Ep59 - Fighting The Good Fight… And Losing What Matters Most

<itunes:summary> In this episode, Michelle Rogers shares the powerful story of a mom who’s ready to “fight the good fight” after insurance denied her autistic daughter’s speech therapy — and how that same fight can quietly steal what matters most: our child’s progress. Michelle unpacks the emotional trap so many autism parents fall into — battling systems that aren’t invested in their child’s outcome — while their child sits waiting to be taught. It's been a while since I've been podcasting.

We've been so busy. We have so many new families that have joined the champions for our children masterclass, and my new membership next level autism. So if you guys ever want any information on that, you can always email me at michelle@michellebrogers.com.

But today's episode is actually an excerpt from a workshop I just recently did. I think one of the most important things as parents of children with autism is that we try a lot of things. And a lot of things that we try might not work and we get very frustrated. And then sometimes we believe, because we've been socially conditioned, that the autism diagnosis may make it that our child can't learn. I don't believe that. But because we might have that kind of playing in the back of our heads, we may start and stop things like potty training or teaching our kids how to communicate or stop problem behavior.

So I think one of the more powerful things that I can share with you is kind of hearing everything that you've tried and understanding why you think it hasn't worked and then actually tell you why it hasn't worked and give you a path forward. So this podcast episode is dedicated to doing just that you're going to hear me coaching spas parents, who are who were brave enough to come forward on this webinar to allow me to hear their stories. Hear what they've tried, it's gonna it's gonna you know, you know tug at your heartstrings but once I once you see me coaching them, or you hear me coaching them through this, I hope it brings clarity for you too. So sit back listen and enjoy and I hope to speak with you soon. Ostia that squares I'm going to bring you up so what's going to happen guys your screen is going to blank, you're going to come up as a panelist and I want to hear all about your baby and let's get let's get to coaching

🎙️ New Episode Alert! 🚀 Join me in the latest episode of the Autism Mom's Potty Talk Podcast, Episode 14, as we dive deep into solving problem behaviors. I'm Michelle B. Rogers, an autism mom and life coach, here to help parents of non-verbal children with autism achieve potty training success, guaranteed!

First off, I want to express my gratitude for the incredible support we've received since launching this podcast. Your feedback and downloads from all around the world are simply mind-blowing. Together, we're making a difference in the lives of families on the autism spectrum, and I'm truly honored to be part of this journey.

Before we tackle today's topic on problem behaviors, let me give you a quick family update. My daughter, Juliana, who was diagnosed with autism at age two, is now thriving at 10, going on 11. She's attending a general education class with minimal support, has friends, and is fully potty trained. The key, I believe, is my unwavering belief in my ability to be the best mother for her. It's been a transformative journey, and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Now, let's get into the heart of today's episode – addressing problem behaviors. I believe that every child with autism can lead an independent life if they master three key life skills. We've covered the first two in previous episodes: potty training and communication. The third, which we're exploring today, is managing problem behaviors.

It's important to note that problem behaviors are often linked to a child's inability to communicate effectively. Functional communication is the foundation, and I've seen remarkable changes when children start to communicate, even non-verbally. Juliana's journey, learning sign language, was a turning point. Her tantrums decreased as her communication skills improved.

To help you navigate and solve problem behaviors, I've created a free guide, "The Autism Mom's Survival Guide to Problem Behaviors." You can get your hands on it by emailing me at Michelle@MichelleRogers.com, just mention the podcast.

We'll be diving deep into this guide, dissecting problem behaviors, and learning how to prevent them from happening again. It's time to break free from the cycle of feeling helpless and understand the "why" behind these behaviors.

Tune in now and empower yourself with the knowledge and tools to support your child on the autism spectrum. Together, we'll make a difference! 🌟 #AutismMomsPottyTalk #PodcastEpisode14 #ProblemBehaviorsSolved

In this episode, after discussing breaking down potty training into multiple segments in the last podcast, today I'm dedicating this episode to tackling the challenges of teaching your child to handle poop separately. Much like my recent experience of potty training my cats, I've come to appreciate the value of patience and commitment in achieving long-term goals. The same principles apply when training children on the autism spectrum. The gradual process involves assessing your child's abilities, focusing on small wins, and understanding the sensory differences between pee and poop. Remember, it's all about building a strong foundation for successful potty training, just like my endeavor with my cats. We've seen incredible results in our 90-day group coaching program, boasting a 100% success rate for families who join us on this journey.

Potty training can be a major challenge for parents, and it's a question I receive frequently as an autism mom and life coach. So, I'm here to address this issue head-on and provide you with the knowledge and strategies you need. In these two episodes, I won't hold anything back.

Now, let's get into the details. In today's episode, we'll be focusing on the power of potty thinking. You might be surprised to learn that 95% of potty training success lies in our mindset, while only 5% involves the tactical aspects. It's essential to understand the impact our thoughts have on the entire potty training process. From the thoughts before we start to the thoughts during the process, our mindset can make or break our progress.

I firmly believe that almost all children and adults with autism, regardless of the severity of their symptoms, can learn to use the potty. Our program's 100% success rate reinforces this belief. Even if your child is nonverbal or preverbal, they have the potential to achieve potty training success. It's all about breaking through our limiting beliefs and embracing the possibilities.

In this series, I'll be addressing the mindset required for potty training and the tactical strategies that support it. It's crucial to realize that potty training isn't just about following a set of steps; it's about the thoughts and attitudes we bring to the process. Our thoughts shape our actions and ultimately determine the outcome.

I've seen incredible transformations in the lives of families who have embraced potty training. It's a pivotal moment that creates momentum and strengthens the bond between parent and child. Whether potty training is your child's aha moment or the starting point for a positive shift in your parenting journey, I'm here to support you every step of the way.

So, get ready to dive into the world of potty thinking and unlock the potential for success. Stay tuned for the next episode, where we'll delve into the tactical strategies that will help you achieve your potty training goals. Remember, with the right mindset, anything is possible.
