]]> A profound shift is underway as I'm planning to transition from audio podcasting to YouTube. Visual media, I believe, will allow me to share autistic experiences more fully, through body language, facial expression, and presence beyond words.

For a few years now, I’ve been “speaking beneath stars in the night sky,” offering quiet reflection through audio. Now, “the sky is brightening — a new day is dawning,” and I’m stepping into the light, where visibility and community will be able to grow and flourish.

Life on the spectrum often means performing unwritten social scripts that I have found in times go by, drain and overwhelm. But at parkruns, what I found is, they offer a structured routine where participation doesn’t require conversation, explanation, or masking. Just turn up, run or walk, get your barcode scanned at the end. It is simply to be there, and feel part of something on your own terms.

What began as exercise became a deeper journey. I’ve improved my time by five minutes over a year. For me, that's five minutes of self-trust, rhythm, and quiet defiance of the old belief that I wasn’t athletic. Even after an Achilles injury, I returned, got my form back, and became stronger and more grounded.

Parkrun has become a weekly routine for me. What I see here is, importantly for me is, a metaphor for autistic life where I can move at my own pace, be part of a community, and belong without any pressure.

However, for as long as I can remember, I've been drawn to those moments when tyres press into softer ground, sometimes leaving their marks behind. What others dismissed as an unusual obsession actually opened doorways to understanding soil mechanics, physics principles, and even linguistic connections. 

"Interests are like tyre marks on grass. Unexpected but full of meaning, while others stick to the tarmac. Some of us explore softer ground." 

For me, this metaphor captures something which I see interesting about my autistic experience. It's to do with finding meaning and beauty in unexpected places that others might otherwise overlook. Through personal stories about school memories, park run parking dilemmas, and scientific observations, I share how this fascination helped me understand not just the physical world, but more about my own neurodivergent mind.

My journey explores how seemingly quirky interests should be seen as pathways to deeper understanding and unique perspectives. When I notice the different sounds of driving on varied surfaces or observe how heavy vehicles leave different marks on clay versus sandy soil, I'm engaging with the world in a different way, a way that's unique to me. These explorations off the beaten path – metaphorically stepping off the tarmac, from what I now understand, can lead to one developing innovative thinking, problem-solving skills, and perhaps even contributions that benefit everyone. They were, in the words of my diagnostician in a letter to my primary school headteacher one time, "major preoccupations of a psychological nature which will not go away with bullying".

When differences are subtle enough to be noticed but difficult to define? In this personal episode, I aim to explore the concept of "quiet currents beneath the waves". For me, these were the subtle signs of autism that shaped my educational journey without dramatically setting me apart.

From early school observations of language repetition and fixations to my preference for solitude and concrete thinking, teachers recognised I processed the world differently but were unsure exactly how. My case was likened to "being in the Pacific Ocean, but within safe reach of the seashore" . They were different enough to notice, but not requiring dramatic intervention. These gentle currents nudged me in different directions, creating challenges with language processing, social interaction, and understanding others' perspectives, while simultaneously highlighting strengths in memory, music, and mathematical calculation.

The power of early diagnosis allowed appropriate support to be implemented, including observations by therapists to support me, to teachers who adapted their methods to my visual learning style. 

My mainstream education was successful in its own right, not only because of my underlying improvements, but because subtle accommodations made space for my differences. A former headteacher later admitted they’d learned plenty from my case.

This episode invites listeners to consider the quietly different people in their lives, and even how small adjustments can make profound differences in helping neurodivergent individuals thrive.

Another thing I refer to is trying to find a balance between the amount of time doing a special interest and other important things, such as social skills development.

Developing skills
Crossing my hands over when steering - learned early on not to do this (control of car)

I understood how to work the controls from observations of other drivers

I knew driving too fast is dangerous, and learned afterwards that too slow can causes dangers of its own

Challenges
Overcoming my fear of speed - I spent time in small, quiet car parks getting used to the family car, by driving around in relatively quiet areas such as small car parks before progressing to a larger car park to get accustomed to driving at speeds close to that on a typical public road.
 
Emerging from junctions and roundabouts - knowing when to give way (Judging gaps, larger gaps easier, longer and straighter roads)

Reading and understanding the language involved in the rules of the road and applying them to traffic situations.

Finding an instructor
Recommendation by a friend, who advised that a local instructor was probably ideal for me, since they wouldn't be quite so pushy, but still with enough enthusiasm about them to keep you motivated along the way. 

My instructor had a good pass rate and would remind me whenever I did something wrong or praise me when I did something right. Reassured me

Being obsessed with perfection - concentrated better after being told not to dwell on perfection

Certain things I could understand easily enough MSM when lane changing and checking blind spot before carrying out manoeuvre.

Being in a dual controlled car gave me a peace of mind too, knowing that my instructor could intervene if dangerous situations arose.

Stopping for small breaks

Instead of using phrases like “Burn rubber”, use a simpler phrase like get up to a certain speed quickly.

Written test
Had access to a book with questions likely to appear on the theory test. I just read the book from start to finish, practising the questions until I was satisfied I could remember them. 

To me a lot of questions were simply a matter of applying common sense.

If you're behind a lorry indicating to turn left, it seems more logical to hold back and give it more room because, for a start, a lorry is a bigger and longer vehicle, and will thus need more room in the road in order to complete the turn safely.

Practical driving skills
Manoeuvres (parallel parking and reversing round corners using certain points on back window as guides)

Multitasking - using car controls whilst looking out for other road users
Hill starts - using a bit more revs

My driving test
Taken down familiar roads

Having practice independent of lessons gave me confidence in tackling traffic situations

Benefits
Psychologically it gives me a newer kind of personal freedom
Less reliance on public transport

Success
Long motorway drives - overcome significant barriers

Overcoming fear of speed and limitation of concentration

Whenever I encounter difficulties elsewhere, I think about the fact I mastered learning to drive.

Some of the topics I mention are:


Job interviews 

Alterations to the interview process, including asking questions in simpler ways, along with being more direct and literal.

These can include loyalty, reliability, dedication, unique strengths and skills.  Some unique strengths and skills can include good eye for details, fast and accurate keyboard skills


Weaknesses can be turned into opportunities.

Despite my communication deficiencies, I showed I could do some telephone work, taking simple messages and dealing with simple enquiries.

I refer to subjects that I was better at, and other subjects that I’d find more difficult.

Things I talk about include:

Having a choice of more than one course for a particular subject. Difficulties with other subjects may be linked to one’s language deficiencies, which may create problems with understanding and interpreting written material, and expressing oneself. I interpreted language using different mechanisms to others. 

There are autistic people who have logical ways of thinking.

Why one with logical minds might be better at subjects that involve spotting patterns and understanding and applying rules. With modern languages, this can include spotting and understanding grammatical rules, and which formulae to apply to given problems in mathematics. 

Working out meanings of words. 

This can be done by reading it in a sentence in a particular book in the contexts in which they may be used. 

By encouraging one to do projects on whatever interests them. 

This included doing a space project in science. 

Having class activities associated with whatever one is interested in. 

For me, this was linked to a particular class novel that I quickly became interested in. 

And finally

Why not get in touch with me, and talk about what subjects you found easier, and ones you may have found more difficult. 

And I’d be particularly interested in subjects you once found difficult but now find easier, and any other underlying improvements you’ve noticed in yourself, a loved one, or, if you’re in a teaching capacity, any students.
