Reading George Monbiot's book 'Feral' a decade ago opened Ben Goldsmith's eyes to the truly dire state of nature in Britain, and to the notion that rewilding is the big idea which has the potential to turn things round.

George is a truly brilliant and articulate nature campaigner. He emphasises that many of the landscapes in the UK are pretty dire in ecological terms but that this damage can be reversed through rewilding.

Ben Goldsmith is a British financier and rewilding enthusiast. Join him as he speaks to people from all over the world who champion nature and are helping to restore habitats and wildlife to some of the most nature depleted parts of our planet.

Wild land for everyone: The Rothbury Estate campaign with Craig Bennett

In this episode of Rewilding the World, Ben Goldsmith is joined by Craig Bennett, chief executive of the iconic Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts. Under Craig’s leadership, the Wildlife Trusts have become one of the most important forces for ambitious nature recovery in Britain.

The Wildlife Trusts is currently undertaking a massive £30 million landmark appeal to purchase the Rothbury Estate, a vast, heart-shaped upland estate in Northumberland. As President Emeritus of The Wildlife Trusts, Sir David Attenborough is also supporting the campaign. If successfully secured, The Wildlife Trusts will work with local farmers to restore bogs, plant trees, and create a 40-mile nature corridor.

Dams, pollution and the collapse of the European eel with Joe Pecorelli

The European eel is a truly fascinating creature, spending its life in freshwater rivers, streams, and even ponds, before turning silvery blue and swimming all the way to Bermuda’s Sargasso Sea to breed. Eels are disappearing fast.

Translocating two thousand giants across Africa with Donovan Jooste

"There's no silver bullet. It's a combination of efforts and it's a moving target. We constantly have to be adaptive, we constantly have to try and get ahead of the game and looking at it at a population level and not at an individual level is really, really important for the long term success here."

African Parks made the astoundingly bold move of buying out a bankrupt white rhino farm in South Africa to rescue two thousand of these endangered giants.

Now they’re busy translocating them across parks and reserves in Africa, often to places which haven’t seen rhinos for generations. The logistical challenges are immense. This is one of the boldest rewilding initiatives in Africa, ever.

The cougar comeback with Renee Seacor and Emily Carrollo

"It's very important to remember - for the same reasons we bought back many of these other species like beaver, river otter, fisher, bald eagle - that all these species have a role ecologically in these ecosystems. And so the same questions should be asked for species like large carnivores to help restore those ecological interactions and ecosystem services."

America’s apex predator is the cougar, or mountain lion. They’re thriving in the West, but were wiped out two centuries ago in the East, where talk of restoring them has simmered for decades. After spending time in New England during the summer of 2021 Ben Goldsmith became obsessed with this.

Working with Mighty Earth and a growing coalition of other groups, Ben is proud to be part of a growing campaign to reintroduce ‘catamounts’, as New Englanders called them. Join him in conversation with Renee Seacor from the Bring Catamounts Home campaign, and cougars expert from Panthera, Emily Carrollo.

Saving songbirds from slaughter in the Mediterranean with Lloyd Scott

"The amount of times I've been and just for a brief moment you almost sort of lose track and forget ... and you're just looking at this marvel on a really good migration day and the number of birds... and it's absolutely incredible and then the next thing you know, all of a sudden, you'll hear the gunshots start."

The massacre of migrating birds each spring and autumn around the Mediterranean is ecocide. It’s done mostly for fun, status and selfies; sometimes for delicacies. Nightingales and passerines of all kinds, turtle doves, kestrels, hawks, raptors and even storks and flamingos are gunned down or lured and trapped with glued branches and cruel snares.

One organisation, the Committee Against Bird Slaughter or CABS, is fighting this atrocity all over the Med. In this episode Ben Goldsmith is in conversation with Lloyd Scott about what they are doing to help save these birds.

Meet the Pablo Escobar of beavers, Gerhard Schwab

"I'm very happy, last week we brought beavers to France and that was my 1000th beaver I had exported either myself or through the organisation. And that was not just to bring back the beaver, but also to bring back the benefits of the beaver."

One man is responsible more than any other for bringing beavers back to Europe; German ecologist, Gerhard Schwab.

There were probably two to three million beavers across Eurasia, reduced to maybe a thousand in 1900. Gerhard persuaded one state after the next in Germany to do reintroductions and physically led the process. He brought beavers back from the tiny refuges where a handful had survived in Poland, Belarus and the marshes of Germany and France. He mixed them up to create genetic strength and reintroduced them in one place after the next right across Europe.

Rebuilding the natural treasures of Mauritius with Carl Jones

Saving albatrosses on a sub-Antarctic island with Anton Wolfaardt

"All of us involved in the project are driven by the opportunity to make a real difference for this special part of the planet."

Eradicating giant mice from South Africa's Marion Island, a vital haven for seabirds. The vast, wild Southern Ocean is home to albatrosses, petrels and other remarkable seabirds which wander for years on end in search of food.

Only to breed do the seabirds of the Southern Ocean need land, of which there are just a handful of tiny specs. One of these is South Africa's distant Marion Island, which has become overrun by invasive mice, introduced inadvertently by sailors at least two centuries ago. The mice eat the eggs, young and even the adult seabirds.

Now Anton Wolfaardt of BirdLife South Africa and his team have a wild plan to eradicate the mice, with the hope that it will allow seabirds to surge back to their historic abundance.

Protecting Costa Rica’s wilderness with Andy Whitworth

Liberated from low productivity, highly damaging cattle ranching, much of western Costa Rica is returning to forest. On the Osa Peninsula, a place of verdant green hills and white beaches, Andy and his team are focused on plans to reintroduce white-lipped peccaries, giant anteaters, harpy eagles and various other vital missing species.

This episode’s release coincides with World Rewilding Day 2024, with this year’s theme being Hope Into Action. A great example of this in practice is the work being carried out by Jonathan Thomson who has created the twenty-two acre wild paradise Underhill Nature Reserve on the border of Wiltshire and Dorset in southern England.

A lot of people wonder how to go about rewilding smaller patches of land. The answer can be found in playing the role of the keystone species yourself! Saving Florida’s Everglades with Steve Davis

The Everglades, North America’s largest and most vital wetland, is a place of extraordinary beauty but is facing enormous problems. The immense ‘river of grass’ has been desperately disfigured, principally by ill-considered hydrological engineering and heavily subsidised industrial sugar production.

In this episode Ben Goldsmith is joined by Steve Davies, lead scientist of The Everglades Foundation, which is leading efforts to restore the Everglades to health. Now the vast sheet of water is beginning to flow south once again, in the way that it should, and wildlife is resurgent.

Floridians have come to understand that the Everglades underpin everything they have and everything they do, from fresh water to flood defence to the sandy beaches on which Florida’s tourism industry depends. Restoring one of Africa’s most magical landscapes with Andreia Pawel

Andreia Pawel is from ORKCA, the Orange River-Karoo Conservation Area, based in the south of Namibia. The country is made up primarily of desert but once was a the place where springbok migrations dwarfed those of modern day zebra and wildebeest.

Andriea and her team have partnered with local landowners to secure areas surrounding the Orange River with the plan to create a 2.5 million acre reserve. They are working to reintroduce the wildlife that one lived there, restoring the landscape to its full vibrancy for the benefit of local communities and nature.

Protecting Portugal with Pedro Prata

“What we are doing is to create the conditions, ecological and sociological, for the return of these two large predators that are present… but we need to find conditions for them to settle and to grow.”

Drive through Portugal and you will see vast plantations of non-native species like eucalyptus and pine. But with these plants comes the demise of the ecosystem and a huge risk of fire; in 2017 more than 100 people died in forest fires that were able to cross huge swathes of land and even dams.

Pedro Prata is helping to restore great swathes of Portugal and provide spaces for native species to thrive, including lynx and wolves. Through buying patches of land Rewilding Portugal is creating a mosaic of areas to reintroduce native animals and plant species with the hope they will spill out to the surrounding areas.

Creating a haven along Turkey’s Turquoise Coast with Zafer Kizilkaya

The world’s oceans have been depleted of many important species through overfishing. Removing parts of the sea’s ecosystem and the introduction of invasive species can have far reaching consequences both in and on the water.

Zafer Kizilkaya is an award winning conservationist. In 2012 he founded the Mediterranean Conservation Society which built and oversaw Turkey’s first community-managed Marine Protected Area. These MPAs have now expanded along the Turquoise Coast and have seen balance returning to their ecosystems. Zafer also helped to reduce the number of invasive species by encouraging local fishermen to catch lionfish and rabbitfish, and for local fine-dining chefs to include them on the menus in their restaurants.

Shining a light on Kazakhstan’s Golden Steppe with Mark Day

“As Kazakhstan became part of the Soviet Union a whole series of very large transformations took place. 45 million hectares of land within Kazakhstan was simply ploughed under the Virgin Lands campaign.”

Mark Day is from the RSPB and part of the team delivering a project covering 180 million acres in Kazakhstan and Central Asia. The Altyn Dala, an area the size of France and Germany combined, is a huge grassland that once may have rivalled the Serengeti.

The Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative has been working for almost 20 years to save the critically endangered saiga antelope and establish new protected areas. Last year, its success received recognition from the United Nations, which named the project among its first 10 World Restoration Flagships.

Rewilding the desert with Dr Stephen Browne

“If you combine all of these reserves together they constitute an area of about 200,000 square kilometres... it’s probably one of the world’s largest terrestrial protected areas.”

Saudi Arabia is huge - almost ten times the size of Britain - and is well known for its deserts. However, once upon a time it had savannahs akin to those in East Africa, where once lived ostriches and striped hyenas and large predators like leopards and cheaters. A lot of that habitat has now gone following the arrival of motorcars, guns and livestock.

In this episode Ben Goldsmith talks to Dr Stephen Browne who is in charge of a huge programme of wildlife reintroduction and rehabilitation at the Royal Commission for AlUla. In 2023 it plans to release more than 1500 animals including oryx, gazelles and ibex into its reserves.

Protecting millions of acres in Chile and Argentina with Kristine Tompkins

“I thought well I can die tomorrow, it’s fine, they are back.”

Kristine Tompkins is founder of Tompkins Conservation and former chief executive of the outdoor-apparel company Patagonia. She and her late husband Douglas have been pioneers of rewilding since the beginning of the movement.

The couple purchased millions of acres of land across Chile and Argentina to restore to wilderness. Kristine speaks to Ben Goldsmith about her rewilding journey spanning the past three decades, including the reintroduction of jaguars.

Why Spain is breaking down its dams with Pao Fernández Garrido

“I think people are afraid that we want to remove all the dams in the world.”

Dams can effectively act as concrete straight jackets. Weirs and dams and other obstructions cause all kinds of harm, some of which we understand and much of which we don’t.

More than one million barriers are thought to exist in Europe’s rivers, with many of them over 100 years old. Some are old and obsolete, serving no economic or environmental purpose.

Spain is leading the way in the number of structures being removed from its rivers. In this episode Ben Goldsmith speaks to Pao Fernández Garrido from Dam Removal Europe about why the movement is taking such a hold there.

Creating ‘European Yellowstone’ in the Carpathian mountains with Christoph Promberger

“If there is tens of thousands of hectares on the market then you might as well use them for conservation.”

Christoph Promberger from Carpathia Wilderness Reserve, is rewilding an enormous woodland across Transylvania, Carpathia and Romania. He joins Ben Goldsmith from his home at the foot of the Carpathian mountains, a range which stretches through seven countries and home to some of Europe’s rarest large mammals including brown bears, lynx and wolves.

Over the last few decades the area has been affected by logging and lots of pristine forest has been lost. Christoph and Barbara have been fighting this deforestation through buying land in an attempt to protect it.

Deli is leading a project in the Iberian Highlands, the name given to an area of land stretching from Madrid and Barcelona of almost one million hectares. There, entire landscapes are returning to ecological health and populations of iconic wildlife such as wolves and bears are recovering.
