faith means making bold, public declarations—but what if it starts in private, consistent, quiet obedience? They determined in their heart to obey God and follow His ways amid a dark and pagan culture. They stood their ground, and God blessed them in the midst of it. Read Lamentations. Read it as intended — as poetry reflecting great emotion amid great tragedy that ultimately turns toward hope in the Lord. Observe any emotions or feelings that feel familiar to you. Pattern the freedom of the author of Lamentations and journal your own crazy out. Write down all of your complaints and how you are feeling. Don’t hold back. Then, unfurl your soul to lift your eyes to Jesus and rehearse the goodness of God. Speak the truths of Lamentations. Speak the truths of other verses you know. Use the Episode Guide to help. Remember, God’s compassion is not going to run out. He isn’t saying, “You shouldn’t feel that way.” But He also doesn’t want you to rehearse lies when the truth of His steadfast love leads to hope and peace that delights your soul and brings true freedom.

We have an enemy known as the Father of Lies, so it makes sense that one of his tactics is to convince us to believe lies about ourselves AND lies about how God sees us. We combat these lies with the truth from Scripture, and Megan Woods sings about this in her song "The Truth."

This Week's Challenge

Read Psalm 37 for yourself. Read it repetitively and in various translations before interacting with it further. Once you have the Psalm firmly planted in your mind, jot down some observations. Do you see any repetitive words or phrases? Consider the contrast of what action words David uses instead of fretting. As you give over your dreams and desires to the Lord — committing wholeheartedly to His ways — incorporate the actions you uncover into your day as you meditate on this Psalm.

Our hope in the Lord is that He will draw near to us if we draw near to Him (see James 4:8). Seph Schlueter sings about drawing near to God in his song "Running Back to You." But the song made me ask, "How do we get so far from God in the first place?" We gain insight when we search Scripture to see how it happened for God's chosen people in the Old Testament.

Follow my lead and learn about Judah, Tamar, and Perez in Genesis 38. 2 Chronicles 29-31 tells much of the life of Hezekiah, but Isaiah 36-39 tells the "rest of the story." Zerubabbel, son of Shealtiel, has a major role in the rebuilding of the altar and the temple after the Babylonian deportation, and you can read all about it in chapters 3-6 of Ezra. All of these are in the lineage of Christ. It's an interesting network of people, some with sordid pasts and questionable choices, but woven into the family of Christ nonetheless. Our song says, "Through a fragile people, the Light of Life will come." He continues to use fragile people in HIS story today.

God, the Author, chose to show rather than tell us how far He would go to redeem His people. Consider the highest of highs, where Jesus came from, and the lowest of lows, where he descended to lay His head in a pile of straw. Josiah Queen sings about this in his song, "lowest of lows." This sent me to explore Scriptures that detail Jesus went to humble Himself and why.

We're going to spend some time on a letter from Paul. But don't worry. We'll swing back into the Christmas story in Matthew.

Read Matthew’s account of the birth of Christ in Matthew 1-2. Then read Paul’s letter to the Philippians and circle back to Philippians 2 to shore up your doctrine — your set of beliefs — about Christ. Meditate on what God really did, and in response, bend your knee and raise your voice in adoration for the God who traded His throne and came to earth for us — the lowest of lows.

Scripture teaches us that the "message declared by angels proved to be reliable" (Heb. 2:2). No wonder the traditional Christmas carol instructs us to "hark" -- pay attention to -- what the angels are declaring. There's no better way to celebrate a time-honored hymn like "Hark! Take this as your call to read the birth of Jesus narrative as recorded by Luke. The second (or third, or fourth) time you read through Luke 1 and 2, watch for what you learn about angels by what is shown and said in the text. Make a list of what you learn about angels. Then, head over to Hebrews 1 and 2 and compare your list to what you learn there. You’ll uncover additions to your list. And while you may not be in danger of worshipping angels, you will now know what the Bible actually says about these important — and very real — beings.

There’s a phrase I often use in my prayers for others. I pray that God will go before them, behind them, and that His hand of blessing will be on their heads. Little did I know that Leanna Crawford's song "Still Waters (Psalm 23)" would guide me to a place that beautifully depicts our Father's conduct. The enemy of our souls has many names in Scripture. One verse often attributed to him describes him as a thief. Be quick to confess your guilt, allow God to forgive your sins, and purify you from all unrighteousness. Resist the temptation to slip into shame that leads to fear, hiding, and blame. Once you recognize the enemy’s go-to schemes, they will be easier to identify in your own life.

We may misinterpret the meaning altogether, which is awful, but by doing so, we may miss out on the real, rich meaning God intended all along. When you do a quick Google search of grave robbers, you discover it's a worldwide phenomenon usually perpetrated to take and profit from valuable artifacts or personal property. Crowder’s song “Grave Robber” attributes this title to God. But not in the way we normally think of a body snatcher who digs up graves for their own economic benefit. No. Our grave robber is snatching our souls from eternal death.

 Read or listen to Joseph's story in Genesis 37-50. Read repetitively and add to your study each time. Write down your first impressions (including questions) the first time you read the narrative. The second time you read through it, jot down the chronological timeline of Joseph's life. The third time you read through it, consider any shared experiences you and Joseph may have had. Pray and ask God to reveal Himself in the midst of Joseph's story (and yours).

Have you ever re-watched a movie yet felt anxious during that scene where the obstacle seems too great to overcome? You know the end. You understand the main character overcomes that obstacle because you've watched the movie before, but it still keeps you on the edge of your seat. I've recently seen several videos online of children laying hands on siblings in prayer or praying with deep and passionate charisma. It's adorable because they are acts not normally seen in children who are more likely to swipe their friend's toy than lay hands on them in prayer. But I learned a long time ago that children are mirrors of the environment around them. When Benjamin William Hastings sings "Abandoned," he longs to mirror the complete abandon he sees in the life of Christ.
