Today the Paladins of Podcast talk about the Ethical Considerations in the table top gaming space. Mike's bullet points really help us keep track of some of the biggest points within this topic, and we start out with one of the best considerations which is Consent and Safety Tools. While we understand that not all tables know what the are, or use them knowingly, many things such as lines and veils are often employed are second nature depending on the type of storyteller you are and the game you run. Rob and Eli talk a lot about what happened in some of Rob's twisted justice campaigns as well as a little bit of the contingency hero issues. One thing that Rob can't seem to understand is how some players believe that bringing a god down to their level by being incinerated is actually "bringing them down to the mortal level." However, Eli gives an example, or at least an analogy of a fly versus a human and how it actually makes sense and truthfully, Rob is able to understand.

Rob also mentions that he thinks he's decided to turn his fifth edition adventure into a mega dungeon, and we announce that we are expanding our team by looking for an additional regular host.

Are the long title still a thing? Anyhow! Rob and Eli dive into an entire conversation about some of the awesome things that have gone down in their individual campaigns. Eli tells us a little bit about some of the climbing plates that happened to plague his party over a 60 foot long gap in a magna tube while Rob details, a vampire queen of the red quart… I mean, court... And some of the amazing rules of Fey hospitality. We also come up with a few ideas on how to handle NPC to NPC only interactions that players overhear or interact with only after a short dialogue. Rob and Eli waste no time jumping into the conversation today, and while Rob has been interested in one of his newer acquisitions, Teens in Space, he hasn't had a whole heck of a lot of time to dig into the book like he'd like to. We also cover some of Eli's most recent campaign bits, one of Rob's mid session DM interruptions to help the party out, and Eli brings up The Wildsea which really sounds a whole lot like "Forrestpunk" to Rob, but the game sounds pretty damn cool.

And, our remote recording bot just stopped performing its jobs within the last two minutes or so of our episode, and I promise Eli said "I'm sure they didn't want to hear me ramble on anyway."

Rob's pretty Sure he picked up the sickies from his kids, but mustered through this episode anyway. Good thing too, because Eli asked SOOOOOO MANY QUESTIONS that Rob nearly passed out as soon as they were done recording! We hit some good points though when it comes to downtime activities, and because Rob still running pathfinder 1e, there is a great compendium of rules in the ultimate campaign book. We also completely forgot to introduce ourselves until the end of the episode, which is something we told ourselves not to do last week. All's well that ends well on a side quest!

This is the last episode. of 2022! 

We talk about the things that have hit us hard, like some of the OGL 3.0 changes by Wizards of the Coast, and some of the continual questions that pop up in popular forums like 'how do I monkey paw my players wish' and how to check in with my players about how they're feeling on the game. But all of this was just a huge lead in for the coolest thing brought to our attention of the year. Eli found Dungeon23, a mega dungeon challenge for the year 2023 where you build a single room, or encounter of your dungeon a day and at the end of the year you're looking at your very own mega dungeon.

Just earlier this week, Craig had decided to step away from SideQuests!, and we formally bid him farewell and the best of luck in every thing he does in the future; may his steps be sure and his path bright. Modiphius has been rumored to be closing their chapter on the 2d20 Conan system which is certainly sad for Rob who has yet to actually pick it up but Eli is rather excited about the potential for a new chapter of the titular barbaric hero. While Craig is on vacation, Rob and Eli tackle a few more topics that include how to handle characters with high stats and varying levels of role play skills and for a few minutes Rob hijacks the show with something incredibly off guard his players had done in The Ashlands of his world Animar.

Eli got us on the edge of our seats with a prompt of what we would do when a player decides to harvest a toxic fungus, and ask to make a tea out of it. What would you do? What would anyone do? We debate the logistics of possibilities as Rob brings up an article from earlier in 2022 when someone died by way of eating left out rice because of a bacteria that can kill you, but only AFTER it's been cooked. Crazy stuff, and we didn't mean to cause a food hysteria, but the more you know the less you go outside.

The Paladins of Podcast are back! How do you get your table to sit down, shut up, and pay attention to the game? How do you get them to participate? How do you get them to show up on time? Well, you simply make them sign a binding contract that states if they don't do these things there will be full fiery retribution filled with hate and brimstone. Okay, not really. But we do talk about what has become known as "The Social Contract," which helps state expectations of the players, the Dungeon Master, and sets the baseline for table behavior and etiquette. This was the first time Paladin of Podcast Rob has really taken the time to talk about one to his party very specifically, and it's now even available as a freebie at EpicTableGames.com. Our Paladin of Podcast Craig had some amazing news to deliver today, and it sent us down only the beginning of the rabbit hole of designing content that is going to be published. We cover a lot of the initial idea formation and the work that is needed to put out content that you're writing for a client and some of the expectations you can set as a creator. Rob was finally able to get something in the schedule to talk with Jay Dragon and Ruby Lavin after a busy August for everyone, and some tumultuous thunderstorms in early September. Aspartame is an intense, low-calorie, artificial sweetener. It is a white, odourless powder, approximately 200 times sweeter than sugar. And the paladins of podcast just can't let it go this episode! While Rob has talked about where a lot of his inspiration comes from, as we wrap up learning about Josh we take a closer look into what his general inspiration is when developing his stories and worlds. While Tolkien fantasy is always present he does seem to find some pretty unusual places to pull ideas from. But! Josh and Rob tackle the idea of table Etiquette a bit more in depth this time around, speaking from both experience and expectations. Among the things we mention like keep proper hygiene as a player, is one of the most important things as both host and DM: Do not set a precedent you can not maintain; don't load the table up with maps and terrain if you can't sustain it. Don't force the table to be on time if you can't be ready to go when they are. Keep things moving.

It is with my greatest sorrow to inform our community of the death of our co-host, Brandon "Potato" Tatroe. Without Potato, it feels hard to move forward and I know that he wouldn't want me to stop or give up. When he suddenly handed me his reigns, I knew from a recent conversation that he didn't want this to end and that I'd have to finish what we started. Something that honors and celebrates Potato, for everyone in the community. Unfortunately, this means that for a few weeks, Epic Table Games will have to pause production on our audio show while we figure out the direction and casting. We can't replace or fill Potato's shoes, but we can march forward with his approval and celebrate his life and love for this hobby.

Potato promised us some character builds for the new Playtest of Marvel Multiverse, and we finally get to see what he had going on. We detail some of the downsides of the character creation process and a little bit of the concept versus application issue many of us run into when talking about certain games and character design. Rob also lets a small secret out of the bag when it comes to his new campaign for the reduced player count - it's in the Midgard Campaign setting for Pathfinder 1e, but he has no clue what he's doing this time around which is completely unlike him.

Wizards of the Coast purchased D&D Beyond, Paizo partnered with the Foundry VTT, and we try to cover a bit of it without trying to get sidetracked, but if you know us you know it's impossible! We did fall into our typical organized chaos this episode, but its a fun ride through some great announcements if you missed it.

Today's episode is a little different than normal, because our very own podcast paladin, Potato, got to welcome his second child into the world earlier this week. He's been swamped with new duties, and was able to stop in to make sure we got something out to you all. We talk a bit about the new addition, and have a little fun relating some of our own thoughts on how the classes our children would be versus what class they currently align with now happen to be. This shorter episode is by far the most personal episode we've done, and hope it entertains you .

The PALADINS OF PODCAST are back at it again! Rob and Potato bring back the conversation about cheating, and how we personally deal with it because it really seems like so many people feel they need to micromanage the games as a DM, and don't allow players the ability time to adjust to the social culture of the party. We also touch a bit on some of the politically correct and inclusive culture and how it isn't a bad thing but can be hard to manage at times, and finish up a bit with a double dose of monster spotlight!

Rob and Potato talk about one of Rob's character ideas in depth about a chaotic good cleric who's all for healing everyone! Good guys, bad guys, party members, and more so long as they submit to their deities. While it's a difficult idea to pursue, we talk about how it has to be acceptable by the party because such a build will be complex and difficult to work with. Also, low and behold there are actual rules to support this character, so we wouldn't even have to make up some home brew things! And unfortunately we had to cut this episode short because all of our technological equipment was dying due to being more mobile than stationary today, so we were able to cover Potato's character build early before ending the episode there.

Rob and Potato take it back to an old CBR blog post about some alternative uses for spells that are actually completely legal. Things to do in a pinch, and get a better outcome towards what you're trying to do. Potato was pretty excited to talk about Modiphius Entertainment's Dune TTRPG, which does sound awesome despite Rob's carpenter jokes when he mentions how you build your houses (which is still funny by the way). As move through the landscape of political role playing, we actually got hung up when talking about The One Ring, and it just couldn't be saved. Stick with it though because we finish strong with Potato's monster spotlight and a character trope idea that Rob's looking to play in someone's game.

Rob and Potato talk about some horrible expectations from players and dungeon masters alike, when we read a few horror stories that really raise the bar on what we should do or how we should act during our game times. But you know what! When you're a player, you shouldn't chastise your dungeon master for not doing enough, when they're pouring their free time in preparing as much as they can for you. And as a Dungeon Master, stop complaining that your players keep going off the rails - your plan will go out the window, so adapt.

Rob and Potato finally have a chance to look closely into Blades in the Dark and Lamentations of the Flame Princess. While LotFP is a call back to the more gruesome and hard core mode of 2nd Edition Advanced Dungeons and Dragons with really wicked artwork, It's Blades in the Dark that has captured our attention with a Grand Theft Auto heist style adventure setup. Over the course of the next few weeks as we become more familiar with the games I'm sure we'll talk about them more.
