Emanuel was born and raised in Lima, Peru, and immigrated to the U.S. in 1993, at the age of 7, to join his parents and sister. He attended school in New Jersey and graduated from Rutgers University in 2007. Emanuel was an active leader on campus, particularly as president of his class, and co-chair of the Latino Student Council. Upon graduating, he began his teaching career as a 2007 Teach for America corps members in Los Angeles, California. He later relocated back to the east coast and worked as a Target stores executive for a year before returning to the classroom in the Bronx, where he has taught social studies and english across various grade levels, and currently works at Bronx Leadership Academy. Emanuel holds a Masters in Business Administration from Boston University as well as a Masters in the Science of Teaching from Fordham University.

Emanuel also started competing in pageants in 2012, and was Mr. Gay New Jersey in 2014, as well as Mr. United States 2017. Through pageantry, he has advocated for those living with HIV/AIDS, has raised awareness about the horrors of human trafficking, and more recently advocated for the rights of immigrants, creating a scholarship fund for undocumented college-bound 12th graders.

Emanuel lives with his dog, Cherry, enjoys working out, watching movies, listening to music, and hopes to one day become an entrepreneur and media mogul.

Before joining Carolyn Dorfman Dance, Kristine worked as a teacher, particularly with Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing students with special needs and diverse-abilities in Hillside Public School District, not-for-profit community organizations, and private institutions. She has worked as a prevention educator, a school counselor, and in human resources helping to diversify the teacher workforce. As a first-generation college graduate and thought leader in higher education, La'Tonya "LT" Rease Miles, Ph.D. has been instrumental in establishing successful programs for first-gen students at both UCLA and Loyola Marymount University. In her many leadership roles, including her current role as Partnership Development Representative at ReUp Education and co-founder of My Tribe Media, she advises institutions on first-gen student experiences. She regularly champions initiatives for non-traditional adult learners and contributes to scholarly discourse on first-gen experiences. Her influence extends to the digital sphere where she has co-founded several online communities, including a national Facebook group that empowers first-generation students.

She earned a Ph.D. in American literature from UCLA; and her research interests include the hidden curriculum in higher education, narratives about the first-generation college experience, and the representation of first-generation students in popular culture. Her most recent publication explores the positive relationships between campus service workers and first-generation students; and she is the co-editor of a forthcoming book about the Black first-generation experience.

Alejandra Campoverdi is a nationally recognized women's health advocate, founder, producer, and former White House aide to President Obama. She produced and appeared in the groundbreaking PBS documentary Inheritance, founded the Latinos and BRCA Awareness Initiative in partnership with Penn Medicine's Basser Center and served as the first White House Deputy Director of Hispanic Media.

Alejandra is on the boards of Harvard's Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics, and Public Policy and the California Community Foundation. She holds a Master in Public Policy degree from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government and graduated cum laude from the University of Southern California. Alejandra's memoir, First Gen, is a story of generational inheritance, aspiration, and the true meaning of belonging.

In this episode, Sara introduces a brand new theme for the month, Defying the Norm or Defying Expectations as a First Gen.

Sara discusses the different ways that first gens may have to defy expectations or defy the norm. Growing up, we may have a list of expectations that have been placed on us. As we get older, we may choose to not subscribe to these expectations and some challenges may arise. This may look like breaking intergenerational cycles, disrupting toxic family dynamics, choosing to not go to school or delay a career, or even choosing to not have children. It can show up in different ways, but it is mostly attached to our families and/or culture. It is important to have this conversation because it may feel difficult and lonely to manage this. This is why having a Madrina in your corner is so important!

In this episode, host Sara Diaz welcomes Amina Mostafa to a new episode of The First Gen Madrina Podcast! This gives us a brand new episode for this month's theme, Mental Health as a First Gen!

Born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Jersey City, New Jersey, Amina was the first her family to be born in the United States. The daughter of Egyptian immigrants, she is the oldest of five and the first to pursue and earn a bachelor’s degree in her family. She earned her bachelor's degree in psychology from New Jersey City University, demonstrating her early commitment to the field of psychology and her desire to understand the human mind. Her academic journey continued with the pursuit of a master's degree in Clinical and Counseling Psychology from William Paterson University of New Jersey. She is a founding board member of Generation Fearless, a non-profit organization centered around supporting first-generation women navigating all stages of their lives through education and empowerment. Amina works as a higher education administrator, where she primarily focuses on supporting marginalized students, many of whom are first-generation. She is a Licensed Associate Counselor in New Jersey. She is a mother of two littles with loads of energy. And she is currently a doctoral student at Kean University’s PhD in Counseling and Supervision program.

Jeffrey is the Executive Vice President and Head of Branch Banking at PNC Bank. In his current role, Jeff is responsible for more than 2,400 branches, and nearly 16,000 employees, through PNC’s coast to coast footprint. He also serves as a Chair for PNC’s Military Advisory Council and is the Executive Sponsor of PNC’s Latino and Multicultural Employee Business Resource Group. Jeff also served the country for nine years in the U.S. Army National Guard and was deployed twice in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and has been awarded three Army Commendation Medals and New Jersey’s Distinguished Service Medal. He is passionate about giving back to the communities where he lives and works and is involved with several non-profit organizations. He is the Treasurer of the Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey, a LatinoJustice PRLDEF Board Member, and a Member of the NJCU Foundation Board and the Hudson County Community College Employer Advisory Board. Jeff is also an executive advisor to CAALE, where he and I met, and he also works with the Association of Latino Professionals for America to educate students and professionals through informative presentations hosted at New Jersey and New York universities. Jeffrey earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business management from Rutgers University and completed the CBA Executive Banking School Program at Furman University.

With over 13 years of experience in higher education, Paulaska has dedicated herself to working with students from diverse backgrounds, particularly those from low-income households. Her journey as an Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) program alum underscores her commitment to advocacy and support for students on their academic journeys. She earned her bachelor's degree in sociology with a concentration in criminal justice from William Paterson University of New Jersey. She furthered her education with a master's in administrative science from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Currently, she is pursuing a Doctor of Education with a concentration in Organizational Leadership Studies at Northeastern University.

Charles Williamson, a classically trained Opera singer who has performed in Grammy Award winning shows like the MET's Porgy & Bess, shares how his rise to this point of his success feels almost like a miracle given his humble upbringing. Because he grew up in the projects of Passaic, NJ where his childhood musical training came from church and the music program at public school, Charles often felt like an imposter when he was pursuing his undergrad then masters in music. Imagine being the wife of a Nurse during the global pandemic, going through a pregnancy, becoming a first-time mom, and then going back to work (still in a pandemic) without childcare? Well, on this page of the diary, Maia Esteves, shares how she made some courageous moves to ensure her & her family's well-being.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month so we wanted to have this open, honest and vulnerable conversation about topics that we are still told to deal with privately. At DFGJ, we believe that in sharing them publicly, we uplift each other and we know Maia's story will encourage you along your journey!
