La última vez que conversamos fue en 2022, cuando nos compartió las novedades de su carrera y sus proyectos musicales. Desde entonces, Daniel ha continuado creciendo como artista, compositor y educador, consolidando una propuesta que fusiona el jazz contemporáneo con las raíces musicales latinoamericanas.

En esta nueva entrevista hablaremos sobre su segundo álbum, “Raíces”, una producción que profundiza en la identidad musical de Latinoamérica; conoceremos sus más recientes proyectos educativos, su experiencia con su nuevo bajo Sadowsky y los planes que tiene para el futuro. Raíces, publicado en 2024, representa un nuevo capítulo en su trayectoria artística y reúne composiciones originales inspiradas en los ritmos y paisajes del sur del continente.

MonoNeon’s been keeping busy, touring internationally and currently making his way across the U.S. as part of his latest run. If you’ve seen him live, you know his performances are anything but ordinary… funky and full of character.

He recently released a new album titled You Had Your Chance… Bad Attitude. It features eight tracks of off-center, groove-heavy funk, delivered in his unmistakable style. It’s a solid listen, start to finish.

Last December (2024) some of our very good friends invited us to the Smith Center here in Las Vegas to check out a band I was unfamiliar with, the Huntertones.

From the moment they took the stage this six-piece band came out swinging with super high energy and one of the tightest, most entertaining collections of music I have ever heard. Driving the low end, Adam DeAscentis did a superb job of tying the melody and the percussion elements, together with great skill. The horn section reminded me of early Chicago with its precision and smooth unison. And I was pleasantly surprised with Dan’s tenor sax tone as it was so full and meaty. I later confirmed that he plays a 1954 Selmer (If I recall correctly); they don’t make horns like that anymore.

After we thoroughly enjoyed this show, I met Adam and made a connection for us to chat in more detail for this interview.

Steve Freeman is the founder of the Atlanta Institute of Music and Media in September 1985 with the goal of bringing Howard Roberts style school known as GIT Guitar Institute of Technology founded in Hollywood California. Steve and Bill Hart, who was a long-time, some 30-year guitar department head, met in California while Bill attended GIT and they have been close friends for decades… I think it is very interesting how institutions get off the ground, it's not easy… like an airplane taking off, you need full power and concentration to keep things rolling in a straight line to get off the ground and then diligence to get where you are going… hats off Steve! This is a remembrance of the early days of what is now an accredited college for music performance, audio, and video production…

Hank Horton is a heavy-hitter vocalist, producer, and bassist who fits into that category. Hank has a diverse skillset where he can play electric for Jeff “Skunk” Baxter (and a ton of other renowned musicians), play upright in the Detroit Symphony, or be excellent in a Broadway pit.

I also understand that Hank has been using the Katana-210 Bass Amplifier, typically designed for electric bass, for his upright bass—a unique technique that he says has helped him to elevate his sound in recent years.

Blues Traveler has always been one of my favorite bands.
Whenever “Run Around” would pop up on MTV, I would always drop whatever I was doing to watch. Now, The band is celebrating the 30th anniversary of their Grammy award-winning album “Four” (I still have my copy from back in the day) with a very cool limited edition purple vinyl record set.

Since that early hit record, the band has been going strong and kept very busy touring and releasing albums; it is great to see a band with such continuity and staying power.

Tad Kinchla has been playing the bass for Blues Traveler since 1999 and I am thrilled to have a chance to bring you this interview. Join me as we learn about Tad’s musical journey, his experiences with Blues Traveler, how he gets his sound, and his plans for the future.

This was the case with “Heaven” by Los Lonely Boys. I was glad when I finally found out who the band was as I could look for more of their music. BTW, this tune still makes me smile from the opening few bars.

After more than a decade, the news of a new album titled, “Resurrection” came across my desk and the expertly crafted tracks I heard were full of messages of hope and healing, fitting for our times.

I was very excited to have the opportunity to chat with the band’s bassist, Jojo Garza and to be able to share this conversation. His story is inspiring and his musical journey is quite remarkable. This book is a very fun read for everyone and shares a ton of details about Lee’s life in general, his experiences as a musician, a radio host, and a luthier. Now I am fortunate to have the great opportunity to gain even more insights into this renaissance man with this video interview.

You might remember that we had him on our cover back in 2017 and did an update when he launched his book “Everybody Loves Me” in 2020. It was exciting to hear that The Immediate Family had got back together in the studio to work on their own music in 2019 and are now up to two albums.

The Golden Years of Motown With Bassist Tony Newton

I am always learning new details about Bass history when I get the opportunity to talk with seasoned players like Tony Newton. Tony, a Detroit native, came up in the golden years of Motown and laid down the low end for countless performers and studio sessions; he has performed on over 25 gold and platinum hit recordings.

As time went by, and the whole Detroit scene dwindled, Tony relocated to LA where he worked a busy schedule, even going back to school to learn about music theory and composition.

Over the years he performed on many historic hit recordings and tours with Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson(music Director), the Temptations, Aretha Franklin, The Funk Brothers and more, as well as working with veteran rock guitarist, Gary Moore in the British group G-Force.

Presently, Tony is super busy and on the verge of releasing a movie titled “Mars Quest” among his numerous other projects.

Growing up in a musical family on the south side of Chicago and playing alongside diverse world-class artists has provided profound musical insight and inspiration which can only be heard in the music of Darryl Jones.

After several years gigging around the Chicago music scene, Darryl’s international recording and touring career took flight at age 21, with jazz icon Miles Davis. Gigs with Sting, Herbie Hancock, Peter Gabriel, Madonna, Eric Clapton, and others soon followed, and since ‘93 he’s been the bassist for the Rolling Stones. When his schedule permits, he performs with other artists, co-leads a couple of bands, serves the legacy of The Chief with the Miles Electric Band; and in 2017 he debuted The Darryl Jones Project.

Besides touring and recording, Darryl keeps busy writing music, including composing the score for an award-winning film. He continues his education and was selected to participate in the Sundance Institute’s famed Music & Sound Design Lab at Skywalker Ranch in 2017. He teaches classes and conducts clinics around the world, and in 2014 he founded Jones Musical Instruments to craft custom basses and guitars.

It has been almost a decade since Tim Risser interviewed Five Finger Death Punch bassist Chris Kael for Bass Musician. As you can imagine, a lot has happened since then and I am very happy to report that Chris is rocking harder than ever with 5FDP; the band is touring and they have a new album, Afterlife. This album is tied into a Graphic Novel and is a hard-hitting, multi-media project that is definitely mind-blowing. The first two videos “Times Like This” and “Welcome to the Circus” are superbly done and have a curling edge Sci-Fi kind of feel that leaves you waiting for the next installment.

It was a collaborative effort of all the faculty answering the question: “What do they, our students, and charges need to learn”…answer: A LOT!!! The good news is, that you don’t have to spend 4 years full-time. You can grab what interests you, dare I say “Cherry Pick” from the materials what interests you. This book is a bargain… buy it, and start working on it, it will make you a better guitar player!
