That's right, we're celebrating the anniversary of the release of the 1980s classic comedy The Blues Brothers. Starring Saturday Night Live alumni Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi, the film has endured for over 45 years and become not only a comedy classic but also a work of cultural significance, preserved by the National Film Registry in the Library of Congress.

We are joined once again by Aykroyd and Belushi biographer Daniel de Vise to look back on this "mission from God." Together, we discuss the origins of the film itself—from story and script to casting and production—to its lasting legacy and importance in both comedy and the music of the blues.

But Denny's connection to SNL goes back well before that infamous 1980-81 season. She talks about meeting Gilda Radner before the show even premiered and shares her experiences as a special guest on the third ever episode back in 1975. In addition, we discuss her contribution to Anne Beatts' book "Titters" as well as returning to Studio 8H to be on a children's show prior to starring on SNL.

Denny recounts the extensive audition process she went through at Saturday Night Live, being selected as the last female cast member (beating out a future Oscar winner), and discusses the highs (and lows) of that difficult season. She recounts the uphill battle everyone faced with both the fans and the press while experiencing the thrill of live television and forming bonds that would last for decades.

Late in Season 1, Madeline Kahn hosted for the very first time. Delayed by a technician's strike, the show seemed to utilize the extra time as this is considered (by us at least) the best episode of Saturday Night Live's first season—even if Carly Simon had to pre-tape her musical performance.

This episode includes some of our favorite sketches of the season including an iconic Baba Wawa, an amazing Bride of Frankenstein musical number, the infamous "Final Days" sketch, and the Marilyn Suzanne Miller-written "Slumber Party."

Not only did Anne create the iconic "Nerds," she also contributed to such memorable characters and sketches as Irwin Mainway, Uncle Roy, and "Hard Hats." Her voice was also showcased on commercial parodies like "Jewess Jeans," "Angora Bouquet," and "Chanel."

Fellow original SNL writer Rosie Shuster returns to the podcast to help us look back to remember not only Anne Beatts the writer, but also the person. As the only two female writers when the show began, Anne and Rosie were paired together from the very beginning—forming a partnership that would last throughout the original era.

Rosie recounts her time with Anne from their hilarious first meeting to late night writing sessions and pulling off iconic moments like the very first Roseanne Roseannadanna as well as discussing how Anne's work on the show's pre-tapes helped pave the way for the rest of her career. In addition, she recounts how Anne fought for equality in the writers room, kept control over her characters, and brought a sense of style and humor to everything she did.

Anne Beatts was a 5-time Emmy nominee, winning for SNL's first season. She also won a Writer's Guild Award for her work on the Saturday Night Live 25th Anniversary Special. Aside from her work on SNL, Anne created the sitcom, Square Pegs (starring Sarah Jessica Parker) and was a producer on A Different World.

We had two choices—postpone the recording and try to reschedule with our unprofessional guest or just push on and record with two guys who have only a surface-level knowledge of Andy Kaufman, skimped on the research (since they were supposed to have an expert on the show), but did spend the time watching the special. We decided to press on, by ourselves, and record our own look back on the special.

At the end of the day, we chose not to put the episode out. Not because the episode isn't good (we think it is) but because it wasn't AS GOOD as it could have been. But, in going through the vaults of stuff we have after the end of "The Early Years of SNL," we thought it would be fun to share now.

So enjoy our look back on the very first Andy Kaufman television special that is at times very interesting, at other times very befuddling, and at many times very entertaining. Andy brings back many (if not all) of his classic bits and welcomes guest stars like Cindy Williams, Howdy Doody, and Wendy Polland (who?).

Fridays would repackage almost all of SNL's key components—it would air live, it would have sketch comedy from an unknown troupe, there would be a fake news segment, and there would be musical guests. But to be different, the show would be shot on the west coast and—in the beginning—would not have a host. Some might say it would also not be as funny.

Lasting only three seasons, and (for a while) hard to find after that, the show would live on primarily as a footnote in the history of its inspiration. But, as is often the case, looking back on something after 40+ years gives new perspective.

We highlight Anne's work in this VINTAGE episode of "The Early Years of SNL," which features one of the most memorable outings from some of her most beloved characters—The Nerds. In this Season Three finale, "Nerds Prom"—coming unsurprisingly in the prime "post-monologue" slot—not only continues to build on the world of Todd & Lisa but introduces the character of Marshall (Todd's father), played to perfection by host Buck Henry.

This classic original era episode has Buck in an excellent Olympia Café sketch, working with a "Stunt Puppy," attending the "Sodom Chamber of Commerce," and (of course) visiting with the Samurai. In addition, we are treated to one of the most eclectic musical guests in SNL history in Sun Ra.

In honor of his hilarious new memoir, Never Mind the Happy: Showbiz Stories From a Sore Winner, we talked with Marc about a brief, but pivotal, section early in his career – Saturday Night Live. Beginning as a freelance performer during the Dick Ebersol years, he began backing up cast members such as Julia Louis-Dreyfus and went on to form life-long friendships with the likes of Martin Short and Billy Crystal. When Lorne Michaels returned to the show, he was hired as a full-time writer and helped create one of the most iconic recurring characters of SNL’s second Golden Era – The Sweeney Sisters.

Marc talks about working on SNL with Jan Hooks, Phil Hartman, Maya Rudolph, Paul Shaffer, Steve Martin, and Mary Tyler Moore, as well as shares hilarious behind-the-scenes tales about Bill Murray, William Shatner, Paul McCartney, and Prince! He also tells the story of meeting, working, and living with Bette Midler (when he was only a teenager), discusses his decades-long relationship working with Rob Reiner, and reveals the most outrageous story from his book.

Steve hosting Saturday Night Live gets overshadowed by one of the very few people who could pull off such a feat at the time – Paul McCartney. Hiding out in London after his public drug bust, the ex-Beatle was supposed to open the show. But, due to the time change, a mix-up ensued and the runner about getting Paul on the air (he’s debuting the video for his first solo single in 10 years) is the centerpiece of this episode.

The episode is fine and Steve does a good job of having fun (especially when paired with Bill or Gilda), but one of SNL’s greatest hosts leaves the original era on a whimper.

The show doesn’t stray far from the host’s strong suit, but is that a good thing? We’re not sure. But one thing that is certain – if you’re a Bob Newhart fan you’ll enjoy this episode.

The writing is smart, the performances are on point, and the laughs are plentiful. You don’t even have to be familiar with what the show is satirizing to get the jokes (as one of us shamefully is called out about). To top it all off, The Specials – in their first US television appearance – deliver one of the most energized performances of the season. Top to bottom, everything in this episode clicks – so much so that even we are hard-pressed to find something to complain about with this one.

If that wasn’t enough to get excited about, we are joined one last time by our dear friend Thomas Sena from “The Podcast Which Shall Not Be Named.” We couldn’t ask for a better final guest as we look to bring S5 and the original era of Saturday Night Live to a close!

But Andy's connection with Saturday Night Live goes way back. His friendship with Chevy Chase predates the show and his first short film was one of the best pieces included in Mr. Mike's Mondo Video. He also has a really great one in the Burt Reynolds episode from Season 5 - so good that it prompted us to go out and track him down.

We talk to Andy about ALL his short “disaster” films (including some he did for Sesame Street), his time as a writer on the short-lived The Chevy Chase Show, and working on such film classics as Apocalypse Now, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi.

This episode is well-known for the difficulties it had finding material for the host and it shows. Much of what was delivered manages to offend early and often. And, Burt pretty much plays Burt this episode regardless of what the name of his character is and doesn’t seem to be having too much fun doing so. But, he sure likes to chew gum.

However, the show does finish strong with a GREAT short film and a couple of decent sketches with Burt and Gilda (including the final appearance of Baba Wawa).

Oh, and Anne Murray is back (somehow) as the musical guest.

Matt shares why he turned down the offer to write for Saturday Night Live in Season 1, eventually joined the show for Season 5, and then returned once more after the firing of Jean Doumanian in Season 6.  In addition to his time working on SNL, Matt talks about visiting the show during its first season, contributing sketches during its second, and helping write the Bob & Ray, Jane, Laraine, & Gilda special during Season 4.

As the one established writer to join the staff at the start of Season 5, Matt has a unique perspective on how the final season of the original era unfolded.  He takes us from the pre-season “retreat” that was held in upstate New York all the way through the final send-off of the season finale – on which he is featured in the monologue (which he helped write).

Along the way we are treated to a firsthand account of one of the most infamously bad sketches in show history (by the man who wrote it), getting a private concert by Bob Dylan, and what impact– if any – the first competition to Saturday Night Live’s dominance would have.

Unfortunately for them, this is a weird episode of Saturday Night Live to walk into – not bad (not at all), just weird.   Especially if you haven’t been following the show up to this point.  While both Benjamin and Prentiss deliver fine performances, they are rarely on screen together. That, coupled with almost a full episode of “slice of life” sketches, makes this a very interesting watch. Even the appearance of some classic recurring characters feels off. 

Did our wives enjoy watching a 45-year-old comedy program? And would they come back and do it again? 

Speaking of returns, The Grateful Dead are back to sing a couple of tunes from their upcoming album.

For the first time, Saturday Night Live goes without a proper host, relying instead on a slew of cameos. From Michael O’Donoghue and John Belushi (twice!) to Ralph Nader, Michael Palin, and NYS senator Daniel Moynihan - apparently NOT related to Bobby - who pops up twice. And, if you look closely, current Paul Simon girlfriend Carrie Fisher sneaks into a sketch.  All of which add to a show that while entertaining, often feels discombobulated.

But don’t worry!  Friend of the show Paul Simon returns (of course) to sing a few songs alongside James Taylor (who also appears in a sketch). And, in keeping with this episode’s spirit of sharing the wealth, SNL-bandmember David Sanborn also plays a song.

Unfortunately, he isn’t given much to play with. The highlight of this episode just might be the monologue, where Rodney shows why he is one of the best. After that, there are a series of sketches that run the gamut from questionable to tired to downright offensive. Though it must be said that the Murray Brothers do come through near the end with a really great sketch.

The J. Geils Band do their best as musical guest to inject a little life into this one. But is it enough?

We are joined by Jason Morris, of the amazing Classic SNL Reviews blog, to talk about this episode of Saturday Night Live - one that is near and dear to his heart.

How did it turn out? Well…the show opens with Douglas doing what looks to be a Dorf impression. And it only gets better from there. 

As “The Early Years” of SNL get closer to its end, we start to say goodbye to many fan favorites. We get the final Schiller’s Reel of the original era, the last appearance of Jane’s “Joan Face,” and the final installment of “What if?”

We do learn the last name of Nick the Lounge Singer, so perhaps it is not a total loss.

Bill Murray returns to acting after a four-year hiatus to star in this modern retelling of Charles Dickens’ immortal classic, "A Christmas Carol," that’s infused with the chaotic energy of the live television and Saturday Night Live. Though originally panned by critics – as well as Murray and others involved in making the film – it has endured as one of the modern Christmas classics.

The script, written by SNL’s Michael O’Donoghue and Mitch Glazer, famously got reworked during the filming but the final product has stood the test of time.  Murray delivers a layered performance, the supporting cast is stellar, and the blend of dark humor and heart hits just right.

Candice Bergen returns to Saturday Night Live for the 3rd time to host the Christmas episode for the second year in a row. This one is loaded with killer sketches from “Adopt Belushi for Christmas” to “Santi-Wrap” to the iconic “Consumer Probe.” It's got a great monologue and two sketches, “Gary Gilmore” and “The Killer Trees,” which are sleeper gems you may have forgotten about. And, speaking of forgetting, we also get one of the most memorable “breaks” in show history as Candice forgets who is playing who in a sketch and calls Gilda by Candice’s own character’s name, causing both women to just lose it.

To top it all off, Frank Zappa performs three numbers – all of which are top notch. He even manages to sneak into a sketch.

It’s not a good sign when the only bit the man notorious for always kicking off his Saturday Night Live appearances with a song and dance is reduced to simply eating a carrot stick for his monologue. He’s forced to wait until he dresses up as a bear for an uncopyrighted Canadian retelling of “The Wizard of Oz” sketch to do both.  But, the episode does kick off with a fun cold open that turns into a runner – something we have not seen for quite awhile – and Harry Shearer continues to shine when he’s given the spotlight. And, the show continues to showcase new and interesting musical acts with Gary Numan as this week’s musical guest.

Not to be outdone, musical guest Marianne Faithfull arrives at Saturday Night Live equally impaired – if not more. She struggles through two performers off her comeback album, Broken English, and at times seems to be someplace else.  These two combine for one of the greatest – and most infamous – trainwrecks in show history.

And what would a trainwreck be without The SNL in Review’s legendary Andy Hoglund on hand to help sort through it all? Andy joins us to defend the musical guest, give his sympathies to Harry Shearer, and debate the pros and cons of drug use.

Patrick Weathers, a Featured Player that season, joins us to pull back the curtain on the very brief Jean Doumanian year of SNL. Ever the raconteur, he shares his journey from opening act for The Meters (former SNL musical guests), to cold calling producers and forcing them to let him audition, to his whirlwind tenure on the show.

Patrick tells tales of auditioning alongside Paul Reubens (at which a famous director friend may or may not have been in attendance for) and watching a young Eddie Murphy’s stand up before he was cast, to what it was like trying to replace the original Not Ready for Prime Time Players and work for a producer that not many had faith in. He talks about his favorite hosts, memorable sketches, and writers he learned from. He also gives a first-hand account of Doumanian’s final week at SNL – which started with Bill Murray returning to the SNL and ended with her (and him) being fired.

While The Mary Tyler Moore Show star brings the comedic chops and appears to have a lot of fun, this episode is known more for the myth and legend surrounding it than the material itself. Andy Kaufman wrestles a woman (again) in his final Saturday Night Live appearance of the original era and the Nerds sketch is known more for its battle with the censors than for its actual content ("You can't give noogies to the Virgin Mary!").

These are just a few words to describe the one and only David Bowie. And all could be used to describe any one of his musical performances on his very first appearance on SNL.

Bowie helps ring out the 70s as the musical guest alongside host, Martin Sheen. His three songs are not only the highlight of this episode but all of season five. So much so, it is easy to forget that Saturday Night Live did actual comedy this episode.

And while the comedy is up and down – ranging from the fun to the bizarre to the just long and boring – there are still some nuggets in there worthy of "best bits."

This is a MUST-SEE episode from the original era of SNL.

For the first time this season, things seem to be okay. In the capable hands of one of the best hosts to ever do it, the cast and writers feel freed from any specters hanging over them and start to find their new identity. With a mix of old favorites (recurring characters, live commercial parodies, a faux disrespect for Buck) and new elements (very long sketches, actors you've never seen before leading sketches, Buck with a beard), Saturday Night Live finally gives the audience a taste of what they've been looking for all season.

The cast tries their best, but the host - who looks genuinely excited to be there - just doesn't have the range or chops to help lift this one up. We do get a couple of familiar elements (recurring characters, Garrett in drag), some pretty solid impressions (courtesy of Jane), and that new guy doing a commercial pitch. We also learn that there is only ONE ball used in basketball and are witness to the start of a new trend—a VERY long sketch after the monologue. Sadly, no Buck cameo this week. It's no surprise even Mr. Bill wanted to stay home.

Can a lineup like this help Saturday Night Live get back on track?  Well…Idle was very sick (true story), Dylan sings songs from his new Christian album (also true), and Kaufman wrestles a woman on live television. None of these things helped.

Despite a 100+ fever, our host soldiers through with admirable determination, giving everything he's got to salvage the show. But still, the absence of two cast members remains sorely missed (and another still looks annoyed to still be there).  And yet, there are a few bright spots as the show gets meta, one of the all-time great hosts cameos again (two weeks in a row!), and there is some wonderfully silly absurdness you can only get when a member of Monty Python hosts the show.

Despite being Martin's 7th time hosting, this episode struggles to find its footing. The show is finding it difficult to establish a new identity without the presence of two of its biggest stars and those cast members still there have started to spread themselves thin with outside projects. New writers are searching to find their place and as well as compete for newly available screentime with themselves and someone who may or may not be a new cast member.

The S5 premiere may raise more questions than it answers but one thing is clear - the show is back and taking big swings. It is a pivotal moment in the show’s evolution and only time will tell how well they pay off.

The show, which ran for over 50 performances in the fall of 1979, was primarily made up of recurring characters and sketches from Gilda's SNL repertoire. Father Guido Sarducci was also on hand to help transition between sketches and give Gilda time to change from character to character. The live show was produced and directed by Lorne Michaels, while the film adaptation would be directed by Mike Nichols.

While we focus mostly on the film, we go back to cover the complete story of the "Gilda Live" project—from its inception and the failed attempt at originally recording a live album, to the successful (and extended) Broadway run, and up to the less-than-successful film adaptation that followed.

History has branded Lasser as one of the worst hosts in Saturday Night Live's 50-year run—a reputation largely cemented by Lorne Michaels' decision to keep this episode out of reruns for decades. With only secondhand accounts and show lore to go on, the episode's notoriety grew in the shadows. But is the reputation deserved?

Granted, this episode has its problems. While there are many issues to unpack, the blame extends far beyond just the host. What we can say definitively is this: it's not even the worst episode of THE SEASON.

Released just a month after SNL's fourth season wrapped, this summer camp romp marked Bill Murray's first starring role and set the stage for what would become one of cinema's most beloved comedy careers.

Saturday Night Live brings its highest-rated season yet to a close and while things are mostly upbeat, there is still a sense that this is somewhat of a goodbye. In what will end up being the final episode for Dan Aykroyd (unknowingly) and John Belushi (pretty evident) as cast members we see the final appearance of The Samurai, The Olympia Café closes its doors, and Richard Nixon makes one last appearance in the original era. On a brighter note, we get one of the most well-known cold opens of the era courtesy of Mr. Bill and an appearance by master impressionist Michael O’Donoghue!

Season 4's penultimate episode stands as one of the more peculiar outings from SNL's original era. The accomplished host finds herself surprisingly underutilized, appearing in only a couple of sketches that truly showcase her talents. The show meanders through a mix of recurring characters and familiar formats—some expected, others quite surprising. And while the musical guests – Linda Ronstadt & Phoebe Snow – look good on paper, their performances just don’t seem to click.

The entire episode feels oddly restrained, as if everyone involved was operating at half-speed. Was this the inevitable result of Season 4's notoriously grueling production schedule finally catching up with the cast and crew? Or were they simply coasting, saving their energy for the following week's season finale host?

We try to answer these questions and more, though first one of us had to figure out exactly who Maureen Stapleton was—and perhaps more importantly, who she wasn't.

From the opening monologue (cringeworthy in any era), Berle's constant adlibbing, camera-mugging, and pre-planned "spontaneous" moments derail the show, creating palpable tension that resonates through every painful bit. Behind the scenes, Berle's legendary ego only amplified the problems. Luckily, there are a few sketches that do NOT include the host, and they work quite well (for the most part). And, although only given one number, Ornette Coleman delivers as musical guest.

As with all “train wrecks” from this era, we bring in The SNL in Review’s Andy Hoglund to pontificate on all that went wrong with this outing, what few bright spots there might be, and to help get to the bottom of who is to blame for this fiasco.

A very memorable episode (though perhaps not for the best reasons), this outing of Saturday Night Live takes a distinctly "meta" approach with Jackson frequently playing herself throughout the night. Though when she does get the chance to play actual characters, she pulls it off quite nicely. The episode leans heavily on familiar territory, featuring recognizable faces and sets at every turn - in fact, nearly every segment (including one from the musical guest) incorporates a previous sketch, character, or performance from the show.

Speaking of recurring characters, this episode marks the farewell appearance of The Coneheads. But don't despair—we're also treated to the return of the unpredictable Andy Kaufman, bringing his unique brand of comedy back to 8H.

Our topic is Mr. Mike's Mondo Video - the film promoted as "the television show too dangerous for television." (Which we are genuinely excited about.)  It is a  film that confounded critics and audiences alike when it premiered in the fall of 1979. Has much changed since then?

Dennis Perrin returns to discuss the origins of this curious project, helping chronicle how it went from Saturday Night Live off-week special to “full length” feature film. We examine what worked (there are some things), what didn't (there are many more), and what the project reveals about both Michael O'Donoghue and the state of comedy in the late 70s.

And, just to show how MONDO this project truly is... there are some things even Dennis can't figure out.

There are a lot of questionable things in this episode and the final product is not only one of the weaker episodes of Saturday Night Live’s original era but also one of the most jaw-dropping…even for 1979. Of course, as the era winds down, we start to say goodbye to some recurring bits. This episode has the last appearance of Emily Litella and final installment of “Ex-Police.”

So…maybe its not all bad?
