A former investigative journalist and White House correspondent, Thomas created an algorithm that collects information about murders by gathering data about related killings and checks if a city’s unsolved murder rate is high, which can indicate the presence of a serial killer. 

As a result of this algorithm, two cities opened new homicide investigations, leading to the arrest of a serial killer in one city and a special case review in another.

Through his organization Murder Accountability Project, Thomas is tackling one unsolved homicide at a time. But his work goes beyond just finding killers -- Thomas is also trying to understand why homicides are spiking in America.
