 Marg Latham, P.Eng., was the only woman to graduate in civil engineering from Queen’s University in 1974. Since then, she has continued to be a pioneer and trailblazer. After graduation, Marg began managing multi-family residential construction projects, the only woman on these sites. In 1984, she joined UMA Group as a construction superintendent. In 1997, Marg moved to UMA’s head office, first as director of quality systems, then as vice president of knowledge management—UMA’s first female vice president—and later as vice president at AECOM. In these roles, she led ISO 9001 quality management implementation, industry-leading CADD standards and automation, and a Canada-wide health and safety program. 

 In 2010, she founded Aqua Libra Consulting focusing on professional practice, quality management and project delivery. In 2011, she was instrumental in helping to develop Engineers and Geoscientists BC’s Organizational Quality Management Program. Since then, Marg has assisted over 200 organizations in becoming OQM Certified. She is now helping several major organizations assess practice gaps and develop Professional Practice Management Plans to improve professional practice and public safety. 

 Marg has also been a champion for women in engineering across Canada. She has volunteered with Engineers and Geoscientists BC for many years and served on the Women in Engineering Task Force. She was president of Canadian Construction Women from 2004 to 2006. In 2012, she became a director, and then chair in 2019, of the Canadian Centre for Women in Science, Engineering, Trades and Technology (WinSETT. Marg Latham is a role model, mentor, and leader whose commitment to project management, professional practice, and diversity and inclusion has made a lasting impact on the professions in BC.

Caroline's journey began in Cameroon, where her childhood curiosity with electronics sparked her path into engineering, despite cultural norms discouraging women from such fields. After immigrating to Canada and facing significant barriers due to gender, immigrant status, and racial background, Caroline persisted with resilience.

Currently a senior customer support engineer Caroline supports medical laboratories specializing in genetic screening instruments for reproductive health. Her role involves installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting, ensuring these critical instruments operate effectively. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Caroline's essential role in healthcare was highlighted, underscoring her impact on public health behind the scenes.

Caroline is actively involved in mentorship, advocating for women and immigrants in STEM through organizations like ASET. She emphasizes mentorship as crucial for rising together and encourages others to pursue their dreams despite systemic challenges. CCWESTT  focuses on advancing gender equity in science, engineering, trades, and technology (SETT) fields across Canada. Their mission is rooted in addressing systemic barriers and fostering inclusive environments through collaboration, advocacy, and strategic initiatives.

Charting a Course, Navigating Systemic Change:

CCWESTT conducted a comprehensive gap analysis to identify barriers to gender equity in SETT fields in Canada. Themes of this year’s conference stem from those strategic priorities and findings. These themes include 1) Systems Change for Gender Equity, 2) Building Strategic Partnerships, 3) Inclusive Leadership and Accountability, and 4) Best Practices and Innovation. 

By addressing these themes, CCWESTT aims to inspire action, foster collaboration, and drive meaningful change towards achieving gender equity in SETT fields across Canada.

Gap Analysis Key Findings:

 1. Systems Change Approach:  involving all stakeholders—governments, employers, organizations, and institutions—to achieve gender equity in SETT. This approach emphasizes scaling out, up, and deep to address systemic issues comprehensively.

 2. Scaling Out: shifting the focus from "fixing women" to transforming unwelcoming SETT cultures. Solutions include educating and engaging male allies, decolonizing SETT fields, and promoting intersectional approaches to knowledge production.

 3. Scaling Up: Addressing the lack of legal obligations and accountability through strategic planning and legislative frameworks. CCWESTT recommends working with governments at all levels to establish legal frameworks and track Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for equity, diversity, and inclusion.

 4. Scaling Deep: Moving beyond performative actions to meaningful change by learning from lived experiences, supporting effective programs like mentorship and Equity Resource Groups (ERGs), and recognizing that equity work should not rely on unpaid labor.

Rachael's academic path took an unexpected twist when a geology course at Ohio State University changed the course of her life. The charismatic geology professor who shared her fieldwork experiences in remote and exotic locations shattered stereotypes and ignited Rachael's passion for geosciences.

Her journey led her to an MSc and research thesis on Arctic Ocean sediment cores, to working aboard the Joides Resolution as a marine technician, and to becoming an eighth-grade physical science teacher in upstate New York.

Rachael is currently a PhD candidate in Applied Geology and Geochemistry at Kent State University. We discuss her research on the geochemistry of the Arctic Ocean, exploring topics like nutrient availability, primary productivity, and the role of ice sheets in nutrient delivery. High school challenges prompted Stephanie's father to suggest aviation as a career. She enrolled in SAIT's avionics technology program, which became a transformative turning point in her life. Stephanie excelled, discovering her passion for avionics and electronics.

Her career began as an installation technician, eventually leading her to Antarctica, where she was part of the British Antarctic Survey. She describes the breathtaking beauty and unique environment of Antarctica, and highlights the responsibilities and challenges of her role, which included being the only avionics specialist on the entire continent. 

Stephanie's story comes full circle as she returns to SAIT, not as a student, but as an instructor. In this role, she imparts her knowledge and experiences to the next generation of aviation technicians.

Chieh is a living legend within the field of scientific ocean drilling, having worked aboard the Joides Resolution for 25+ years. As a laboratory officer for the IODP, Chieh shares her remarkable journey from Taipei to Texas, and unravels the mysteries of oceanographic drilling, and living at sea.

We discuss the role of technical staff aboard research vessels, and their responsibilities ranging from instrument engineering to carpentry to database management. Living aboard a ship for 60+ days consecutively, we speak on life aboard and how to navigate diverse personalities to overcoming conflicts. We shed light on the physical demands and logistical challenges of being a marine technician, and highlight the importance of stress management.

Patricia's story is one of breaking barriers. She candidly discusses her initial unfamiliarity with power tools and carpentry, and how she conquered them with a can-do mindset and the support of mentors and community. With each new skill mastered, her confidence grew, and she became obsessed with learning more.

Patricia talks all things carpentry, discussing her day to day and her current job installing scaffolding and working at heights. While scaffolding may not be her long-term focus, Patricia recognizes the value of gaining knowledge in this field. She encourages others to embrace new opportunities and not shy away from the unknown. Patricia's carpentry apprenticeship journey has been an incredible experience so far, balancing on-the-job training and schooling. She expresses gratitude to her Local for their support and looks forward to becoming a journey-person in the near future.

Patricia finds pride and joy in every aspect of carpentry, from framing to scaffolding and formwork. The excitement of creating something from nothing and seeing it come to life fuels her passion. She highlights the pride and satisfaction of playing a part in building structures, whether it's driving a screw or hauling wood up stairs. Her current dream project is framing houses, but she remains open to new experiences as she continues her journey.

Patricia's commitment to making a positive impact extends beyond her work. She is actively involved with Habitat for Humanity, contributing to new builds and renovations, giving families a fresh, clean space to call home. She also finds empowerment and solidarity through Women on Site, a safe space where women in trades come together, share experiences, and support each other.
