Acts 1:6-11 - When Jesus revealed Himself as the promised Davidic King who would restore Israel (Acts 3:19-22), He was rejected by the Jews, exactly as Isaiah had prophesied (Isaiah 52-53). Jesus therefore called His disciples to fulfill Abraham’s commission to bless the nations (Genesis 12:2-3) by preaching the gospel of the Kingdom to all nations until the end of this age (Matthew 28:18-20). Paul thus preached the gospel of the Kingdom to the Jews and was repeatedly rejected (Acts 13-28); in consequence, Paul brought the good news to the Gentiles, who in turn became Abraham’s spiritual seed by faith and heirs of the promises to Abraham and his seed (Galatians 3-4).

This is what Paul meant in Romans 11 by the Gentiles being “grafted” into the “olive tree” and nourished by the “root” (Abraham’s spiritual seed). The tree thus signifies the collective people of God; the “wild branches” grafted in are Gentile believers; the “natural branches” that are cut off are the Jews in unbelief. Jewish believers remain in the tree but are joined with Gentiles and “made” into a “new body,” the Church (Ephesians 2:11–22).

Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”

In the New Testament church people demanded their rights. No different than today. 1 Corinthians 6:6-8.

James, John, and their mom were self-focused. Jesus’ death on the Cross is a little over a week away. And amid Jesus’ focus on Jerusalem, James and John turn the focus to themselves. Insensitive and self-focused, they will call for a private meeting.

Pastor Bob and Pastor Phil sit down to talk about different types of loneliness (situational, emotional and chronic), and how all of them can negatively impact our mental health and our well-being. Because of the way our brains work, negative thoughts can be stored up and develop into patterns of negative thinking outside of our conscious awareness.

ANTs are thoughts, not facts, so we are able to change them. In our discussion, we talk about how our brains work and where these automatic negative thoughts come from. We also discuss how to begin to recognize them, challenge them, and correct them according to what is true.

We view obstacles as bad and annoying. These untimed “thorns in our side” that bring discomfort. God loved Jonah as much as Nineveh. And when Jonah got off course, God was going to bring obstacles into his life to bring him back.

God has a place for you.

According to 2 Corinthians 4:7, we have a wonderful treasure in these jars of clay we call our human bodies. The treasure of salvation. The treasure that touched us as desperate men and women works in us to serve.

Jesus has a place for you to serve Him.

In obedience to the Father, He endured the sufferings and the brutality of the cross to complete the work of redemption. Jesus, the suffering Son of God is the Christ who provides the way for humanity to be restored back to God the father and have eternal life in His name.

Hebrews 5:8-9 Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him.

John 14 & 16 | Influencers. We are bombarded with people who seek to influence us to causes, personal life changes, and ideologies about society and human existence.

For the believer, the Holy Spirit can be a powerful influencer when we don’t stifle His interaction in our lives. He is not an imaginative entity, not a mystical figure, or some strange force.

He is God the Holy Spirit. He has been an influence before life on planet earth, Genesis 1:2. He was active in the hearts of men and women in Israel’s history. David cried out in Psalm 51, “Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.” The Gospel writer, Luke, reported that “Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit,” Luke 4:14. Previously we saw that the Spirit was another of the same kind [John 14:16], that He is truth [John 14:17], and that He pushes us to love Jesus [John 14:21].

John 15:1-17 | God loves us. God desires us to be pruned and bear fruit in the world until Jesus returns.

The vine has played a picturesque role in the nation of Israel. God used the vine to speak of Israel’s prosperity and Israel’s decline due to a broken relationship with Him. Jesus often uses agriculture to describe the spiritual of people. Soil, fig trees, vines, and farming are examples throughout the New Testament. And the classic Psalm 1 speaks to the effects of God’s Word in our lives, “He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither.”

The vine and grapes are illustrations God uses in both the old and new covenants to describe blessing and brokenness. Now, John 15. Jesus will use vines, branches, and grapes to teach us discipleship principles.

Love one another [John 13:34-35], love as Jesus loved [John 13:1], and love Jesus [John 14:15] is what Jesus shares with His disciples, hours before going to the garden to pray [John 18:1]. There is no greater commandment than to love. Love covers a multitude of sins. Let’s get it right today.

How do we navigate well into agapa love? With “another Helper,” [John 14:16] and with an understanding of “being” and not “doing” [Revelation 2:1-4].

We have alarm systems, emergency personnel, and trauma one hospitals. We have friends who we trust and the comfort of our own dwelling places. Many times, at the end of life, people want to pass away in their own homes because it is safe. As Jesus is preparing to transition from earth to heaven, He is confronted with comforting His disciples. Right now, they don’t feel safe. Jesus will reassure them that, in His absence, they can feel safe and have the assurance of being safe for eternity.

That’s why He understands us so well (Hebrews 2:14-18). It’s not that God doesn’t care when I hurt, it’s that God understands my hurt and can walk with me in the hurt.
