I recently had a fascinating conversation with Gideon, an experienced network engineer, where we delved into the future challenges that the computer science industry will likely face. Our discussion covered various topics, including the significance of Security and the necessity of staying abreast of the latest technology trends.

When I asked Gideon about the most significant challenge on the horizon for the computer science industry, he responded without hesitation, "Security. Security, um, Security." His conviction underscored the gravity of the issue at hand. Gideon informed me that, in 2022 alone, there were over 600,000 vacant security positions in the United States. Filling these positions presents a colossal challenge.

Gideon also offered valuable advice to young professionals, especially those interested in cybersecurity. He stressed the importance of gaining knowledge in cloud engineering and Security, emphasizing the importance of cybersecurity. Staying updated with the latest advancements and obtaining relevant certifications was another critical aspect he highlighted. Drawing from his personal experience, Gideon shared his rewarding journey of achieving a Microsoft Azure Network Security certification, despite the difficulties he encountered along the way.

"The future is centered around the cloud," according to continued. "We need dedicated individuals to protect it. Cybersecurity is critical." He emphasized the need for professionals to adopt a well-rounded approach and cultivate diverse skill sets. According to Gideon, being a person who can bridge gaps and handle various aspects of the field will be invaluable.

However, as our conversation progressed, we also touched upon an urgent issue within the industry—the lack of representation of women and people of color, particularly in leadership positions. Gideon candidly shared his observations and personal experiences, shedding light on the challenges underrepresented individuals face.

Gideon expressed concern about the reluctance of some successful minority professionals to uplift others who share their backgrounds. He noted that, despite their own struggles, many individuals fail to support those aspiring to follow in their footsteps. Gideon recounted an incident where he encountered a black person in a position of authority who did not provide the expected guidance. This encounter left him disheartened, realizing that not everyone is willing to uplift those who aspire to succeed.

Our conversation also addressed the systemic barriers hindering underrepresented individuals' progress in the computer science industry. Gideon recounted his encounter with biased background checks, which disproportionately affect people of color. Teachers and parents are critical in shaping young girls' educational and career paths. Unfortunately, many girls interested in math, chemistry, and physics are discouraged from pursuing those fields due to societal stereotypes and biases. That's why teachers and parents must encourage, and support girls interested in STEM fields.

When I asked Ms. Lucy about who paved the way for you? Was there someone, like a role model, that you saw, something that impacted you and caused you to pursue stem degrees and make you think, like, I want to do physics? I want to do mathematics?" "Was there someone who influenced you?"

She said, "Yes, sort of like 50-50, I guess." She continued, "When I was, how old was I? I think I was 11. I was in fifth grade in a school in the heart of Georgia. Ms. Willa teaches us at Glenwood. She was the most amazing teacher."

"The way she approached math and sciences with us, she went the extra mile to ensure we got what we were learning. We retained all our knowledge. We had fun while we were learning. I don't remember doing tests or failing at anything."

"I just remember passing, but I don't remember how I passed. I knew I was getting better and better, and I enjoyed math, and that changed my aspect of how I'd want the next generation to approach sciences and math. I'd like it to be more curious and interesting than testing your knowledge on a specific subject."

"But aside from that, my dad has the biggest one yet. Cause he supports me in all my ventures. He paid for my, um, university education. He does everything for me. He supports me even when it feels like I'm failing."

"I know he's got my back. So yes, he has to be my biggest. He taught me that sometimes when you discover your passion, it's important to chase your passion instead of the money. Mm-hmm. So, pursuing what you also love and what makes you feel whole is more important than anything."
"I guess those are the two major ones. Well, well, well, shout out to both your former teacher and your father."

Through the years numerous initiatives have arisen to address the lack of racial and gender diversity within STEM, nonetheless, the STEM participation gap amongst BIPOC females persists. There are numerous factors that contribute to the collegiate and professional gender diversity gap in STEM such as biases and a lack of advocacy. Breaking the biases involves breaking down ethnic and traditional norms around girls in STEM as it relates to a woman or girls “place” in society. The lack of advocacy must be addressed by both men and women within and outside of STEM because we all benefit from new discoveries and advances made in STEM. 

Breaking the biases that surround the ethnic and traditional norms around females in STEM is crucial to promote gender equality and provide equal employment opportunities for girls and women in STEM fields. As a father of a daughter interested in pursuing multiple STEM disciplines in college and as a BIPOC STEM professional the statistics regarding gender diversity in STEM are alarming and the topic warrants more discussion to increase awareness and solution driven plans for addressing the lack of DEI within STEM. I am honored and privileged to discuss these topics more in-depth with Mrs. Chinwe Nkiru. 

Mrs. Nkiru is a proud Nigerian from West Africa and is the founder and executive director of Flourishing Life International Foundation. Mrs. Nkiru also serves as the President of the Ladies in Sustainable Community Development International Program and is the coordinator of the SHE4STEM project. ]]> The representation of BIPOC female students in collegiate STEM programs and professional STEM careers is disproportionate to both BIPOC and non-BIPOC males in STEM. Through the years numerous initiatives have arisen to address the lack of racial and gender diversity within STEM, nonetheless, the STEM participation gap amongst BIPOC females persists. There are numerous factors that contribute to the collegiate and professional gender diversity gap in STEM such as biases and a lack of advocacy. Breaking the biases involves breaking down ethnic and traditional norms around girls in STEM as it relates to a woman or girls “place” in society. The lack of advocacy must be addressed by both men and women within and outside of STEM because we all benefit from new discoveries and advances made in STEM. 

Breaking the biases that surround the ethnic and traditional norms around females in STEM is crucial to promote gender equality and provide equal employment opportunities for girls and women in STEM fields. As a father of a daughter interested in pursuing multiple STEM disciplines in college and as a BIPOC STEM professional the statistics regarding gender diversity in STEM are alarming and the topic warrants more discussion to increase awareness and solution driven plans for addressing the lack of DEI within STEM. I am honored and privileged to discuss these topics more in-depth with Mrs. Chinwe Nkiru. 

Mrs. Nkiru is a proud Nigerian from West Africa and is the founder and executive director of Flourishing Life International Foundation. Mrs. Nkiru also serves as the President of the Ladies in Sustainable Community Development International Program and is the coordinator of the SHE4STEM project. Kritchana is a third-year undergraduate student at the University of Maryland majoring in Public Health Science on a Pre-Pharmacy Track. We call her name is Kritch. She is also a certified nursing assistant with experience in small clinical, hospital, and home care experience.
 
She is an administrative researcher at the US Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center.
While in secondary school, she volunteered and continues to volunteer in various STEM organizations, including hosting a STEM event at her local elementary and secondary schools to encourage young girls' interest in STEM fields.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has led our nation and the world on a continuing adventure of human exploration, discovery, and achievement for more than 50 years. In 2021, NASA launched a goal addressing equity through a comprehensive effort assessing the expansion and modification of agency programs, procurements, grants, and policies and examining what potential barriers and challenges exist for historically underrepresented and underserved communities.

To this end, NASA issued a Request for Information (RFI) in 2021 to receive input from the public on NASA's mission directorates' programs, procurements, grants, regulations, and policies. This information is being used to evaluate, implement, modify, expand, and streamline NASA's programs, procurements, grants, regulations, and policies to remove systemic inequitable barriers and challenges facing underserved communities.

Her comics and unique imagination have turned the Periodic Table into a playground of chemical adventure and have allowed elementary school students to master concepts often taught at the college level.

Dr. Colleen Kelley is the Creator and Founder of Kids' Chemical Solutions (www.kidschemicalsolutions.com), a comic-book-based chemistry curriculum for kids ages 8 – 108. Her journey as a chemist began at The University of Richmond, where she received her B.S. in Chemistry. She fell in love with the world of discovery and research and wanted to continue to explore more chemistry. She headed to Penn State University and dashed through graduate school, receiving her Ph.D. in chemistry at 24. She had so much fun doing chemistry research that she accepted a Chateaubriand Postdoctoral Fellowship in Strasbourg, France, with Nobel Prize winner Jean-Marie Lehn.

Colleen was a first-generation college student who kept following her flow of having fun doing chemistry research. Fast forward 30 years later to the tail-end of her career teaching chemistry in higher education, Colleen finds herself captivated by the question, "Why do my students think chemistry is SO hard?" Dr. Kelley now conducts her research in Chemical Education to uncover this mystery. What she has discovered is that learning chemistry is very much like learning music. Both disciplines depend on the interpretation of symbols and the development of fluency with these symbols. We know that the best time to learn music is between ages 6 – 10 when the brain has the plasticity to make the necessary neural connections. We NOW know, through Dr. Kelley's research, that this is also the best time to learn chemistry.

Dr. Kelley is now teaching in 4th and 5th-grade classrooms in Arizona using her chemistry comic book series. The kids are excited and embracing learning through this platform. What's next? "My WHY is to make learning chemistry fun, accessible, and inclusive so that it becomes a 'normal' part of a child's education."

I was honored to discuss the state of our BIPOC community's workforce preparedness/readiness in the STEAM fields with Dr. Bernard Jackson, Ph.D., a retired Navy Captain, and the President & CEO of Leading-Edge Solutions, LLC. 

Dr. Bernard Jackson is the President and Chief Executive Officer for Leading Edge Solutions, LLC, and a Service-Disabled Veteran owned small business. Leading Edge Solutions is a business management, leadership development, and Diversity & Inclusion consulting company specializing in creating innovative solutions to enhance competitive advantage in the global market. 

Dr. Jackson is a retired Navy Captain with over 25 years of operational leadership experience in various programs. Significant leadership assignments at sea include Commanding Officer Destroyer Squadron Fourteen, Commanding Officer USS McFaul (DDG-74), and Executive Officer USS TICONDEROGA (CG-47). 

From 2006 to 2010, Dr. Jackson served as the National President of the National Naval Officers Association (NNOA). During his tenure as President, NNOA supported Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard efforts to increase diversity at the service academies and Naval ROTC programs. 

In 2011, Dr. Jackson established the NNOA Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) program. He leveraged a national network of civilian and military champions to create a STEM program that identified over 95 minority students to participate in STEM-related intern programs. From 2011 to 2014, this program awarded over $400,000.00 in scholarships to minority students interested in STEM-related careers. 

Dr. Jackson currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Savannah State University Foundation. Dr. Jackson also serves on the Board of the Concerned Citizens Network of Alexandria (CCNA). CCNA coordinates with local government, state, and community stakeholders to empower a comprehensive community-wide effort, to increase student achievement and reduce the high school dropout rate. 

Dr. Jackson served as the President of the Alfred Street Baptist Church HCBU College Festival Ministry from 2017 to 2021. The Alfred Street HBCU College Festival is recognized as one of the largest college festivals in the nation. Over the past five years (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 & 2020), the ASBC HBCU College Festival provided an opportunity for over $25 million in scholarships to be offered to high school students across 40 states. 

In 2016 and 2020, Dr. Jackson was awarded the Omega Man of the Year Award for serving as the Purple Boot Mentoring Program (PBMP) Chair. The Purple Boot mentoring program supports young minority males by exposing them to leadership and male mentors in combination with robotics training. 

Dr. Jackson received his Bachelor of Science degree (Chemistry/Math) from Savannah State University. He was awarded a master's degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College. He received his Doctoral Degree (Ph.D.) in Organizational Management with a specialization in leadership from Capella University. He has completed the Navy Corporate Business Course at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill business school.

]]> I was honored to discuss the state of our BIPOC community's workforce preparedness/readiness in the STEAM fields with Dr. Bernard Jackson, Ph.D., a retired Navy Captain, and the President & CEO of Leading-Edge Solutions, LLC. 

Dr. Bernard Jackson is the President and Chief Executive Officer for Leading Edge Solutions, LLC, and a Service-Disabled Veteran owned small business. Leading Edge Solutions is a business management, leadership development, and Diversity & Inclusion consulting company specializing in creating innovative solutions to enhance competitive advantage in the global market. 

Dr. Jackson is a retired Navy Captain with over 25 years of operational leadership experience in various programs. Significant leadership assignments at sea include Commanding Officer Destroyer Squadron Fourteen, Commanding Officer USS McFaul (DDG-74), and Executive Officer USS TICONDEROGA (CG-47). 

From 2006 to 2010, Dr. Jackson served as the National President of the National Naval Officers Association (NNOA). During his tenure as President, NNOA supported Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard efforts to increase diversity at the service academies and Naval ROTC programs. 

In 2011, Dr. Jackson established the NNOA Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) program. He leveraged a national network of civilian and military champions to create a STEM program that identified over 95 minority students to participate in STEM-related intern programs. From 2011 to 2014, this program awarded over $400,000.00 in scholarships to minority students interested in STEM-related careers.

Mr. King has worked with other executives to develop a model to transfer environmental technologies between federal labs and Universities and from NASA to emerging businesses.

Dr. Green is a Co-Founder of Think and Grow Farms. Dr. Green and her co-founded launched T&G farms, LLC in 2019 to address food scarcity in West Philadelphia. 

Their company grows and preserves food while actively engaging underrepresented students in STEM for global sustainability. Our passion is training NextGen agriculturalists to use engineering, technology, sciences, and business training to become problem solvers and future entrepreneurs.
 
They are helping West Philadelphians go from consumers to producers for a more equitable local economy.
