Rafael Martínez is an Assistant Professor of Southwest Borderlands in the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts. At ASU, he teaches courses on the American Southwest, Arizona History, the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands, and Transborder Chicano Literature. Dr. Raul Fernandez is a Senior Lecturer at Boston University, where he studies, writes, and teaches about inequities in education. He is also Chair of the Racial Imbalance Advisory Council, where he advises the Mass. Commissioner of Education and Board of Education on school (de)segregation in public schools in the Commonwealth.

 In the last few years alone, Dr. Fernandez wrote a piece that helped topple a monument to white supremacy, created a film series that engaged thousands of participants in challenging dialogues, and trained thousands more in equitable policymaking at institutions in the US and abroad. 

Dr. Fernandez also served as a member of Brookline Select Board – the first Latinx person elected to that position. During his time there he created a working group to support public housing residents, a Racial Equity Advancement Fund, and a task force to reimagine public safety. 

Dr. Fernandez is also the Policy Chair on the board of Amplify Latinx, which seeks to build economic and political power for Latinos in Massachusetts, and a board member of Commonwealth Kitchen, which supports women and people of color in starting food businesses. He is also the Founding Executive Director of Brookline for Racial Justice & Equity, where he lives with his family in Brookline, Massachusetts.

Brittany Simpson, Born and Raised in Sunrise fl. Playing soccer sinc the age of 3, Brittany attended an academic and athletic high school where she played varsity all 4 years, as well as being a part of various honor societies. She committed to Yales D1 soccer program after her sophomore year. 

During College she play on the Yale Woman's soccer team for all 4 years while majoring in Chemistry. Captained her senior yea, she continued to play after graduating in England for over 2 years. She also played on the youth us national teams and finally with the Jamaican National 1st team, qualifying for the 2019 woman's world cup.

Luis Lopez was born in San Luis Potosí Mexico and migrated to Beaumont Texas with his family at the age of 7. The first in his family to graduate from high school, Luis continued his education at Lamar University. Upon earning both his Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Science of Accounting from Lamar University, he joined Deloitte & Touche’s audit department and permanently made the city of Houston his home. Luis later joined National Oilwell Varco (NOV) as a Project Accountant. 

In 2014, determined to give the west side of Harris County a progressive voice in our state capital, Luis ran an aggressive campaign for State Representative District 132. Luis left NOV for a more interactive and people-centric purpose in 2015 and acquired an Insurance Agency and began his career as an entrepreneur. Eager to continue giving back to the community in 2017 Luis joined the board of the Latino Texas PAC, a political action committee dedicated to increasing the representation of Latinas and Latinos in elected positions. Luis acquired a local accounting firm in August of 2020. Last year Luis founded a residential construction company and will soon complete its first project. 

Luis is often on a softball diamond or at a jujitsu class practicing with his 9-year-old daughter.

Who says dreams don't come true? This week, we had an enlightening conversation with Luis Lopez. Born and raised in Mexico, Luis immigrated to the United States at the tender age of seven. From my terrifying experience translating for my ailing grandmother to EMTs, to the pressures of performing academically, I've braved them all. The moment of triumph? I was not privileged to have mentors or guidance, and I often battled academic pressure.
