I am taking a minute to talk about the health and safety of our dogs. I've had several long term customers lose their dogs over the last couple of years, and they were all very unfortunate events that really couldn't have been prevented. BUT uncontrollables always get me thinking about controllables as, well, that's all we can control!

Some of the things I recommend when thinking about the health and safety of a dog are first and foremost—training. A dog that listens is hands down the SAFEST dog. I'm going to talk about the two aspects that are critical: controlling arousal and providing accountability BEFORE there's a high risk situation. I discuss feeding protocols that eliminate unnecessary interactions, utilizing crates and leashes where appropriate, having a process in place to tune in your dog when you are going on off leash adventures, and giving more consideration to what we medicate our dogs with.

Everybody knows dogs are gross. Everybody knows they like dirty socks, dead animals, and even eating poop. But this is the first time I've heard of a dog eating so much poop that they are pooping about 4 or 5 times more than normal..

If you have a dog that eats poop, this one is for you! But honestly, if you have a dog with any objectionable behaviors like jumping, barking, counter surfing, etc, this is all super valuable information. We are inhibiting a bad behavior. 

This is done by marking the behavior and attaching a contingent negative consequence to it that is so intolerable that you create a long lasting inhibition. The brain decides this isn't a behavior that should not be executed anymore. 

You've probably heard all the silly remedies involving pumpkin and pineapple or cayenne. But none of that works. This does.

It can be a little trickier than that with behaviors that tend to occur when you're not watching, so it's important to implement a very high level of structure and supervision during the training process until you know that your dog is trustworthy, or in this case, poop-proofed.

If there are behaviors your dog is allowed to do sometimes but not all the time, you might wonder if you are confusing them. And you might be. But if you've listened to me long enough, you know that the key to reducing confusion is to have a clear pattern. The problem comes in when us humans change the pattern (ironically, usually because we are worried about confusion). 

You can absolutely have your dog make discriminations. We do it all the time. In fact, your dog does it all the time unbeknownst to you. Does your dog grab a dirty sock when you leave the room but not do it when you are in the room? That, my friend, is a discrimination. 

Your dog isn't so much being "sneaky" as they are just exhibiting what they have learned. There is no accountability or negative consequence for munching on sweaty gym socks when you are not present. But there is when you are present. Your dog's brain has learned that pattern because it has been consistent. And unless you change that pattern (better get creative), the behavior won't change. 

But you can create a discrimination with an object, a person, a place, a sound, just about anything. And all you have to do is teach your dog that that thing is what predicts there will be negative consequences. It requires consistency on the part of the human to be effective, and it takes time. It may not happen in one lesson or one day. Give your dog's brain time to accumulate a series of experiences.

And I suggest starting with consequences that are on the low end for that particular dog because if you use high consequences right away, they will potentially be very hesitant to engage in the behavior again, even when it is okay. Keep the negative consequences low to middle of the road until your dog for sure knows the pattern. And then you can increase accountability and really clean up the behavior to only occur when it is okay.

We are talking about the icky dirty word PUNISHMENT today. You guys, I talk about this for a reason..it's what EVERYBODY needs. It's what EVERYBODY is missing. It's what EVERYBODY is worried about. Or..they're doing it, but very badly.

Ironically, avoiding aversives is THE THING that will result in a bad relationship and small life. It's a self fulfilling prophecy. 

You're human. So you think like a human. I'm here to help you achieve the best results with your dog training and your dog's behavior SO THAT you can have all those things you dream about. Ya know, a dog that comes back when called, a dog that doesn't jump all over people, or eat poop and then lick your face..

Aversive control and punishment are somewhat taboo topics in the dog world. Shhhhh...we're not supposed to be talking about it. But I know how necessary it is to get where you want to go. And I know how to do it—properly. I also know what people struggle with because I'm having those conversations with my real life clients every single day. 

Hey, I don't want you to have  a dog you can't enjoy. Or a dog that gets no enjoyment. Quite the opposite!! But I want you to have a dog that listens, too. After all, that truly is necessary for you both to enjoy each other's company. I want you to have BOTH/AND.  

Teaching your dog that they have to listen to you, truly is the key to all of those other things you want and dream about. So we are talking about conjuring up the courage to use aversive control in a way that will get you that both/and life. And... pissing off a lot of keyboard warriors at the same time....multitasking..

Separation anxiety is a common problem but exists on a pretty broad spectrum. When you have a dog at the extreme end of the spectrum you are unable to live your life. It is all consuming. Every little mundane thing becomes an issue. Everything from showering to going to work, to going to a dr.appointment or a friend's house..because if you can't take the dog, someone needs to come sit them.

When you are dealing with severe separation anxiety, it can be tough to know what to do. In a lot of cases unwanted opinions and advice are being thrown at you from every angle. Your vet is shaming you, your friends that foster make it sound trivial and you feel crazy or accused of being impatient or unreasonable. But it's not you.

I'm sharing the recipe we use for fixing separation anxiety: order, structure, non-negotiable obedience, BE QUIET IN THE KENNEL (enforced with ecollar). Aaaaaaaand the recipe is all the stuff you've been told not to do!!

As a side note, I absolutely think it's best to do this alongside an experienced professional. BUT some folks don't have that luxury. And if you make up your mind, and put in the time, and do the research you can find the resources to help you figure it out. I absolutely admire someone who is willing to get outside of their comfort zone and try. After all, it likely won't end well for the dog if someone doesn't do something. 

If you can improve your dog's behavior, you can improve their state of mind and their level of comfort. Which in turn improves your relationship and quality of life.

In this episode, I'm talking about a topic that comes up in almost 100% of our go home lessons. Once you teach your dog what the word no means, they tend to be very responsive to the word. No. This leaves people thinking that they can use the word no stop behaviors without needing to use any kind of tangible correction. 

And although we might all do that every once in awhile, there is a problem with doing that regularly.. And that problem is that no in and of itself is not a tangible correction and will not influence the dog's behavior long-term. And so, while it might get you what you want in the moment, the lack of an actual consequence will likely result in your dog committing the same crime over and over again. This results in you having to interrupt the same behavior every time potentially for the rest of your dog's life. No thanks! 

Another very common question is how to manage a dog's excitement when people are coming in or your dog is greeting people and the human inclination is to be very command centric in those cases and that's usually a big mistake. You're much better off to address behavior in state of mind. Not using any commands. Just let your dog make some choices and tell them if those choices are good or bad.

I get lots of great questions from our clients and listeners. Here are a few that I get asked a lot. 

Have you ever had a dog you couldn't train? Answer: not a normal dog. We have had a few that didn't have much hope, but it's extremely rare. Maybe 1 out of 500 has a very poor prognosis of being able to get to a point where they are "safe enough" to stay in their home. I describe what was different about these dogs and the difficult part—telling the owners that they have one of those dogs.

How old is too old to train? All dogs learn..even old ones. But it is a little different. We find the biggest factor isn't so much age, but age combined with what they have learned so far. Learning itself is a skill to be built. A 5 year old dog that has never even had to learn their name is not going to do as well as a 7 year old dog that has learned lots of commands and maybe done puppy training, and learned tricks, etc. 

Do tools cause aggression? Short answer: no. But yes. While aggression isn't created by ecollars or prong collars it can look like it is as these tools can really piss your dog off when they are in the throws of reactivity. I'm talking about some specific examples I've seen in this episode. Any tool can frustrate a dog and aggression that is exhibited in those cases is usually aggression revealed not created.

Are you worried about inadvertently creating negative associations if you correct your dog? You're not alone. We hear this a lot. Especially around fussing in the kennel, but there are hundreds of contexts this can be a concern, and luckily, they are all mostly handled the same way.

It's really important that your dog understands that consequences are in fact tied to their behavior, and not random or tied to only to a "thing" in the environment. This means you should know exactly how to show your dog which behavior leads to the correction, and what kind of behavior results in the absence of a correction. 

Your dog needs to see a clear pattern. If you are consistent, over time the pattern should only become more and more clear. So time is your best friend (in conjunction with consistency). 

Over the years I have dealt with many dogs that didn't like the kennel, and I've never had one decide the kennel was bad because we corrected them while they were inside of it—never. That's a pretty good record. And again, you can apply this logic to any context, not just the crate, but that is a very common concern.

The other good news is, even if you do somehow manage to accidentally create a negative association that you didn't want to, it's usually super fixable by simply digging in and showing your dog a new pattern. Seeing is believing, and new experiences create new associations, easily.

When we get dogs with behavioral challenges, especially if they are anxious or nervous dogs, a huge piece of the rehab is the human. We often get dogs that have struggled for years, and the environment is always a factor in the path that the dog is on. 

It is imperative that we change the environment and change the interactions. That means rewiring the humans so we can rewire the dog. It is very unnatural to respond neutrally when we feel big feelings, but it is so important if we are to actually start doing something different and getting better results. You can't help your dog if you are stuck feeling anxious and nervous yourself. 

But you'll always be human, so learning to feel the feelings and not allow them to run the show is HUGE! This is true whether you have a nervous dog or a pretty outgoing dog and you just have a moment of guilt here and there. 

At the end I'm going to summarize  things that can help you do the right things when you feel like caving.

I love this episode, guys. I'm talking about all the amazing things you can do for you and your dog through training. This might be as simple as teaching sit or it might be using sit as a way to help your dog overcome fear or it might be as in depth as using e-collar skills to help your dog avert their gaze from a trigger that makes them uncomfortable.

This is the whole reason that we keep some dogs longer. Some dogs need more state of mind work, and this is much different than basic obedience. You guys, I'm such a behavior nerd! And I'm so excited to tell you about the three main categories (at least in my mind) in dog training, and how they are different, but also how they overlap, and how you can use them to really truly help your dog feel differently! 

Whether your dog is just a little excitable or highly reactive or has fear or aggression issues. These things are how we cultivate change across the board. We also touch on use of the "f" word (force) to help your dog.

We are talking about the physical feedback necessary to actually maintain the control end of the leash. We see folks relinquish control to the dog all the time for a variety of reasons.

Sometimes we tend to treat certain moments like they are unimportant because they are brief in nature (like walking to the car) but the fact is ALL moments are important, and all moments are learning moments. 

But at the core, I think it's really unnatural for people to communicate physically because as humans we primarily communicate verbally. Your dog will absolutely take control if you aren't in control and you can only accomplish that if you physically communicate and enforce standards. If you have an intensely excitable dog you may need to work harder and communicate more. If you have a softer or calmer dog, it may be less. But all dogs need that feedback coming in.

Okay. This is the most common question, at least after "when can we take the e-collar off?"  Neither question has a straight answer, either. But I think the most succinct response is you can take it off when you can take it off (might be never) and the right level is the one that works (in most cases).

Most people don't realize that we can use our e-collars (aka big, scary shock collars) in a variety of ways. We have 100 levels, and I cannot feel it until it's on a level 12. I can tap it quickly, or I can apply constant stimulation. This means I can be very gentle with an e-collar, but I can also make it very uncomfortable. 

But then you also have to consider that what is uncomfortable to one dog might not be to another. Every dog is unique, and genetics play a major role in what dogs perceive and how they respond. As if that isn't enough to consider, you need to break it down even more because even the same dog will have varying degrees of sensitivity depending on the state of mind at the time (usually  impacted by environmental factors).

Using the most appropriate level is a skill to be built by the human. If you try to set it and forget it you fail. The number on your e-collar usually gets far more attention than it deserves, and you might be getting in your own way by putting too much emphasis on it.

I'm going to break down the various functions of an e-collar and how we select a level at any given time. We also cover what it means (or doesn't mean) when your dog does the dreaded vocalization and makes you cry yourself to sleep after.

Here is a list of 5 rather random things that I hear people say they are doing VERY frequently. And they are things I wouldn't recommend. These things are usually not helpful and often even make things much worse. 

5- Tethering your puppy or dog to you all day

This is supposed to strengthen your bond and "reduce freedom" but really it helps create a needy dog with potential separation issues. It also allows you to actually mentally check out.

4-Letting dogs sort things out themselves

You won't like the way dogs sort things out. There is no doggy jail and they don't have the ability to think about the gravity of their actions. Dogs that "love" each other may very well enjoy the company of another dog one minute and be willing to fight to the death the next. Advocate for the dogs before you have a problem. 

3-Using redirection to stop mouthing or reactivity

Redirection is essentially a reward and you're creating a vicious cycle. Don't avoid having the real conversation with a correction or at the very least setting firm boundaries. This doesn't happen with redirection. 

2-Using pee pads during housebreaking

This is a real common strategy for folks during the house breaking period, especially with small dogs or folks that live on the third or fourth floor. But you might be setting yourself up for more work later as you are normalizing peeing in your house!

1-Putting your hand in the dog's food

This is annoying to most dogs. And whether it is or not, it really doesn't do anything to prevent resource guarding. Instead you can employ other strategies like feeding in the kennel and leaving the dog the hell alone. Also get your relationship in order. Have rules. Have expectations. That is what really prevents resource guarding. It might not hurt to create some positive associations, but I don't do that by annoying the dog while they are eating.

Puppies! We've been talking about them a lot lately. One thing I hear over and over again is people justifying behavior as "puppy" behavior. And although there might be some truth to that in a way, the dangerous part of that is attached to that statement, logically, would be that once the puppy isn't a puppy anymore the behavior goes away naturally. And THAT couldn't be farther from the truth in most cases.

Puppies exhibit everything that comes naturally (as will adult dogs except they usually have some learning under their belt already). But unless you actually DO something to change the behavior there really is no reason for it to change. Most behaviors will continue to intensify as pups move through adolescence into maturity. 

Unfortunately this means a lot of the time that your relationship will suffer. Especially if you adopt a very drivey working type dog or a dog that is just wired to be more intense more forward more escalated and more easily stimulated. These things are genetic and don't shut off when your puppy grows up. Starting now to learn how to set rules and boundaries and get rehearsal at inhibiting behaviors is sooooo important.

Unfortunately most people find correcting puppy behavior to be really uncomfortable and many people just choose not to do it. Especially if they see the puppy temporarily "shaken" (and they should be—they will recover—that is half the benefit is building resilience and building an understanding that corrections are part of life and I still want to be your friend and connect afterward).

We will be restructuring our programs and offering less stand alone puppy training. I talk about this some, but this episode mainly is to point out what we do attack when it comes to puppy behavior and why we do and what the risks are if you don't.

Food! Most dogs love it. But some dogs couldn't care less about it. Some dogs are too reactive or too nervous to take it. So what do we do to motivate our dogs with food if they aren't the most food motivated? 

There are ways to make food more desirable. One of which is to use it when the dog is hungry. This might mean training before a meal or it might mean skipping a meal or reducing meal size for a few days. It might mean using higher value food and just cutting it up very small to avoid filling the dog up.

But you NEVER NEED food. Just to be clear. We get dogs all the time that won't take food when training, and it doesn't have to be an issue. But food can really be your friend when it comes to increasing behaviors, so we highly recommend using a food item that motivates your dog during obedience lessons. In fairly short order, you should be able to move to an intermittent feeding schedule instead of every rep. 

This might be every 3 or 4 reps and then every 5-7 reps and then eventually basically none. As feeding is decreasing, accountability is increasing (negative consequences ranging from annoying to very uncomfortable) is gradually increasing. Ultimately in the end, there is no payment for executing a simple command, but there is accountability for not executing. 

Behavioral stuff can be trickier. I  would argue that the majority of aggressive and reactive behavior is largely the product of a dog's genetics combined with positive reinforcement. In many behavioral situations I believe dogs and owners are best served to refrain from using food unless they are very well versed in what to do and when and what to watch for. This can be a challenge, even for seasoned dog trainers. You risk increasing things you don't want to. 

In behavioral situations I generally recommend sticking to clear instruction, exuding confidence, giving guidance, and using a calm assertive energy. Maybe some neutral praise is fine, but reducing overall arousal (food creates arousal) is usually more productive.

I hear it all—the—time! You should never punish a growl because that's how dogs communicate they are uncomfortable. This argument is complete nonsense, and in this episode I break down why and what we have seen with the hundreds of dogs we have addressed growling with.

By putting more emphasis on why something is happening than on how to change what is happening, people stay stuck. The whole 'root cause' argument is generally not helpful and sends people down a rabbit hole that goes nowhere. 

Dogs do lots of things that communicate discomfort. That doesn't mean we should allow it. Allowing your dog to do such things will generally just continue to strengthen the intensity and frequency of the behavior, often resulting in eventual escalation. 

That being said, there are lots of things to consider when it comes to addressing growling, and I'm going to break them down in this episode. Things like the general personality type of your dog and the nature of your relationship, etc. Most of the time dogs are growling at dogs or noises or strangers, but if your dog is growling at you, you need to build something new, my friend. Just attacking the growl is probably not the best plan of action.

But that being said, we never give the advice "ignore it" or "respect it". Those are the words of fools who don't know how to fix it.

Everybody wants results, naturally. Does this training really get results? I'm talking with Joyce today about her journey through training her own dogs. If you adopt a dog from a shelter you don't know for sure what you are going to get. In this case the person ended up with an intense and drivey dog with clear hunting instincts. These were getting in the way of them ever having positive interactions and affecting their ability to bond and live life.

The human is covered in bruises and is at a loss as to what to do. She can't kennel the dog because it is too vocal. She doesn't dare to sleep because if she moves it could trigger the behavior. 

The dog can't enjoy walks as it becomes nervous the moment they set out and cowers and puts on the brakes. Both the intense biting and the cowering are the result of question marks. And we have the ability to dramatically reduce the question marks, making dogs more respectful, more confident, more predictable, and more enjoyable. But this transition is real work. It won't happen naturally in most cases, rather things will likely get worse.

These stories are all unique, but there are threads that are very common. Dogs being transported up north from the south has resulted in a lot of these types of cases. Luckily there is hope! Things can absolutely be better in most cases. It just takes a commitment and a leap of faith. Sometimes we have to feel the feelings but then set them aside so we can do what we truly think is the right thing for us and for the dog. So what exactly is best? Have a listen!

A lot of folks get stuck in training "lessons" with their dog and they never graduate to just having a trained dog that can do the stuff in real life. 

There are a few reasons for that. The biggest thing is you can't ask your dog to do things in real life and expect that to be easy until A-they've practiced and know it and B-there is real accountability for not doing what is expected.

If either of those components aren't there it will be too messy to hold together in real life. So how do we recommend that you get the best results with your dog? How do you ensure that you will eventually be able to use all this training you're doing?

Well, we recommend structure. And in this episode I'm going to spell out exactly what that looks like and why it works and produces such a polished result. Also why it is soooo mush easier for you!

Structure helps you control the dog and the environment (at least to an extent) while the training is happening. That makes you much more efficient and effective. It reduces the stimuli and feedback coming in to precisely what should be coming in. Your dog isn't learning things you don't want them learning. You have a high level of control over what they are learning.

If you are too casual and allow too much freedom you will be helpless to control what happens when and inevitably you will be unprepared to deal with it rendering your training useless, really. It can be done. But it is harder and messier and usually takes longer.

Either way the takeaway is the same. You mush teach your dog what you want and don't want. You must start expecting it.

Dogs don't live that long. How many years do you want to struggle or have to manage your dog just to avoid a correction that is typically a split second? That's what people do, though. And there's a reason. It's all the bologna that is out there on the internet.

That's why people are better at building behaviors (which is much more difficult) than stopping behaviors (which is SIMPLE). Why is it everyone I meet needs help with stopping behaviors when that is the EASY part of training? 

People worry. But maybe we should not just worry about all the stuff we read online and how we are "stressing" our dogs or hurting our relationship. Maybe we should worry about our actual reality. How much time are you going to let slip away? And if your dog is dangerous, eventually what is going to happen when management fails?  

Recognize the complexity of what you are asking your dog for. Are you asking them to execute something complex or are you asking them NOT  to execute something? One is much easier than the other, and there's no reason to struggle and suffer with such things for years when everything you want is so attainable. 

Stop worrying about what so happen if you correct your dog and start worrying about what so happen if you don't.

These are things we do with client dogs right off the bat. Sometimes we forget that it's not just about teaching your dog words or commands. It's about behavior. It's about teaching your dog how to slow down, how to process, how to prioritize you, how to resist impulses, even if those impulses are out of fear, nervousness, anxiety, or extreme over stimulation.

All dogs learn automatic kennel manners (going in and out-kennel drills)

All dogs learn the non-verbal sit (and rehearse it in busy environments)-MY FAV!

All dogs learn to go in and out of the car upon invite and hold a down.

The first 2 of these 3 are super super easy, and EVERYONE should do these today! They are so simple and the return on investment is so worth it.  It sometimes eludes us that these simple moments make up our whole day and dictate our dog's state of mind. Taking a few minutes to do a handful of reps can be so impactful rather than just addressing it the one or two times you need to that day.

Instead of only working on car stuff when you are actually leaving, do it when you have nowhere to be! Take 10 or 15 minutes and go do 20 or 30 reps of something simple that involves little to no commands and just literally shows your dog a different way to exist and go through the world.

Once they see and do a different thing, they might just start doing it on their own, especially with the proper feedback and guidance from you.

So common! Dogs are all individuals! But also, as a culture we seem to think that "normal" dogs like playing with other dogs. Nope. They often don't. And If yours falls into that camp and they are forced to play with other dogs, how do you think that will turn out? 

If that is the case you have to recognize that your dog might not actually be the problem. No level of training will ever fix the OTHER dogs and it will probably never change your dog's personality where he loves being harassed by other dogs.

Nobody will advocate for your dog but you. So you need to know when and how to do that, but also tell your dog if he or she is being a jerk. And it may very well be both!

Don't make socializing your dog something more stressful than it needs to be. Be proactive about evaluating the situation and whether or not it is a good situation to put your dog in. I personally would never put my dogs in a situation with any other dog that I know is going to pester or bully them UNLESS someone is going to step in and put the kibosh on it.  That might mean fewer get togethers where your dog is able to be included because  everyone being on board with controlling their dog's behavior is the only way it works!

"When can we take off the e-collar?" This is our favorite question. NOT! It is actually a very good question. And the answer is simple for most dog owners, especially since they aren't dog trainers—you can take it off when you don't want your dog to listen.

Can you teach your dog to listen and behave all the time regardless of whether or not the ecollar is on? Sure. But most people aren't going to have the skill or follow the instructions carefully enough to achieve that. You absolutely can, though, in most cases. Some dogs are easier than others too, which is also an important factor. Some dogs are very soft and much less likely to push established boundaries. Some will test you daily. 

But we are talking about what must be true to move AWAY from your ecollar.

I see it all the time. People are trying. The dog owners I meet are often trying very hard and are very committed. But! They are making a huge mistake. The mistake is that they believe they are holding their dog accountable for their behavior, but they are missing the things that truly need to be addressed because they are more subtle.

By the time they are trying to hold their dog accountable, the dog is all ready off the rails and burning in a ditch. This might be as simple as jumping on someone or running through a door, or it might be as serious as severe reactivity and aggression. 

The fact is our dogs usually give us signs that their state of mind is going downhill long before any tangible behavior actually occurs. There is too much emphasis on behaviors and not enough emphasis on reading your dog so that you can give him feedback sooner and it will be more meaningful and more impactful and avoid a lot of your unwanted behaviors before they can never even happen. 

Don't correct your dog for going through the door, or do, but in the future correct your dog for simply crowding the door or being too excited about the door, being too amped up at the door. Don't correct your dog for reacting to the dog, but correct your dog for staring, for his ears going up, for him telling you he's too excited about that dog. 

See the difference? Where there's smoke there is fire. Even if you can't see it. Don't wait until you have a full-fledged forest fire and your house is burning down.

It is hard to argue that the process used should not be the one that gets the best results, yet here we are. In dog training today there is an immensely flawed philosophy that is fiercely promulgated by dog trainers and even "professional organizations" that are looked up to by the average pet owner, and many professionals in the field, today.

The result is that people are brain washed before they have even sat down to think about it. They already believe that aversives in dog training is bad. They already believe that it will cause harm. They already believe that corrections in dog training are not necessary or are only necessary for "bad" dogs. 

The loudest critics of effective training in the dog training industry are the most deluded, often totally discounting genetics as well as the outcome of the training.

Those things matter. And any good trainer should be able to explain in a way you understand why this philosophy doesn't work and why we need to include accountability with negative consequences in the training. Whether we are talking about behavior modification or off leash obedience. 

The goal should always be to build the safest, most reliable dog, who is as confident as they can be, and create the most harmonious relationship with its owner possible. If the goal instead is "never use aversives", results will vary (because the goal is not results oriented, it's process oriented). And people need to take responsibility for those results.

Punishing a dog's behavior is already a controversial topic. Not that it should be. Punishment is literally, by definition, the only way to eliminate behaviors. But what is even more controversial, and shrouded in mystery because nobody wants to talk about it, is punishing a puppy's bad behaviors.

The truth is we have a different set of rules we go by when it comes to puppies (which we are defining as dogs under 6 months of age). 

So I'm going to dive into what we correct and how we correct it. And also how we avoid allowing puppy to do things we don't like when we aren't correcting it. The key to all of this is:

* Structure (lots of crate time and no free roaming)

* Lots of 1 on 1 engagement and puppy has a leash on

* Establishing priorities as far as which behaviors need to be addressed now

Typically, this is biting/mouthing, jumping, and fussing in the kennel.

* Using a safe and effective means of correction for those things we want to knock out right away.

We typically use a bonker, a leash pop, or a poke in the side, or for biting I will squeeze puppy's lips around their own teeth until it is uncomfortable for them. So... Kind of like biting them back.

These are all things that people will be horrified by, but my experience has been that this is how you effectively shape behavior which results in the best relationship. It also results in a confident, resilient, and respectful adult dog. Most of the things people say will happen (like damaging your relationship and traumatizing the dog) are imagined. They aren't real. In my experience this never happens. 

But people do create this story in their head. My experience is based on hundreds or thousands of dogs. And the results have been consistent across the board. There is no reason people should struggle with bad behavior or allow their relationship to go off the rails with their puppy because they are afraid to correct them. As long as you incorporate the structure piece so your puppy isn't always getting into trouble.  99% of what you do with your puppy will in fact be lots of food work.

So many of the things that we do with other humans are counter productive with our dogs. While many of the basic principles are shared, we tend to use language in a way that our dogs don't really understand and we also humanize them, applying what we THINK or what we FEEL as though it's the same for our dogs. But it's not!

I am giving very specific examples of things that can really help propel your dog training into the next level and get traction where you never could before. Don't stay stuck doing the same things over and over if it's not working. 

* Stop soothing fear and trying to comfort the dog. Instead exude confidence.

* Stop talking so much! You are muddying the waters. Your dog can't extract the meaningful stuff because the noise never shuts off.

* Take your dog into stressful situations! Don't avoid them! This is where progress can be made.

* Try convincing  yourself that more positive interactions is NOT the thing that will help your dog. After all, it hasn't yet.

*Eliminate free passes. Giving your dog the "benefit of the doubt" sounds nice, but really it serves to keep them confused and you frustrated.

* Work your dog above threshold and around triggers. The threshold never moves if you don't. Triggers just remain triggers.

* Put ALL of your focus on results, not process. The results should actually determine your process as you go!

Sometimes we get dogs that are "good" most of the time but can exhibit some untoward behavior in certain contexts. For instance, the message that prompted this topic was from someone whose dog will growl/snap if someone pets them while they are on their place bed.

There are several things we should be doing to both make our dog as safe as possible and get them making better choices. I include several things we can do to ensure our dog is inclined to be the best version of themselves and to understand that respect should be given to all humans, not just you.

But we also need to be responsible and advocate for ourselves and for our dogs. Don't put your dog in needlessly risky situations. Have clear boundaries laid out for people and have a plan already cemented in your head for social gatherings so that you aren't trying to figure it out on the fly. Having a plan already solidified takes out the decision making and will make those situations so much easier. And if people choose to question your rules or not respect them,  then I guess they are choosing not to be around you when you have your dog.. sorry, not sorry.

We never want people relying solely on management, but keeping everyone safe around your dog and keeping your dog safe is entirely up to you. Nobody will do it for you. In fact, they will fight you on it. So you need to be clear minded about what to do. Dogs are dogs, not stuffies. 

AND we also want you to make your dog as safe as possible. This is the best recipe to reduce long term risk for everyone. Don't miss out on valuable conversations with your dog. Don't live daily life with them in a way that invites them to just do whatever comes naturally, because if you do, they will.

Prong collars get an undeserved bad rap—mainly because they look scary. Sometimes they are even referred to as spike collars and there are misleading and false photos out there showing grotesque wounds on dogs' necks, but they aren't designed to work by poking, pricking, or God forbid, injuring your dog.

They are designed to amplify the sensation of pressure, evenly all the way around the neck instead of concentrating it on the trachea and reduce interference with breathing or tracheal irritation. Prong collars don't choke dogs as they are raised off the surface area of the neck by the prongs, themselves. They are typically pretty blunt and don't feel sharp and don't put holes in your dog like the internet would like you to believe. 

We always describe it as putting a little microphone on your leash to improve your leash communication. But you do need to know how to use it. The collar won't do the work for you in most cases.  But what we have seen over and over and over again, is how underrated this tool is and how many people have no idea what they are missing out on. You can drastically change your walk and your relationship with the purchase of a collar and a few tweaks to how you handle your leash. It can be life altering!

A lot of people will talk like the clicker is magic. It's not. And this is coming from someone that loves the clicker. All the clicker does is link your dog's behavior to a reward.  And that's the thing that is magic. It's not that it's a clicker, per se, it's what you do with it. You can use a clicker very ineffectively, too.

Understanding what a marker is, how to use it, and what exactly your sequence should be will improve your results with your dog immensely. You can potentially cut your reps by 75%. Now admittedly, I'm just pulling that number out of a hat, but that is almost certainly accurate in some cases because folks don't understand how their dog ties things together.

This isn't only true for rewarding good behavior or correct obedience behaviors, it is also true for corrections when punishing unwanted or bad behavior. If your execution of markers is poor, you will potentially have to torture yourself with correcting your dog many more times..

The best strategy when it comes to training your dog is always to get the message across as clearly and quickly as possible, but what a lot of folks don't realize is that relies on how well you implement the correct use of markers.  Can you teach your dog without that? Yep. But it will take much longer. And in some case it may never even really come together.. no good. 

A marker is something that predicts something else. The example I use to explain this is the doorbell. Your dog likely knows that when the doorbell rings, you will go open the door and someone will be there. But if you opened the door and someone was there and then the doorbell rang, that association proabably wouldn't occur. The guest at the door would predict the doorbell instead of the other way around. 

Also, sometimes it takes you a minute to get to the door. Does that make your dog forget that somebody is there? NOPE! Why? Because once an established marker occurs, a delay in the outcome won't automatically disconnect the events. That would be silly. 

If you can understand this concept you can improve your communication, training, and results by an order of magnitude!

We spend 2-3 weeks with most dogs. We spend 2-3 hours with you. It isn't fair to think you will be confident after just a few hours with us. You need to go out into the real world and do stuff. Seeing is believing! 

But we have found that there are 5 specific things that really get in the way of results carrying over to the owners  themselves. Those things are:

* The owners not getting the proper training. So we meet a lot of folks that did e-collar training elsewhere and received ZERO instructions on what they should do at home. Or they received very inaccurate instructions. 

* Going into off leash situations without their long line before they are ready to. You're still new to this! You need to practice and build confidence. 

* Not following the instructions back home, especially the structure piece and accountability. A lot of folks don't think it's important to limit their dog's freedom or challenge them, especially in the house, because their dog is "really good". But that autonomy and lack of experience with respecting you and your boundaries will follow you outside!!

* Being afraid to turn up the heat and hold the dog accountable. Without enforcing the rules, they simply aren't rules. And most of the things we are worried about are just in our heads. Which brings us to the last one..

* The story people tell themselves. Oh boy...do people know how to write a story! I find a lot of folks could be writing scripts for heart wrenching lifetime movies. People worry.  And honestly, your brain and body wouldn't be working right if you didn't. That is normal! But you have to know when your brain is trying to protect you from a threat that isn't real. Like your German Shepherd barking at the trash can in the yard because you moved it earlier and it's now 3 feet to the left of where it was. Haha.

Don't tell yourself that your dog is scared, confused, nervous, panicked, afraid, or even stubborn for that matter. Let the story go. Even if your dog is confused or panicked, or stubborn, it's you being calm, assertive, and consistent that will get them through it.

This is such an important behavior to teach. Not only can it be a safety issue if you can't teach your dog to stay, but it also helps your dog learn to be calmer, more relaxed, accepting, and more focused. 

It surprises people that the dogs we train all learn to stay yet we never even say the word 'stay'. This is called the implied stay, and it's beneficial in many ways. Believe it or not, it's actually much easier for your dog to learn as they have to make fewer discriminations. 

Remember, your dog doesn't know words. You have to teach them what they mean. So if we are talking about the basic commands, your dog now has to learn 'sit' and 'sit, stay', 'down' and 'down, stay', 'place' and 'place, stay'. That is much more difficult than just learning the three commands and that they always hold their position.

We also tend to create the pattern that they should immediately spring back up after a command for a reward. This is inadvertently cemented over time, only making it harder for them to sometimes 'stay' when you ask them to.

This is such a grave topic. I never like getting calls like this, but I'm so, so glad when I get the chance to have a conversation with anybody who is in a situation like this because I know how stressful and sad and alarming and scary it is. And I know how hard it is to know what to do or what to expect.

Dogs and babies don't mix! And it is so common to have issues blending the two into the family. But when something like this happens and your dog actively growls at or snaps at your baby it could literally be a matter of life and death. You are absolutely a parent before a dog owner, and I think most parents would agree. 

But just tossing the dog out seems heartless and people are left wondering if there is any way to fix the situation. In most cases, yes! There is hope to live a normal life with your baby and your dog, even if your dog is not having it right now. But it will require some training and some change and a real commitment. 

I'm going to break down exactly what that means and what I suggested to these folks and what they could realistically expect life to look like.

One of the most irritating comments I see from other dog trainers are around "suppression". That's because when you punish or correct your dog's behavior, that is suppression by definition. Suppression is putting a stop to something. 

So in reality if you stop any behavior from being displayed that is suppression. Does suppression mean that the behavior will regenerate or resurface? No. Does it mean that it won't? No. 

Behavior is moving all the time!  But knowing how to stop it is crucial to having a well behaved and safe dog. Being responsible about the situations you put your dog in is also crucial. Some folks seem to think that all dogs should be like stuffed animals with  zero ability to bite or react in any and all situations and that is a wildly unrealistic expectation that would result in nobody being able to keep their dog.

We always take the approach with all layers. We train the dog to be respectful, we train the dog to be very reliable and obedient, we build a relationship of standards and accountability, we address and punish bad behaviors directly, AND we take responsibility for the situations we put our dogs in!

The narrative on the internet, and pretty much everywhere, is that you should never make your dog uncomfortable. If you glance at FB you'll find endless arguments and accusations. The common theme is that aversives are never necessary. Pain, fear, discomfort are all bad and trainers that incorporate any of that into their training are also bad.  

Those trainers are also made to sound as though that's all they use. This has put those trainers in a position where many of them are publicly caving to the idea that punishment is bad and softening their language or "sugar coating" things in order to defend themselves from the on-slot of attacks. 

So what is the truth? Is fear and pain bad? Is it always bad? Is punishment bad? Punishment, by definition, is anything that reduces a behavior. So by definition even offering food or petting could be a punishment if the dog tried to avoid it by modifying their behavior. What is best for the dogs? What actually saves dogs' lives and keeps them in their homes?

If you've ever wondered what the truth is, it's your lucky day, because that's exactly what I do. So here is a summary of my most recent FB argument after a fairly popular UK trainer caved to the mob.

Do you have an excitable dog that hangs up the phone? Or a nervous dog? All the information out there seems to say that during the training process you should keep your dog under threshold. Threshold refers to the point at which your dog starts to boil over and make the decisions that you are working hard to change. 

Keeping dogs under threshold may sound great, but unfortunately the real world will often throw a monkey wrench in that plan. Also, is it actually a great idea to keep your dog under their threshold?

Here is the thing.. you can't learn to make a different decision in a certain situation if you're never in that situation. And you can't learn to make a different decision without varying consequences.  So what does that mean? And how should you do it? 

In this episode I talk about that process of overcoming your dog's thresholds and how the process is really determined by the dog. I talk about how we do it here and give specific examples.

I'm a firm believer that heeling your dog can heal your dog. Whatever ails them, heel can help. No, it won't "fix" all the behavioral issues, but we definitely use it as leverage to help with reactivity, anxiety, nervousness, and anything else you can think of. 

It can be quite meditative and help dogs really relax in a way that they never can when they are helpless to control arousal and impulses. 

It also is an amazing way to deepen your bond with your dog and improve your relationship. Make walks a thing you actually do together, now, instead of just being pulled down the road behind your dog who is on their own walk. You become more relevant and worth engaging with, respecting, trusting, and following.

There's one in every family! That's not always true..but a fair percentage of people struggle with properly disciplining their dog, and this often results in dogs being unruly, needy, anxious, not listening, or demanding, even to the point of aggression. Being too soft can create a spoiled pooch! 

We are going to talk about 5 things you can start doing to try to break out of that softy mindset and cultivate a little more respect. Do one thing at a time, and I bet you start to notice some differences. 

It's no fun to have a dog that doesn't respect you. Even if they are mostly well behaved. It will benefit you both if you to develop your ability to be a little more assertive, which doesn't require being mean, but it does require you differentiating yourself from a door mat or pez dispenser by having standards and setting boundaries.

Dogs jump. Why? Why, why, why? It's sooo frustrating, right? It might be the most common complaint we hear. Ironically it is also one of the easiest behaviors to stop. I know people are struggling with this. I know owners are trying "everything" and spending months or even years managing their dog (or worse yet paying trainers who don't know how to stop it or won't be honest about how to stop it) when we could stop this behavior in a few minutes.

This is probably the number one issue we see with the dogs that come to us for training. Almost everybody is dealing with this to some degree or another. Some dogs get mildly excited by other dogs while some are extremely over stimulated and some look like Cujo at the end of the leash, and we strongly suspect they may kill another dog if they were able to get to it. 

The thing is, all of these scenarios can result in less than enjoyable walks and impede your ability to take your dog places. It might be mildly problematic or it might  ruin your life.  So nobody likes this behavior, and pretty much everybody wants to avoid it.

So, how do you do that? When do you do that? Does doggy daycare help? Do positive interactions help? What if you aren't able to "socialize" your dog? You can relax! You don't actually need ANY of these things. Have a listen!

So many dog owners struggle with dogs that don't do well at the vet's office or at the groomer's. These are some of the most challenging environments, and it isn't usually an easy fix. But these tips can get you on the way to building something new with your dog and helping them (and you)  be calmer and more confident. 

We talk about arousal (excitement) playing a role in all the stuff your dog does in these places. Whether it is just jumping up and not listening or it's reactivity or it's fearfulness. Controlling arousal is a game changer. 

 We are also talking about dogs that won't get into the car or that don't do well in the car. We share our protocols for restraint and safety in the car while your dog is learning how to be still, as well as how to keep arousal down and even help car sickness!

Everybody has an opinion on what you should and shouldn't do with your dog, and how you build a "good" relationship with them. But the problem is they don't take into account each dog's specific personality. Also.. most of it is just plain made up garbage with the claimed benefits having no basis in reality. This is because they are missing the thing that actually matters the most, which is YOU get to decide what the rules and boundaries are with your dog.  

Most sources will tell you to never correct your dog or address their bad behavior in a way that will actually work, but yet they will tell you to enforce all kinds of nonsensical arbitrary rules that will make life a drag in order to become "dominant".

Dogs guard resources. This is a normal behavior. People often think of their dog as either aggressive or not aggressive as if  they can only be one or the other, but any dog can exhibit aggressive behaviors, even if they never have before.  

There is a  lot of advice out there on how to prevent resource guarding, and most of it is just blather, so we are going to parse through that and determine how much value there is doing these things with your dog or puppy and I'll share my thoughts on the role of genetics and what I think you can do to help reduce the likelihood that your dog will develop food aggression (or any other untoward behavior).

Purely positive  training cannot eliminate reactivity in most cases. Rescues usually can't either because they usually only offer purely positive services. And your dog isn't eligible for them because they are too reactive...so there's that. Often times reactivity and aggression are even covered up so that the dog can be adopted out easier.  Lies, lies, and more lies. Their solution? Just draw the curtains.

Even after training some folks continue to struggle with their dog's behavioral issues. And sometimes that is because some dogs are more challenging. We are, after all, dealing with the nervous system. All dogs are wired uniquely.  But the vast majority of the time we can see right away why some of these deep set patterns and relationships have not changed. 

It pays to remember that all of your dog's behaviors are tied together in some way. They are never truly "separate".

Doggy daycare and dog parks carry a high level of risk and a very low level of benefit. What has become obvious to me over the years is that a lot of dogs don't actually enjoy themselves in these environments but that it just isn't always obvious. Until it is. And that is often post training because your dog is now used to being in environments where dogs are under control and someone is advocating for them. Some dogs can be super big babies. Big dogs and small dogs alike can fall into this category. We love helping people! But...some folks just can't be helped. This is the number one biggest challenge any dog trainer will face. Our clients are amazing! But every now and then we get reminded that there are people out there that think they will pay the fee and their problems will go away. 

In this episode I am talking about the reality of going through a training program and not getting the results. It is not my favorite thing to talk about. AS someone who is so passionate about what I do, I want everybody to succeed. And it's a very common question from people that are considering signing up. People are concerned that their goals aren't actually achievable for their dog.

But I have found that most people's goals are very realistic, and the results are very much predicated in their willingness and ability to put in the work, put in the time, and make the lifestyle changes that we recommend. Sadly, not everybody does.

Do you have to "trade" your dog things to get things from them? This is really common, and although it sometimes works, it might not always. Even if it does work, we discuss the reasons it's generally a bad idea to play the trade game or bribe your dog to give you something it has in its possession.

So what the best way is to  take an item away from a dog without the conflict of having to reach in and physically take the item away (which we never do).  Bones, food, toys, household items..doesn't matter. You need to be able to remove things from your dog's possession safely.

In this episode I talk about how you can 100% take anything away from your dog at any time, but without conflict or risk of a bite. You will also get your dog into a more respectful headspace with these tips. And really instill that humans control the resources which is the safest way for your dog to see the world.

All too often we get calls for dog behavioral issues AFTER something goes completely off the rails like someone gets bit, but often there were signs right along that things were headed in the wrong direction.  Aggression, guarding, separation anxiety, etc.

That being said, can things change or develop suddenly? Did your dog have a traumatizing event that led to a change in behavior? If your dog is pretty well behaved are we sure we are seeing what we think we are seeing, so we aren't caught off guard later by our dog "turning" or "snapping" suddenly?

Regression is normal. Almost everyone is going to deal with this in some way at some point. Maybe you go away and leave your dog with someone else and it's as if they've forgotten everything. Or maybe there has been a gradual divergence from the once rock solid training you did. OR maybe your reactive dog started acting up again on walks. 

The good news is, this is normal. Behavior isn't sedentary. It wiggles. It moves around, it evolves. it regenerates. But the other good news is dogs don't generally forget the training. They just renegotiate the rules. Don't forget that your behavior is a huge factor in your dog's choices. If you don't do anything different, nothing changes. Punishment. It is the most demonized aspect of dog training. Here's the thing. You can't really train your dog without it. Because without it you only have things your dog will work for (and you may not even have that if your dog doesn't really want anything) and you have nothing your dog is working to avoid. 

We train using lots of praise and rewards. In the beginning. But over time, as the dog becomes more fluent we add punishment to make behavior reliable. We are also very proficient is using punishment to stop unwanted behaviors (like jumping) quickly. It's not anybody's favorite piece of the training, but it is the number one thing people need help with because..

Without a downside to our behavior, there is no reason to ever do anything we don't want to or avoid doing something that we want to do. It would be utter chaos and we would destroy our own lives if we lived that way, yet most people allow their dogs to live that way and only barely get by with managing their dog's behavior. 

But success lies in real change. And real change and real reliability are truly reliant on your ability to be able to implement punishment in a fair and consistent way. There is so much nonsense out there about how damaging punishment and corrections, are but it's all just imaginary harm. Done correctly, it is the thing that will finally get you the relationship you want with your dog. Stop unwanted behaviors, no yelling or anger. Get your dog to listen to you and come back when called, even around distractions. 

But you have to do it correctly. So how do you do that? We are talking about the most common mistakes we see people making every day. Have a listen!

I love this episode! Dog training is an emotionally charged topic today. Especially when you bring up tools like e-collars. But we have found this tool to be the most practical and effective way for our clients to win. They develop amazing relationships with their dogs. They're able to give their dog's more freedom and include them in family activities. 

They even boost their dog's confidence  with the e-collar, help them settle, and reduce fear and anxiety. Not what you will hear if you read the typical narrative on  the internet. Most sources talk as though all we do with e-collars is light the dog up over and over again, but that couldn't be farther from the truth.

Yes, we can punish behaviors using the e-collar, and we do. But we can also do many other things with it that most people don't know about. It becomes a very strong communication tool with our dogs. It becomes a lifeline. It helps dog's build skills and build confidence where they may have never been able to were it not for skilled e-collar use.

Positive reinforcement is the most powerful (and therefore the most dangerous) tool in dog training. It can absolutely strengthen behaviors very quickly, unfortunately that applies to behavior we don't like as well. And that stuff is often positively reinforced by accident. 

The problem that is so pervasive today is simply that positive reinforcement in the absence of punishment will create a very one sided effect—more arousal, more excitement, more drive, and very little impulse control. Very little inhibition. Very few coping skills. Very little respect for the handler.

Yet there are a lot of folks out there that don't want you to stumble upon the truth or to consider that you need to incorporate real rules and boundaries and negative consequences into your training. So the easiest thing for them to do is just lie to you.

If you have to leave your dog with someone else, it's not the end of the world. In this episode we talk about finding a balance between acceptance that your dog may regress a little and holding your sitter to a standard that will keep your training from going completely under water.

Sometimes we may need to lower our standards a little, but that doesn't mean you should just let everything go down the tubes either. When you come back, you need to remember that your dog hasn't forgotten the old rules. They just don't think they are being enforced anymore. Within a couple of days you'll have everything as it was before you left with these tips.

We see our dog through rose colored glasses. Most people don't see their dog for what they really are. That's not to say all dogs are "bad". But we see the friendliest and nicest version of them, generally speaking. It's easy to forget they are dogs just doing what comes naturally. 

We also have preconceived notions based on breed and even size and general appearance. But the fact is those things have little to no effect on behavior. Your dog is capable of doing things you haven't seen them do before. That doesn't mean they never will do them. So what do you do when your sweet loving dog surprises you with some untoward behavior? Like growling, biting, aggression, guarding, etc?  Are you to blame?

Nervousness and fearfulness in dogs can be one of the most challenging things to deal with and overcome. It certainly doesn't help that most of the internet advice out there is the polar opposite of what you should actually be doing. 

It can be very counter intuitive to implement the discipline necessary to help your dog achieve more confidence. Exposure alone will not help your dog gain confidence, especially if they are busy trying to avoid or flee.

It is too easy to just keep doing the same thing you've been doing. And nothing changes when you do that! Here's the thing I have found to be true. People are motivated to change, but they don't know what they are supposed to be changing. If you don't have a clear plan and faith that it will work, it's nearly impossible to stay motivated or to be consistent and experience progress.

We aren't huge fans of dog parks and daycares here, however some folks use them, and it works for them. Some of the reasons I hear for this are that there is no other way they can let their dog run, or they only go when there is nobody else there. Or some folks work super long shifts, like actual 24 hour work-days, and don't have anyone to help out with their dog. But there are also those who just say "my dog loves it".

What is the tradeoff to using these places and our dog spending time in these environments? Some people talk about these places like the dogs are just fighting constantly. Of course that isn't always the case! But  even when things seem to be going swimmingly, are they really?

The narrative out there is that you need to figure out why your dog is doing what they are doing and how they are feeling.

Your dog is the master at discovering patterns. That means it isn't as simple as a behavior is rewarded or a behavior is punished. It is actually a lot more complex than that. Your dog takes a picture of everything when a consequence occurs. Over time, the brain can compare these pictures to pull out the precise things that trigger that consequence. 

This is the precise reason that one reward or one correction isn't usually enough. Your dog needs more information. It is also the reason that people think they have trained the behavior they want but they actually haven't..yet.

Summer is finally here, and hopefully you're doing all sorts of funs stuff! And hopefully you are able to include your dog or you're working on it so that they can live a fuller life  with you and the fam. 

I love it when people train their dogs to a level that they can bring them anywhere and include them in anything.  But (you knew that was coming), we see a lot of people get in their own way and create not just set backs, but actually start to create patterns that are the exact opposite of what they want because they are eager to include their dog and they just don't do it in a way that is productive and conducive to their long term goals. These behavior patterns can then haunt you forever!!

It's worth putting in the extra work early on to have the dog you want and be able to include them the way you want for the rest of their life. Have a listen.

People tend to get overwhelmed and way off track with all the different catch phrases out there pertaining to training and "types" of training. Most people don't really understand what all of the terms out there really mean. And they also don't fully understand the process of effectively and efficiently building, shaping, or modifying behaviors which makes analyzing all these fancy "methods" really difficult. Hours on the internet are fruitless. Especially when you consider that most of what is out there is blatantly false. 

Terms like "purely positive" are used to make you feel good. It gives us the warm fuzzies and makes us feel like we are really doing right by our dog. And if it is really as effective as everybody says it is, why wouldn't we do our programs that way? And what are the main differences in our approach and our results vs a trainer that  adheres to the ideology of "positive only"?

So many folks prioritize their dog's "happiness" over their training. This is a problem in and of itself, but especially when we don't actually know what a "happy" dog is. 

A cool, calm, collected dog doesn't look "happy" by everyone's standards. It seems everybody is an expert, and they don't hesitate to tell  you what you're doing wrong or even that you are a bad dog owner. Especially if you use a prong collar or an e-collar. So, what do you do? Remember, boundaries require the other person to do nothing.  If you don't get comfortable setting boundaries with people, how will you ever succeed with your dog? It will be impossible to be consistent and your dog will take advantage.

Sooo many people train their dogs but not to their fullest potential. Even my own clients, a fair percentage of them, never raise the bar enough for their dog to be truly reliable.

Don't forget the point in training. It's one thing if your dog can do it, but it's another if they will do it—each and every time.

This episode is dedicated entirely to talking about punishment (corrections for those that are too ninny to use the p word). We are very effective at stopping unwanted behaviors, so...how do we do it? I explain in detail what the process looks like. And I'll talk about why it doesn't work for so many folks (they are doing it wrong). 

This is stuff nobody will tell you! Haha. But I will!!

Tired of being gaslit into thinking there is something wrong with your dog or that you just need to keep being patient? I don't blame you. That's because you will never achieve the desired result of eliminating a behavior if you don't understand these concepts. 

As a sidenote, this is NOT  how we train dogs to do obedience commands. Punishment is for STOPPING behaviors, not building behaviors. If you are trying to get your dog TO DO something, that is more of a process and involves a lot more guidance. This is how you get your dog NOT to do something. For instance, the window barking, the hole digging, the jumping up, etc.

This is a topic that is very near and dear to my heart as it took me a while to really understand that my own struggles with my own dog were not anything to do with me.

This is a great topic because I think we should all be using some management to some degree. After all, your dog is never going to be perfect. But when is management necessary? When is it acceptable?
