Grand Island CSD and Tonawanda City Schools: From Well-Baby Visits to a Love of Reading: The Growing Readers Story

In this episode of Inspiring Viking Values, we highlight one of the Grand Island Central School District’s and Tonawanda City School District's most meaningful early literacy initiatives: Growing Readers. Launched in 2018, this community-based effort helps place free books into the hands of families during well-baby visits, encouraging parents and caregivers to begin reading aloud to their children from the very start.

This conversation explores how early literacy, strong family connections, and community collaboration can work together to build a lasting love of reading in young children. Our guests discuss the origins of the initiative, the importance of reaching families before children enter school, and the powerful role that schools, pediatricians, libraries, Rotary, and community partners play in supporting language development and literacy.

Featured guests include Cheryl Cardone, Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel Services for the Grand Island Central School District; Stephanie Anderson, principal; Maureen Roussi, early childhood educator; Faye Teluk, President of the Grand Island Rotary Club; Sarah Infante, Assistant Superintendent for the Tonawanda City School District; and Bridgette Heintz, Librarian Director II at the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library branch on Grand Island.

Together, they reflect on why investing in babies, toddlers, and families is one of the smartest and most hopeful things a community can do.

Today on our podcast, we are doing a deep dive on the Senior Day of Caring, which is part of our district’s October Viking Cares Initiative—a month where every student in the Grand Island Central School District participates in some type of service learning.

Today we explore how Grand Island High School seniors made a difference across the community by volunteering at the Golden Age Center, Sidway Primary School, the Grand Island Fire Department, the Bell Center, and the Sheridan Park Life Center. Our seniors also made special gifts for pets and interacted with therapy dogs. Today we are also sitting down with, principal Hillary Kretz-Harvey, assistant principal, Jaime Peld, math teacher Caitlin O’Rourke, and 3 of our high school students….Ismail Masoodi, Sarah Logar, and Jaymee Gray.

Kaegebein Elementary - Project-Based Service Learning in Action

This podcast features principal, David Howe and two Kaegebein teachers Stephanie Kwiatkowski and Allie Pellittieri. We explored how Kaegebein students are learning to make a difference — not just in their classrooms, but in their community.

From creating colorful placemats for residents at Elderwood Assisted Living to cleaning up debris around the school grounds, students are learning firsthand that small acts of service have a big impact.

Stephanie and Allie also share how their classrooms use project-based learning to make learning authentic and meaningful — including their Community Helpers Project, where students design interview questions, record conversations with real community members, and learn how teamwork, empathy, and curiosity can shape civic-minded citizens.

Grand Island High School Musical - Something Rotten

Something Rotten! is a musical comedy with a book by John O'Farrell and Karey Kirkpatrick and music and lyrics by Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick.

Set in 1595, the story follows the Bottom brothers, Nick and Nigel, who struggle to find success in the theatrical world as they compete with the wild popularity of their contemporary William Shakespeare.

Performances of this musical will take place on Thursday, February 6, and Friday, February 7 at 7:00 pm. and Saturday, February 8 at 6:00 pm. All performances will take place in our very own Grand Viking Theater.

In this episode of Inspiring Viking Values we interviewed Mr. Max Pikula, the principal of Huth Road Elementary School. Family Support Services and Continued Help During the Holidays

Sidway - Mrs. Roussi and Sid Snippets

In this episode of Inspiring Viking Values we interviewed Mr. Michael Antonelli, the principal of Charlotte Sidway Elementary School in Grand Island NY. Mr. Antonelli shared information about their Sid Snippets videos that promote responsible, respectful, safe and compassionate behaviors at Sidway. Mike had some special guests join the podcast. The first guest was Ms. Maureen Roussi. Maureen is a Universal Pre-K Teacher and one of the stars of Sid Snippets. Additionally, we had four other special guest students join the podcast. Lyla Stapleton, Jeremiah Colin, Nick Provenzo, and Margot Moll. The students shared information about their favorite Sid Snippets and which new snippet videos should be created before the end of the school year.

Huth Road Elementary - Select Art Show and Track Meet - May 16

In this episode of Inspiring Viking Values we interviewed Mr. Max Pikula, the principal of Huth Road Elementary School. Mr. Pikula shared information regarding the upcoming District Art Show and Elementary Track Meet. Joining the podcast were seven special guests. Mrs. Dana Allen, an elementary Art Teacher joined us along with Mrs. Kelly Cunningham and Mr. Bobby Ross who are Physical Education teachers. Grand Island Schools - Using Floreo Virtual Reality to Improve Life Skills

In this episode we interviewed Mr. Brett Finnan, a Behavioral Specialist in our school District. Brett discussed his use of Floreo technology which is a learning app that uses virtual reality as a method for teaching science-based social and communication skills. Katelyn Simpson joined the podcast as well. Katelyn is a special education teacher with us and she shared her experiences with Floreo. Our last special guest is Logan Scott. Logan is an 8th grade student at Veronica Connor Middle School. Logan shared information about his experiences using the technology.

VCMS - Emerging Leaders Conference - "Flash to the Future"

In our 11th episode of Inspiring Viking Values we interviewed Mr. John Fitzpatrick, the principal of Veronica Connor Middle School. Mr. Fitzpatrick shared information on their "Emerging Leaders Conference" event coming up on June 9th. Mrs. Mary Gentz and Mrs. Leanne Winstanley joined the podcast as well. They are middle school Career Technical Educators in our Business Department and they co-facilitate leading the Emerging Leaders Conference. Sarah Logar joined us as well. High School - Seal of Civic Readiness

In our tenth episode of Inspiring Viking Values we interviewed Mrs. Hillary Kretz-Harvey, the acting principal of Grand Island High School. Mrs. Kretz-Harvey shared information regarding their efforts to secure the NYS Seal of Civic Readiness.
In this episode, we had some special guests join in on the conversation. Mrs. Julie Bowen and Mrs Caitlin Wojciechowski are Social Studies teachers who are conducting a pilot study with interested seniors regarding the Seal of Civic Readiness. Additionally, Sydney Knight and Kaitlyn Burns joined us in this episode. Sydney and Kaitlyn are 12th graders who are part of the pilot. They shared their experiences and perspective as it relates to their contributions toward achieving the Seal of Civic Readiness.

Huth Road Elementary - Social Circles or "Squircles"

In our ninth episode of Inspiring Viking Values we interviewed Mr. Max Pikula, the principal of Huth Road Elementary School. Mr. Pikula shared information regarding the use of Social Circles. Kaegebein and their Wellness Wednesday Initiative

VCMS - Viking Olympics

Sidway - Achieving Success Through Academic Support

High School - Building a Respectful HS Community Through Circles

In our fifth episode of Inspiring Viking Values we interviewed Mrs. Hillary Kretz-Harvey, the acting principal of Grand Island High School. Mrs. Kretz-Harvey shared information regarding their "Professional Reflective Practice and Classroom Circle strategies" utilized at Grand Island High School. In this episode, we had some special guests join in on the conversation. Mrs. Amy Flynn (Math) and Miss. Arielle Davidson (English) are classroom teachers who are trying the Circle strategies within their classes and they also participate in reflective professional development circles with their fellow peers. Additionally, Fortune Macri joined us in this episode. Fortune is an 11th grade student in Mrs. Flynn's class. He shared information about the community circle activities he has participated in during the school year. Huth Road Elementary - Conflict Resolution Through the Creative Arts

In our third episode of Inspiring Viking Values we interviewed Mr. Max Pikula, the principal of Huth Road Elementary School. Mr. Pikula shared information regarding a musical two of his teachers used to help teach Conflict Resolution skills for their students and the rest of the school community. Joining the podcast were five special guests. Mrs. Kristin Pernick, a fifth grade teacher at Huth and Co-Director of the musical Munchkin Mediation: Conflict Resolution in Oz joined the podcast along with Mrs. Jeanne Percival. Mrs. Percival is a third grade teacher at Huth and she is a Co-Director as well. Furthermore, joining the podcast was Mrs. Carissa Sugar. Mrs. Sugar is the music teacher at Huth and she assisted with the musical numbers. Additionally, two Huth Road Elementary students joined us on the podcast. Annabelle Grabek is a third grade student in Mrs. Percival’s class and she played the role of a Munchkin in the musical and Ruth Dalbo, a fifth grade student in Mrs. Pernick's class also joined us. Sid the Kid and PBIS at Sidway Elementary School
