“Holding Multiple Selves” : Dr Anna Sulan Masing on belonging beyond labels

Dr Anna Sulan Masing is a Writer, Poet and Academic.

In her book "Chinese and Any Other Asian: Exploring East and South East Asian Identity in Britain", she explores the vast history of othering and belonging for East and Southeast Asians in the UK, and what it means to be East and Southeast Asian in Britain today.

She says this:

"I sometimes say I am half white or half Iban Malaysian, but I feel much messier than a half. I feel like my identity spills out of everything and doesn't easily stay within boundaries. I've grown up in multiple cultural spaces, moved through and lived in many locations, and feel both at home and an outsider in all of these places. I want to take control of my identity and not be caught between two places and halves, to have agency and the ability to hold multiple locations and identities in one hand."

Her work sits right at the intersection of identity, place, and belonging. She asks:

"I am an Asian person from the South East part of the Asian continent. I am not South East Asian. It allows for the question: what part of South East or East Asia is your heritage from?"

In this episode of Let’s Crew & Riot, I speak with Nicholas Thompson - CEO of The Atlantic and author of The Running Ground.

We begin with a line from his book that I couldn't stop thinking about:
"A parent has one obligation… unending love. There's no blueprint and there's only one rule. The kids get to decide if the parent meets the standard."

From there, we explore the complexity of loving someone who is both formative and, at times, damaging - and what it means to hold contradiction with clarity.

Nicholas reflects on his father’s life - one that began with promise and trajectory, and later became far more complicated - and how that experience has shaped how he thinks about parenting, relationships, and leadership today.

I parked my mummy brain, I got curious, I took feedback, I got a peek into her honest beautiful mind and emerged richer and wiser.

Rajeev Balasubramanyam on Compassion, Dialogue & Non-avoidance

Rajeev Balasubramanyam is a British writer. His first novel, IN BEAUTIFUL DISGUISES won a Betty Trask Prize and was nominated for the Guardian First Fiction Prize. In 2004 he was awarded the Clarissa Luard Prize for the best British writer under the age of 35. His latest novel is PROFESSOR CHANDRA FOLLOWS HIS BLISS which is translated into six languages and was the Bookseller’s book of the month in June 2019.

Rajeev holds a PhD in English, and degrees from the universities of Oxford and Cambridge. He has lived in London, Manchester, a remote Suffolk beach, Berlin, Kathmandu, and Hong Kong, where he was a Research Scholar in the Society of Scholars at Hong Kong University. He was a fellow of the Hemera Foundation from 2014-16, for writers with a meditation practice, and has been writer in residence at Crestone Zen Mountain Center and the Zen Center of New York City.

But it is through his Instagram account (@Rajeevwriter) exploring the fusion of politics and spirituality that I discover Rajeev's work.

Rajeev's journey is a fascinating one. We meet in St James Park under my favourite trees - two strangers, recording a conversation about how to engage with the world from a place of love, compassion and non-avoidance.

Dr Rageshri Dhairwayan is an NHS Consultant in Sexual Health and HIV Medicine.

Her book 'Unheard: The Medical Practice of Silencing' takes us on a journey through history to show how not listening to patients has been ingrained in medicine from its inception.

Western medicine has been built on the assumption that power should always lie with the doctor, and that patients should be powerless to decisions made about their body if it is done to make them well. Chef Fadi Kattan on honouring and celebrating Palestinian Food, Culture and its People

Fadi Kattan is a Palestinian Chef from Bethlehem, owner of two restaurants: Akub in London and Fawda in Bethlehem.

He has also recently launched his first cookbook - Bethlehem: A Celebration of Palestinian Food.

I had the pleasure of sitting across the table from Fadi in his restaurant.
We talked about resilience, community, deep roots and the importance of preserving and celebrating the ancient culture of the Palestinian people.

We also finish the episode with him sampling a bowl of red bean soup made from my grandfather's slow cooker. An exchange of stories and cultures passed down through generations - in the form of a comforting bowl of soup.

Rafia Zakaria is a Pakistani-American attorney, feminist, journalist and author of an eye opening book I’d recently read - ‘Against White Feminism.’

She believes in an expanded feminist conversation that involves retrieving stories around the world - widening our vocabulary of feminist strength across different cultures.

She says: “We need to excavate and retrieve stories that will lead to an expanded self understanding necessary for a universal feminist consciousness.”

“We need a project of retrieval, because we have an incomplete picture of feminism right now.”

Despite its provocative title, this book is not a scolding but an invitation.
An invitation to examine our own complicity within oppressive, capitalist structures, and to embark on our journey of 'unlearning' in order to rebuild a new and better world.

Andrew Chin on his teenage years and standing in his values

Let's call this the end of year bonus special because in this episode, I talk to my first ever boyfriend from ‘high school’.

Dr Andrew Chin is a shark scientist, who runs a fisheries lab at James Cook University. He has worked at the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and his research has focused on coastal ecology and fisheries, particularly sharks and rays.

But we discuss NONE of this (which would have undoubtedly been fascinating) because we decide to get into the REAL stuff like teenage torment, his evolving relationship with religion, being jealous of Bono from U2 (!), his thoughts on modern masculinity and grappling with his mixed race heritage.

I almost chickened out from sharing this recording because it felt intensely personal. But our conversation also felt like unfolding an old letter tucked away in the corner of my attic and discovering that it still sparkled.

So in the end, it felt like a conversation worth sharing. An exercise in bravery, vulnerability and a big dose of crazy. Enjoy!

Kyle Tran Myhre (aka Guante) is a poet-activist-educator whose work explores the relationships between narrative, power, and resistance. He’s performed at the United Nations, been a member of two National Poetry Slam championship teams, and visited countless colleges, conferences, and festivals, using spoken word and storytelling as doorways into critical dialogue. His most recent book, Not a Lot of Reasons to Sing, But Enough, is available now via Button Poetry.
