More than a melody: The unstoppable spirit of Tony Melendez

Tony Melendez, a renowned toe-picking Catholic guitarist born without arms, says let God use you, take you to places, and you be the instrument that God plays. Melendez's life was forever changed in 1987 when he played his guitar for Pope John Paul II in Los Angeles, and the Pope approached him afterward from the stage to kiss him in appreciation. Melendez says his phone hasn't stopped ringing since that moment, and he continues to perform 15-20 concerts a month.

On this latest episode of Beyond The Beacon, Melendez recounts this story and more with the Diocese of Paterson's Bishop Kevin Sweeney and Communications Director Jai Agnish before taking the stage for a concert at Sacred Heart & Our Lady Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Parish in Dover, N.J.

Walking with a future saint? Lo Anne Mayer on her friendship with Fulton Sheen

What was it like to be friends with possible future saint Archbishop Fulton Sheen? For this episode, we hear from Lo Anne Mayer, formerly of Corpus Christi Parish in Chatham Township, N.J., of the Diocese of Paterson, N.J.

Mayer struck up a friendship with the beloved, world-renowned Catholic radio and TV evangelist in 1974 after hearing him speak at Christ the King Church in the New Vernon neighborhood of Harding Township, N.J.

The two would speak a couple of times a week over the phone until he died in 1979. Archbishop Sheen sought out her views on particular topics to help make his talks more relevant to his audience.

Sheen baptized Lo Anne and her husband Raymond’s youngest child, Michael, at Corpus Christi in 1975.

She joins Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney of the Diocese of Paterson, N.J., and co-host Communications Director Jai Agnish to recount the stories of her close friendship with Archbishop Sheen. We also discuss some of Archbishop Sheen's other ties to the Diocese of Paterson.

Lo Anne, 85, now living in Manchester, N.J., heard the news on March 25 that Archbishop Sheen — now Venerable Fulton J. Sheen — is getting a step closer to sainthood. With joy, she plans to attend with her family the Mass of his beatification, where he will be designated as “blessed.” This will take place on Thursday, Sept. 24, at The Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis, Mo.

John Fanta: Sports broadcaster, storyteller and man of faith

We talk sports and faith with John Fanta, a prominent national broadcaster at NBC Sports, who attends Mass with his wife and young son at Our Lady of the Magnificat Church in Kinnelon, N.J. He joins Bishop Kevin Sweeney and Communications Director Jai Agnish of the Diocese of Paterson, N.J.

John went to Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J., where he became deeply involved with the Pirate Sports Network, WSOU radio, and student journalism, and laid the foundation for his national broadcasting career.

But his first break came when his first-grade teacher recognized John's talent for singing and encouraged him to be a cantor and lector at St. Bernadette Church in Westlake, Ohio, where he grew up.

Bishop Kevin also discusses the establishment of a new parish, Padre Pio, in Paterson, N.J., on April 12 (Divine Mercy Sunday).

A new religious community is inspiring students in Paterson

We welcome three religious sisters from the Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma, Michigan, involved with the religious education program at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Paterson, N.J. We learn about their work with the Compostela catechetical program and how they came to be the newest religious community in the Diocese of Paterson.

The guests are Sister Moira Debono, R.S.M., the community’s local superior, and Msgr. Geno Sylva, rector of St. John’s and diocesan vicar for special projects; Sister Mary Mia Menke, R.S.M.; and Sister Paul Miriam MacInnes, R.S.M. Hosted by Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney and Communications Director Jai Agnish.

The Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma, Mich., is a Catholic religious congregation founded in 1973. They are rooted in the charism and legacy of Mother Catherine McAuley, the founder of the first Sisters of Mercy, with the opening of her House of Mercy in Dublin, Ireland, in 1827. The institute focuses on service in education and health care.

The Compostela Catechetical After-School Program is unlike any program in Paterson. All children from kindergarten to eighth grade are welcome! The word “Compostela” translates to “field of stars.” Compostela is attended by children all around the schools of Paterson. They enjoy a snack and play in the beautiful courtyard on the side of the Cathedral or our gymnasium. They also receive daily Catechetical lessons through activities or music classes and get help with homework from our qualified staff and volunteers.

Priest, beggar, hero: Inside the world of Father Al and the Sisters of Mary

Biographer Kevin Wells discusses "one of the greatest stories in the Church today," the life and work of "Father Al" and the Sisters of Mary. He shares insights from his book, "Priest and Beggar: The Heroic Life of Venerable Aloysius Schwartz." Hosted by the Diocese of Paterson's Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney and Communications Director Jai Agnish.

Venerable Aloysius Philip Schwartz was a devoted Catholic priest known for his unwavering commitment to serving the poor. He founded the Sisters of Mary congregation and the World Villages for Children, focusing on providing education, shelter, and care for destitute children worldwide. Through his tireless efforts, Father Schwartz transformed countless lives, establishing Boystown and Girlstown programs that have helped over 170,000 children. His selfless work continues to inspire, and he was declared "Venerable" by Pope Francis in 2015.

Wells also details the special pilgrimage to Mexico with Bishop Sweeney in September to Our Lady of Guadalupe, and to spend some time with the Sisters of Mary at Girlstown.

How to use social media as a positive Catholic influence in the world today

With the Catholic Church more mainstream in today’s culture, Catholic influencers are on the rise. So much so that the Vatican recently celebrated the Jubilee of Digital Missionaries and Catholic Influencers.

We welcome guests Father Cesar Jaramillo and Salesian Sister Guerline Joseph, who know a thing or two about making connections on social media. They discuss with Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney and Cecile Pagliarulo -- who manages the social media accounts for the Diocese of Paterson -- how they use their digital presence as a positive influence in the world today.

To begin the episode, Bishop Sweeney is joined by Communications Director Jai Agnish to discuss current events, including the death of Father Rafael Ciro and the September 11 attacks.

Through his Instagram account, Father Cesar posts about moments of his priesthood, which include the historic time of being in Rome during the conclave and the election of Pope Leo XIV.

Sister Joseph helps run her community’s account, showing the lives of Salesian Sisters in action.

Father Jaramillo was recently named pastor of Holy Spirit Parish and School in Pequannock, N.J., and serves in the Diocesan Tribunal Office. Sister Joseph serves as associate director for youth and young adult ministry for the Archdiocese of Newark.

A high school president shares lessons from year 1

Brian Vohden is going into his second year as president of Morris Catholic High School. On this episode, he shares with Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney and Jai Agnish what his first year was like and what he's looking forward to as a new school year begins.

Vohden attended Catholic School in the diocese and worked at Pope John XXIII Regional High School and the Catholic Academy of Sussex County for 19 years, serving in both teaching and administrative roles.

Morris Catholic High School is a faith-based, college-prep high school where students are known by name, challenged academically, and formed as leaders for life. The school is rooted in Catholic values and welcomes families of all backgrounds who want a school that forms the whole person: mind, heart, and spirit.

What it's like to love and accompany homeless, pregnant women

"I just need a place to sleep," said a pregnant woman living in her car and washing up for work in a public bathroom. Another woman, a pregnant college student abandoned by her family, insisted on giving birth to her child. These are real-life stories of women in crisis pregnancy situations who received the help they needed from an organization called Birth Haven. Tina Magarino, the executive director of the non-profit, is a guest on this week's episode, along with Alyssa Renovales, the Respect Life coordinator for the Diocese of Paterson.

Birth Haven is an independent, nonsectarian, non-profit organization that provides shelter, support, and education for homeless, pregnant women and girls. Tina is passionate about helping single mothers recognize the barriers they face and overcome obstacles to break the cycle of homelessness. Birth Haven is located in Newton, N.J., in Sussex County and is one of many organizations listed on the Diocese of Paterson's Respect Life Ministry webpage as a resource for moms.

Alyssa shares her perspective and also discusses what it was like at the Jubilee of Youth in Rome, where she was earlier this month with a million other Catholic youths.

Clergy abuse survivor shares his powerful story of hope, healing

Clergy abuse survivor Mark Joseph Williams joins Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney and Jai Agnish to share his powerful story of confronting the suffering caused by abuse. Williams is the author of “Torrent of Grace: A Catholic Survivor's Healing Journey after Clergy Abuse,” in which he details spiraling into substance abuse and shame in the aftermath of trauma. He finds hope and healing in a place few survivors would look—The Catholic Church. He is a forensic psychological clinician with an MS in Social Work from Columbia University. Williams co-founded Global Collaborative, a survivor-led organization, and represents the Archdiocese of Newark as a special advisor. He also serves on the North American Safeguarding Committee of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Williams lives in New Jersey with his wife, Karen, and they have four grown children and seven grandchildren.

Opportunities for God's grace in the season of Lent

As we look to Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent, Bishop Kevin Sweeney offers practical advice about the Lenten practices of fasting, almsgiving, and prayer. Guest Father Jared Brogan joins Bishop Kevin and Jai Agnish to help illuminate the meaning and purpose of these traditions. Lent is a 40-day season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends at sundown on Holy Thursday. It's a period of preparation to celebrate the Lord's Resurrection at Easter. Sister of Christian Charity Chiara Marie Stimpfle, Franciscan Father John Aherne, and Franciscan Father of the Renewal Isaac Spinharney also share insights into prayer, retreats, and living in community. Bishop Kevin also reflects on the state of immigration enforcement in America and the recent letter from Pope Francis to the United States bishops expressing concern at mass deportations. "Are we treating each and every person like Jesus [and] as our sister and brother?" the bishop asks.

For this remote episode, Bishop Kevin Sweeney and Jai Agnish visited All Saints Academy, a preschool through eighth-grade Catholic school of the Diocese of Paterson in Parsippany, N.J. The episode was recorded at St. Ann Church, where classes were being held temporarily. Joining them for interviews were Principal Leanne Gonzalez, Media Specialist Laura Carroll, and students Giulliana Lalo, Maggie Van Hoven, Matthew Sinche, and Grace Kwiatkowski. They discuss their close-knit school community, Catholic Schools Week, and learning and promoting "digital citizenship." After recording the episode, Bishop Kevin and Jai participated in a Q&A with students in the eighth-grade media internship program at All Saints Academy who had observed the recording.

March For Life: The powerful movement continues after 52 years

On Jan. 24, 2025, the 52nd annual National March for Life will take place in Washington, D.C., bringing together pro-life advocates to be a voice for the voiceless.

Two frequent attendees of the March, Julie McGurn, a parishioner of St. Vincent Martyr Church in Madison and coordinator of its Respect Life Ministry, and Russell Petrocelli, principal of DePaul Catholic High School in Wayne and state treasurer of the N.J. Knights of Columbus, discuss their experiences in the movement. Along with Bishop Kevin Sweeney and Cecile Pagliarulo, the guests also discuss how the faithful can bring a culture of life to the world.

This week, several students who attend DePaul Catholic High School in Wayne tackle this question with Bishop Kevin Sweeney and Cecile Pagliarulo. They also discuss how campus ministry has led them to build closer relationships with God. Led by the school’s campus minister, Annamaria Zaccardi, the students participate in service projects to help those most in need and assist with Masses and prayer services. They also participate in youth conferences and retreats.

Reworking the way we share the stories of our faith

Happy Thanksgiving from Bishop Kevin Sweeney, Jai Agnish, Cecile Pagliarulo, and all of us in the Communications Office of the Diocese of Paterson, N.J.! On this week's episode, Bishop Kevin and Jai discuss the difficult decision to close the print edition of The Beacon. It was recently announced The Diocese of Paterson would cease printing its beloved newspaper at the end of the year, concluding a 58-year publication run at the helm of four different bishops. The Beacon will live on in its new form: Beaconnj.org, where the important stories of our faith community will continue to be passed along. Bishop Kevin also shares highlights of his experience with his brother bishops at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Fall assembly in Baltimore, Md., earlier this month. He also discusses the unfortunate situation of donations that went missing from a FedEx drop box on Oct. 30 and Oct. 31.

What does the Synod on Synodality mean for the future of the Catholic Church, and will anything change in the Diocese of Paterson? Bishop Kevin Sweeney and Jai Agnish welcome Father Paul Manning and Maria Moncaleano back to Beyond The Beacon to discuss all this and more. Father Paul is the vicar for evangelization for the diocese, and Maria is the director of the diocese's Office of Hispanic Ministry. This remote episode was recorded at the temporary location of The Father English Food Pantry in the heart of Paterson near St. Joseph's University Medical Center. Bishop Kevin Sweeney and Jai Agnish welcome Carlos Roldan and Tim Potter to the show. Carlos is the long-time founder and director of the food pantry going back to 1993. Tim has been the chief fundraising superhero for the diocese for the last 31 years. His formal title is Chief Development Officer, and he has, yet again, spearheaded the launch of our Diocesan Ministries Appeal – now underway.

We hosted a unique media event with Bishop Kevin Sweeney and America Media's Jesuitical on Sept. 11. The cohosts of the popular podcast -- Ashley McKinless and Zac Davis -- interviewed Bishop Kevin in front of a live audience at our St. Paul Inside the Walls evangelization center in Madison, N.J. The interview covered a wide array of important topics and drew a ton of laughs. The unique role of deacons in our faith life

Catholic higher education in the mainstream secular world

Dr. Peter Kilpatrick, the president of The Catholic University of America, joins Bishop Kevin Sweeney to discuss the challenges of leading a Catholic university in an increasingly secularized culture. Born a Methodist, he also talks about his faith journey, which led him to become Catholic after becoming a father. Kilpatrick discusses his diverse career path which wound through Illinois Institute of Technology and the University of Notre Dame. He holds or shares 12 patents in chemical engineering and said the awe-inspiring scientific discoveries of the last 50 to 100 years lead us to God.

Also joining is guest co-host Father Paul Manning, diocesan vicar for evangelization for the Diocese of Paterson and co-host of the Coffee with Kupke podcast. This episode, 66, was recorded in the St. Paul Inside the Walls studio in Madison, N.J.

Kilpatrick is the 16th president of The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He was in the diocese to lead a special event titled, “The Future of Partnerships Between Catholic and Secondary Higher Education: Preparing Tomorrow’s Leaders for the Church and the World.”

Sacerdote regresa a Cuba para un año de misión

El Padre Dailon Lisabet es oriundo de Cuba y emigro a los EE.UU. cuando tenia 19 años. Llego a Nueva Jersey, donde fue ordenado sacerdote para la Diocesis de Paterson en el 2019. Las semillas de su llamado al sacerdocio comenzaron a germinar cuando aun era un dolescente, en Cuba. Alli establecio una mision para niños pobres a traves de su parroquia y condujo a muchos al bautismo. Ahora el P. Dailon se prepara para regresar a sup ais natal como sacerdote misionero por un año. Monseñor Sweeney hablara acerca de esto y mucho mas con el P. Dailon en el episodio #64 de Beyond The Beacon. El P. Dailon tambien sirvio como vicario parroquial de Santa Margarita de Escocia, en Morristown, por cinco años.

Priest returns to Cuba for a special mission year

Father Dailon Lisabet left Cuba for the United States when he was 19 years old and found his way to New Jersey where he was ordained a priest of the diocese in 2019. In many ways, the seeds of his priestly calling began as a teenager in Cuba where he established a mission to impoverished children through his church and led many youths to be baptized. Now Father Dailon is set to return to his home country as a mission priest for a year. Bishop Kevin Sweeney and Jai Agnish discuss all this and more with Father Dailon on episode 64 of Beyond The Beacon. Father Dailon also served as parochial vicar at St. Margaret of Scotland Church in Morristown for five years.

Exploring the diocesan archives for the first time

Bishop Kevin Sweeney tours the diocesan archives for the first time in a special simulpodcast episode of Beyond The Beacon and Coffee with Kupke. With the help of historian, archivist, and pastor Msgr. Ray Kupke, the bishop unearths some of the oldest treasures of the diocese. These include vintage mitres worn by Bishop James Navagh, Bishop Thomas Aloysius Boland’s desk calendar from 1948, the deed to St. Vincent Martyr parish in Madison on vellum from the original owners of the property from 1863, a historic confirmation prayer book in Latin, and more!

The National Eucharistic Congress has concluded. Now what?

On Beyond The Beacon episode 62, meet two couples, who recently returned from the National Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis, Ind. Dr. Tobi and Anne Ippolito, who are parents of three grown children, are parishioners of Holy Family Church in Florham Park. Tobi is currently a diaconate candidate, Anne is a master’s of theology student and they have classes together at Seton Hall University.

Also joining are Deacon Eric and Debby Kispert, parishioners of Notre Dame of Mount Carmel Church in the Cedar Knolls neighborhood of Hanover Township. They have two grown sons, a daughter-in-law, and their first grandchild is on the way. The couple is active in several ministries at their parish.

Joining Bishop Kevin Sweeney, who also attended the Congress, and Cecile Pagliarulo, the two couples discuss how the experience impacted their faith, and the inspiration they received to continue ministering to the Church.

What are the old and new ways Franciscans pass on the faith?

Each of our guests is a priest. One is a doctor and educator, another a future immigration lawyer, and the other has a heart for social justice at the border, on death row, on the streets, and in his suburban backyard. They are Father Chris VanHaight, O.F.M., Father Matthew Pravetz, O.F.M., and Father Emmet Murphy, O.F.M. These Franciscan friars have traveled diverse paths and currently live and work in the Diocese of Paterson.

They join Bishop Kevin Sweeney and Jai Agnish for episode 61 of Beyond The Beacon to discuss how they live out the Franciscan charism.

They live in community. Father Chris is the guardian of the friar’s retirement house in Butler, N.J. on the grounds of St. Anthony of Padua parish, where Father Matt is pastor, and where Father Emmet can be found saying his morning prayers and helping at the parish food pantry.

In Latin, it translates to “Quo Vadis” and in Beyond The Beacon episode 60 learn what that means as we travel again on location to Shiloh Bible Camp in West Milford, N.J. for the 2024 Quo Vadis discernment retreat.

Bishop Kevin Sweeney interviews six young men on the retreat from several parishes in the diocese: Rory Lago, Assumption Parish in Morristown; Juan Real and Jacob Gonzalez, both from Our Lady of Fatima and St. Nicholas Parish in Passaic; Stephen Howell, St. Lawrence Parish in Chester; Gabriel Nelson, Sacred Heart Parish in Rockaway and Zachary Riesett, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Boonton. Also making appearances are Father Krzysztof Tyszko, newly appointed parochial vicar at Assumption Parish in Morristown, who has attended Quo Vadis 14 times, and Eric Hasenbein, a newly accepted seminarian of the Diocese.

58: 'Hollywood priest' ministers to the stars and makes films

Paulist Father Tom Gibbons, a New Jersey native, joins Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney and Jai Agnish to discuss ministering in Hollywood while producing and directing films of his own with Paulist Productions. His new documentary "Hollywood Priest: The Story of Fr. 'Bud' Kieser" is an entertaining, provocative, and nostalgic chronicle of a visionary who recognized early on the potential of television and film to shape public consciousness. In the documentary, a star-studded cast of actors and writers describe working with Father Kieser and the importance of TV shows and films like "Insight" and "Romero." Father Kieser's work was revolutionary in its approach to weaving religious and ethical questions into narratives that appealed to a broad audience, proving that faith-based media could be both engaging and thought-provoking.

"Hollywood Priest: The Story of Fr. 'Bud' Kieser" is airing on television and is available to watch on the free PBS app.

Father Tom grew up in Washington Township and attended Mass at St. Lawrence the Martyr Church in Chester. He became a priest later at an older age and is now, like Father Kieser before him, working in the movie industry in Hollywood as a Catholic priest. Father Tom is vice president of Paulist Productions: a faith-based production company in the Catholic tradition based in Los Angeles, Calif. that seeks to create media content that reveals God's presence in the contemporary human experience.

56: Vibrant college for religious sisters transforms the world

“Teach a sister, touch the world!” This is the motto of Assumption College for Sisters, an accredited college sponsored by the Sisters of Christian Charity (SCC), which educates religious sisters called to consecrated life from the Paterson Diocese and around the world.

On episode 56, Beyond The Beacon hits the road again, recording on location on the Morris Catholic High School campus in Denville, where this one-of-a-kind college is located. Two international students, Sister Violete Lemla, SST, a third-year student from Cameroon, and Sister Theresa Lan Nguyen, MRP, a second-year student from Vietnam, share their experiences at the college, about their vocation and simply living in the United States. 55: Military chaplains explain the special significance of Memorial Day

Two priests join Bishop Kevin Sweeney and Jai Agnish to discuss what life is like as chaplains for the United States Armed Forces. Bishop Kevin also offers a special Memorial Day blessing.

Guests Father Michael Parisi and Father Matt Pawlikowski have over 50 years of combined military service. Father Parisi was commissioned in the Navy Chaplain Corps in 1988 where he served in various capacities, including his last assignment with the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in Connecticut. He is now pastor of St. Catherine Parish in Mountain Lakes, N.J., and is one of the two vicars general of the Diocese of Paterson.

Father Pawlikowski is a retired U.S. Army chaplain and veteran with 28 years of service and has spent time in Egypt, Haiti, Germany, and Afghanistan. He is a graduate of West Point where he currently works as a civilian chaplain with 9 other military chaplains. He is a diocesan priest of the Archdiocese of Newark.

53: Miracles in Lourdes: love and healing to the sick

While every Catholic pilgrimage site offers a journey of spiritual wonder, the mission of a Lourdes pilgrimage is specific: bringing love and healing to the sick.

On Beyond the Beacon episode 53, Bishop Kevin Sweeney discusses with Jai Agnish, diocesan communications director, his recent pilgrimage to Lourdes, France with the Order of Malta. In 1858, the Blessed Mother appeared on 18 occasions to Bernadette Soubirous, a very poor, 14-year-old girl. Each May, Knights, Dames, Auxiliary and volunteers from the Order of Malta travel to Lourdes, France as pilgrims, bringing with them sick and disabled from around the world. The Order of Malta is committed to reaching their spiritual perfection within the Church and to expending their energies serving the poor and the sick.

The bishop also reflects on the feast of Blessed Miriam Teresa Demjanovich, Ascension Day (which falls on a Sunday in the Paterson Diocese), Mother’s Day and other upcoming happenings in the Paterson Diocese.

52: The Catholic annulment: when love isn't happily ever after

Sometimes, when a man and a woman enter a marriage with the best of intentions, it may still end badly. Thankfully, the Catholic Church has a process to determine if a marriage that ended badly may be declared invalid. The process is called an annulment.

On Beyond the Beacon’s 52nd episode, Father Marc Mancini, judicial vicar of the Paterson Diocese, joins Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney and Communications Director Jai Agnish to talk about the annulment process and share information for those Catholics wanting to know more about it.

In addition to his work in the tribunal office, Father Marc also serves as pastor of St. James the Marches Church, Totowa, and its parish school, the Academy of St. James.

48: Sisterhood ministry brings love and hope to women after miscarriage

What does “I am 1 in 4” mean? There’s a population of women who know exactly what this means firsthand. It means they lost a child through miscarriage.

On Episode 48 of Beyond the Beacon, Jennifer Nelson joins Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney and Cecile Pagliarulo to discuss the Sisterhood of the Traveling Relics of St. Gianna, a prayer card ministry bonded by St. Gianna Beretta Molla. The “Sisterhood” is an international group of mothers of children on earth and in heaven that includes married women facing infertility and single women with hearts that long to serve others.

Jennifer is the director of Religious Education at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Rockaway, N.J. She wrote an inspiring book, Super J and the Power of Love, which brings readers into the world of a loving and joy-filled child with Down syndrome.

Jennifer has been married to the love of her life, Derek, for 20 years. They have seven saints in training, ages 17-1, and three little ones waiting for them in heaven. She dreams of one day traveling to Milan with her family to see St. Gianna's Shrine in person.

Dennis Dalelio and his oldest son, Eli, -- close friends of Agnish's -- strive to live a life of faith, hope, and love in Vernon, N.J., where they live and are active in catechesis at Our Lady of Fatima. Eli is a 17-year-old senior at Sussex County Technical School. He was confirmed by Bishop Kevin two years ago when he took the confirmation name, Albertus Magnus. Dennis is a long-time photography teacher at Paramus High School. He also volunteers at his parish, taking photos and teaching the faith as an eighth-grade catechist. Dennis has photographed for our diocesan newspaper, The Beacon, and created and hosts the The Stolen Hours podcast. Dennis also designed the artwork for Beyond The Beyond.

How can history inspire our faith? Bishop Kevin Sweeney and Jai Agnish visit Our Lady of the Magnificat in Kinnelon, N.J., for a remote podcast episode. On display in the church narthex is a giant museum-quality photo exhibition of the Shroud of Turin. Tune in to the video version of this episode for the full impact! This week's guest, Father Steven Shadwell, elaborates on how this unique historical experience came to life at his parish. In addition to three life-size photographs of the actual Shroud, the exhibit includes over 40 storyboards depicting various aspects of the history of the Shroud. How do you have a "spiritual conversation?" Father Paul Manning and Maria Moncaleano join Bishop Kevin Sweeney and Jai Agnish to discuss the interim phase of the Synod on Synodality and new listening sessions.

All are welcome to listening sessions hosted by the Diocese of Paterson in English or Spanish on Wednesday, March 13, at Reverend Brown Memorial School in Sparta, from 7 to 9 p.m.; Monday, March 18, at Pope John Paul II Pastoral Center in Clifton, from 7 to 9 p.m.; and Saturday, March 23, at St. Paul Inside the Walls in Madison, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Learn more and register here.

Father Paul is the vicar for Evangelization, and Maria is the director of the Office of Hispanic Ministry. Together, they chair the Diocesan Synod Committee.

How does this journeying together allow the Church to proclaim the Gospel in accordance with the mission entrusted to Her? What steps does the Spirit invite us to take? The Synod on Synodality is a three-year global process of listening and dialogue, beginning with a solemn opening in Rome on Oct. 9 and 10, 2021. The aim of this synodal process is not to provide a temporary or one-time experience of synodality but rather to provide an opportunity for the entire People of God to discern together how to move forward on the path towards being a more synodal Church in the long term.

44: Confession. What's the big deal? Do I really need to go?

Lent -- and any time, really -- is an opportunity for us to consider the sacrament of reconciliation. Not only does penance free us from our sins, but it also challenges us to have the same kind of compassion and forgiveness for those who sin against us.

All are invited to celebrate the gift of forgiveness in the sacrament of reconciliation (confession) at any church in the Diocese of Paterson on Mondays during Lent from 7 to 8:30 p.m. This opportunity for confession is available as part of our Welcome Home to Healing initiative.

For this episode of Beyond the Beacon, Father Jared Brogan joins Bishop Kevin Sweeney and Jai Agnish to discuss the significance of going to confession and more.

Father Jared is the director of the Office of Divine Worship and Master of Ceremonies for the Diocese of Paterson. He was ordained a priest of the Paterson Diocese in 2011 by Bishop Arthur Serratelli. Father Jared has ministered in various capacities throughout his priesthood, including as pastor of St. Catherine of Siena in Mountain Lakes. He served as an assistant vocation director and has been on diocesan committees, the Presbyteral Council, and the College of Consultors for several terms. He is also an adjunct professor at Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology (Seton Hall University) and assists at various parishes on the weekends.

We welcome back Cecile Pagliarulo to discuss the Eucharist's impact on the spiritual life of young adults. Bishop Kevin Sweeney also announces a video contest for two trips to the National Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis this summer. Cecile, who manages social media for the Diocese of Paterson, reveals the contest rules while reflecting on her experience of Eucharistic adoration and her role as a catechist at St. Anthony Church in Passaic. They also discuss many ways the diocese is taking part in the National Eucharistic Revival locally, including offering Eucharistic Adoration nights. Bishop Kevin discusses the uniqueness of Valentine’s Day falling on Ash Wednesday this year and why he prefers not to issue a dispensation. Featured on this episode is 21-time bestselling author Jerry B. Jenkins who has written over 200 books, including his latest entitled, "The Chosen: And I Will Give You Rest." It's the third book in a series based on the record-breaking television series created by his son Dallas Jenkins. Jerry opens up about his son's success with The Chosen and why he thinks the series is so popular. Jerry also discusses the last time "lightning struck" the family with the wild success of the Left Behind series, which he co-authored with Tim LaHaye between 1995 and 2007. He and the bishop reflect on the power of biblical fiction to draw people to Jesus. They also talk baseball because Jerry was a former newspaper sportswriter who began covering sports at the age of 14. He went on to write sports biographies (Hank Aaron, Walter Payton, Nolan Ryan, and Orel Hershiser).

Bishop Kevin also reflects on the tragic suicide death of Passaic County Sheriff Richard H. Berdnik, his funeral, and Church teaching regarding Catholic burials in such situations.

40: A vocation discernment retreat can offer the way forward

Have you ever asked yourself, "What does God want me to do with my life?" The vocations office of the Diocese of Paterson is hosting a discernment retreat during the first weekend of March to help young men get a step closer to answering that question.

For this episode, a young priest and a seminarian join Bishop Kevin Sweeney and Jai Agnish to discuss the discernment process and the value of spiritual retreats.

John Peter Zappe is in his final year of minor seminary undergraduate studies at The College Seminary of the Immaculate Conception at St. Andrew's Hall. Father Frank Lennie was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Paterson in May 2021 by Bishop Kevin. The two young men share their experiences of answering their vocational calling and invite other young men to consider attending the retreat.

Is Bishop Kevin a cat person or a dog person? Tune in to find out!

Bishop Kevin Sweeney invites his Paterson neighbor, John DeCando, onto the show for a fun Beyond The Beacon episode about animals. Together with co-host Jai Agnish, they discuss their four-legged friends, and John recounts some amusing and heroic animal rescue stories from 50 years of working for the city of Paterson. John is a local legend known for saving – not just cats and dogs – but even sheep and a cow running around on Route 80 once. He’s told these wild tales on countless television news reports and even appeared on Late Night with David Letterman. John recently received the honor of a key to the city, and although he spent some time as a police officer and housing inspector over the years, he said that “the good Lord brought him back,” doing what he loves to do: working with animals. John and Bishop Kevin live a couple of blocks away in Paterson and have become good friends. John also is and was friends with the previous two bishops of the diocese.

On the first Beyond The Beacon episode of the new year, Bishop Kevin Sweeney and Jai Agnish are joined by Father Alex Nevitt -- a pilot and a French chef -- to discuss the upcoming pilgrimage to the National Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis in July. Father Alex is coordinating our Diocesan participation in this historic event. We discussed the importance of the pilgrimage and had fun getting to know Father Alex, a relatively new priest who is a parochial vicar serving at Notre Dame of Mt. Carmel in the Cedar Knolls neighborhood of Hanover Township. He's also one of the diocesan prison chaplains, and he and Jai talk about their shared passion for piloting single-engine airplanes.

This week, for episode 36 of Beyond The Beacon (a podcast of the Diocese of Paterson, New Jersey), Bishop Kevin Sweeney and Jai Agnish are joined by two gifted music ministers for a discussion about music's impact on our faith. Preston Dibble is our long-time Director of Music for the diocese. He also works full-time at Our Lady of Sorrows in South Orange in our neighboring Archdiocese of Newark. As he likes to say, he’s a dual citizen of Paterson and Newark. The same can be said of Jen Behnke, our other guest, who is the part-time music coordinator at one of our parishes, Holy Spirit Church in Pequannock. Jen is also the associate director of evangelization for the Archdiocese of Newark and produces and co-hosts The Heart of the Ark podcast.

Bishop Kevin also gives a reflection on the news out of Rome this week regarding blessings for same-sex couples and the Declaration “Fiducia supplicans” issued by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, approved by Pope Francis.

They discuss Mary’s Hands, a social services ministry that operates out of St. Margaret of Scotland Parish in Morristown. Speaking about the ministry is Suzanne Toscano, director of administration, and Teresa Prendergast, director of client services for the ministry.

This life-changing ministry began in 2014 under the auspices of Sister Mary Elizabeth Lloyd, M.P.F. – known affectionately as the running nun. It was formalized as Mary’s Hands in 2019, and this week, Mary’s Hands became an official program of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Paterson.

They welcome Brother Joachim Joseph and Solanyi Rodriguez to discuss their efforts to promote a culture of respect for the dignity and value of every human life. Rodriguez is a pro-life sidewalk counselor who works in our Respect Life Office. She has counseled numerous moms who have decided against aborting their babies. Brother J.J. is a Franciscan Friar of the Renewal who lives at a friary in Paterson. Brother J.J. and his fellow friars pray outside abortion clinics and support single moms with baby supplies.

Bishop Kevin shares a special announcement that beginning in October, he will celebrate a monthly Mass, followed by a peaceful, prayerful procession to a place where abortions are performed or promoted. All are invited to join him in solidarity in this peaceful public witness for life.

Also, near the end of this episode, Bishop Kevin answers some fun questions from sixth graders who attend Assumption School in Morristown.

He has been an addiction professional since 1969, is a member of several national and international organizations, and has taught addiction studies at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. He has lectured to medical and pastoral professional groups throughout the United States and Canada.

He recently relocated from Africa and lives in the New Vernon neighborhood of Harding Township. He assists at the Church of Christ the King there. And he is, for the record, a Baltimore Orioles fan.
