Dr. Albino Oliveira-Maia, researcher, and director at NOVA Medical School in Portugal, runs a clinical unit focused on providing innovative mental health treatments for cancer patients and patients with Depression and OCD who have not been helped by other methods.

Here they provide TMS in combination with other treatments and explore the positive effects and outcomes in a wide-ranging patient population, including those in geriatric care. neurocare’s Dr Trevor Brown speaks with Dr Oliveira-Maia to learn more about his research and outlook for TMS and how the method can be improved and better utilized, such as the effects of ‘maintenance’ sessions and how well TMS works in elderly.

Albino is very active in pushing for TMS and other anti-depressant treatments to become part of standard care and discusses the current limitations of mental health care in Portugal and Europe at large, and how they can be improved.

This interview may interest researchers, scientists, clinicians, and students working or studying in the field of mental healthcare. Dr. Frohlich, a pioneer in brain stimulation techniques, especially transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS), shares his groundbreaking research in this field.

Dr. Frohlich discusses his journey from working in the field of electrical engineering to further work on the complexities of the brain's neural networks. He delves into his early research focused on single cell activation and controlling firing rates, leading to his interest in feedback loops within the human brain, particularly in applying tACS during sleep spindle production. Frohlich also discusses the state of research on tACS for auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia and depression. These studies have paved the way for further research on feedback and entrainment, involving simultaneous EEG recording and tACS stimulation, effectively 'closing the loop' in brain modulation techniques.

Throughout the conversation, Dr. Frohlich emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and the need for personalized, adaptive treatments in the field of neurostimulation. He envisions leveraging the rhythmic nature of brain activity for therapeutic benefits, pointing towards a future where innovative approaches like tACS revolutionize psychiatric treatments.

---

Are you a practitioner interested in learning how you can apply neuromodulation techniques in your own practice?

Join the neurocare academy LMS and start an online certification or accreditation course online.

rTMS in Depression, OCD & New Developments: https://lms.neurocaregroup.com/shop/rtms-in-depression-ocd-new-developments-course-registration/

An Introduction to tDCS: https://lms.neurocaregroup.com/shop/an-introduction-to-tdcs-course-registration/

Neurofeedback in ADHD & Insomnia: https://lms.neurocaregroup.com/shop/neurofeedback-in-adhd-insomnia-course-registration/

neurocare Academy also offers in-person training and supervision in workshops throughout the world. For more information visit: www.neurocaregroup.com/academy/

----

The neurocare group is a global network of experts in neuroscience, psychology, engineering, with a mission to empower best practice and bring innovative and sustainable mental health techniques to more patients in need through our network of clinics.

Through this interview series, the head of the neurocare Academy, Dr Trevor Brown, interviews leading minds in this field, to present the state of research and possibilities and effective models of care in mental health and cognitive performance.

To learn more about the neurocare group and its mission visit www.neurocaregroup.com

If you are a patient looking for more information about these techniques or to find one of our clinics worldwide, visit www.neurocaregroup.com/patients/

Traditional TMS methods, while effective on a group level, lack personalization due to individual brain connectivity variations. Dr. Arns introduces NCG TMS, a pioneering approach utilizing heart rate changes to pinpoint optimal TMS sites, bridging the gap between established 5-centimeter and Beam F3 methods.

They discuss the evolution of NCG TMS to version 2.0, incorporating advanced frequency analysis. This cutting-edge technique, proven effective in both healthy individuals and patients, led to the development of an iPhone app providing personalized heart rate variability biofeedback. Dr. Arns emphasizes that NCG TMS 2.0 eliminates the guesswork in site selection, with the hope to better personalized and optimize TMS treatments, which are becoming more and more utilized in mainstream psychiatric care.

Dr. Arns is a distinguished figure in research of TMS (or rTMS) and was one of the first to pioneer TMS treatments in outpatient clinics in Europe. He is the founder and director of Brainclinics Research, advancing work in the field of stratification techniques in neuroscience and psychiatry. This conversation was held ahead of the 4th International Brain Stimulation Conferences in Charleston.
