I retired from pro cycling ten years ago, but I still share my exploits and train as much as I can. The questions I get most often are "how much fitness have you lost since the pro days?" And "Are you going back to reclaim the KOM that you first got 8 years ago?"

I came from a world where you train at home, but your race schedule is the real training, so have been pleasantly surprised at the numbers I'm still able to do, with zero race miles in my legs, just doing group rides and workouts on my own, prescribed by my coach since 2014, Frank Overton of Fascat Coaching.

Frank comes on to give an honest assessment of where my numbers have landed 10 years after retirement, and our approach moving forward, as my goals are still cycling performance, but it's now wrapped in more general health, as we think about how I might be able to perform at 50, or 80.

Often when I post a photo from a bike ride, someone will correct me for something weird, quoting a “Rule #.” I’ve had people make fun of a riders’ hairy legs in a picture I posted, and I think back to when I started, how intimidating it was to figure out all the details. Years later, I literally was a pro, but I still had people explaining to me how to look “pro.”

The truth is that everyone crashes the first time they try clipless pedals and we’ve all gotten a big grease stain on our calf and walked around with it all day like a piece of spinach in our teeth. I don’t think these “rules” were meant to exclude. I think they were fun, tongue-in-cheek, maybe a reference, but they have been misapplied. I decided that it’s time for an update or an alternative. It can evolve if you have suggestions, but I offer this to start:

The New Rules of Cycling: AKA Philuminati

Rule #1: Everyone riding a bike and being safe and having fun is doing it right.
Rule #2: Wear whatever the hell you want.
Rule #3: Nothing on your bike has to match. Cycling is already expensive, complicated, elitist, and often sexist and racist. Don’t make it harder because someone’s tires aren’t the same brand.
Rule #4: A Gran Fondo is as competitive as you want it to be, but the group ride is a workout, not a race. You should have no feelings about winning, not winning, who crossed the imaginary line first for no prize or how they did it.
Rule #5: In traffic, we take the space we need, obey the laws that make sense for us, and try to be courteous. Pedestrians have right of way. If you want cars to respect cyclists, cyclists have to respect people on foot.
Rule #6: We all wave to each other. This includes triathletes, commuters, e-bikes, homeless people, and scooters. We’re in this together. The enemy is car culture.
Rule #7: If you’re not into helmets that’s your decision, but do respect the policies of who you’re riding with. We don’t helmet shame (adult) strangers we see without them, but don’t show up on the group ride like that if that’s not how everyone else does it.
Rule #8: Strava is a social media platform, not a race. Follow Strava’s policies, express yourself with your cool bike rides and your pictures and fitness. If you lose a KOM, you remember that a KOM means nothing. You give Kudos and get inspired to improve and try to take it back.
Rule #9: For fucks sake don’t litter. I can’t believe I have to say that.
Rule #10: Suffering is a choice–not a rule. You’re no more of a cyclist than someone else because you go faster or they stay home when it’s raining.

Today’s stage was another chance for the sprinters and supposed to be an easy day, but this race refuses to follow the script. Groups everywhere, GC guys missing splits, Campanearts going again, a groupetto 10 minutes down on a flat stage. Every 10k was a different race scenario, with a photo finish in the finale. Today’s stage was finally a chance for the sprinters 185k with a few short hills but mostly flat, which did not go as expected. I was bored all day and mad at myself for wasting my time watching this race, but in retrospect I loved every minute it.

Today's stage was a 22 km time trial. This was the GC stage that we were all curious about and waiting for, and it did deliver. That said, it was also a time trial, which means it was very boring. I watched the whole thing so you don't have to.

If know you me, you know that I have a complicated relationship with pro cycling, where I gave it the best years of my life, it stabbed me in the back and shoved me out in my prime, but then launched me to a better life than I ever could have dreamed of. To be honest (other than when someone texted me that a friend was going to win the stage) I haven’t watched a bike race since 2016. I was always turned off by some doper in the pack or the commentary booth, but folks liked the podcast series, and a ton of you asked me to keep it going during the Tour. Maybe this will be healthy for me.

I have done hundreds of pro races, I know these guys and the teams and a lot of what’s going on and I have plenty of inside squawk and gossip. I’ll give you the summary, tell you what I’m seeing that might be a little different from what they’re saying on TV, but mostly I’m looking to enjoy it together.

Stage 10 was a fun mess! From an early breakaway, joined by a split, with another breakaway coming out of it, I could barely keep track of what the hell was going on. I’ll tell you what that feels like in the pack, and how it works itself out.

Stage 9 was two exciting races for the price of one! The breakaway was a nailbiter for the final 60k, with an amazing finale, and the 12% gradients were another test in what's proving to be a tight GC battle.

Stage 8 was a sprint stage, with an exciting finale but the big story is Cavendish, for all the wrong reasons. Bike racing can be cruel at times.

Stage 6 was another doozy with the Tourmalet! My predictions stay the same, but there’s definitely more drama and more to watch than we expected for the GC battle, and of course tons of great subplots.

Stage 5 was a blast, and I expect will prove to be the most important stage of the Tour. Big big climbs and aggressive tactics, I think it’s now clear who’ll win the GC and who has the strongest team, but there’s still a lot of subplots to follow.

The riders took advantage of the flat stage to rest their legs for tomorrow, which looks like a good one. All day we looked forward to the sprint, which sort of turned out to be a bummer. Watch the final 5k to see what I mean, or skip it altogether and save your popcorn for stage 5.

I’ll give a score every day on a scale of 0 to 10 with 0 meaning don’t turn it on, 5 watch the last 20k, and 10 means force my wife @emialv to watch it start to finish. I’ll also ask questions like if I was on watching at the event, where would I want to be any why.

Today, we have a mostly boring stage but a hint of what's to come for the jersey points and the GC. A pair of twins battle it out for yellow! Adorable or awkward? Are mom and dad allowed to be happy about it?
