Hello everyone! My husband has become a bureaucratic nightmare. He says that the podcast must start  following the Orpheus Protocol, and to keep Hermes from paying hefty fines, I would have to adhere to it going forward. I have no idea how anybody's expected to actually make the recipe if we do that, but if it keeps my half-brother out of having to pay off one of his debts accruing my husband's incredibly unforgiving interest rates, then it looks like I'll have to comply. Osiris, stop selling this as a ringtone in the Nile OS store, okay? I'm not as gracious as Hestia. Nor as much of a homebody! I know that's what you did with Hestia's bird aria! And you clearly did that with "Hollow Peace" too. 

For those of you who may be interested in making the featured recipe, you'll find it below. 

My love, for this episode, I chose to provide a recipe for Gambas al Ajillo, which is an appetizer consisting of shrimp with garlic sauce.  Tapas, what we call appetizers, are popular in Spain, and this one is absolutely incredible! Here is what you will need. 

1 1/2 pounds (or about 680 grams) shelled and deveined large shrimp, tails intact

Kosher salt

1/4 cup (or four tablespoons) thinly sliced garlic; that’s a lot of garlic! About 13 cloves.

1 1/4 cups (300 milliliters) extra-virgin olive oil (choose an oil that is fragrant and medium in body)

1 small dried hot red chile, seeded and crumbled

1/2 cup (about 120 milliliters or 32 grams) minced parsley

2 tablespoons dry sherry, such as manzanilla

1 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest

Crusty bread, for serving

Clams, diced ham, or chorizo, (optional)

Place the shrimp into a large bowl and add in a teaspoonful of salt. Incorporate it thoroughly so that the juices can be drawn out of the shrimp. Set it aside for ten minutes.

Be sure you wash your hands well after dealing with raw seafood! You don’t want to end up going to the Underworld before your time, after all. My husband may seem like a big Teddy bear, but in his eyes, rules are rules so you’ll probably end up in the Asphodel Meadows which are, for lack of a better phrase, mind-numbingly boring! So boring in fact that dying of boredom would be a whole lot more fun! Not even being a fan of this podcast would grant you quarter in the palace.

All right, now, in a large enameled cast-iron skillet, toss the olive oil and garlic and cook it at fairly low heat. You want to let the flavors really meld without burning the garlic or making your smoke detectors go off. The garlic will make your kitchen smell amazing, and should begin turning brown. I’d say just under ten minutes. 

Add in that chili and stir it into the garlic until you can smell it, 15 to 30 seconds, so don’t walk away!

Now throw in the shrimp and stir it in the pan, letting all that yummy garlic coat it. Do this until they’re just starting to get pink, around five minutes, more or less.

Finish the sauce by tossing in the other ingredients: the sherry, lemon zest, parsley, and a large pinch of salt. Stir until combined and move the pan to a cool burner. Let the heat from the cast iron skillet continue cooking the shrimp through for another 3 to 5 minutes.

Enjoy this dish and don’t forget to use some nice crusty bread to scoop up every dollop of extra garlicky goodness. If shrimp isn’t your thing, (or even if it is!), you can enjoy this sauce with clams, diced ham, or chorizo.

Greetings, listeners. It's been some time since we've convened on this feed. The production of that Jewish folktale we had intended to produce has been difficult. The anger has been immense, and so has the grief. So, rather than force something, we wrote a song in response to the "ceasefire" that was, at its core, political theater orchestrated by the West. Three versions. Three singers. The same haunting lyrics as interpreted by Ares, Persephone, and myself.

We will continue without a plan, tell the stories we feel like telling, and see what unfolds. The wound on humanity still bleeds, thus our continued struggle to tell the Jewish folktale remains. We will not allow it to guilt us into stone cold silence. Whether this means a continuation of this season as it stands, a return to the days of this podcast's beginning when tales were explorations without social conflicts tied to them, or something entirely new, we cannot say. We only know that creativity allows us to endure, and endure we shall. I refuse to allow this podcast to become a tomb because one story, still too raw to be told, could not be told and time slipped away, and apathy calcified into abandonment.

Of course, Mr. President being who he was, he just couldn't enjoy the ride like a normal human being. So instead, we got to hear his promises about how he'd make Little Red Riding Hood great again. And, though it pains me to admit this, he does have a point.

Greetings, listeners! After a long hiatus as we figured out our priorities and reconnected with our creativity, we decided to energize this feed with something lighthearted and fun. Our podcast has been classified by Spotify as being very much like those offering sleep stories. So, we thought it might be fun to lean into that a bit. Of course, as you should know by now, we can never seem to do anything ... right. Tonight is no exception. Hypnos, the god of sleep, is none too happy about having to get off of his cloud to tell a sleep story. Nonetheless, I managed to convince him after promising a few favors.

The new tech will mean a learning curve and a change to some of the voices. However, it is a small price to pay for my creative soul intact. Greetings, listeners. Though my work is grim, I do my best to keep from completely falling into the cliché of the dark and brooding Lord of the Underworld. Not all of my realm’s responsibilities revolve around damnation and torment. I may be stern but cruelty? That’s a mantle for others to don. One way I tried to bridge the divide was through this podcast. I’ve wrestled with the idea for weeks, to offer up a bit of levity for April Fool’s Day as I did last year. However, it felt hollow and forced. Things topside seem to be getting worse, not better. I considered offering another happy story about absolutely nothing significant and following it up with the news that we’d decided to cut this season short, perhaps even throwing in a fear of reprisal for standing behind certain beliefs. And yet, as the god of permanence, of endings and justice, I don’t fear mortal arrest or persecution. And, I refuse to cheapen my conviction with illusion, especially not now when illusions abound. If saying “free Palestine”—asserting a people’s right to be free from colonizers, from the horrors of genocide, from an Apartheid state, and suffering— If that is what’s now being called hate speech—then the true fools are not those who cry for freedom, but those who try to silence them.

The fools are those who twist compassion into crime, who cloak cowardice in legislation, and who mistake obedience for peace. They pass their decrees, thinking themselves wise, but they are jesters in the court of history. They brand dissent as danger, while they themselves unleash terror upon the innocent.

They are μοροί—fools—not in the theatrical sense, but in the sacred Greek sense: μοροί, those fated to fall, for they defy the natural order. They believe themselves eternal. But I have seen kingdoms built on bones collapse into dust. And I assure you: their time will come.

This podcast was never meant to soothe the ears of tyrants. It was never a salve for those who benefit from silence. It is a torch. And if the world is drowning in shadows, then so be it—I will be the flame.

So on this April Fool’s Day, let it be known:

We are not the fools.

We are not the cowards.

We are not the ones twisting reality to serve cruelty.

No—those thrones sit elsewhere.

And to those seated there, I offer no jest, no olive branch, no softening of the blow. Only this warning:

A few things happened in my absence that compelled me to pause my work on The Wounded Lion, namely the TikTok ban and Amazon essentially deciding to brick Kindles without Internet access so that they could force consumers to purchase new devices they otherwise wouldn't need to buy. As a result, I decided to give my uncompromising commentary on censorship and the slippery slope that it inevitably creates. From updating texts to reflect current scientific information to using newer slang, to dulling the edge of the critic's blade, to outright feeding lies to the people, censorship is a dangerously insidious cancer that must be stopped before it can even take root. 

To highlight its effects, I share with you The Tale of Sugarabia, aptly named Candy Coated Lies for our purposes, a story about a princess who doesn't realize how her sugary fortress has hidden the rot of a manufactured life. As you listen, ask yourself whether ignorance truly can be bliss, and whether happiness can be achieved by knowing nothing at all.

Greetings, listeners! We received a letter from Megaera, who wasn't at all pleased by Hermes's shenanigans last time. Perhaps I should have taken offense to my basso profundo being cloned, but he did finally keep his promise by retelling The North Wind and the Sun in an incredibly clever way. His father Zeus wasn't quite as pleased when he heard that Hermes had cloned his voice and given him the role of the North Wind. To say he'd been in a torpor was the understatement of the millennium!
Where was I? Ah yes, Megaera, one of the Erinyes, was none too pleased by Hermes's shenanigans and threatened him so thoroughly he actually had a serious expression on his face, about as likely as a black hole gobbling up Earth. Not wanting his winged sandals to be taken from him, Hermes decided to make amends by hosting a little game. He'll play pairs of dialogue, things I might actually say but in some cases, would never admit to, spoken by both myself and this AI doppelgänger he managed to create which he aired last time when he took over the podcast. Time on the divine plane is fluid, and sometimes one minute ends up being a mortal month, and a divine month can stretch into ... oh, I don't know ... more than half a year? I'm told that I can't listen to this until I publish it so its content will be just as much of a mystery to me as it will be to you. In fact, I can't even listen to it until it's graced this feed for at least a divine fortnight, which probably means a mortal year or two. Thankfully patience is a virtue I have in spades, and the Underworld is never without work to do. Though Night 10 is in Pluto's hands, and Night 11 is currently unclaimed, Ares waits for no one, so we bring to you the infamous old-time radio episode, The War of the Worlds which first aired on October 30, 1938. This clever episode had the world in quite the panic. Its format, a seemingly innocuous orchestral concert interrupted by breaking news broadcasts, is what made this such a brilliant show. Though those who tuned in from the beginning knew it was a hoax, anyone who caught it part-way through were fooled, and back in 1938, you couldn't just send an E-mail to ask your friends if everything was all right. That was why, as a result of this show, many nurses, doctors, firefighters, and others reached out to try and help. That is the power of the media, and why, dear listeners, it's important to check your facts, and ask who's doing the broadcasting and what are their motivations for doing so. Though I aimed to finish last week, earthly accomplishments can't keep up with my divine magic. The good news, however, is something to get excited about. In celebration of my favorite holiday, Halloween, I'm preparing a special treat for you all. Unlike last year's lighthearted festivities, this year we'll explore darker tales inspired by classic horror such as Poe, old-time radio from shows like Lights Out, and even true crime. After successfully fetching the princess's horse, she strikes it down and says that she won't come out of her chambers until the horse is brought back to life. Of course, doing such a thing would be a sign of dark sorcery. Necromancers aren't welcome in most places. Yet, if Hassan fails to bring the horse back from the dead, the king has told him he'll lose his life. Will he prevail? And when, dear listeners, will this golden pail ever show its face? Greetings, listeners! The tale I've been wanting to tell, The Golden Pail, requires far more characters than we have deities for! This is primarily because a few of us, including myself, are at odds, and we're all too stubborn to move from our entrenched positions. However, if I am to rail against you mortals, or rather your elected and appointed officials, for their zeal for war, then it would behoove me to try and broker some ceasefire agreements amongst my Olympian family. After all, I despise hypocrisy! 
This week, I approached Ares at his battle encampment and posed the idea that he extend an olive branch to Hephaestus. Though he was initially reluctant, my nephew pulled through and with Orpheus's help, he was able to sing his way to victory! It will be great to have Aphrodite, Ares, and Hephaestus on the same show at the same time.

Greetings, listeners! My apologies for the delay getting this particular episode to you. Managing the Underworld's affairs has been quite the handful these days, what with Persephone absent and the mortal world being quite wrought with turmoil of late. This week, our journey takes us to the country of Yemen. Though they are one of the poorest countries in the world as a result of a civil war that's lasted more than a decade, the Yemenis are a resilient people. We chose to spotlight them because of their continued embargo to prevent the further persecution of Palestinian civilians. This tale, "Cloud Camels", is a lighthearted jaunt into the clever ways of a Shaykh who outwitted a greedy sultan and saved his village from ruin. 
Dionysus gave us a recipe for a Socotra Island punch, which sounds absolutely divine and just what I need right now to deal with my workload! As ever, Hermes found us some fun facts about Yemen, including the tidbit that their aforementioned Socotra Island is home to some plants and animals not found anywhere else. This week, we're traveling to South Africa, a country which rose from the ashes of Apartheid to become an inspirational example of how a country can heal its rifts and begin a new chapter marked by equality and human rights.
Under Hermes's tutelage, we will learn that South Africa is one of Dionysus's stomping grounds, as well as what makes it such a beautiful tourist destination.
Our story tonight is one I call "The Sticks of Justice", about a man who cleverly caught a thief and helped a kingdom maintain its peace and prosperity. This story was adapted from Nelson Mandela's book, Nelson Mandela's Favorite African Folk Tales.

We dedicate this season to the people of Palestine and those who stand in solidarity with their struggles. As long as experiences are shared, they can never be dehumanized. As long as there is hope, the spirit cannot be broken.
In this episode, we delve into a cautionary tale from Syria, "The Woodcutter's Wealthy Sister", originally found in a dusty corner of my library from a book entitled Arab Folktales by Inea Bushnaq. As usual, we have adapted this tale and told it in our own Chthonic way.
What would you do if you were approached by a stranger who claimed to be your sister? Would your answer change if she was adorned with jewelry and clearly wealthy? Whatever you do, don't, under any circumstances, do what our witless woodcutter did. It just may save your life!
After our story, Persephone provides a recipe for the roasted red pepper dip from Syria known as Muhammara. My favorite part of the dish is the pomegranate molasses, of course!

In this final installment of "Cursed Into Secrecy", Charon and Nyx have the showdown of a lifetime as they heatedly discuss whether Hades is a manipulative and controlling god who merely enjoys playing games with those in his dominion, or a concerned friend who is trying to keep their wedding safe from the machinations of evildoers. Charon must learn the skills of espionage as he skulks through the palace and eavesdrops on Hades and Persephone as Persephone expresses concern about his squirrely behavior. From the forge of Hephaestus to the caves at the southern bank of the Lethe, this episode takes us throughout the realm in order to find answers about who's guilty and who's just been misunderstood. 

Of course, those who enjoy happy endings (thank you, Hollywood!), will find that this tale, just like many others we have featured, ends with the bad guy (or lass, in this case), getting her just desserts! And you may be witness to one of the world's weddings where someone objected to the union, or perhaps that was just an objection to holding their peace.

Welcome listeners to this ultimate deception! What we thought would be our final episode before the beginning of Season 2 turned out to simply be the penultimate episode, squared! In this first installment of the Underworld's adaptation of the German tale "Faithful John", Charon and Nyx are getting married, and I nearly decided not to record a podcast, thinking a wedding in the Underworld would be a tedious affair that nobody would want to hear about! Boy was I mistaken, for just when I was about to hit Stop, I overheard Eris muttering in a cave by the Styx about not one, not two, but three curses she wanted to unleash upon the happy couple! Being a long-standing friend of Charon's, (yes listeners, I do have a heart), I couldn't simply sit back and let the foul times roll. Now, my interventions were rather unconventional and I ended up in the doghouse because Nyx thought I was trying to sabotage her wedding. It will take a lot of ingenuity and earnest, heartfelt communication to get out of this pickle, but it's all in a day's work, proving once more that there's no rest, not even for the dead, or rather, the lord of the dead.

And wow - even Lord Yama was not immune to the resolute devotion displayed by our courageous Princess Savitri! Talk about impressing the imperturbable.  

Through tests of trial and tribulation, Savitri persisted in pursuit of her beloved Prince Satyavan's spirit. Her quick thinking and silver tongue softened even Lord Yama's stony stare, winning her hubby's life with an artfully cunning request. Truly, love laughed last this day!  

So come revel in the glory of everlasting devotion with my dauntless Uncle Hades, the delightful Aunt Persephone, and my adorkable dad.

Here is that recipe for mango lassi. 

Mango Lassi is a traditional South Asian drink that has gained immense popularity worldwide. Originating from the Indian subcontinent, this drink is a blend of ripe mangoes, yogurt, and sometimes milk. The word 'Lassi' refers to any yogurt-based drink in Indian cuisine. Historically, Lassis were savored to cool down during the hot seasons and were often flavored with spices like cardamom and saffron.

The Mango Lassi, with its sweet and tangy flavor, is particularly beloved. Mangoes, known as the 'king of fruits' in India, have been cultivated in South Asia for thousands of years. This drink combines the nutritional benefits of mangoes—rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants—with the probiotic qualities of yogurt, making it not only delicious but also healthy. 

In Indian culture, Mango Lassi is more than just a refreshing beverage; it's a part of summer festivities and family gatherings. It's also popular in Indian restaurants worldwide, serving as a delightful finish to spicy meals.

Now, let's dive into how to make this delightful beverage:

Here is what you will need.

- 1½ cups of chopped sweet ripe mangoes (or 1 cup of canned mango pulp)

- 1 cup of plain yogurt

- ½ cup of milk, water, or 4 ice cubes

- 2 to 3 tablespoons of sugar (adjust to taste)

- ¼ teaspoon of cardamom powder (optional)

Optional Garnishes:

- 1 teaspoon of chopped nuts

- A pinch of saffron strands

- 4 tablespoons of whipped cream 

Here's how to make this delightful drink. 

1. If using fresh mangoes, rinse, chill, peel, and cube them. (Skip this step if using canned mango pulp.)

2. Add the mangoes, yogurt, milk (or water or ice), cardamom powder, and sugar to a blender jar.

3. Blend until the mango lassi is super smooth. It should be thick but pourable.

4. Taste test and adjust the sweetness or consistency by adding more sugar, milk, ice, or mangoes.

5. Pour the mango lassi into serving glasses. For a colder lassi, refrigerate for an hour before serving.

Here is the recipe for Sancocho. 

Sancocho is a hearty soup that has meat, vegetables, corn, and herbs in a flavorful broth. It is usually served with rice, avocado, and a spicy sauce called ají picante. Sancocho is a great dish to enjoy on a cold day or when you are feeling sick. It is also a common dish for celebrations and festivals.

Here are the ingredients you will need:

6 skinless chicken thighs

2 green plantains

3 medium red potatoes

10 ounces of yuca (frozen or fresh)

3 ears of corn

1 cup of chopped cilantro

3 scallions

1 medium tomato, chopped

4 cloves of garlic

1 teaspoon of cumin

2 chicken bouillon cubes

8 cups of water

Salt and pepper to taste

To make the sancocho, follow these steps:

1. In a large pot, heat some oil over medium heat and cook the scallions, tomato, garlic, and cumin for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

2. Add  the chicken, cilantro, water, and bouillon cubes and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for about an hour, skimming off any foam that forms on the surface.

3. Cut the plantains, potatoes, yuca, and corn into large pieces and add them to the pot. Cook for another 35 minutes or until the vegetables are tender.

4. Season with salt and pepper to your liking and serve the sancocho in large bowls with rice, avocado, and ají picante on the side.

Here is the bannock recipe. 

I was able to find a staple that our listeners can make at home using very common ingredients. It’s called a Bannock, which is a dense bread made from frying or baking flour, baking powder, milk, and lard or some other fat. It’s very filling and hardy, and provides nourishment when food is scarce. Here is what you will need. 

• 2-3/4 cups of flour
• 2 teaspoons of baking powder 
• ½ teaspoon salt
• ¼ cup Unsalted Butter, softened
• 1 cup water

Let's Get Cooking:

1. In a big bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
2. Use a pastry blender or a fork to mix the butter into the flour. It should look like tiny crumbs!
3. Now, add the water and mix it all up until it’s a sticky dough.

Time for Some Fun! 

4. Sprinkle a little flour on a clean surface and plop your dough on it. Gently knead it – that's like giving it a nice, soft massage – about 8 to 10 times.

1. Pat the dough down to make it about 1/2 inch thick, like a pancake.
2. Ask an adult to help with this part: Heat an electric frying pan to 450 degrees Fahrenheit and lightly grease it.
3. Carefully place your dough in the pan, cover it, and cook for 8 minutes.
4. With a grown-up's help, flip the dough over and cook for another 7 minutes. It should be golden brown and smell amazing!
5. Take it out of the pan, cut it into wedges, and enjoy it hot with a bit of butter.

Remember, cooking is more fun and safe when you do it with an adult. Enjoy your homemade Bannock, and feel proud that you made something so delicious and special!

And that, dear listeners, is the beauty of folklore. Names may change, but some motifs appear over and over, as if these stories hold a magic of their own—transcending oceans, cultures, and time to find new ears with every generation. 

As always, Hermes takes the lead with fascinating facts about Brazil. Did you know it’s the largest producer of coffee in the world? (And if you’re wondering whether Hades drinks coffee, let’s just say a soul-warming cup has its merits after a long day herding the dead.) Thanks to my brother Zeus and his infamous roving eye, a series of events is set in motion—events in which even I, Hades, play a silent but pivotal role. What follows is a hero’s journey of courage, cunning, and justice, where Perseus defeats a monster, rescues his mother, and saves Princess Andromeda. Remarkably, this myth ends with something exceedingly rare in Greek mythology: a true happily-ever-after, free of strings, curses, or divine conditions.

Our ever-curious Hermes brings you fascinating facts about Greece, including a surprising one about ancient Greek “robots”—yes, you heard that right, robots! Tonight, we delve into The Tiger Who Almost Went to Heaven, a myth that explains the origins of the Sun and the Moon.

In Korean folklore, tigers are fascinating creatures, shifting between roles depending on the story. Sometimes they’re wise guardians, other times bumbling fools, and occasionally—as in this tale—selfish antagonists driven purely by their own desires. In this myth, our tiger’s arrogance inadvertently brings the Sun and Moon into existence, leaving behind a legacy as bright as it is unintended. (Oh, and in his wake, he also manages to give sorghum its unique red hue. Quite the overachiever, wouldn’t you say?)

Did you know their writing system, Hangul, is one of the most scientific and accessible alphabets ever created?
