Identity is Not Achieved, It's Received

Who gets to tell you who you are?

Most of us spend our lives trying to answer the question, “Who am I?” We build our identity around what we accomplish, how others see us, our relationships, our failures, our reputation, or the roles we fill. But anything powerful enough to give us an identity can also become something we have to constantly protect and prove.

Join us in 2 Corinthians 5:16–21, as Pastor Noah walks through where Paul gives Christians a radically different way to understand themselves.

In Christ, your identity is not achieved—it is received.

Jesus changes how we see ourselves and others. He reconciles us to God through the cross, makes us new creations, and gives us an identity that does not rise and fall with our successes and failures. And once we know whose we are, we begin to understand why we are here: to live as Christ’s ambassadors, carrying his message of reconciliation into the world.

Your best day does not make Jesus’ righteousness more complete.
Your worst day does not make Jesus’ righteousness less complete.
Jesus is enough.

All of us carry assumptions-- ideas we've inherited, conclusions we've drawn from painful experiences, of things we've simply heard so many times that we stopped asking whether they were actually true. But sincerity doesn't replace accuracy.

In John 20:1-18, Mary Magdalene, Peter, and John come to the empty tomb carrying their own confusion, guilt questions, and assumptions. Then they are confronted with with a reality that changes everything.

You Can't Step Out in Faith if You're Sunk Down in Fear

Fear can leave you stuck. ashamed, and afraid to take the next step. But in Mark 5:21-43, Jesus shows us that fear does not have to control our future. You can't step out in faith while staying sunk down in fear.

In this message from Westmark Church's "In Good Company" sermon series, Pastor Noah explores the stories of Jairus and the woman who had suffered for twelve years. One respected and powerful, the other rejected and ashamed. Yet both were helpless, desperate, and in need of Jesus.

Most of us have said it before: "I was going to..."
So much regret can be tied up in those words.

I was going to lose weight.
I was going to fix it.
I was going to forgive them.
I was going to quit that.
I was going to finish that.

No one plans to live an "I was going to" life, but many people end up drifting into one.

In this message from 2 Thessalonians 1:11-12, Pastor Noah Tyler, Lead Pastor of Westmark Church continues the Praying Like Paul series by looking at how Paul prayed for believers to become who God called them to be, to do what God placed before them, and to live for the glory of Jesus.

Paul's secret is not to just try harder. Paul actually prays that God would make these Christians worthy of their calling as Christians, that God would empower their good desires and faith-moments, and that God would aim their lives toward the glory of Christ.

It turns out that trying harder had nothing to do with it, but just asking God to intervene.

How to Pray for the People You Love

There are some people you don't just think about-- you carry them. A child making choices that scare you. A friend drifting from Jesus. Someone suffering, lonely, or pull in in the wrong direction. You love them deeply but you can't control them.

So, what do you do with that burden?

In 1 Thessalonians 3:9-13, Paul shows us what love does when it cannot fix, control, or be present: love turns into prayer.

Praying to Know What to Do

What should you do when you don't know what to do?
Is your first instinct to pray?

People pray for all sorts of reasons-- We pray before meals, we pray when the test results come back. We pray when the relationship is falling apart. We pray when we get pulled over.
And, sometimes, even people who say they don't believe in God find themselves crying out to him when they don't know what else to do.

Working through Philippians 1:9-11, Pastor Noah Tyler finds the answer to this simple question: What should you do when you don't know what to do?

Paul's answer may surprise you. He doesn't simply pray for circumstances to always be easy, He prays for something much more fundamental.

This message explores how th love of Jesus changes the way we see our decisions, our relationships, our suffering, our future, and our everyday lives. We also look at the story of a hardened sailor caught in a deadly storm, whose desperate prayer-- "Lord have mercy"-- became he beginning of a life transformed by amazing grace.

What should we pray for when we feel weak, empty, worn down, or stuck?

The 7 Deadly Sins: Lust

In this final sermon from our Seven Deadly Sins series, Lead Pastor Noah Tyler begins in 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8 on to teach on lust as a disordered love of sexual pleasure.

Looking at a number of different scriptures we see that lust promises satisfaction, but it slowly deceives us, isolates us, and teaches us to use people instead of love them.

But the gospel offers something better. In Christ, we are fully known and fully loved. In Christ we are made holy, blameless, and free from accusation-- which means we can belong. Jesus does not merely call us away from impurity; he calls us into healing, freedom, and life in the light.

The 7 Deadly Sins: Gluttony

This week at Westmark Church, we continue our series on the Seven Deadly Sins with a heart-level look at gluttony.

Gluttony is not merely about eating too much. It is about being ruled by appetite. In Philippians 3:17–21, Paul warns about those whose “god is their belly,” showing us that appetite can become a master when food becomes more than food — a refuge, reward, medication, or source of satisfaction.

In this sermon, Pastor Noah Tyler looks at how gluttony can show up through indulgence, control, comfort eating, emotional distraction, and the search for satisfaction apart from God. But the gospel gives us a better hope: our citizenship is in heaven, Christ is transforming our lowly bodies, and the Spirit teaches us self-control.

We’ll also consider how the practice of fasting trains our hearts to say no to lesser satisfactions so we can hunger more deeply for Jesus, the Bread of Life.

The 7 Deadly Sins: Sloth

In this sermon from Matthew 25:24–30, Pastor Noah Tyler continues our series through the Seven Deadly Sins by looking at the sin of sloth. But sloth is not simply laziness. As this message explains, sloth can hide in both laziness and busyness. At its root, sloth is escaping love’s cost of growing or changing.

Jesus’ parable of the talents shows us a servant who buried what his master entrusted to him because he was afraid. In the same way, we often bury the opportunities, relationships, responsibilities, gifts, and callings God has given us because we are afraid of what obedience will cost.

But the opposite of sloth is perseverance: learning to stay where God is forming us.

Sloth screams, “Escape.”Jesus invites us, “Stay.”
Stay in the conversation. Stay in prayer. Stay in worship. Stay in the work of love. Stay where grace is forming you. Because Jesus did not escape the cost of love—he stayed through betrayal, suffering, the cross, and the grave. And because he stayed for us, we can trust him enough to stay with him.

The 7 Deadly Sins: Greed

You might be greedier than you think/ It's easier than we'd like to admit to fall into the trap of "moreism"-- what I have is never enough, but more will be. Always hungry, never satisfied.

You might not think that you're green with envy, but what if envy was a lot more than just a fleeting moment of jealousy? And what if it was much more dangerous?

Envy is more than wanting what someone else has; envy is the anxiety produced from believing that someone else is earning the love you deserve. In this sermon, Pastor Noah Tyler continues our series through The Seven Deadly Sins by looking at the subtle, deadly danger of envy: what it is, how to recognize it in our hearts, and how the grace of God is the antidote.

Consider the parable of the workers of vineyard of Matthew 20:1-16, Romans 5:8 and John the Baptist's success over envy in John 3. This strong biblical foundation teach us that envy will lose its grip when we stop competing for love and receive the generous grace of God in Christ.

If comparison to others has made you anxious, bitter toward others or yourself, discouraged, or unable to rejoice in the good that God gives to others-- those are yellow flags that the cancer of envy has settled into your heart. Envy is much more sinister, much more connected to anxieties and self-hatred, and much more of a direct attack against God than most of us want to think.

Anger is not always sinful, so how can you tell the difference between Good Anger and Bad Anger? In this sermon from our Seven Deadly Sins series, we look at what anger is, how to tell the difference between righteous and sinful anger, and how to trace back anger to the heart.

While we think much of our anger is about fighting the ultimate justice, it turns out that a lot of our own anger is really about our wounded pride, control, and unforgiveness.
