In this episode, I sit down with my frat brother, Saif Madar — a man I’ve known for over two decades. Same yard. Different eras. Real brotherhood.

Saif was born in Guyana and raised in the Bronx. Engineer by training. MBA in finance. A numbers guy. Analytical. Measured. Strategic.

And if you ask him, he’ll tell you he’s not the type to sit around opening up or getting lost in deep reflection.

But here’s the thing — many of us raised in households where strength was non-negotiable weren’t taught to process out loud. We were taught to handle it. To perform. To push through. To keep emotion tight and responsibility high.

In many of our communities, vulnerability wasn’t modeled, so it wasn’t the first language we learned. Carrying it without complaint was the expectation. Reflection wasn’t always encouraged. Providing was. Producing was. Protecting was.

So slowing down to reflect? To unpack? To say what’s really going on inside?

That’s something most of us learn later — if we learn it at all.

What makes this conversation different is the space. The trust. The shared fraternal bond that allows two men — raised in different homes but shaped by parallel expectations, similar pressures expressed through slightly different cultural tones — to slow down and speak more openly than we were taught to growing up.

And he did.

This episode moves through identity, responsibility, growth, brotherhood, leadership, and fatherhood — with humor, honesty, and moments that even caught him off guard.

Today is December 4th — the day my father was born, my fraternity’s Founders Day, and the day this podcast turns three years old. In this special reflection I speak  about the weight men carry, the healing I’m walking through as a father, and the stretching that marriage continues to bring. I open up about a moment that shaped me, the lessons I’m still learning, and the lifelong work of becoming the man God is calling me to be.

This podcast has always been about honoring my father and building legacy — but it’s also a space for us to grow out loud, especially for men of color who didn’t grow up with the language, the room, or the safety to feel, talk, or process. So part of my work here is opening the door for all men — but especially my brothers — to listen, lean in, and know you’re not walking this journey alone.

Am I the only one? Have you ever said “yes” when you really meant “maybe” — or agreed to something you knew wasn’t yours to carry?

Yeah, saying yes out of habit, out of guilt, or just wanting to be the one people can count on — until those yeses started costing me peace, purpose, and alignment. I found myself overextended, overcommitted, and wondering how I got there.

I talk about a pattern that kept showing up in my life and the moment I had to stop pretending it was harmless. Saying yes to things God never co-signed or called me to do wasn’t service — it was self-made stress. In fact, it was also a quiet form of dishonesty.

Collect yourself and go home.” Choosing to listen to God’s voice in that pivotal moment changed everything, setting him on a path of healing, redemption, and hope. 

As a single father, DaRon raised his nonverbal son with autism, becoming his son’s biggest advocate and celebrating milestones like learning to type to communicate. Now remarried and blessed with a blended family of five children, DaRon shares how faith, family, and friendship have anchored him through life’s storms. For far too long, Black men have been expected to shoulder immense pressures from both society and our communities, often in silence. When it comes to mental health, this silence has devastating consequences. Suicide ranks as the third leading cause of death among Black men aged 15-24, and rates are climbing among middle-aged men—a sobering reminder of the challenges faced during this critical life stage.

This rise is fueled by societal and cultural pressures, untreated mental health challenges, and stigma around seeking help. For many, these struggles go unspoken, leading to a dangerous intersection of stress, grief, and isolation. The holiday season, while joyful for some, often magnifies these feelings, pushing those already vulnerable closer to the edge.

In this episode, I’m honored to welcome back my fraternity brother, Khalid Scott. Khalid brings over 27 years of experience in social work and mental health services, specializing in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, trauma-informed care, and substance abuse counseling. He is a passionate advocate for mental health awareness in the Black community and the perfect voice for this critical conversation.

Together, we unpack the unique pressures Black men face, particularly during the holiday season, and discuss the importance of seeking help, encouraging one another, and utilizing the resources available. Two years. Two years of resilience, purpose, and building something greater than ourselves. In this milestone episode of Leave the Pile Higher, Grow Your Legacy, we celebrate the journey—through the highs, the lows, and the six-month silence that nearly derailed it all.

This celebration is deeply personal. Today would have been my dad’s 77th birthday, and every step of this podcast has been done in honor of him. My father, Ralph William Savage III, embodied joy, resilience, and love. Losing him left a hole in my heart, but every episode I publish is my way of keeping his legacy alive. It’s a journey that brings me to tears with each milestone we reach.

Legacy isn’t built in a straight line. It’s forged in the messy, imperfect moments when we choose not to quit. In this episode, I reflect on what it took to reach this milestone and draw inspiration from the lives of Reginald F. What does it mean to build a legacy while still overcoming life’s biggest challenges? In this episode, we dive deep with Robbie Cunningham—stage name Robbie Mychals—a Billboard-charting singer, musician, producer, and licensed minister who knows firsthand how to turn pain into purpose.

Robbie’s musical journey began in the church choir at an early age, where his grandmothers saw something special in him. Both, at different times, told Robbie he would one day be a pastor. His response?  A light-hearted, "Nooo," as becoming a minister was the last thing he ever saw himself doing.  

When asked how long he ran from the call of becoming a minister, Robbie laughed and said, "A long time," which led to some shared laughter during the interview. Though his grandmothers’ words stayed with him, it was ultimately God’s touch on his life that led Robbie to embrace his calling, becoming a licensed minister and blending his faith with his passion for music. 

He also opens up about his battle with prostate cancer, the lessons he’s learned from his grandfather and father; and the responsibility of being a ‘girl dad’ while striving to leave a lasting financial legacy for future generations. Robbie’s resilience and dedication have shaped both his career and personal journey, making his story a powerful testament to overcoming adversity.
