Its safe to say that us humans have always been curious about what exists beyond what we can see with our own eyes. By 1400 BCE, discovered Hindu texts show that we were already beginning to map the space around us. Astrology can be broadly considered the search for human meaning in the sky. It makes sense then, that artists, including musicians and film makers, have always found huge inspiration in the space around us.  It also makes for some great metaphors.
