The day we got the news about a 99% chance our daughter would have Down syndrome is the day most people assume shattered us. It didn’t. The surprise is what came after, when the adrenaline faded and the real pressure started to work on our hearts: comparison with other families, the fear of an unknown future, and a quiet, internal frustration toward God that felt wrong but also felt real.

We tell the story of that phone call, the swirl of shock, grief, and unexpected calm, and then we get honest about what nearly cracked our faith. Culture has a dozen opinions about what a “real dad” looks like and most of them leave you either checked out, exhausted, or performing for approval. We slow the noise down and ask a simpler question: what does the Bible actually say fatherhood is for?

We start by naming three cultural dad tropes we all drift into: the absent checked out dad (physically present, emotionally gone), the provider-only dad (worth measured by income), and the buddy hustle dad (trying to be your kid’s best friend or turning parenting into a productivity project). Then we rebuild the vision of Christian fatherhood using three biblical models. Joseph shows quiet obedience and protection in Matthew 1 and 2, moving immediately when God speaks. David reminds us that fatherhood isn’t perfection, it’s repentance, and Psalm 51 gives language for owning failure without hiding. You can feel it when a story outgrows the box you first put it in. We started Journey to Holland to process our daughter Eleanor’s Down syndrome diagnosis and the hard reality of the NICU, surgeries, and complications we never saw coming. That story still matters, but our life has kept moving, and we want the podcast to move with it, without pretending the past didn’t happen or turning faith into bumper-sticker comfort.
